Mon. Nov. 20, 2023 -11202023 – maybe I’ll get more done today

Mid 60s and windy with some cloud cover and maybe sprinkles of rain today. Describes yesterday pretty well too. Rain was barely noticeable though.

Spent the day on the garage man door replacement. Door went in ok, but the opening and jamb ended up needing a bunch of adjustment. Dang thing was BUILT as a trapezoid. Trying to make the corrections without tearing it all out took a bit longer. Then the locksmithing took a bunch of time. I ended up re-keying 3 cylinders, one dead bolt, one new handle for the garage entry, and then one new handle for the house entry door. Made them all match the same key. Of course there is more to it.

I didn’t have keys for a couple of the cylinders, so I had to make a bump key to open them. It’s easier than disassembling the whole thing. Had to make another when the first attempt didn’t work. Then I dropped one cylinder and had to re-load it, and get it all back together. They’re in, the jamb is square, the door fits well, and I can reinstall the trim and move to the next job today. REALLY didn’t think it was going to take that much time.

I did start the day playing a game with D2 and W1. And played another at lunch time. Then had venison and brisket burgers for dinner, and played LoTR Monopoly after. First time I’ve ever played Monopoly and had one player bankrupt everyone and win with every single property (save one that no one landed on.) D2 had a heck of a lucky day, winning every game we played except the very last card game. FWIW, the LoTR version of Monopoly is much better than original Monopoly, IMHO. Nice metal game pieces, a nice replica ring, and some tweaks to the rules that make the game much shorter to play, typically.

Today I will either do the dockhouse door, or the posts. Given my experiences with the door to the garage, I might do the posts as something I can walk away from without finishing if time runs out. Doors really need to be installed and working before you leave a property for a couple of weeks. Nothing is ever easy or quick, but even applying that rule the door in the garage caught me off guard.

I’ve improved function and security by replacing the door. I added a few pounds of venison to the freezer, and introduced the kids to delicious deer meat. And I played a bunch of games with the family. Good weekend in my book…

Keep stacking, but find your joy where you can.

Sun. Nov. 19, 2023 – maybe today…

Cool and damp, but hopefully another clear day. Yesterday started cool, but got unpleasantly hot in the sun by later afternoon. It was still cool in the shade, but I was sweating when the sun shone…

I had planned to do some carpentry, and replace some support posts for the porch of the dockhouse. Instead we went to the local small town USA Christmas Festival. And it was exactly what I hoped and better than expected. It’s the kind of thing my family would go to all over southern Illinois and Indiana back in the day.

Close the streets around the town square and courthouse, have some vendors selling homemade stuff, and trinkets, and have food vendors-lots of food vendors with different meats on a stick, and of course funnel cakes. Mix in a small stage with a band or guitar player, and a bunch of local churches and charities doing stuff to raise money and you have small town USA celebrating.

In this case, there were several different biker groups raising money, one was cops, one was witnessing for Jesus, never figured out what the other was doing. County Sheriff was raising money for new radios, Search and Rescue was there, along with the local ham club, and all the churches and charities. I lost track of the number of gun raffles after 12. Very popular fundraiser apparently. I have a half dozen tickets… no one called yet.

The vendors were mostly local people doing some sort of craft as a side hustle or retirement project. Lots of little crocheted stuffed animals. Lots of artisanal soaps. Several woodworkers with cutting boards, or laser etched signs. One guy with a bunch of CNC’d plaques with various subjects. Hand made jewelry. Supposedly hand made knives. One guy with rocket stoves, which were very well made, and a sturdy design. Lots of food.

One interesting thing was a couple of guys with 3d printed objects for sale. They’re local and doing it as a business. They’ve got a couple of lasers too. Resolution of filament printers has gotten so good the little toys and knickknacks looked traditionally manufactured. D2 bought an articulated dragon about 18″ long that was printed in one run. Really neat, like a spiky plastic snake.

We spent a few hours walking around. Meatspace baby. It was an interesting crowd too. Mostly white, but normal proportions of blacks and hispanics. A couple of asians, and surprisingly two different food vendors from the subcontinent. Lots of older folks, but a large number of young couples and families too. Wiry young men with wives that made me think “modern homesteading”. BIG men with BIG wives that made me think “skilled trades” for the men, loudmouth trailer trash for the women. One stick figure woman with meth sores on her face and some bedraggled kids. Mostly people looked happy, and healthy.

No Biden supporters visible, but one or more vendors selling Trump merch, and other MAGA stuff, like FJB hats.

All in all, a nice afternoon.

Then it was home to work, but since it was late I decided to work on replacing the man door in the garage. Got that 90% done, shot some pool with the wife and kid, then we played cards for a couple of hours. It was pretty late but my fishing buddy called and he came by with his wife to give us some deer meat. He got a buck and doe last week. It’s a half dozen meals worth, and I’m looking forward to eating it.

