Tues. May 5, 2026 – no sink of mayo for me. Miracle Whip!

Cool and overcast, warming later. Lots of humidity. Although the national forecast still has us outside the storms zone, we seem to be set for a little weather. That’s ok, it’s been a great run of gorgeous days. Thank you global cooling.

Spent the day doing stuff. Mostly auction stuff but some household stuff to, like shopping. The costco changed their checkout lanes and moved the self checkout. I tried it as I only had 7 items. Yeah, I still prefer people. Plus, there was no signage or guidance so it was a bit of a clusterflock. I much prefer the “leave it all in the cart and we’ll scan it” method. I’ve been loading the cart with UPC codes clearly visible, and it makes the whole process very quick. There is a big savings in not handling everything out of and back into the cart. I miss the boxes to carry the stuff into the house, but I like the speed of checkout.

Today I’ll be working the list. There is plenty to do, I can choose what strikes my fancy or what has risen to the top of the ‘do it now’ list. Or I can go do something else. I do have one pickup, the medical lappy carts with the batteries in them. That is relatively nearby so not a burden. Whatever I choose, I’m sure my day will be full.

Stacking to do! Get busy!

BTW, if you don’t do it already, it’s worth figuring your “miles per dollar” as well as your ‘miles per gallon’.   Energy costs what it costs, in whatever form it’s delivered in.     It can be eye opening to compare cheap E85 to the
“expensive” E10 or E15 at the normal pump.    Every time I’ve done so, it was a wash because of the differing energy contents.  And E85 has significant potential downsides as well as distorting the farm markets.

E15 will destroy most of the vehicles more than 25 years old. That is part of the plan, of course.

Costco for gas on the way home, $3.60/gal

I’m envious. I paid over $5/gallon at Costco this weekend. Granted it was for the prissy car that prefers premium but even regular was nigh on $5/gallon.

    Mini is a BMW brand.

    Are those Hecho En Deutschland?

What letter does the VIN start with?

The 2016 Jetta we own prefers premium but will give me acceptable performance and MPG with regular.

    Designed and Hecho en Mexico.

BTW, I’m seeing a lot more new Toyotas with Mexican plates which the company doesn’t sell here because of “safety” issues but could do so easily if the price was right and dealers were willing to accept a little less in the F&I room.

I have a picture of a new Toyota “Avanza” taken in San Marcos recently, which I swore at first was a well-maintained first gen Highlander.

How many of those could Toyota sell even priced in the low 20s?

Americans would have to give up their gadget obsession which currently plagues new cars, but plenty of DIN modules used to be on the market to provide that dopamine hit in older cars.

on a separate and unrelated topic, when will the royal family have enough of megan sparkle and have that problem resolved?    can’t wait too long if they want a second marriage and more kids from sap known formerly as prince.

The 100 year plan continues on schedule. No changes or recasting of players are necessary at this time.

Seems like a good summary to me.   Both of my kids think certain people have “too much money” and above a certain point it should be taken from them.   I was pretty shocked by that, seeing how powerful the schools bias is.

Of course they both think Elon Musk is “dumb” and “definitely NOT” one of the most successful people on the planet, but couldn’t name anyone else – the truest sign of ‘received wisdom’ and not a position arrived at thru thought.

Elon is a grifter extraordinare but he isn’t dumb.

The teacher living next door has a Talarico sign in the yard. Those things have sprouted like proverbial mushrooms after the rain since the primary election.

The next Junior Senator from Texas and probably more in two years.

Talarico spouts nonsense about people having “enough” money. Colin Zachary did too, with a similar background, but the former seminary student has a skin color more palatable to the Wine/Weed Moms around here.

A plan is in motion and the schools are part of it.

I also noticed that next door has a visitor from WA State based on the tags on the vehicle.

    Figures.

OTOH, it could be another grandma car to replace a failed vehicle or give their kid a “college” car.

It was your conscience. You haven’t given all of your unearned wealth to the more deserving as reparations for your privilege.

