Fri. Jan. 4, 2019 – appointments today, and kids at home

By on January 4th, 2019 in Random Stuff

36F and wet out. That feels pretty dang cold BTW.

Up early because it is family dentist day, YEA! Or not. We’re all in pretty good shape so there shouldn’t be any uncomfortable surprises, nor expensive ones, but I’ll touch wood just in case.

Making sure your health care is up to date is an important prep. Don’t let things fester. Literally.

I guess we’ve got a couple of days to see what the world and markets do now that we’ve put Nancy and a bunch of haters in the House. Anyone think we’ll get a new Camelot? No? Didn’t think so. Pity that time travel doesn’t exist. Imagine a world where Teddy died in a ditch alongside Mary Jo. No change in immigration policy from europeans to third worlders for one. That would have a HUGE impact. Now take out Bill Ayers and eliminate that long game. Those two edits alone might have been enough to save what we had. Maybe interfere with Woodward and Bernstein just enough to prevent the toxic erosion of faith in government, and creating the idea that the activist was the highest form of journalism….

You see Johnny, one person CAN make a difference.

36º and sunny, with a high of 46 predicted. Looks to be a good day.

Hypothetical: Could you go back in time and shoot Hitler in the head, as a youth? How about Churchill? Mussolini? Grant? Lee?

Nobody knows what would have happened had Teddy not had a few too many drinks that night or had he died as well. Somebody would have proposed ending the immigration ban. Teddy just happened to be the one that brought it up.

  2. Harold Combs says:

44f, overcast, and a wet day ahead.
I enjoy a good alt-history novel too but suspect that any meddling might turn out for the worse.
I have recently run across something called the “Mandela Effect”. A term used to explain mostly faulty memory, but some of the things they show aren’t true, I WOULD SWEAR used to have been true. Now I know for a fact that Nelson Mandela did not die in prison in the late 80s because I was on a plane with him from NYC to DC in 1994. Has anyone else heard about this so-called “phenomenon”?

The first Kennedy immigration deal was done in … ’67 (?). Teddy drowning at Chappaquiddick may have affected the next scheduled amnesty which happened in the mid-80s, but Kennedy was not as much of a factor in pushing the mid 2000s bill compared to the impact of RINOs such as Congressman “Opie” in FL and Lindsey Graham.

Teddy not liquored up that night might have meant another Kennedy Presidency in ’76 with Reagan booting him out of office in ’80. No Carter Presidency.

Yup, and Teddy deserved to die with Mary Jo even if Immigration still changed.

The wife visited her doctor yesterday because of sudden swelling and other symptoms. The doctor called this morning telling her to check into hospital ASAP as his tests show her kidneys are failing. So I am off to drive her to hospital again. She has been fighting diabetes for over 25 years now and it looks to be winning.

@Harold C, praying for the best for your wife and comfort and hope for you and your family.

I have been living with Type II Diabetes for more than 30 years, the maternal side of my family has a history of Type II Diabetes going back 3 generations and its complications have been not been conducive to long life. The “treatments/medications” play havoc with the liver and kidneys. You would think that by now better treatments and medications would have been developed, but the fact is that Big Pharma does not seem to be inclined to do better and medical coverage (particularly by Medi-don’t-care and Medicaid-not) is a continuous hassle compounded by doctors that are really not up to speed.

It also complicates things that complying with regimes to live with Diabetes is hard. Not to make excuses, but living with Diabetes is not fun or easy.

I’ll get off my soapbox and end with more prayers for hope and comfort for all.

What a lovely example of the religion of peace, islam.

Meanwhile, the middle east, the birthplace of Christianity, is burning and the number of Christians martyrs over the last few years is in the hundreds of thousands. The numbers of Christians living in the middle east has steadily declined due to them fleeing in any direction.

One of my resolutions for this year is to transition off Gmail, Yahoo, and the rest. It’s going to be a hassle after all these years.

I seem to recall some discussions about alternate email providers on this site last year, and wondered if anyone had made the move.

I’m not plotting to overthrow the government, just tired of the creepy electronic stalking.

My non-Gmail personal mail account is a paid att.net address, legacy AT&T WorldNet.

