Sat. May 30, 2020 – and the beat goes on…

Hot. Sunny. humid. Man, I need to change the batteries in my weather station.

Yesterday was hot, and humid, with lots of fluffy clouds and some blue sky. No rain at home or my secondary location.

I did auction pickups today, and went to my secondary to meet a guy about some stuff he bought but never picked up. It was buried, and I couldn’t get to it. Conveniently for him, it’s enough unburied that it could be pulled out for him. However, he stood me up. Rescheduled for this morning.

That made me late to our “Fifth Grade Graduation Parade.” I was a bit skeptical of the idea, and thought a 5th grade graduation was hokey anyway… but I’m glad I made it. I waved from the side of the road as dozens of decorated cars and trucks drove by with the kids waving back. I’d forgotten that I know all these kids from my Hands On Science class, and they think of me as a teacher, who some I’m sure wanted to see one last time. I was very happy to see the kids, and when they recognized me waving, they smiled and sat up and waved. It felt really good. I wasn’t thinking past my own kids, and that was a mistake. My daughter was in a great mood afterwards too.

Hit the takeout lane for our favorite greek casual dining and ate restaurant food for the first time in 2 1/2 months. And it was good.

That led right into story time, and bed, and then me checking the news.

Holy moly, the riots are coming. I hope everyone had been getting ready. I almost flubbed it myself. I’ll be carrying my bear spray today as I go back out to meet my buyer.

And I might stop by my favorite toy store and do a bit of meatspace relationship maintenance.

Then it’s back home to see if the pool has everything we need to set it up. Savvy readers will note that I skipped rotten potato cleanup, and delayed the pool project. Delayed but can’t avoid.

Dinner was restaurant food, and dang it was good.

Avoid crowds, keep your situational awareness higher than mine, and keep stacking.

Interesting sidebar to the situation in Minneapolis. Granted, I don’t know what Chauvin’s wife does for a living, but if he’s the single breadwinner, should a $200k condo in Windermere — a *nice* section of Orlando — with the associated property taxes ($4k/annually easy), insurance ($2-3k/annually) and condo fees (figure $5k in that neighborhood) be possible on a police officer’s salary? Clearly, Chauvin was anticipating that the maintenance of such would be possible on his pension.

As Dr. Pournelle often said, the middle class should possess the goods of fortune in moderation. That isn’t a Westgate timeshare. Whether or not Florida condos are a great investment (they’re not), the real estate is a “good of fortune” inaccessable to all but a very small percentage of the population.

Regardless of what happened which didn’t make the video, Chauvin is going to prison for a while as an example. Even a Simi Valley jury … cough … would have a hard time acquitting.

(Yes, Florida public records are scary, but if you are a *Florida* police officer, you can ask to have your information pulled offline.)

I’ve long believed that city cops will follow whoever holds the purse strings for their pensions, even Progs. The control freaks have been on the march in many states since the virus fiasco started. Gun confiscation will most likely have to be outsourced to extra-regional contractors, but don’t bet your life that locals won’t participate in the raiding parties for fun and profit.

And, don’t forget, mandatory vaccination is coming if Bill Gates’ fetish fantasies come true. How do you suppose that will be enforced?

Not only are riots coming, but the rioters get to wear “face coverings” of any kind. Talk about being embolden. I’m sure Mayors don’t want to be the first to proclaim “gatherings may NOT have masks.” They don’t want to be the “COVID Mayor.”

Virginia has mandatory Fear Masking. You can’t leave your house without a face covering per the orders of the KKKlansman Governor.

Management would like to have me visit the customer in Virginia this Summer, but between the Fear Masking and the current salary discrepancies between myself and the new hires, that already wasn’t happening, before the riots.

Tin foil hat time. What if the progs secretly want an acquittal? Think of the rioting protesting they could justify then…

yup, this was the mess I drove by. Timing is everything.

I’ll be driving my big truck today an trying mightily to stay north of this nonsense. I don’t think I’ll carry any armor or long guns… but my secondary is in the middle of what used to be black ghetto, and is now hispanic ghetto, with some blacks.

Joy. It would have been nice to finish my business yesterday. People suck.

Not before the election. Even afterwards, they will need the public’s cooperation for the mass vaccination program coming next year.

Six figures anyway. He’s been on the force for 18 or 19 years (hired in 2001). Plus, he was moonlighting that entire time, 17 years, as OD Security for that nightclub.

We always cook out of our food storage – it is just all part of the pantry. But this morning I made Paul bagle chaffles for breakfast and he said “Boy the only way this would be better was if I had some smoked salmon and thin sliced onion on it”. I said “We have smoked salmon” so he was able to enjoy a New York City breakfast. 🙂 Vacuum packed, it doesn’t expire until 2023 BUT I bought it on clearance at Big Lots two Christmases ago. It is very tasty! But there is a lot of salmon, so now we have to come up with a recipe for the leftovers. There’s a second pack, too.

One of the things that piss me off over this riot nonsense is that the media and commentators try to depict the “whole country” is in chaos and filled with rage. Bull carp. It’s only the most liberal controlled areas that decided to get big screen TVs and cases of Budweiser for free. Here in flyover country we don’t have any angst, riots, or looting.

