Sat. May 25, 2019 – “nuttin’ to do Abe…”

By on May 25th, 2019 in Random Stuff

75F and saturated this am… yesterday was hot and so humid you could cut the air with a knife. All the weather I looked at shows clear for today with no precipitation.

The title comes from a video game, and is my silly reference to our family calendar which is completely blank today. I don’t recall a similar blank day in months. Of course, I have plenty to do that isn’t on the calendar.

If you don’t normally fly an American flag, take a few minutes to get one out (or purchase one) and show your support for the dead this weekend. The people who sent them into harms way may have been corrupt time serving freaks, or might have saved life as we know it, but the men and women who made the sacrifice deserve to be honored in their own right. You’ve got a couple of days, find the time. Ritual is important. Public displays of our values are important. For the survivors, seeing the support is important. For our enemies, seeing the support is important.

Take some time this long weekend to fix something. Fight back against the entropy of the universe by putting a little energy into some local re-ordering. Fix a relationship- make the phone call. Clean, organize, repair, paint, BUILD. Plant a seed, even just metaphorically.

Do not go gently into that dark night….

I note that the guy ain’t exactly an Oxford Don….

“‘I Lied. I Made The Whole Thing Up. Now I’m In Huge Trouble,’ was the title of Morris’ post Thursday.

Morris wrote that he ‘made the whole thing up’ and ‘Most importantly, I definitely didn’t rob an MS-13 gang member. In retrospect, that’s probably the dumbest thing you can write and put on the internet.'”

“Morris also wrote that that the fun and games of going viral — predictably leading to Hollywood agents and filmmakers knocking on his door to get a piece of the hot action — went pear-shaped earlier that day when his ‘weed man’ stopped by his home and informed him that he’d made a big mistake.

‘”Did you actually just casually throw out how you robbed MS-13?”‘ the dealer supposedly said to Morris. ‘‘I used to bang. I know these n****as. These n****as ain’t just gonna murder you. They’re gonna make that shit last for six fucking hours.’

    “Web Developer”

Our household doesn’t view weed as a harmless drug. If nothing else, it makes people stupid over time.

carrying a gps is a non sense (no pun intended)with offline maps like here, its cell OR gps, ah, and a flashlight!

I do not rent a gps anymore, less buy it

Take a paper map backup. I’ve written before about weird places in WA and TX where I’ve seen the GPS signal disappear in open territory.

  9. Nick Flandrey says:

The SPOT is a two way satellite communication device, like a pager on steroids. Lots of back country travelers carry one for when nothing else works. As long as you can see the sky, it should work, absent jamming-which is illegal.

added- or the “in reach mini” like cowboy carries… SPOT is probably cheaper.

Both places I’ve seen possible GPS jamming are government related.

I kinda-sorta understand the area around JB Lewis-McCord, but the LBJ Ranch?

  11. CowboySlim says:

SPOT is cheaper, but with inReach I can SMS back into cell range and then receive replies back via Iridium satellites. SPOT has SOS only, not SMS, while inReach has both.

Cheaper in the context of both off the shelf and monthly subscription.

Yup. And then a thriving business will be bribing public servants to keep oneself out of the algorithms. And to track someone through the algorithms.

“Rural America Is On The Verge Of Collapse ”
    https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-05-20/rural-america-verge-collapse

“The Economic Innovation Group’s (EIG) Distressed Communities Index (DCI) shows a significant economic transformation (from two distinct periods: 2007-2011 and 2012-2016) that occurred since the financial crisis. The shift of human capital, job creation, and business formation to metropolitan areas reveals that rural America is teetering on the edge of collapse.”

“Since the crisis, the number of people living in prosperous zip codes expanded by 10.2 million, to a total of 86.5 million, an increase that was much greater than any other social class. Meanwhile, the number of Americans living in distressed zip codes decreased to 3.4 million, to a total of 50 million, the smallest shift of any other social class. This indicates that the geography of economic pain is in rural America.”

“Farmers are facing tremendous headwinds, including a worsening trade war, collapsing soybean exports to China, global oversupply conditions, and crop yield losses in the Midwest due to flooding. This all comes at a time when farmers are defaulting and missing payments at alarming rates, forcing regional banks to restructure and refinance existing loans.”

Is it as bad as he says ? The one thing that one should never do is screw with the farmers.

I fixed something today. My Ruger SP101 357 was occasionally binding up. Like every 10 or 15 trigger pulls. Figuring the first thing to do would be a thorough cleaning. I disassembled per the manual and I noticed that a small spring with a rounded head that pushed on the pawl was not seated straight. I reseated it properly, finished my cleaning and reassembled. I’ve dry fired the gun 100 times now without a problem. Tomorrow real test at the range.

Note: there are really sharp edges in the trigger housing. I found out that neither Hoppes#9 nor CLP remove blood from stainless steel. I had to lick my finger and rub it off. Must be a water solubility issue.

