Sat. Feb. 5, 2022 – still winter. busy day, sorta. Early for sure.

By on February 5th, 2022 in decline and fall, personal, WuFlu

Still cold.  It got up to 33F yesterday and stayed there for most of the afternoon, evening, and through the night.  Predicted to be cold all weekend.  I may have to bring at least one heater home and set it up in the garage just to keep stuff from freezing in there.

Spent the day on auction stuff.  Kids were home from school, and wife was working from home *cough*.   My wife and eldest went to GS horse camp for the weekend, and were packing and double checking through the day.  Got them out of the house around 6pm, then youngest and I watched Addams Family Values for about the 10th time.  Still funny though.  It’s the one with the summer camp and the play within the play…  Joan Cusack is great as the “Black Widow.”  The whole series of movies are outstanding and did a better job of the TV show than the show did.  Perennial favorites in our house.

Today starts early with youngest at a basketball game.   After that, I’ve got some auction pickups.  If it’s still super cold there will be limits to what I’m willing to do outside or at my storage (hands HURT in the cold) so I’ll have to find indoor stuff.  I’m sure that won’t be a problem.  Since I can’t sleep in, I’m off…..

How are you fixed for glasses? Dentures? Other non-durable medical stuff?   Get some and stack it up.

Sacrilege! The TV show was incredibly well cast/acted even if the scripts were weak at times. MeTV has it every day at 5PM CT.

Sadly, MeTV does not have "The Munsters" right now as well, but "Munsters Go Home" is in the regular "Svengoolie" rotation.

    At basketball game now. Chilly

Or circuit board. That was the last call on our ancient upstairs unit with similar symptoms but air still moving and AC functional.

With gas, you might luck out and it will be the igniter.

Both are spendy, but a decent service place will give you a credit towards a new unit within six months since they can reuse the parts from either repair.

I opted against the new unit. The tech would only give quotes on multi-stage or variable speed systems that required replacing the thermostat.

He said, “You don’t want on-off-on-off. I’ll give you a quote on that only if you’re selling the house soon.”

    “That’s exactly what I want.”

I suspect Oncor subsidizes the thermostats with wireless protocols which will eventually allow ERCOT to control the systems remotely.

Also keep in mind that things look very different from two years on than they did in the first months.  Go and re-read whatever contemporaneous source you like, as long as you are sure they aren't retconning the articles, for a reminder of what it looked and felt like.

Half of the population is still scared "beyond the capacity for rational thought" (thank you Harold Ramis) or we wouldn't still be debating vaccine and mask mandates. I imagine that there are still regulars here who harbor beliefs that the reluctant should be held down for their jabs as was voiced in the forums a year ago.

A couple of series to recommend, both on Kindle Unlimited.

The "Golden Age of the Solar Clipper" by Nathan Lowell. Here is a link to the first 3 of the main series. There are several sequels and a parallel series. It's a series about life on commercial freight starships.
    https://amzn.to/3HHueRS

And a series that Lowell recommended in his monthly update, the "Backyard Starship" series. Here's the first, about a guy that discovers a starship in his grandfather's barn. Complications ensue. I'm on book four.

The Damsel Series by PS Power. In a world of superpowered individuals running around in tights and capes, an ordinary woman gets tired of being victimized and takes steps to be the damsel no more.

I like this series because she does it through willpower and hard work, not some cheat like finding a magic rock which grants superpowers.

Note that there are currently five books in the series, not the four shown on the Amazon series page. The other can be found on the author page, along with a bazillion other books. He's rather prolific.

Anything by Francis Porretto. He writes fantasy, science fiction, and could-be-real-world. Not all of his stories are to my taste (eg, slice-of-life romances) but the quality of writing is exquisite.

Trudeau probably wants to come out of hiding at some point and backed off the request to seize the money.

Again, though, roughly half of the population on both sides of the border are scared enough to support the authoritarian antics of their elected officials. If the support was, say, just 25% of the population, masks would have been gone already and the vaccine mandates never even proposed as OSHA rules.

