Probably clear and wet. It rained all day yesterday so wet is almost a guarantee. I am also thinking “cool” like mid 60sF cool, or maybe low 70sF cool.
I spent the morning yesterday doing office stuff. Spent the afternoon drive around and pickup auction stuff. Spent the evening doing more computer stuff.
Today, I’m sleeping in a bit, then I’ll see what the weather is like. Inside work or outside work? We’ll see.
There is always work.
And stacking.

Saturday. Good morning!
A strange, liminal day between yesterday’s public holiday and Sunday tomorrow. Some places just stay closed, others are open for the liminal day. Fortunately, the recycling park close to the BOL is open, so I will be going there once or thrice with detritus from the garage.
There is some rain forecast. The clouds at dawn were threatening – red sky in the morning, shepherd’s warning – but nothing came of them, and now it is sunny and warm. The rain forecast persists, though, so I applied some Miracle Gro fertiliser to the lawn, to stunt the dandelions. We are surrounded by pasture land, so the air is full of seeds, and there is no getting rid of them, but the MG does knock them back.
A hasty breakfast, then back to the hunt for
Red Octoberthe workbench…Have a splendid day!
That got a guffaw! 🙂 No-one is betterer than Chicken Boy.
Mmmm. Possibly the best non-bacon breakfast sandwich…
Two thick slices of white bread, cut fresh from the loaf. Toasted to just this side of burnt. Butter, then a smear of Hellman’s*, two thicknesses of sliced cooked ham, mayo in-between, sliced ripe tomatoes with salt and black pepper, then top with bits of mature Irish cheddar cheese sliced thin off the block.
Divine. Crunchy, unctuous, juicy, salty, peppery and the umami hit on top. The same ingredients make an excellent toasted sandwich, but the technique is a bit more complex.
* W1 spotted Hellmann’s in glass jars at the local supermarket. They unfortunately didn’t have the tiny jars, so I got a couple of the jam-jar sized ones. I don’t like the taste of Hellmann’s from their plastic packaging. I prefer the tiny jars, as the spread is always fresh.
Foodies would say that buying mayonnaise is shocking. I know how to make my own, but I prefer Hellmann’s for a sandwich. I have seen it used in the kitchens of one of the fancy London hotels (the Ritz or maybe Claridges) for making dainty cucumber sandwiches for high tea, I can’t be completely wrong.
I notice they just mark it “Hellmann’s Real” now, no mention of mayonnaise. Odd.
OK. A Liège waffle with a fresh cup of tea, then back to work.
That’s one interpretation.
But answer this: If someone deliberately and repeatedly performs acts which make someone else look bad, would you call him a good person? Would you not, in fact, be inclined to call him a bad person?
Denis’s early morning posts are put up as a result of deliberate acts. I don’t think that this can be argued.
Denis’s early morning posts make the rest of us look lazy. This, too, cannot be argued.
I leave you to draw your own conclusion.
I never understood the urge to slobber sauces all over sandwiches and such. If you have a good piece of meat, properly cooked, and some good bread or rolls, ideally fresh baked, why would you want anything to get in the way of those flavors and textures?
At the sacred institutions around here, sauce isn’t provided unless you ask.
And don’t ask.
Buc-ee’s has sauce on their famed brisket sandwich, but only a teeny amount, enough to provide some flavor in a gas-fired mass production process necessary for the right texture at scale.
When fresh, the combination of sauce and meat is ok, but don’t let the sandwich sit for more than a couple of hours, even in a refrigerator.
Lately Buc-ee’s sells what I term a “dog pack” of brisket, slices without sauce, and my wife will bring that home for me if she stops on the way back from somewhere. Even if left for a couple of days in a refrigerator, the dog pack makes a couple of good sandwiches.
IKEA meatballs at home absolutely need a dot of British brown sauce. HP will do in a pinch, but Daddies Favourite is better.
And even Daddies is not what it used to be. Hecho en The Netherlands.
Newer Buc-ee’s with more display space will also sell “no sauce” brisket sandwiches, but the texture of the bread can get mushy interacting with the (limited) grease from the meat for too long.
I’m up early. Did I post before Chickenboy?
Sounds to me like you need glasses, Mr Pilot.
Trump Fired the National Science Board. Good. Here’s Who He Should Put on It

