Wed. Jul. 27, 2022 – no love for the classics?

By on July 27th, 2022 in decline and fall, lakehouse, personal

Humid, and hot.   Still and again.   Yesterday did get into the 100s, at least in the sun.   And we had sun here, all day, in between some threatening clouds, but we never did get rain.

I did my chauffeur duties.  And did some auction stuff.   Did some cleaning in my office too.   So much more to do…

Didn’t win the solar panels.   There will be others at some point, and these went for about double what I wanted to pay without seeing them in person.  There weren’t a lot of bidders, but it only takes two who want the lot to run up the price.

I spent some time on the phone and emailing to see if there was a way to move my septic install along, and I got lucky.   I might have found a company to do the foundation and retaining walls, and their technology doesn’t require a bunch of heavy machinery or digging.   That helps me sequence the work and maybe get the septic in first.  I’ll also probably be responsible for more of the site prep and demo but that is the breaks.  I wasn’t finding anyone else to do it anyway.

Speaking of infrastructure.  I do need to get at least a UPS up there for the freezers, and it would be nice to move a battery and the charge controller for the portable solar panels too.  I’ve got to get some networking and a cam or two running too, even without an internet connection.   I’ll only work on that if I hit roadblocks with the more important work though.

For today though, I’ve got kid duties, some auction pickups, and more work to do on my site plan and model of the house and lot.  I might have cleaned all of my office that will be cleaned this time… there just isn’t enough time.

So stack up some labor saving devices, and some skillz to use them.   And make the most of your time.

Ah, nothing like an international business.  The wife and I are helping a refinery customer in Yemen here at midnight.  Not sure what time it is there.

An offset of whole hours plus a half hour just to make life interesting?

Venezuela had a half hour in the offset for a while for political reasons. “Chavez Time”. They reverted to UTC-4 much for the same reasons that beach bars in Florida want permanent DST in the state.

And people wonder why I play with Tcl if I’m doing time/date things. Or Unicode.

California. Turkey hunting was a thing when I was growing up.
Now these pansies call the cops, who then ‘nope’ out of addressing the mean bird instead of turning it into meat.

We have a deer problem around our development because hunting is banned in the nature preserve areas, and all of their habitat on the old ranch to the west was turned into dense H1B tract houses.

In Austin, every deer is Bambi.

The critter my kids really have a hard time understanding being nasty to live around are peacocks. The area where I grew up in Florida has a bad problem with those birds due to a hurricane smashing a breeding farm in the 50s — of course the birds survived.

Until one is vocalizing during mating season in the neighborhood, most people don’t realize that they have a call like a woman screaming.

0730 and it’s 79F with 87% humidity. Feels like 85F. I’ve been taking the puppy for walks in the morning since it’s so bleeping hot in the evening. She is doing better. She now will walk out the front door and to the neighbor’s yard. She is scared of something around there, as I really have to coax her to keep going. I have to drop the leash, walk down the sidewalk a ways, sit down, and then she will make her way to me (treats don’t work). I have to do that about three times, then she will walk the short loop without issue (.78 miles). She isn’t enjoying it though, as her ears are pinned back. She is getting more comfortable with it though, so we’ll keep doing it.

Volvo? EV is the new virtue signaling.

The neighbors down the street have a EV Mustang abomination with a meaningless “GT” logo.

As for yard signs, I haven’t seen any “B*TO!” signs this year where about half of the houses around me had them four years ago.

Florida can’t be the only Gulf Coast state where someone tried a peacock farm in the early 20th century only to have the animals escape after the venture collapsed.

@GregN: I run current Fedora on an otherwise useless Inspiron 14 with 4 GB RAM as my “road” computer. The distro is worth considering for a low resource machine.

Do you think it would run DosBox and some old abandonware Dos game? I like the idea of a second macine for that. Lots of old Dells and such with 4Gb/320 on Craigslist. I used to use Puppy as a rescue OS myself as a low resource option, but I seem to recall it had limitations.