OSHA wasn't responding to a groundswell of public sentiment, they were responding to the executive branch's stated desires.

Teacher's unions, captured entirely by marxists, have driven some of the decisions but over the loud and vigorous objections of 'the people'.

There are surely people who trusted, and bought into it early on, some of whom have too much personally invested in the idea to end it, because their sacrifices and beliefs would be invalidated if they had to admit to change.  But I look around and the vast majority I see are over it.

Bidn's insistence on a horror show of a deadly Christmas was the last straw.  Didn't happen.   Everyone in our school circle has tested positive and been sick at this point*, and they aren't dying anymore, nor do they know anyone dying, or even really sick.   It's an inconvenience at this point for most.

The mandates were driven by the C-suites needing cover for going along with the administration on voluntary mandates, throwing their employees under the bus in return for keeping the government contracts and stimulus money flowing.

The cabal thought they could get away with it because roughly half of the population is still scared. I actually believe the percentage is higher in the suburbs of DC and the tech hub areas, the seat of the Dems power right now.

My perceptions are likely skewed by where I live. It's near Albany NY, but I very seldom go into the city (or the other medium-size swamp cities near Albany) and most of the people I talk to are from small towns closer to the mountains. A lot of people continue to wear face diapers in stores, but it's more a matter of going along and not causing trouble than a matter of supporting them. They lack courage but that's a different failing than active support for worse-than-useless measures.

I don't think half of the public supports masking per se, but half are still scared and want *something* visible done, no matter how meaningless, much like the kabuki with air travel after 9/11.

I actually think the percentage of people who are scared in my area is much higher than 50%.

Texas overall is still 50-50. If it wasn’t, Robert Francis wouldn’t be running for Governor with rolling blackouts as the only issue that could possibly put him over the top if they happen. The money people would have moved on by now.

As for vaccine mandates, my guess is that the thought process beyond hardcore Progs goes something like, "Well, if I rolled up my sleeve, the guy next door is going to take his medicine too … and like it … even if I have to hold Skippy down myself."

    @Kenneth Wilson:

The 500 errors are very mysterious, and there is nothing common about the comment text that caused the error. It appears to be a firewall rule that catches some strange sequence of characters in the comment message. But very intermittent. And hard to duplicate.

When it occurs, you can usually hit the back button on your browser, then copy all of your comment to the clipboard. Then replace the text with a word or two, save it, then edit the comment and paste back in your original content. That usually seems to work.

    Interesting.

MOCA is old tech. I have a coax feed for Internet from my cable modem location to our home office and an outlet behind the TV in the living room. I get ~ 30 Mbps across the MOCA 1.1 link — good enough to stream HD.

I have no experience with 2.0. When it first hit, it lacked crypto and couldn't mix with 1.1 so I held off buying a pair to experiment.

MOCA would offer an easy way to bring it in from outside (often the roof or eave) since most houses have some of that in place.I have a dish on the edge of my roof but the cable has been re-used for standard cable.

I power cycled the router and the radio.  Re-booted Emu.  That did no good but it was something to try.

The ISP comes back up and Kiwi can connect.  I can't.  I changed my DNS server from 192.168.0.25 (the router's address) to x.x.x.24 (the Pi-Hole.  And wah-la!

Huh.  Must have flushed a cache somewhere.

Today I was out in the EDC and thought to run a speed test on Moa.  Fast.com.  Can't connect.  Same for Google.  I got into the router's settings and turned Enable DNS Relay on and it worked.

Moa hasn't been rebooted since, I don't know, I replaced the UPS?

Oh… that's an easy way to keep that box of of the Internet!  But it breaks the ability of the Squeezebox to play internet radio stations.

I know how to fix it.  Maybe tomorrow when it's warmer.  Before I change Moa's DNS setting, I'll see what ipconfig /flushdns does.  Because Science!

MOCA is old tech. I have a coax feed for Internet from my cable modem location to our home office and an outlet behind the TV in the living room. I get ~ 30 Mbps across the MOCA 1.1 link — good enough to stream HD.