The cop will be made an example because, in addition to the racial strive, he’s pulled back the curtain on the municipal employee rackets. He’s in the top 10% of household incomes if not 5%

Here in Texas, the cities of Dallas and Houston are technically insolvent due to long term pension obligations.

We enjoy salmon chowder. Might be too hot in your region for soup right now, but if it’s not, make a simple dairy based potato soup (or a light broth and smash up some of the potatoes to get that creamy texture), toss in the salmon roughly chopped (bite size) in near the end. If you want to lighten it up drop in some corn. It’s rich and filling. Good cold, too.

Another way we use smoked salmon is as an add on to baked potatoes.

Or a heavier tuna salad style sandwich filling.

Also very nice scrambled with eggs. Or on salad for lunch.

    -laughter- making myself hungry.

Salmon. I grew up eating the stuff. When I was little, we lived in Oregon and Dad did a lot of fishing. He took it to the cannery. I don’t know how many cases of salmon we moved from Oregon to Hawaii to California to Mobile…. but we still had 20 cans when we moved to Texas.

Yes, canned salmon lasts at least 13 years.

I had a salmon steak at I-Hop and it was really good. Until a few hours later when everything from toenails came up. I can’t stand the smell of salmon now.

  14. Nick Flandrey says:

I have a several of the costco smoked sliced salmon packs in the freezer. I want it with my breakfast sometimes.

I’ve got several of the smoked salmon on a plank packs that they sell at christmas time too. They last a long time.

home from my sale, stopped by my favorite gun seller for a bit. Steady stream of customers, most internet transfers, but one in store sale while I was there. Very little ammo and minimal stock in the store. Only one guy gave attitude about putting on a mask, and he wasn’t a buyer anyway.

Now to look at the pool parts and see what I’ll have to fix.

Mask kabuki shouldn’t become the norm. The security kabuki at the airport post-9/11 is bad enough, and, despite being proven ineffective, the gropefest is now accepted as normal.

  16. Nick Flandrey says:

I bet they have 200 people a day on the other side of the counter from them… NO WAY would I do that without requiring masks on customers.

Jenny, YUM! I love chowders, and that sounds spectacular. And it is fresh corn season right now… I could grate it off the cob right into the pot…. yum!! Paul has to have low carb but I don’t 😀 The tuna salad option sounds really good too. Thank you for all the great ideas. Canned fish I am used to but smoked is a whole nuther animal. I love salmon crocquets, maybe I could make some of those with it too.

Dad did a lot of fishing. He took it to the cannery. I don’t know how many cases of salmon we moved from Oregon to Hawaii to California to Mobile…. but we still had 20 cans when we moved to Texas.

@paul, HaHa! Ok that explains something: friends of ours originally from Alaska moved out of the country for a while so they got rid of everything. She brought me her pantry things that she didn’t think the Food Bank would appreciate… like Modena balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, various other condiments… and several cans of salmon labeled as caught by their family. I didn’t realize that custom canning was available in those locales, very cool idea. I guess it is the same thing as the Deer Processors here in Texas, there is an independent in every tiny town.

Re masks: it doesn’t bother me to wear one – I’d rather wear a mask than a seat belt and I never neglect the seat belt. Businesses require closed toe shoes and other safety equipment, why not masks too? Women look younger when we wear them – in some cases, a LOT younger. And so far, I’ve recognized every person I’ve seen in their mask, so no one can hide. My friend made us each 2 masks with filters in them that are supposed to even filter viruses out of the air, then the other day she brought me 3 more, so together with my bandanas, I’ve got quite the wardrobe of fashion PPE!

That is one of the reasons I drive a 4×4 truck now, it will go right across a median. I tried very hard to get my son to buy one also instead of his very nice Toyota Camry. He lives in the war zone (between 610 and beltway 8).

The cops will start shooting very soon.

Tell them it’s all part and parcel of living in a big city. Or that they had the chance to leave ten years ago or ten weeks ago and didn’t take it, so now they should be adults and live with their decisions.

Snark aside, yah, that’s a tough one. I’m guessing that if only now they realize that they live in a third-world shithole, they don’t have go-bags and a full tank of gas. More importantly, they don’t have the mindset to say, “forget about the TV and the rest of the stuff, get in the car and get out of town now“.

If my kin were in a similar situation* and weren’t able to defend themselves from an approaching mob (and, living in or near Chicago, I’m guessing they don’t have a safe full of guns and ammo) I’d advise them to load up the car with clothes and portable valuables and get out of town ASAP. Spend a couple nights in a hotel 50 miles away, until things settle down or it’s obvious they aren’t going to settle down any time soon.

And be prepared to be ignored. “I think it’ll be ok. I’ll know when to leave if it gets worse.”

    * In point of fact, my elder son lives in St Paul. He’s “watching the news” but he’s not worried because the riots and fires are seven miles away. I’ll try again in the morning to get him to at least load up his car and be ready to drive east on one minute’s notice.

A 50+% drop in GDP ??? Are you kidding me ?

No wonder I cannot sell my old house. We are so screwed.

And so is Trump. I was figuring a 20% drop in the GDP which I think he could survive. But not 50%.

Shoot, the old folks are going to ditch Trump for killing off the MLB. The young folks are going to ditch Trump for killing off the NBA. And the middle aged folks are getting laid off now.
