More heat and humidity inbound although maybe a little less of both. IDK what the high ended up being yesterday, but it was only 87F when I checked temps at my rent house around 4:30pm. Some people got rain (Sugar Land, I’m looking at you) but we didn’t get anything at my house.
I did get some stuff done. Rent house visit ate some time, but I got some nice media stuff at Goodwill afterward. I did a pickup of something for D2 that took me to a part of Houston with no good freeway access. The bad surface street traffic was one reason we didn’t move there when we were looking for a new home, and the cachet of the area dropped rapidly after the bad flooding. It went from being a premier area for suburban living in classic McMansions to vacant homes, hair braiding salons, and halal food joints. And in only a few years.
Today I’ve got pickups to do, and meeting with a new auction company, hopefully to start consigning with and to get some of my stuff S O L D sold.
Mechanic is working on the quote for the work on the Ranger. Is it worth it to spend money on a 23 yo truck? Where else am I going to find a body on frame small truck without a black box, display screen, built in tracking, and (soon) a remote kill switch? It has ABS and air bags and cruise control and that’s all the “features” I want or need. I can add a backup cam if I want one, ditto for TPMS, and for an android based entertainment system. That I haven’t done so already shows how little I really want that though.
The truck has no rust, only 180K miles, and runs great. I should be able to get another 50K miles (more than 10 years the way I drive) if I don’t give it to D2. The sale value of the truck might be close to what this round of mechanical restoration is going to cost, but not having all the extra cr@p that comes with a modern vehicle is looking very good to me. I’m even thinking of buying a Ranger that’s a couple of years newer for myself, and giving it to D2. Lots of nice Rangers on the road.
Older, sturdier, simpler. Tools, trucks, and wives all benefit from those.

I would suggest trying one litte tweak. If you can get dried ham in a block, rather than as slices, experiment with making little cubes of it. They will have to be small, because ham is very salty and chewy, but I think the right amount to chew would set off nicely against the lusciousness of the ripe melon and the slightly springy mozzarella texture.

re: alcohol fuel
I am not a camper, backpacker, bushcrafter, or rugged outdoor survivalist. But I have gone through phases of watching the various videos of such people. And I have put together kits of gear to see me through adverse events like hurricanes. There are overlaps.
One niche area is small alcohol cookstoves you can make yourself from aluminum cans. Soda cans and vienna sausage cans and cat food cans are popular choices. A little scissor work, a little drilling with very small drill bits, and you can get a lightweight, compact stove.
I made a few of them, and bought bottles of Heet gas tank additive to fuel them. I even tested them my making tea in the park. They work. Not fast, not super big, but enough for survival.
I can’t say it’s universal, but I clearly remember my takeaways from watching those videos are: pre-measure your fuel, limit the quantity, and don’t refuel until the stove is dead and cold.

As he was coming back through Canada, the border patrol somehow figured out he was in Cuba and “detained” him for a couple of days. They never filed charges but they warned him that next time they would arrest him for sure.
The next time he was more careful and went through Brazil. The fishing was awesome.

I have done a fair amount of cooking on spirit stoves on boats. They use methylated alcohol with some additive that turns the flame purple, so it is more visible.
On boats, there is a safety toss-up between propane, which likes to sink to the bilges and create an explosive mixture, and spirits, which burn hot and hard to see. I prefer the spirit stove.

I’ve got a marine alcohol stove, and I’ve made a couple “penny” or “hobo” stoves from cans. I’ve got a pallet of alcohol in storage and cases of methanol… so it’s useful and a good backup as brewing up some alcohol is a traditional craft. It’s also dangerous. The glass decorative “firepits” are a disaster waiting to happen, especially among the tide pod eating crowd that never played with matches or fire as a kid.

It’s cheaper than some other destination wedding packages we looked at, has more for your guests to do, and NO ONE does hospitality like Disney. We had a wedding coordinator, transportation coordinator, catering coordinator, and a whole group of minions with earpieces and radios making sure everything went well. We used our own photographer, videographer, and officiant but you could get those as part of the deal too. Weddings at WDW are a big deal and can be as big or little as you want.

I wish that I had a backup camera in my 2008 Highlander. I just cannot see out of the back of that vehicle with my neck issues. It does have the warning beepers though when you are backing over something.