(I can throw some more shibboleths in there if you need them. Maybe something about collective guilt. Crystals and mindfulness, too.)

  8. Greg Norton says:

You should immediately take your most valuable worldly possessions down to the local mosque – we certainly don’t lack for those here in Texas – and offer everything as tribute to our new Colonial masters for redistribution as they see fit.

Now let’s talk about unearned eggs…

  12. Ray Thompson says:

I just filled up at Costco, about 25 gallons set me back almost $95.00. I have not filled up since Memphis on the trip back home 9 days ago. I think the cost was somewhere around $3.80 a gallon where most other stations in the area are at $4.24.

I miss the boxes to carry the stuff into the house

My Costco has the boxes under the regular registers. But I go in the morning before the Riff Raff arrives as I have an executive membership. Necessary as when normal hours arrive finding parking is difficult and I would rather pay the extra fee to be able to avoid the “parking lot hunt”.

  13. SteveF says:

Oh, I earned those eggs in my fridge. Those clucking PITAs are more trouble than they’re worth, as livestock.

… Which really isn’t true. If I treated them as livestock, they’d be half the work. I treat them as pets. As such, they’re no more trouble than the typical dog.

Financially, I’m not sure that the eggs are worth the feed and miscellaneous cash expenses. Hard to say. They’re probably barely worth it, compared to store-bought regular eggs. Definitely worth it if I were buying organic, free-range eggs, but I wouldn’t be buying organic, free-range eggs because I don’t care.

I have a Toro walk behind, or is that a push?, string trimmer.  It has some California CARB carb.  No choke, no primer bulb.  No controls other than an on/off switch.

Briggs and Stratton  engine.  GTS  Guaranteed To Start.  And it did in fact start on the second pull when I bought it new in the box.

I used it several times.  Enough to figure how to re-string it.  Then I got stupid.  I parked it in the shed and let it sit all winter.  Did I tip it over and dump the gasoline and then run it dry?  Oh, heck no.

Moron.  I know better.  It will run for a few seconds with a spray of Starting Fluid ether into the air cleaner.  So I have fire.

Well.  I just looked at the carb.  Beats me.  But I can buy a replacement on Big River priced from $16 and up.   For a few bucks more I can get the kit of carb, air filter, spark plug, some fuel line and clamps and fuel filter and the all important shut-off valve.

I have filters and shutoff valves in the shed.  But hey, add on an air filter and fuel line and it looks like a deal to me.  Now to decide which deal.

And then I can figure where the current carb is clogged.

My push mower has a B&S engine.  I know how to clean the jet on it.  Get the Craftsman ignition wrenches, the size just smaller than ½ inch,  remove the bolt holding the fuel bowl onto the carb and use the wire from a brad twister to clean the jet.  Blow it out, that’s why you have lungs.  The bolt is the jet.  It’s simple once you figure it out.   Only took me three times to decide to add a shut off and filter to the fuel line.  Problem solved.  Turn on the gas, check the oil, second, maybe third pull and it starts.

I was working in the garden on tomatoes and peppers this morning.

And was reminded that someone mentioned yesterday about cleaning out a relatives house of decades of junk.

Garden fertilizers and poisons are serious $$$ to buy new, and are often ensh*ittified these days – so if you have room for them it’s a nice kind thing to take home.

  25. nick flandrey says:

@paul, I’ve bought a couple of the cheap china carb kits and it’s much easier than cleaning and reassembling the factory carb.   ESPECIALLY if you try once and still don’t solve the problem.  Especially if the machine isn’t a critical machine.    And you won’t spray yourself in the eye with carb cleaner.

Knowing how, so you can if you have to, is good.   Spraying yourself with VOC solvents and getting them on your skin if you don’t need to is … less than smart.

I have been part of death panels twice now, once for my mother-in-law in 1997 ? and for my father last summer.  They have a valid place but one needs to proceed with caution.  In both cases, the persons were in a coma and could no longer speak for themselves.