The litmus tests should exclude anyone who has helped pull the global warming train or suppressed dissenting voices over Kungflu..
Author David Randall provides 15 names that are “not endorsements”. Two of these are Judith Curry and Elon Musk.
Pass on Curry. A good choicemade less good by too many years compromising in the global warming academia. Try Steve Macintyre, who has spent years butting up against a rigged system with a political agenda.
Pass on Elon Musk. Too busy. How about “Big Balls”?
I’d also give a special appointment to SteveF as an Agent of Change to make sure the lowers in the organization are properly enthusiastic about the changes. [note to self–buy window stock]
Oh, Mr. SteveF is Chickenboy? I thought it was Mr. Ray.
I’m curious, Denis. What is the ingredients list on European Hellman’s?
I avoid seed oils when I can. In the US, all the commercial mayo uses soybean oil as a major ingredient Even the ones that say “Avocado oil” on the front label..
That’s the main reason I make my own mayo when I make cole slaw or creamy salad dressings. I use Olive oil and excellent eggs.
@SteveF, in re: sauces. I think we’ll have to agree to disagree. I can’t imagine a turkey on rye without a good slathering of mayo, same for a BLT. I prefer the cold turkey sandwiches on Black Friday over the hot turkey on Thanksgiving.
Nah, I am Methane Man.
The problem with Quicken seems to resolved.
I have detailed transactions in Quicken, categorized, for the last 16 years. I had data back to 1990 but the file got too big so I eliminated anything before 2010. I can find out how much I have spent at Walmart. I know how much our last trip to Germany, or Texas cost. I forecast transactions 90 days ahead. I have about 30 accounts for various purposes and Quicken helps track those accounts.
Mayonnaise. Ugh. Made from mucus and goat jizz.
MrAtoz, Denis has been calling me Chickenboy for months. Maybe you never noticed because you’ve been busy with the move and what-not. I suppose it’s possible. Or maybe early-onset dementia is hitting you. You can get your daughters’ opinion on that. Because children always have a clear and unbiased view of their parents, right?
BLT and cold turkey both need plenty of mayo and much to W1’s chagrin mustard on mine. Good old French’s. For sausages you can’t beat Beaver Sweet Hot. (seriously but the jokes make them selves)
I’m Chickenboy, the pilot! 😉
That doesn’t make any sense. Chickens would make terrible pilots. No depth perception.
That doesn’t come up in “Chicken Run”.
65F and sunny with a moderately gusty wind. And yep, lots of moisture around.
Coffee is ready, as is my breakfast sandwich so I’ll be back.

Can Our Civilization Survive Its Betrayal By Elites?
https://hotair.com/david-strom/2026/05/02/can-our-civilization-survive-its-betrayal-by-elites-n3814514
Yes, if we start putting people down like the animals they are.
Along with the elites who set them on us.
In some cases a mercy shot may be warranted before feeding them into the wood chipper. Some. Very few.
Ok, I was going thru photos on my phone and actually looked up the battery I’ve been harvesting… It was ~$1000 new. F me. Even on ebay used they’re asking $100…
The only potential difficulty is that it’s 24v nominal. I just have to pair it with 24v panels and inverters… Worst case, I could use one panel each, and the inverters I’m getting with it and just plug one thing at a time….
n
And the air pump I got at auction will be a good backup for my BOL septic system.

