Nothing I’ve seen suggests that things are going to be better in 2021, except possibly we’ll have an effective and safe vaccine. I’ll let the other guys go first on that one… and wait until we’ve seen what happens with pregnant women and kids before making up my mind.
I’m ready to stay home for a while if they start to mandate things like papers to move around. Shortly after that the roundups starts, so I’ll be getting ready. History might not repeat but it rhymes, and we’ve heard this tune before. About two weeks ago my wife was able to order clorox wipes for curbside pickup from Target. Then they were gone again.
I’m still using some from March, every time I get back into my truck I clean my hands and forearms with them.

Subbing again today. Several teachers out so I am having to do double duty, without double pay.
One teacher has two classes, 2nd period and 5th period. So I am the art teacher 1st period, the other teacher the 2nd period, 3rd and 4th period back in art, 5th period back to the class I was supposed to sub. I have no idea what they are doing for art for 5th period. Really don’t care as it is a crappy bunch of students. Same class I had issue with the student that got thrown out.

Point taken. For many classes I am little more than a baby sitter. It is amazing the number of flat out stupid kids. “My Chromebook battery is dead, I can’t do my assignment.” Then find an outlet and plug in the charger. “I forgot my charger”. Then borrow one or go to the office and get a charger. “Oh yeh, I did not think of that.” Sometimes I think they are just yanking my chain.
Anyway, minimum wage job. Not given the resources that teachers have. No access to Google Classroom. No access to WiFi (I stole the password I am using). No idea what the teachers have assigned. Have no idea where stuff is located in the classroom. Schedules change without informing the subs. I am not putting a lot of effort into what I am doing in the classroom.
I wish I could do more. I don’t want to affect the teacher’s lesson plan. I do know that there are a lot of uneducated students coming out of the system. Mostly just memorized stuff. No ability to think, to research, to evaluate, to estimate, to comprehend. Teach to the standardized test answers, the rest does not matter.

My 60’s experience with public school was wider than most. We moved states every couple years, sometimes mid-year. Military brats were the only kids that moved more often than I.
Only really bit me once. The mid-year move caught me not knowing how to “borrow” for subtraction, but my new classmates had already covered that. My fix for the sample problems involved my “invention” of negative numbers, the existence of which was categorically denied. Discouraging when they were presented a year or two later.
Other rules and styles of admin gave me an unfavorable attitude of the silliness of the systems. I read a lot and widely to cope and to keep my head down.

WRT school, the teachers put out what is required. The state is so far up the school district’s colon that we had to become a “District of Innovation” to get the freedom to get exempted from some of the state rules. Anyone want to guess what hugely innovative changes we made??

We just RE-approved the FIVE we’ve made so far– change in start time for the year, change in start time for school days, change in attendance days required IF the student has good grades and passes the test, change in what we are allowed to pay teachers, and I can’t remember the last off the top of my head but it was along the same lines.
Some real innovation there.
Every year they create all their in-classroom teaching aids from scratch. Every year they redo their curriculum/syllabus from scratch. Every year they spend at least 3 days decorating notice boards in hallways.
They’ve layered SEL on top of everything else, starting last year and without any discussion AT ALL.
Half our schools are failing reading, the other half are maxed on test scores. What’s the difference? genetics and economics. and FWIW, we don’t have ANY schools in the district that are majority white.
The teachers are learning everything at at least 2 removes. They don’t learn to do math, they learn about how to learn a SYSTEM of math. More than half the ‘systems’ are the unvetted result of some PhD thesis and are completely novel. They keep inventing jargon and get farther and farther from common english every year. (I first came across the word “operationalize” in a mission statement for the Atlanta school district. Now I see that abomination in far too many places.)

Range hood? I want to replace mine. It’s a cheapo thing, they still make them.
I want to vent through the wall, like in an RV. Up through the cupboard is off of the table. I don’t have a lot of cabinet space in this crappy kitchen and losing most of what is above the range hood is not acceptable.
It seems I should be able to find a 30″ wide through the wall with 3 or 4 inch by 7 or 9 inch square duct. The square duct, not a round pipe.
No luck on Lowes or Home Depot. Or maybe I’m not searching correctly.
Our stove is in an island. It had a fairly ineffective downdraft system that died. I picked up a nice ‘over the island’ range hood at an estate sale some time ago. Suddenly, despite all the half done other projects, we’re cutting holes in the ceiling, spackling, doing electrical, etc.
All before she can paint the ceiling which was the driver. Because reasons. Painting ceilings is so far down my list you can’t see it from here.

The house was divorce settlement money from the first marriage for the female half of the landlord couple. Everything was done *her* way or the highway, including paint schemes which were way too dark for the already gloomy winters and half-a**ed closet organizer installations which I rebuilt properly on the sly with drywall anchors.
The kicker was that we had to surrender half our deposit, $700k, for repairs, including stains on the ceiling near the range hood vents. My wife actually cooked in that kitchen. Imagine!

My Dad just got his five year checkup for bladder cancer. They examine and treat the bladder through the penis. I went in one time and he had two half inch tubes running into his penis which they were running a solution through. For two days ! And his oncologist is a lady doctor. But, he is still alive and still has his bladder, the one inch tumor is long gone.