Possibly, but I’m not gaming or doing much with the laptop other than email and light web surfing on the road.

I don’t take anything with serious capability lest I be tempted to do work-related things while on vacation time.

I was running my home server on Fedora with 4 GB, but that got too painful when using Java and GUI occasionally. I upgraded to 8 GB which was cheap and simple.

The hardware is an AMD APU with a B350 chipset so the board can go to 64 GB, but I will pay a penalty with memory clock if I max out the RAM so I keep the server resources as low as possible until I can’t stand it anymore.

One of the points of the server build five years ago (!) was to see how cheap I could go. Under $200 for motherboard, CPU, and RAM, and the processor core is the same one AMD supplies for the PS4.

You could probably do something similar with a low end Intel CPU right now.

When then-wife and moved to a farm, I was gifted some peacocks.

It turns out if you don’t acclimate them, they like to roam, and often never return.  Sightings happened all over the place, and since this was before Facebook, they even ended up in the local newspaper.  We figured out to keep a low profile and not claim ownership.

I had a neighbor call once that there was a peacock in his garden.  By this point, I was well aware of their drawbacks, and I made 2 comments.  1) You have a shotgun, feel free to use it and 2) I’ve done some research and apparently they taste like pheasant.

Peacocks? A neighbor here in far west San Antonio has peacocks. To me, their cries sound like cats in distress, and since we like cats, I kept trying to figure out where. Another neighbor (our houses are far enough apart that we have very few neighbors) told me that was a peacock, so I stopped worrying about that.

Until the sound started coming from underneath our back porch, and I had to rescue a few-weeks-old abandoned kitten….

Declaring the climate crisis a national emergency under the NEA would unlock powers to rebuild a better economy with significant, concrete actions. . . . Under the NEA, you could redirect spending to build out renewable energy systems on military bases, implement large-scale clean transportation solutions and finance distributed energy projects to boost climate resiliency. All of these actions would employ Americans in new and emerging industries while securing American leadership in global markets.

Get ready for the 100 years war here in the USA.

BTW, you will be fascinated to find out how much water that you put into your septic system, along with other stuff.  My first septic tank at the house, the trash tank, is 500 gallons.  My second septic tank, the separation tank, is 500 gallons.  My third septic tank, the finishing tank, is 750 gallons.  I think that the water sprinklers are activated when the third tank has 400 to 500 gallons of water in it.

Note, this is NOT potable (drinking) water.  It is gray water with chlorine in it that may be suitable for watering your yard.  The emphasis is on may because when that system has an uh-oh, the sprinkler water coming out is not clean.

Is an UPS (or generator) needed for the freezers at the BOL?

Assuming that power outages are short there, a full freezer should be able to hold the freezing temp for up to 48 hours if the freezer door stays closed.

Are outages there longer than that? If so, perhaps a whole house generator (or even a smaller one for just vital devices like a freezer)  that automatically switches on/off during power outage events is a choice. With a bypass panel properly installed to prevent feedback into the grid.

One of the nice features for the UPSes is that they beep at you when things are bad.  I have a fridge in the garage.  The GFCI circuit keeps on tripping and I do not find it out until the water bottles are warm.  A UPS would be nice for that.

We, the USA, would never emerge from the climate emergency as a republic.  We would emerge as a dictatorship.  And at some point in the climate emergency, they would go door to door seizing our guns forcefully.  After that, many of us conservatives would be removed from our homes and sent to re-education camps.

I’m having fun with my ISP.  Sort of.  They say I should get 30 down and 10 up.  I don’t.

When I signed up the plan was 25/5.  It usually ran a few Mpbs faster.  28/6 or so.  I suppose that’s close enough to 30/10.