It was incredibly sobering when the group of us realized that my father had not survived his gall bladder rupture from around two months before.  All of a sudden, I realized that everyone in the hospital room and the virtual family outside were looking at me to make the decision to let Dad go.  The hospital could keep Dad’s body going for months on end but we did not want to do that to him.  Now I realize that he had a major stroke three days before that day and was essentially gone.  It was a relief and a blessing to tell the doctors to stop treatment and take him to the hospice that we had located.  His body passed away in three days which told me that we made the right decision.

BTW, I leaned on my 84 year old uncle during this process.  Don’t be afraid to call relatives who cannot travel to the situation and ask for their advice.  I called my uncle several times and talked for an hour or more each time bringing him up to speed.  He is in stage 3 kidney failure himself and understood what was happening to my father, his brother-in-law for over 60 years.

His advice was basically, make a decision and don’t look back no matter what the consequences.  Excellent advice.

My mother is so looking back right now and revisiting all of our decisions.  I told her last Sunday my uncle’s advice and she did not argue.  Of course, her memory retention is about ten minutes so I had to tell her again twice.

    – used to be every estate sale I went to, the garage or shed would be heavy with the smell of crazy strong poisons.   And there were always brown bottles that the labels had fallen off of.   Old boy kept the “good stuff” just in case, but never needed it.

Some of those sheds were like a superfund site.   I’d get the heII out as soon as I smelled that smell.

A singular post apocalyptic science fiction book, no sequel or prequel that I know of. I read the well printed and well bound trade paperback published by Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group in 2012 that I bought new on Amazon in 2026.

The book starts several years after more than 99% of the human population is killed by a SuperFlu followed by a blood disease similar to AIDS. Hig lives in an an abandoned airport with his dog Jasper. His prepper buddy lives in the house next door and protects them from the armed scavengers. Hig flies an old Cessna around, trying to warn off the armed scavengers but some are stupid anyway and try to steal their food and arms. And then things change yet again and Hig is devastated.

The movie by Ridley Scott is coming out in August 2026. I look forward to seeing it.

“(The Daily Caller)—The Department of Justice announced Tuesday it was suing Denver, Colorado, over a ban on modern semiautomatic firearms, citing its inclusion of the AR-15.”

“Denver passed the ban in 1989, shortly after a gunman with a lengthy arrest record used a semiautomatic rifle that bore a superficial resemblance to the AK-47 to kill multiple children at a Stockton, California, day care center. In court documents, the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division said the ordnance targeting so-called “assault weapons” should not be enforced against those who owned AR-15s with 30-round magazines, the standard capacity for the rifle.”

““There cannot be the slightest question that millions of Americans have chosen to equip themselves with AR-15 style rifles with standard capacity magazines, and they use those ordinary semiautomatic rifles for a variety of lawful purposes, including but not limited to self-defense,” the DOJ said in the complaint filed Tuesday in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado.”

Community College Professor Pleads Guilty in 2023 Death of Jewish Man, Paul Kessler

In an unscheduled court appearance Tuesday morning, Loay Alnaji, the Muslim community college professor/pro-Hamas agitator who assaulted and killed a Jewish man during protests following the October 7 attacks on Israel, pled guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and felony count of battery causing serious bodily injury, with a serious felony enhancement and aggravating factors of weapons use and vulnerable victim for both counts.

Alnaji faces up to four years in prison for each felony count, and will be sentenced in June.

At the time of Kessler’s death, Alnaji and his supporters claimed that Kessler was the aggressor and he “slipped.” They also claimed Alnaji and his fellow agitators were simply peaceful protestors, but video RedState published at the time contradicts that. Kessler and his fellow pro-Israel counter-protesters were stationed across the street from the pro-Hamas mob, but the mob crossed to come to him and get in his face.

In this video, taken as Kessler was being loaded into an ambulance, you can hear the pro-Hamas agitators’ blatant antisemitism at the 0:45 mark: “Hitler didn’t want you, Hitler didn’t want you, Hitler didn’t want you, Hitler should’ve smashed you.” The man shouting into the bullhorn has been identified as Mamdouh Elalami, ISSV’s 2023 Man of the Year.