The result of all that was an early night without the fire I’d laid in the pit, or a tiny little fire.

Today I’ll get the posts replaced and maybe the door of the dockhouse too. And finish unloading and putting away the stuff I brought up this time and last.

Always be working to improve you situation. And stacking, that has to continue too.

Sat. Nov. 18, 2023 – a fine day to do some work…

Cool and clear. Like yesterday. After all the predictions, it ended up clear with a blue sky. Hopefully today will be the same and I can get a bunch of work done.

Did my running around yesterday. Picked up a kayak. Strapped it to the roof rack. It kinda cuts through the air, and it’s kinda like a brick being pushed at 70mph… My Ranger can’t quite find a gear at the speed limit with the brick on top. So I could drive 10 under, or 10 over. I chose over. Well, until I got on the dark country roads. Then I was happy to go slower.

Given that it is a DWI enforcement weekend there were a surprising number of idiots driving VERY fast. And more than usual pulled over. The cops have something new, a white light bar on the front to light up the scene, and it’s FRICKEN bright. In fact I found a lot of bright lights shining in my eyes making it hard to drive. I can’t be the only one that thinks super bright LED parking lot lights shouldn’t be pointed at the freeway. And yet.

Today I’ll unload the truck, and maybe do some carpentry. There are some support posts that need to be replaced under the patio roof. I’ve had everything I think I need in place and ready to go, just lacked the time to start a project that has to be finished before I can move on. We’ll see how it goes. And if not, there is a long list.

Always be working…

and stacking.

Fri. Nov. 17, 2023 – getting ready to head out…

Cool and overcast again, some possibility of rain. It was misty in several places as I drove around Thursday. No real rain though. I don’t think it ever got hotter than about 64F either. Pretty depressing and dreary overall. And today should be the same, joy.

Did my pickups in 3 of the 4 corners of Houston. Lots of driving. Almost all of it for resale, although a couple of items might end up in my stacks. Received some packages that I was waiting for too. Mostly it’s stuff to fix stuff for resale or my use. I like fixing stuff, but the endless list can be oppressive.

Plan for today is try for a minor dropoff, try to take some stuff to my secondary, do one pickup, and load for the trip to the BOL for the weekend. I scored another kayak, only $73, so I’ll be strapping that to the top of the other stuff on the truck… which will mostly be patio furniture, but may also include a loveseat. I should be a right proper Fred Sanford, or Jed Clampitt when I’m fully loaded up. Hope I can find enough straps.

I’ll be on the end of a thin pipe for a few days so if stuff is happening, go ahead and link…

I’ve got a list of stuff I’d like to get done this weekend. We’ll see what the universe has in mind. I’m hoping to get at least some of it done but I never can predict…

I should hit Lowes for some stuff before I head up too. I’ve got what I need for the main project, but maybe not for a couple of secondary options. And my wife needs some 1/4 round for her flooring project. A right Fred Sanford…

Always be working to improve your situation. Always be learning and trying new things. Keep meeting new people. And stack like your life depends on it.

Thur. Nov. 16, 2023 – and now we’re half way thru November. Yikes.

Cool and clear, maybe even sunny and warming later. Yesterday turned out quite nice. Sun stayed out, and it warmed up, but not so much that you started sweating. Having today the same would be great. Also great if I could enjoy it, instead of just moving through it.

Did a bunch of stuff yesterday, only some of it actually on my list. Laundry, dishes, vacuuming, meeting with the tiger mom who is buying our piano, picking up the place–domestic bliss in other words. Then I did an auction pickup, went by the car repair and tried to get my Expy in for service. Nope, missed my chance, too busy. I guess I could try another place, but in my mind this guy has replaced my long time service place that shut down. Unfortunately he’s short staffed, which makes everything harder. Lotta that going around btw.

Went to a school thing later, a banquet for student athletes. BBQ was pretty good. More white coaches than there were white students in the room… My 5′ 8″ blondie gets a lot of attention from the short and dark student body. I’m getting the impression they think she’s “exotic” but not “wife material”. That’s fine with me. We’ve been invaded. It will only get worse from here.

I spent some time talking with my cleaning lady. She’s legal, but an immigrant. She told me that all her customers think really bad times are coming and they are getting ready. She is too. We’ve talked before about vac sealing and freezing meat, and she’s not dumb, she sees the stacks. She asked me what I thought, so I told her. Violence. Shortages. Upheaval. Massive inflation. Economic collapse. (something that is FAR from unthinkable for anyone from south of the border, btw. It’s the normal state of affairs they’ve lived with their whole lives. They have no reluctance to consider it as a possibility.) She said she is trying to sell one of her trucks, the one she considers a “personal” vehicle. “It’s just sitting there, not earning anything.” And she is thinking about taking her money and going back to Mexico, to one of the American expat communities. If she does, it will likely work out better for her than the expats, when the S hits the Fan. It’s easier to be poor in your home town, near family and friends.