Using their “officially preferred” speed test site, I’m hanging about 26 down on a good day, with 16 to 20 most of the time and almost 1 up any day.   Nascar on the Sling doesn’t stutter or go to static at all.  Shoot, full HD too.  (not 4k, the Roku can but my TV is too old)

So my problem is… when they came and installed their radio, that’s all they did.  They dropped the 40 foot telescoping mast, removed Rise’s radio and attached the new radio.  No new wiring, no new surge suppressor, no new power supply.  And guess who spent the rest of the day adjusting the guy wires?  And paid $250 for installation?

Well, I’ve had a lot of “something is wrong with your network and it’s not our problem” noise.  I understand their view.  I could have a funky switch or cable somewhere.  And sure, I might have my MCSE for NT but networking basics haven’t changed.  But hang on a minute.  Let me hook up a laptop with a clean install of Win7 and connect directly to the POE.  Same speeds.  Even tried a different cable in case the one I was using to connect to the router was flaky.

So I’m not the problem.  They were going to come here on Monday and fix all the things.  As soon as his nanny got there.  That was back in early March.  Never heard even a whisper.

The trouble ticket was closed.  I reopened it last month and asked “how was this ticket solved?”.   It was closed again couple of weeks later.  I reopened it again and asked “No really, how was this ticket solved?  The last I heard from you was ”we’ll be heading there when my nanny gets here””.  Jiggle the knife, eh?

Today is “I have set you a firm appointment for monday morning to come out and completely re-do your entire circuit to make sure your up to full package.”

I’ll believe it when it happens.  A new radio might be a good thing, it’s been up there roasting in the heat for since March 2019.

I think it’s a bad wire from the radio to the POE.  They say they can talk to the radio at 350 Mbps or so.  That’s nice.  How about cranking it up full blast for a day?  To see if that has an effect on my side?  Maybe the radio went bad on the output side.  I don’t think it’s the POE as I have other Ubiquiti stuff and I’ve swapped power supplies around.

For grins, after some tree trimming, my NanoBeam bridge is running from 480 to 600+ Mbps and the constellation is 16×16.  150 and 8×8 was plenty for my LAN.  Solid.   I should think about replacing a couple of routers.  I have 10/100 switches.  Someday.

Well.  They had a “deal” last year and it boiled down to pay in advance for a year and get four months free.  I’m  paid through April.  After that?  If they do another No Show?  I will look for other options.

@lynn, a 7 cuft chest freezer draws 120w when it is running.   The sheet says it uses 250 KWh/year so less than one a day.   A 1500 UPS should give it enough to do a whole cooling cycle if the timing was exactly wrong and the compressor started when the outage did.  I haven’t put my wattmeter on it but the UPS is just backup.  If you don’t open it, it should ride thru a 6-8hr outage no problem.

@rick, a whole house gennie is on the list.  It could be small and only for a  few dedicated circuits up there.

Eventually, I want the freezers on solar, with battery and inverter, switching back to shore power if needed.  For better survivability, each should be on its own system, whatever that is.  Losing one small freezer still leaves one running, so under most ‘freezer failed’ situations I only lose half, not a whole big freezer’s worth.  And the small freezers were available and cheap, which trumped all the other considerations.  🙂

added- and the FCC normally doesn’t approve a new user in spectrum that they have already assigned to a CURRENT user. Some future thing doesn’t usually push out an existing thing, especially one that is working and successful. And never one that .mil is using.

Also, the .mil wants Starlink to be a GPS server.   Something about the Chinese being able to shoot down the sixteen ??? existing USA GPS satellites.

So if I bought a Mega Millions ticket on Monday but didn’t get the right numbers yesterday, do I have to buy another one before the next drawing?

I stopped by Amazon Fresh again today. They had T-Bones and New Yorks. New Yorks were $9.99/lb and T-Bones were $11.99/lb. Still beautifully marbled.

@Nick, which poems did you reference? _Ozymandias_ for sure, and _To the Virgins to make much of time_?

I bought a Midea 7CF chest freezer today.

I was in CostCo today, looking at steaks and trying to decide if there was room in the refrigerator freezer, or not, and decided it was time for a bit more storage.