I have MOCA for my 300/?? mbps cable internet.  I bought my own Arris surfboard DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem when I bought this house.  We don't have fiber in this neighborhood, too spread out with the 1 or 2 acre lots.

    Completed the Reacher series.
Man, was it good! Very pleased with the quality of the acting and how well they captured the spirit of the character. Very good adaptation, I thought. I’ll watch it again w/my husband when kiddo is elsewhere. Some pretty gross scenes, not enough to detract from overall excellence.

Zombiefied the rest of the day. Daughters drum lesson, coffee, family browsing at used record store. Lunch and chores at home.
Since we all went to drums I snuck off to the acoustic guitar room. Played a cherry wood Seagull S6 acoustic with the electronics for amplification. Really nice tone, great intonation, bold sound. I’ve already got an S6+Folk with cedar top from 2001, I bought it off e-bay around 2004, it’s got good sound. I sure did like playing that cherry wood today, though.

It’s warm today. I need to get moving and use the last hour of daylight productively as I was mostly a slug all day.

Two rabbits to process. Two does need nest boxes. Seven kits need to have outdoor digs as they are outgrowing their bankers box in the bathroom.

Adulting. Not what I was led to believe as a child -laughter-

"Antigravity machines and impeller drives are both waiting to be invented. The inventor of either will be rich if they can hold onto the patents."

    Not likely.

If the inventor is OUS the first we will hear of it is the last day the US exists. Our intelligence agencies will be stone ignorant, but they will be fully woke.

If the inventor is US, the first we will hear of it is 10 years after the inventor was thrown into prison. That will be 8 years after the tech was stolen by Chinese and Russian spies., and 7 years after we have a new MAD standoff in space that was covered up and denied by the US gov't until they could no longer play whack-a-mole with reports on the internet fast enough to keep the monkey in the barrel.

Urk!  Looks like the next project. Thought I had done all testing. Shortening disabled for now.

    I think it's a cable problem.

Browser back got me a blank field the last two time I got ISE 500.

I suspect that ISE 500 is much more likely when trying to post from a page that has not been recently refreshed.

Lots of reports of UFOs all over the place doing freaking weird gyrations.  Somebody has probably invented antigravity already.  And possibly impeller drive systems as there are no visible exhausts.

    Oldie but a goodie.

MOCA 4,4’-methylene-bis(ortho-chloroaniline) is an amine-based chain extender used in the  polyurethane elastomer industry for about sixty years.

Shoot, just wait until all those electric 18 wheelers hit the grid.  Now that will bring the grid right down to its knees.

    https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-Adapter-Ethernet-Bonded-MM1000/dp/B077Y3SQXR?tag=ttgnet-20/

So this unit is $69, while the Starlink ethernet adapter is $20.

I'd read that Starlink wasn't making any money on the actual terminals; they may not be making any money on the other components either.

Nope. When I look at the main request log files, I can see that the 500 error happened because the firewall rules saw something they didn't like. So the request returns a 500 error.

The firewall rules are maintained by the host, so I don't have access to them to investigate further. I do know that the errors are not due to WordPress code, or theme code, or plugins.

Although I very rarely get a 500 on my comments, I still always Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C the comment before I submit.

see my previous comments that it's a front for a DoD project.   DoD is the real end user, so the civilian users are just cover, or a distraction.   Russia can kill sats in orbit, so DoD needs to move away from systems using a small number of sats.   They have let contracts and asked for RFPs and run pilot programs for tunneling secure comms thru COTS 'space based' networks.    How else does a private company get approval to fill the sky with sats over the (very short lived) protests of astronomers and others?

There's still a ways to go — Starlink will likely need at least 10,000 satellites in orbit before it can claim to offer full service to a majority of the globe (and SpaceX has shown signs that it wants as many as 42,000 satellites in the constellation).Jan 10, 2022

42K- and somewhere I read 55K.  That's a lot of bright sparks in the sky.