Which oil in Hellman’s here? I will look it up. It used to be sunflower, (pretty sure they made a point of that in their old advertising), but I suspect it is now rapeseed.
If I am making aïoli, I use olive oil. For a lighter mayonnaise, I prefer almond or sunflower oil. Have’t tried avocado. A splash of sesame oil gives an interesting oriental note for some dishes.
Apparently SteveF needs essence of goat in his mayo. Too bad you don’t like mayonnaise, Chicken Boy – you would have lovely fresh eggs for making your own… Have you tried Zabaglione?
I agree with SteveF about hot-meat sandwiches not needing sauce. If the meat is succulent, that is usually sauce enough, although sometimes a dab of mustard is good to cut through very greasy meat, like pork belly.
Butchers in Bavaria do divine Schweinewammerlsemmel (hot roast belly pork in a crusty bread roll). Opinions are divided on whether mustard is desirable for those.
Cold meat, on the other hand seems to me often to benefit from a smear of mayo, relish or mustard, like my breakfast sandwich.
It’s bedtime here, so I better stop thinking about food, or I won’t sleep… Goodnight!
The quest for the workbench continues tomorrow… too much excitement.
GF worked in the garage today, trying to find the floor, so I was guilty enough to join her and try to find the top of my workbench.
Neither of us were entirely successful, but progress was made. We are supposed to have good weather tomorrow, too, so we will continue.
Some stuff at the curb for the pickers, 2 contractor bags of trash, and a big stash of cardboard boxes, broken down. Not bad.
If I actually get to the workbench top, I should snap a picture for posterity.
The jar of Hellman’s in my fridge has soybean oil. I don’t use a lot so I don’t worry about “evil seed oils” Kraft mayo is good, I just like Hellman’s better.
I use to buy HEB’s mayo. Tasted just like Hellman’s but a $1.50 less a jar. The last jar I bought was watered down. As in, stick to your knife about as well as French or Ranch dressing. Yeah, that extra two ounces of water makes a difference.
I got a brisket out of the freezer today. 11 and a half pounds. Sell by April xx, ’16. If my thermostat is true, my freeze sits at about minus 15 F.
Yeah, and I found a ham! I thought I had a ham, not spiral cut, sure didn’t remember eating it. I was looking in the wrong freezer. So I have a decent size ham and two more briskets in the freezer. No telling what else is burrowed down between the bags of emu fat.
I need to get off my butt and render the fat. I can freeze the oil and save a lot of freezer space.
I looked again at Lynn’s latest find in Abilene. Oh, there’s the front door.. Def looks like they don’t use it… the back porch is better.
Flooring looks like the stuff I had installed here a few months ago. I like the stuff.
The barn/man cave, I want that. I can put all of my stuff in there, tractors, cars, stuff known as junk, and everything is out of the weather. The washer and dryer is in the bathroom? Super! Get filthy, strip and duds go in the washer and butt goes in the shower. Plus the huge living area downstairs. Nice place.
It’s 99ºF outside, but 75ºF in my garage. Thank you mini-split!
75F outside.
I cut the back yard grass with the string trimmer and have been going thru some of the stuff stacked on the patio. I thought I had a new carb for the cr@ppy harbor fright pressure washer I have here, but I couldn’t find it. I did sort some of the other small engine supplies.
And I threw out a few small things, mostly trash.
Found some chains for my boat trailer.
I’m going back out in a minute.

“A Taint in the Blood: A Novel of the Shadowspawn, #1” by S. M. Stirling
https://www.amazon.com/Taint-Blood-Novel-Shadowspawn/dp/0451463684?tag=ttgnet-20
Book number one of a three book fantasy science fiction series. I read the well printed and well bound MMPB published by ROC in 2011 that I bought from Amazon in 2025. I have ordered the following two books in the series.
A long time ago, Homo Nocturnus ruled the Earth. They called themselves Shadowspawn. They were the source of all of the myths and legends about fantastic powers and shapechangers. And human blood drinkers that we called vampires.
Adrian Brézé is one of the Shadowspawn. He gave up their lifestyle for a life amongst the humans. But his twin sister Adrienne has kidnapped his girlfriend Helen to be a part of her harem of blood Lucys.