I really wanted the 5CF for a particular corner in the kitchen, but 7CF is what was there, and will fit in the house, somewhere.

Water temps are 85 degrees across the Gulf, 87 off Florida where Katrina tracked.

The FL Gulf beaches must be like bathwater.

  66. Nick Flandrey says:

We got a few minutes of rain here too.   Just enough to wet the concrete and cool things off a bit.

As I drove around today there were cells visible in the different parts of town, and a couple of my stops told me they got about 15 minutes of rain when it blew through.

We could use a bit more…

I bought a dorm size Midea fridge not too long ago. The plastic lining becomes brittle at low temperatures, so be careful not to drop anything on it, or it will crack. Chinesium, dontcha know.

  68. Ray Thompson says:

Yes. Tickets are only good for the one drawing. I bought tickets for one drawing, 10 sets of numbers. Not a single one of my numbers was drawn.

re: sharing lottery ticket purchase and winnings…..I can see all sorts of potential problems if a shared ticket wins.

So, creating rules and contract for participants in your ‘lottery pool’ is important. Note that IANAL, but there’s some practical advice here and other places.

Some would think that buying lots of tickets via your lottery pool will increase your odds of winning. Not true. Or at best, a very insignificant increase in your odds of winning.

If I was asked to participate in (or run) a lottery pool, even if it was a friend or co-worker saying “can you buy me a lottery ticket since you are going to the store  – here’s the cash”, I’d refuse. Too much potential hassle if one of those tickets win. Or if you buy extra tickets for yourself and one of your non-pool tickets wins…there’s a potential for lawsuits from the members of your lottery pool.

Don’t need that hassle. Not for a million (or billion) dollars.

New Surface Stations Report Released – It’s ‘worse than we thought’

    Anthony Watts

MEDIA ADVISORY: 96% OF U.S. CLIMATE DATA IS CORRUPTED

Official NOAA temperature stations produce corrupted data due to purposeful placement in man-made hot spots

Nationwide study follows up widespread corruption and heat biases found at NOAA stations in 2009, and the heat-bias distortion problem is even worse now

“With a 96 percent warm-bias in U.S. temperature measurements, it is impossible to use any statistical methods to derive an accurate climate trend for the U.S.” said Heartland Institute Senior Fellow Anthony Watts, the director of the study. “Data from the stations that have not been corrupted by faulty placement show a rate of warming in the United States reduced by almost half compared to all stations.”

NOAA’s “Requirements and Standards for [National Weather Service] Climate Observations” instructs that temperature data instruments must be “over level terrain (earth or sod) typical of the area around the station and at least 100 feet from any extensive concrete or paved surface.” And that “all attempts will be made to avoid areas where rough terrain or air drainage are proven to result in non-representative temperature data.” This new report shows that instruction is regularly violated.

    https://wattsupwiththat.com/2022/07/27/new-surface-stations-report-released-its-worse-than-we-thought/

The corrupt U.S. government is using upward-biased temperature data gathered in violation of published standards to claim that there is a climate crisis and assume extraordinary powers that will be used to oppress the citizens.

    ADDED
And there is no part of the government more corrupt than elected officials and appointees running around the world on the taxpayer dime:

“But there is a third explanation for why he has shifted his position again, and nowadays feels “laid back about climate change”. All things being equal – “and it’s only got to take one sizable volcano to erupt and all the models, everything else, is right off the board””

“Lovelock maintains that, unlike most environmentalists, he is a rigorous empiricist, but it is manifestly clear that he enjoys maddening the green movement. “Well, it’s a religion, really, you see. It’s totally unscientific.””

Biden is still shilling the concept that the vaccines work as … well … vaccines. Trump didn’t have a jab and got much sicker as a result according to current conventional wisdom.

I doubt any of these politicians have an actual jab in their systems.

What Trump’s doctor did was a minor miracle.