There’s a ton of in-car cameras available. Even some that replace the rear-view mirror. Routing of the power to the display and/or camera is a consideration. Since most are powered by 12VDC, you could tap into the supply wire for the overhead console light to reduce wires hanging around. A camera at the rear could tap into the 12VDC lighter socket in the rear of the Highlander. You might even find 12VDC in the right-rear wheel well covering (used for the optional OEM hitch wiring). Check with the http://www.toyotanation.com independent forum for ideas about your model.
Some setups are smarter than others; automatic crash recording, front and rear-facing cameras in single unit, even rear-only cameras. Some mount inside the window glass. Or embedded in the license plate frame. Some have displays built into the camera; other will display on your phone. Some have GPS tracking. Some have motion detection while parked, although that requires a powered connection (although some may have internal batteries to reduce that need). Tons of possible features.
You could create a list of features needed, and then ask Amazon’s AI to find a selection of cameras that meet your needs and mounting/wiring requirements. Costs are about $80+, so a reasonable cost compared to neck pain or body work or insurance costs.

All my feces end up in a septic tank in the side yard of my house or my office building. Every year or three I call out a vacuum truck and they pump everything out. Much better than an outhouse but still a pain in the buttocks.
I haven’t researched any specific models, but I suspect that many will come with stereo functions, and possibly a CD system. A bit more back-and-forth with duck.ai with your specific model info / existing unit, plus required features, might give you more specific unit mfg/model info. And a visit with a place like Car Toys (national chain, so assuming they have good info/sources) might be in order.
Replacing the whole head unit will be more than the dash cam / backup cam units you can find on Amazon. Some come with cellphone-sized screens that you could mount to your dash.

I know a guy who used to do car stereo, CB radio, and ham radio installations in vehicles. He shut down his business, but I’m sure there are lots of stereo shops that are used to snaking wires around your car invisibly. You might also try RV shops. They put rear view/backup cameras on trailers.
I installed my own ham radio in my F-150. It took some time and effort, and more time looking up at the dash from below than I’d like, but it was doable. I had to snake power and antenna wires through the firewall and from the dash under the doorsills to the back wall of the cab. And a bit more. All out of sight.
IIRC, from my time in the Citizen’s Police Academy, HPD only requires officers fire 50 rounds in a year, and they have to buy them. There was some political nonsense too when the new chief required them to qualify not just shoot occasionally. That was several years ago and a couple of police chiefs…
They have about 5200 sworn officers to cover the whole Houston metro area. IIRC NYFC has 52000.

Be careful. I replaced the stereo unit on my 2003 Highlander. The installation missed something as the woofers in the door are powered. The signal to turn them off was missing from the installation and if I did not run the vehicle every three days the battery was dead. Toyota could not find the power drain, the guys that installed the stereo said it was not their problem.

I wanted to keep the garage from becoming so sweltering that it’s unpleasant to be there. So far, it’s working very well. Now, look at my hands. See those wiggling things on my hands? They are ALL THUMBS, which gives you an idea of my level of technical expertise. Even I didn’t have any problems installing it. It’s not very noisy, unobtrusive to look at, and has a wireless remote to turn it off or on.
I had considered a “mini-split”, with an external compressor coil, and I decided that it would be beyond my skills to install.

The office building I was working in in Abu Dhabi had 14″ thick concrete slab floors, HUGE steel beam skeleton, and was surrounded by open space inside a fence with a gate so massive it could stop tanks.
In Norway, every public space (and private space open to the public) had to have a bomb shelter. They were visible and accessible. No closed doors or locked gates. The MALL had stairs leading down to the shelter. The lowest point of the tunnels leading under the fjord had a huge set of gates to the defensive facility embedded there.

I installed a 9 inch Dasaita unit in my Forester about 5 years back. Fussy but straightforward. It has worked a treat, although the Tom Tom navigation app has puked into non-functionality. Wired Android Auto from my phone brings Google Maps instead. Also have an OBD reader hooked up to Torque app. Bluetooth connects phone for hands free calling. A supplemental USB SD card stores 250 gigs of music. Steering wheel buttons work transparently. OEM rear cam is just another app when not in Reverse. In Reverse, functions normally.
Recently upgraded to a 3 camera Vantrue dashcam. Again, fussy but straightforward wire hiding brings my own Big Brother black box GPS and cockpit recorder to a dedicated 512 GB SD card and phone app access.
Uniden Home Patrol police/fire/public whatever radio, CB/WX radio from Cobra and a Sirius XM mini screen round out electronic distractions.