Without considering any moral arguments, think about that.

And make plans. Because some of the invaders will be STRONGLY incentivized to stay, even if some do leave. Native born citizens are sorting themselves geographically, and a reverse dust bowl pattern is already emerging. I’ve talked to and seen other people who are moving back to family and familiar places. S is getting real, yo… (to use a meme.)

Who you are with, and where you are, is likely to make a huge difference in your life for the next 2, 5, or 10 years.

And what you’ve stacked, of course.

Wed. Nov. 15, 2023 – long list today. Short time to do it.

Cool and wet, damp at a minimum, raining as a maximum. Forecast shows clear for a couple of days, fwiw. Temps are nice for shirtsleeves. A bit warm in the sun, a bit cool in the shade. Without any rain, it’s really nice.

Did a pickup, and drop off. Got a gas can (old and metal) and some misc stuff including for my non-prepping hobby. Dropped off a few bins for my local auction and got a commitment to take more next week. They’ve seen income decrease enough that they’ve cut employee hours. I’m doing my part to keep the per lot average up. Boss man is still sick, not heart this time, but hernia repair. He’s getting stuff fixed all in a row. I’m a fan, as you have witnessed.

Get stuff fixed now. Both for your body, and soul, and the environment around you. I’ve got a TON of stuff that needs a part, or 10 minutes of work, (or a lot of work) and I’m not keeping up. This is a time to get ducks in a row. Get your shooting irons out, do a function check at the range. Check your zero. Make sure your food isn’t compromised in some way. Check your medical preps. The adhesive failing on bandages is my most common problem. Re-stock PPEs for the next contagion they loose on us. Look in the corners and find the stuff you “temporarily” put somewhere other than where it belongs. Put it right.

And stack what you are missing.

Tues. Nov. 14, 2023 – touch-typing is amazing if you think about it…

Cold and wet, warming to cool and wet, while remaining overcast. Whew. Think that’s the most complex guess I’ve made to date. Feels like it anyway, and it describes Monday. The forecast says “partly cloudy” with no mention of rain, so I could be wrong.

Did my pickup yesterday. Got there, and the other customer was complaining about not winning my lot. So I sold it to him. Quick flip, only $20, but hey, money in pocket vs. money in the abstract, and for no more work than figuring out how to make zelle work. Now I know that too…

Picked up the kid, did some domestic bliss, did some auction sorting. Tested a couple of things.

Today if it’s not raining, I’ll probably drop some stuff off at the auction. I’ll also do some pickups and maybe even drop some stuff at my secondary location. If I’m super ambitious, I’ll do all that before the kid needs a ride home. And I can end with taking the Expy in for service. Didn’t yesterday because of the school board drama and my wife wanting to attend that in person. Liars that lie.

————–

There are daily stories about the breakdown in civil society. One punch killings. Mobs attacking singles. Kids killing each other and adults. Adults murdering their kids. Armed robberies and carjackings are dramatically up. Property theft is so common it doesn’t even merit a report in some places. Other crimes by people better placed to profit from them are exposed daily, to almost zero outrage. Politicians betray their trust. The law is twisted to punish the guilty.

Some of these things have been with us since the dawn of time, and only vary in degree, and by time and place. Some are relatively new to the public sphere. Some were common, but not widely known here in the US. It all is increasing, it all points to a coming inflection point.

Two things are likely. One is that it continues to get worse, the people just accommodating themselves to the ‘new normal’ like frogs as the water boils. (That’s been happening btw, for a while.) Eventually though the frog jumps or dies. The other is that people get angry and determine that they will change the direction the body politic is headed. This is historically very violent and relatively short. The people that built western civilization are (because they are civilized) slow to anger. But once aroused they will vent their anger and KEEP venting it, long after the subject has been subdued. The result is ruined cities, scattered people, and salted earth.

We’ve been in scenario one for decades. The frog is starting to feel hot though, and is about to jump out of the water, splashing hot water everywhere, knocking over the pan, and generally throwing a big fit. Whether the fit is soon enough for the frog to survive, or not, is a bit irrelevant to the frog. The frog who jumps wants to destroy the pot, the water, the one who lit the stove, the stove, the gas that powers the stove, and anyone who approved of the frog boiling policy, so that it doesn’t happen again. Frogs are typically very motivated by hearth and home, kith and kin.

