Ok, now I’ve got about an hour pause.

Second child is practicing piano. She likes it, and cries when she can’t practice. First child would watch our required minimum practice time with a stopwatch, and avoid it if possible. Kids are little people, and will remind you of that occasionally.

Interesting what fell out of the news this week.
    – gay Democratic fundraiser, has killed TWO black prostitutes IN HIS OWN HOME and is still walking around free.
-yellow vest protest still going strong in France, and has spread to an unknown degree (unknown to us here anyway)
-latino D’s partying in Puerto Rico while TSA shlubs go hungry. (there are very few .gov workers at a federal level who get paid less that what you might expect. TSA screener is one of them. Leaving aside the efficacy or need for the Feds to conduct the screening, those guys are essentially minimum wage security guards and really DON’T have any money.)

What else fell out of the news cycle?

If you are in the affected areas, I hope you are well stocked. If you are, please share any stories from the storm….

Emotional support alligator. Coming soon to your next Southwest flight. “Just like a dog.”

There is a certain personality type attracted to that kind of work. Unfortunately, it is the type of personality you *don’t* want actually doing the job.

The boot fetishist I saw working the screening at DFW once would probably do the gig for free.

Look at the pictures. This is going to end badly.

March for Life, annual anti-abortion march on DC – very hard to find coverage with pictures. Best pix I’ve found are from twitter users on the ground in DC.

MSM coverage says ‘thousands’ which doesn’t quite catch the size, and finds ways to dump on Trump for addressing the crowd.

Again, the airline, boarding agent, and flight crew have final say about *any* animal getting onboard the aircraft, especially one which will be loose in the cabin and not in a carrier. DO NOT let the airline pass the buck and blame the ADA law or an obscure FAA regulation.

I have serious dog allergies, and I’ve checked with people in the know about this situation.

A pet alligator? The man is nuts. It it’s wandering around on a plane I’m on, I’m getting off and will get my ticket refunded.

Nice looking day today. About 50F. “Windy” is an understatement.

I have a pot of chili simmering. One and a quarter pound of stew meat from HEB at $4.75 a pound. It’s the recipe on the Gebhardt’s chili powder. Tweaked a bit. I use dried onion and garlic powder instead of fresh.
Brown the meat. Salt and pepper as you like.
One can of tomato sauce, one can of tomato paste, a 14oz and a 28oz can of tomatoes. Petite, regular, whole, it varies. I rinse the cans with a cup of so of water and into the pot. Sometimes a scant teaspoon of sugar to smooth the tomato paste bite.
Taste, adjust salt. Let it warm a bit and taste again. And then add the chili powder, cumin, etc. along with a bit of cayenne.
Plus a tablespoon of cocoa. <— secret ingredient.

Next project is a batch of cornbread.

One more thing. My phone is constantly updating stuff. Even stuff I don’t use.

According to my phone, Google Play Store has used almost 600 Mb of my data plan this month. What the heck it is exactly, I don’t know.

So I poked through my apps and set everything to “update on wi-fi”. This morning? Guess what updated over night? It’s either “special” and ignores my settings or it turned on the wi-fi to update.

    It’s now disabled.

It’s not the data usage that bothers me. Straight Talk give me a useless 10GB a month. It’s the updating every other day that bothers me. Useless 10GB a month? I can’t tether and I’m not interested in watching TV on my phone.

You can turn try turning on “Data Saver” (under “Data Usage” in the Settings) and removing the Play Services permission to transfer in the background.

As I’ve noted here before, a mostly corporate-free smart phone experience is available with fairly current hardware, but it leaves much to be desired.

As a compromise, some mainstream manufacturers are better than others with regard to cr*pware on the phone which consumes data and cannot be removed. My stock Moto E4 “only” consumes 1.5 GB/mo. sitting in my backpack as an 24/7 available backup, checking mail once every hour. I’m sure if I had a newer phone with unremovable “services” like Facecrack or Alexa, the data usage would be much higher.

Between my wife and I, both iPhones, we consume about 0.5 gig a month. And only pay $17.34 with tax for both phones.

    Details?!

  14. Nick Flandrey says:

Well I didn’t win the chili cookoff. Our normal winner won. Two new guys with strong entries took 2nd and 3rd.

7 entries, and all were good.

Bitterly cold damp wind though, made the campfire mandatory… unfortunately the fire ring is WAY far away from the pavilion where we were eating. My feet got cold thru the soles of my shoes. We lit the fire with a lighter and fire starting stick from my wife’s get home bag, so that was nice. Didn’t have my truck, so I was really missing my extra clothes, blanket, and yoga mats for the kids to sit on while they watched their movie. I didn’t think to bring the Mr Buddy heater; I was too busy getting the chili, cornbread, and cobbler ready to go.

Fun night though, and good to see folks at the pool, in the dead of winter.

Xfinity wireless. If you have xfinity internet you can have up to five phones on the account. You only pay for data at $12.00 per gigabyte. Data is shared among all the devices. You can also get unlimited, by device, for $45.00 a month. The service uses The Verizon network and towers. If you use less than 100 megabytes in the month there is no charge.

As Paul Harvey used to say: Here’s the rest of the story.

What the video doesn’t show is the prior “interactions” between the idiot 16-tear-olds (and they ARE acting like idiots, as 16-year-old males are wont to do) and a group of ‘teens’ .

Select the video labeled “Scott Adams talks about the new border offer and the Awesome Native American dude.” Adams’s comments begin 46 seconds in.

Somebody buys the cr*p, just like the stupidity being foisted upon us by the car manufacturers.

The next TV standard will be two way, feeding information back to the broadcasters without any end user control, and, next time, Congress will not mandate adapter boxes for the legacy hardware.

GoreTex is your friend, but the footwear is pricey.

Cabelas carries an Irish Setter shoe with GoreTex which is okay, but not great. If you buy a pair, plan on replacing the shoelaces within six months. And the shoes look awful in a year, but they will keep doing the job.

  21. JimB says:

    Xfinity wireless.

Thanks, Ray. Of course, I would have to have access to cable. Nothing in the ground here to bundle with.

As Nick says, I have it on my to-do list to look into alternative cell phone plans, so that was on my mind.

My best hope for Internet is still one of the LEO satellite systems, Airborne Wireless, or PTP wireless.

Doesn’t Xfinity Wireless require an Internet subscription at home?