I note that ‘1999 KW4’ asteroid (with it’s own ‘moon’) is zipping by the Earth this weekend. Passes within 3 million miles, the experts say.

I’ve got my hard-hat on, just in case.

  21. Nick Flandrey says:

Well, I replaced the failed camera on my front porch. The ethernet plug had obvious scorch marks between two wires. Don’t know if it was moisture, bugs, or just bad luck, but it smoked the cam. Fortunately I have dozens more.

Since I have dozens more I added one to the back yard to cover most of what I can’t see from the other cams. And since I needed to add one, I needed to figure out how to use H.264 with the new cam and the cam on the front porch. The iSpy database didn’t have a URL for that stream so I ended up reading manf’s lit. and figuring it out. I get better frame rates with lower load now. (and I’ve enabled using the GPU for video decoding)

I also installed my smaller IR floodlight to cover the driveway and re-aimed that camera. To power it I used a handy little box that turns the 24VAC that was feeding the camera (old school) into 12VDC for camera accessories. Works a treat so far.

I still need to install another large IR flood for the back yard and figure out how to power it. I may just steal the 24VAC from the camera that is about 25ft away. Easier than working in the attic.

    More to do still…..

The big one is 0.8 miles (1.3 km) wide ! You are going to need more than a hard hat for that.

If road automation doesn’t happen by then, they will know where your car is at all times via congestion pricing toll equipment on city streets.

Our gear can do it now. No digging up streets either.

Discovery has been so uneven I’m not sure what to think.

  27. Nick Flandrey says:

Pulled the back porch light down. It’s an LED and was flashing. That generally means a failed component in the power supply. The supply was fully potted so I couldn’t fix it. I’m off to the store to try to find another psu, or a replacement fixture.

I’ve got some other things to pick up too. One project was replacing two toilet seats. One went fine, but the other was missing a crucial piece. WTF would you design your seat so the bolt needed a special insert to work? One that went missing?

    [interlude]

    I guess I never hit Post….

Back from home depot and I think I have the stuff I need for my plumbing adventure.

“Department Of Transportation Launches Investigation Into Chick-Fil-A Bans”
    https://dailycaller.com/2019/05/24/dot-investigate-chick-fil-a-ban/

“The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced on Friday that it will investigate whether two airports violated federal law or transportation regulations by denying a contract to Chick-fil-A on religious grounds.”

““The Department has received complaints alleging discrimination by two airport operators against a private company due to the expression of the owner’s religious beliefs,” DOT said in a statement. “FAA’s Office of Civil Rights has notified the San Antonio International Airport (SAT) and Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) that it has opened investigations into these complaints.””

“The San Antonio city council passed a motion on March 21 to approve the Food, Beverage and Retail Prime Concession Agreement with Paradies Lagardère for the San Antonio International Airport with the condition that Chick-fil-A be excluded from the agreement. Councilman Roberto Treviño, who initially made the motion against Chick-fil-A, claimed the fast food restaurant expressed “anti-LGBTQ behavior” and that the ban reaffirmed that San Antonio is a champion of “equality and inclusion.””

“The prohibition came after a report noted that in 2017, Chick-fil-A donated nearly $2 million to the Salvation Army, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Paul Anderson Youth Home. The report asserted that the three charities were discriminatory against LGBTQ individuals.”

I doubt that anything will happen but it is nice to see the acknowledgement that discrimination is going on here in the USA by governmental authorities.

  29. Nick Flandrey says:

It would be nice to see Chik fil a get a fat settlement and then donate all of it to those same charities….

IIRC, Morehouse College is among the biggest beneficiaries of Chick Fil A’s generosity. Try to find an African American and/or religious charity in Atlanta who hasn’t cashed a check from the company or the Cathy (founder) family.

A shakedown of Chick Fil A on the basis of racial discrimination never would have flown so the Progs are trialing a new tactic to squeeze money from the company.

The LGBTQ community seems well represented in the management and crew of our local Chick Fil A. Typical Austin beyond the strict grooming standards.

  32. Greg Norton says:

Election silly season. No one asked if Chick Fil A even wanted to bid for a spot at the airport before the city council voted on a ban.

The people of San Antonio deserve their fate if they re-elect Nirenberg as Mayor in the runoff election in two weeks. The only upside to Nirenberg’s re-election is that it will be another nail in the coffin of the Castro political dynasty. The Mayor will be the new Prog player in that part of Texas, especially since the Governor and the Legislature punted on restricting the city’s mandatory sick leave initiative in order to go chase Ann Richards’ ghost.

    Don’t cross the streams.

I really liked the last season of Discovery. I’m not excited about “Picard” which means it will probably bomb. Hollyweird needs to stop digging up the old actors. Go with a “Pike” series.

  34. ech says:

The Chick-fil-A people built a movie studio in Atlanta, which they rent out to productions. Alas, with the new Georgia abortion law, they may lose a lot of business.