This time the frogs don’t have as much kin, many without direct descendants to protect or provide for. There is a much weaker bond to hearth and home too. I am not comfortable making any predictions other than that things WILL change. They will either bring the water to a boil more quickly and the frog will have missed its chance, or the frog will have his day of reckoning. At the moment I’m leaning toward the violent spasm. Don’t know if it will end in an improvement or not.

When I get anxious, I clean. I prep. I surround myself with stuff. It’s stacked pretty high… but it’s not all neatly put away, yet.

Stack.

Mon. Nov. 13, 2023 – Friday the 13th comes on a Monday this month…

Cold and wet. Rain in the forecast for Houston, heavy rain in fact. I guess we’ll see. It was mostly high 50s, low 60s in Houston and at the BOL. I got some heavy mist, light misty drizzle a couple of times in the afternoon, and drove through some drizzle on the way home in the evening. It seemed light, and pretty localized, just like Saturday.

Did my run to the BOL on Saturday and did most of the unloading and stacking on Sunday. Also did the normal per visit upkeep and care of the house and property. I did skimp a bit on mowing as the hilly back yard was too wet to do safely. I did walk it and treat the fire ant mounds. You have to stay on top of them or they’ll take over.

I headed home after dark, listening to the third and final disc of the OO7 audiobook. It must be an early one in the canon, as James is a pretty ordinary, albeit skilled and focused, guy. The story isn’t full of iconic Bond stuff either. I was never a Bond fan, although I’ve seen most of the early movies, and none of the later ones, but I enjoyed the short story. It fit on three CDs, when the Jim Butcher novels take 8 or 9, or sometimes more. Never thought I’d like any sort of audiobook, but I do enjoy them in the truck while driving around. Sometimes an old dog learns a new trick.

Today should be indoor stuff, maybe ebay and auction stuff. Maybe not. I do have to leave the house to do pickups and return the rental trailer. I hope it isn’t raining dogs and cats.

Of course, if it is raining, the smart and prepared will be collecting the rainwater for the garden or for emergency drinking…

Stack it up.

Sun. Nov. 12, 2023 – at the BOL, for a while at least…

Cool, bordering on cold. Hopefully not any rain, but it is forecast for some. It was 57F at midnight and damp.

Had my non-prepping hobby meeting on Sat. Sold the stuff I wanted to sell. Got volunteered for the Christmas party committee. Not much work and it’s a fun day. Meatspace.

Today I’ll finish unloading and putting away. Then if the weather holds, and the ground isn’t too wet, I’ll mow, treat for fire ants, and head home. The freeway is supposed to be closed all day so I’ll get to try an alternate route. Joy.

Still, it’s good practice.

I’ll be stacking the things I brought up. Stack something of your own.

Sat. Nov. 11, 2023 – 111123 – non-prepping hobby day, then BOL

Cool and wet again. Hopefully not actual rain, but it is possible. It did stop raining for a short while yesterday. I took the Expy for my pickup anyway as I didn’t want to rearrange the pickup in the rain. Good thing, as the rain started back up.

So I did get the pickup done, but barely. Expy is full… and then I needed to unload some at the secondary on my way home to get D1 from school. Except that there was a massive traffic delay. Took me 2 1/2 hours to get 15 miles, and that is with my aggression turned to 11. Had to skip dropping off at my secondary in order to not leave the kid too long past due. Still picked her up almost 2 hours late. By that point I was WOUND UP.

Got pizza and calmed down. Did some auction sorting to make up for my slackitude. Spent some time working on pipes and watching youtube videos. They are going through some really aggressive attempts to monetize the audience. Listening to music in the car was maddening. Ads in between every song. Music paused when another app took focus, with a super smarmy message popup… “Do you want your music to keep playing when the app is in the background? Just buy a subscription!” They are making the user experience miserable to sell the subs.

Oddly when I watched last night, I didn’t get the “Oh you’re using an ad blocker, that’s not allowed” message. Guess some lawyers got involved. Louis Rossmann had some things to say about it on his channel. They might have been in violation of EU rules about running code on users’ machines without getting permission first. And in the US, I’m pretty sure the rePlay TV case determined that you can’t FORCE people to watch commercials.

Getting a pi-hole set up is moved up the priority list too.

So many things on that list.

Non-prepping hobby meeting today, with our quarterly swapfest too. I’ve got some things to sell, so I don’t want to miss it. Then it is ‘load the truck and head out’ time. In fact it’s ‘load the truck and trailer.’ I’ve got enough stuff for this trip I’ve rented a small trailer too. It’s much cheaper than gas for a second trip, and takes less time. I just need it to not be raining… I can still get most of it, but not all, if it’s raining.

Lotta preps involved, lotta stacking. Time to get busy.

Stack some yourself.