Alnaji, a naturalized citizen originally from Jordan, has been on paid administrative leave from the Ventura County Community College District, where he was a computer science professor and faculty advisor for the Muslim Student Association, since his arrest in 2023.

It’s not clear from this report how many felonies are involved, but any sentence less than 20 years is inadequate.

And–WTAF–where is the hate crime charge?

These are California state court proceeding, and the feds would be well–advised to file charges and get some federal convictions, because the criminal bigots running the state of California have a 50% off coupon on sentences and will bend over backwards to release this filth even sooner.

The State Department needs to revoke his citizenship–his words are likely proof that he lied on his application–and put him on the list for immediate deportation after release. They also need to take a close look at his family and punt them across the ocean if warranted.

Multiple D.C. Police Officials Getting the Axe for Crime Stats Antics

The Washington Post reported Monday that multiple high-ranking D.C. police officials have been notified that they are soon to be served their walking papers amid allegations that they fudged crime data to make themselves look better.

Rep James Comer is hot on this one and vows more to come.

Inasmuch as those phone stats were probably used to justify getting federal grant money, led to promotions for “success” in dealing with crime, etc., it seems there is are criminal and civil charges, clawback of salary, and other hurty things that could be done to these grifter liars.

Another thing the US federal government should do is start taking a very hard look at naturalized US citizens. Part of the naturalization process is swearing allegiance to the US and renouncing allegiance to all other nations. It’s obvious on even casual interaction with naturalized citizens that a lot of them, probably over half, view themselves as Indian or Jordanian or whatever, and harshly criticize the US (ie, Trump) for not supporting their home country. I’m not sure where the line is, but I’d be inclined to take a very harsh view of such criticism.

Part of the naturalization process is swearing allegiance to the US and renouncing allegiance to all other nations.

I believe since the days of Clinton, or maybe even Carter, they dropped the renouncing part.

Elect incompetents or anti-Americans, reap the consequences.

  60. SteveF says:

Just checked. The “renounce” part is still there. Maybe it was dropped and restored.

“I’d be inclined to take a very harsh view of such criticism”

I’d be inclined to de-naturalize any of our citizens standing with them. Perhaps difficult to do, so leave that problem for last.

see Hale’s “The Man Without a Country”

and I’d end dual citizenship–you’re a citizen of the United States and no other country, or you aren’t a citizen of the United States. It wasn’t long ago that people with potential dual citizenship were forced to choose when they became of age–see the character Yigal in Michener’s The Drifters (1971)

California City Sues State, Citing ‘Enticement’ of Illegal Aliens Under Federal Smuggling Statute

The city argues that offering illegal aliens drivers’ licenses and various protections is essentially illegal enticement under the federal statute that outlaws human smuggling.

The lawsuit specifically cites a section of federal law that “makes it an offense for any person who encourages or induces” someone to live in the U.S. without legal status. Lawson pointed to California policies that allow people without legal status to access drivers licenses, disability insurance and in-state tuition.

Let’s see if this one has legs.

In-state tuition is also illegal discrimination based on national origin.

I’m ordering a “NICE” hat just as soon as they finalize the logo.

…except clothing/hats/etc with an agency’s official logo can only be worn by agency employees. There’s probably a federal law that has significant penalties for non-employee usage.

I guess you could design your own, though. As long as it’s not similar to the official one. But not something I would risk.

Replace one of the others when the opprtunity arises for Trump or his successor*.

Yup, we have got two candidates in the green room.  Maybe a third one in Florida that will need a new job soon as he is term limited to be governor again after January 2027. I like former governors as President if they are conservatives.

All gun laws are unconstitutional.   ALL of them.   The language of the 2A is pretty clear, and where the Founders wanted exceptions to the As, they listed them.

The shooting war kicked off with an attempted gun grab, and the Founders were revolutionaries who fought off a tyrannical government with “weapons of war.”

There are some biggies that need to be repealed.   NFA in ’34, again in 1965, and then in the ’80s as well.   That would go a long way towards getting us back on track.