At this point, it is rebranded paid Yahoo mail, but the paid account is not mined for advertising. I use the account for personal business, job searches, and anything else I don’t want Google to know about.

I’m not overly neurotic about privacy. My big concerns with Gmail are:

    1. I think the black swan which will end “The Cloud” migration is a huge security breach. My money is on everyone’s Gmail going online with a nice index for keyword searches.

    2. Google still views Gmail as an experimental service which means it is subject to end at any time.

When Google Chat shut down, I saw an article from one of the pundits, maybe Dvorak, speculating about the questionable permanence of all Google services, including Gmail.

Granted, Gmail would be very difficult to shut down at this point, but I know a lot of groups with zero budget or security restrictions against messaging service who depended on Chat, including the infrastructure group I worked with at the university.

Regardless, keep in mind the true cost of the service when the monetary price is zero.

And I still believe that Gmail will be the subject of the black swan event that ends the cloud fascination by git IT departments. Even a partial breach would be devastating to the entire *AAS industry.

Oregon law permits public nudity in certain contexts. Political protest is probably one of those. The city certainly does not lack for strip clubs … or homeless stripping down to bathe in the fountains.

Recent case law is this situation from a few years ago:

I completely forgot about the naked bike ride. The entire Nortwest experience is the one time in life I wish a “do over” was possible.

Also, love the nice purse… reminds me of a song lyric, “rich punk rocker, silver spoon and a paper plate.” Also, LOVE how these femen and the other female protesters can’t wait to get naked to “show you”. Yeah, I know. I keep on waiting for Google to say that we have to pay $5/month/email address any day now. Yes, I am cheap XXXX frugal.

Not GMail (Google has been burned a LOT and is careful) but, one of the social services (Facecrack, etc) will have a black swan someday.`

DreamHost. I have the Crazy Domain Insane plan. $120 a year. Unlimited discussion groups, announce lists, and e-mail addresses. It just works.

You could change your mx records to your-domain.com to mail.your-domain.com.

For my business email, I have five addresses with my domain host, godaddy. There isn’t a lot of storage, and I use the webmail exclusively. It forwards to my gmail, which gets it to my phone. That was easier than setting up something else.

Since I have personal domains registered, but nothing built for them yet, I haven’t set up any emails on those domains. I’ve even got “flandreyFamily.com” if that was the name my family shares…..

I might set that up soon. I’ll just add it to the list.

I have a dedicated server that I could change my MX record back to in a heartbeat at https://www.pair.com/ . But, we get joe-jobbed DAILY. Gmail blocks all of that nonsense for us using the old Postini software. In fact, I was getting ready to pay Postini to filter our email when Google bought them.

You have never lived until you get 10,000+ email bounces back to your server using my office administrators email address. My office administrator started crying around 4,000 bouncebacks and went home at 5,000. I telneted up to our server and started deleting the emails directly out of the email queue using vi. Took me hours but we only had a T1 (or maybe it was an ISDN ?) at the time and it was saturated when the emails came down.

About 10 a day out of my daily 200+ emails are spam. All XXX most of those go into my spam folder at gmail.

Before Gmail, my email was running 50/50 spam/good email. And that was on a good day. I had an intricate Procmail script (several thousand lines of rules) but it did not work very well.

  41. paul says:

I use POP on the PCs and IMAP on phones and Kindles.

Phones and Kindles are for reading mail. Perhaps deleting the fluff.

POP is to download, sort, save and then delete from server. Because I store saved mail on my PC and not “in the cloud”. So far, so good, I have mail back to May 1996.

Now, I do go into the webmail interface once in a while to delete mail saved on my PC. I don’t really need to, messages time out after 60 days or so.

And not just any grass. They don’t eat St. Augustine. Then again, neither did the cows or donkey. They don’t eat the whatever grass, Bermuda?. Crab? I don’t know what it is.

They snack on the native grass.

I could Google but….. I expect it to find a pile of stuff similar to “Orange Man BAD!!!” complete with stomping feet.

Try that sh!t in India for example, where they’re raping babies because they have their skirts up while pissing in a field. Try it in any of the muslime countries, even the ones outside of the middle east. Try it in the Philippines, Malaysia, indonesia, Thailand, or anywhere in Africa.
