George H. W. Bush Dead at the Age of 94

Now the news stations will be showing all the footage they have archived over the years. The only news that will be shown will be GWB. News outlets will be in a frenzy to outdo the competition while slighting other newsworthy events.

And in other news. Got the new broadcast equipment installed and will be going live tomorrow. Things did not work out as planned and required some additional effort.

JVC did not tell the supplier that connecting the multi-core back to the camera disabled the HDMI output to the camera monitor. Thus the only way to get a view to the operators was to pass the SDI signal through the monitor. There is apparently some impedance mismatch which made the signal unusable in the studio. JVC also did not inform that the multi-core back would provide power to the camera but not to the monitor.

Thus the camera controllers and multi-core back were abandoned. This eliminated the tally signal to the camera and the operators would not have an indication they were live. This required a new signal cable to be run to each camera. We also had to find a way to get power to the camera and the monitor. We would have required power to the monitor so adding an additional power pack was not a big deal.

I am significantly disappointed in JVC. They put together the configuration and assured us multiple times it would work. When we called tech support they said the monitors would work. Tech support had to escalate. But buried in small paragraph, page 124 of a 300 page manual it is stated the HDMI output to the monitor is disabled when using the multi-core back. JVC also said in the initial proposal that the monitors could be powered from the camera and that turned out to not be true.

I am returning the camera controllers and the multi-core backs. JVC wants to charge a restocking fee that would be a couple thousand dollars. I am pushing back hard. I have documentation that JVC said the configuration would work and my position is that JVC provided a product that did not work as stated and thus should not have a restocking fee.

I still have one signal conversion issue. We use an auxiliary buss on the switcher to send a signal to the screens in the sanctuary. That signal originally was SD-ANALOG. Coming out of the switcher is HD-SDI. I only had a box to convert from SDI to analog but is still HD. I have found out the switching device (switch between computer, broadcast and DVD) will not support HD even though the box can output HD. The input used will not support HD. Thus I need to install a downcoverter box to bring the HD-SDI signal to SD-SDI and then convert the SDI to ANALOG.

I have also run a network cable from the studio to the sanctuary. All the equipment is networked, private network with no external connections, and can all be controller from software on a computer. Every device, even the displays, have an IP address and can be remotely accessed. This will allow me to control everything from the sanctuary which will be useful for testing.

The upside to having to return the camera controllers and multi-core backs is that it will release significant funds. This will be enough to replace the current projectors (two of them) in the sanctuary with HD laser projectors. Should be enough money for the projectors and new 16×9 screens.

This entire process has taken longer than I hoped, more resources (people time), more frustration than I had hoped. Some of the frustration is that I am ignorant as a rock on some of this stuff and have to rely on others. JVC sales staff apparently are not well versed in their equipment nor is first level support.

@ray, I feel your pain. That is exactly the sort of thing that would get me on my projects. It got so bad, I insisted we ‘stage’ every system, IN FULL, in the factory before shipping. I wanted every single thing in the signal and control paths out of the boxes and actually connected. That is the only way to catch all the gotchas that are inevitable with large systems. When the guys got lazy and skipped “obvious” things is when I got stuck on site. “Gee guys, you didn’t REALLY hang the projectors in their enclosures did you?””No, there just bolts, how could they not fit.” “well, the bolts you sent are bigger than the holes in the steel you nitwit….”

Glad you got it working. You should NOT have to pay if their solution didn’t work. They should be sending you free stuff too.

The news outlets have probably maintained a GHWB “package” over the last few year in anticipation of his passing. They do that for all the major public figures.

When Michael Cimino died, not many outlets had footage covering him beyond what they maintained in their Clint Eastwood package, with Cimino discussing the impact of his mentor on Hollywood.

I have no doubt that Eastwood will outlive many of the interviewees in his obit reels.

“If President Trump is truly independent of Russia and charges of collusion and favoritism toward Putin are bunk, it’s time for the president to address the Russian actions vigorously. We want that famous Trump outspokenness to be fully on display.”

“Ukraine is vital to America’s interests. Until it is back in Moscow’s grasp, Russia can never be a real superpower again.”

The fight of a kleptocracy versus a kleptocracy is none of our business in the USA. That said, Trump needs to be screaming at the top of his lungs. But, not one soldier.

Trump and Putin have already worked it out by phone.

    Dick Morris needs to retire.

The only thing that I can come up with is quite the opposite. We do not want the Soviet Union to be put back together. We could have the cold war all over again.

I thought this was a joke five years ago. Now that I live in a solid blue County in Texas, the reality can be quite harsh. The only republican left in our County is the sheriff and he was not up for election. I am quite sure that we will have a dumbocrat sheriff in two years. BTW, all of the dumbocrats that were elected to management positions in Fort Bend County do not have any management experience. Including the head of the County, the County Judge. Especially for a County with a $200 million/year budget.

My post for today was going to be about this–

    https://www.policefoundation.org/publication/after-action-review-of-the-orlando-fire-department-response-to-the-attack-at-pulse-nightclub/

This is the report they produced about the fire/EMS response. They have previously done a report on the LEO response, that is no longer at its URL. I’m going to go looking for it, as I expect it to be damning. ADDED- found it in their “Library” — https://www.policefoundation.org/publication/rescue-response-and-resilience-a-critical-incident-review-of-the-orlando-public-safety-response-to-the-attack-on-the-pulse-nightclub/

    Haven’t read it yet.

It’s worth spending the time to read thru the report, especially if you live in the Orlando area. The mistakes and buffoonery are typical of the state of most emergency plans.

    You are on your own.

Perhaps so about the Cold War. Which to me has never made any sense. But the commie USSR is gone. Now we have Russia.

My take from all of the history books I’ve read since I was a kid is that way down deep, Russia wants to be part of Europe. But as far as the French, Spanish, English, Germans, and etc. are concerned, Russians are little kids and White Trash and to be despised and spit upon. (little kids with a mean streak for sure.)

Sure. Russia is a few hundred years behind Europe…. Roman Empire and all that. But who was taking the brunt of the Eastern Hordes?

It’s complicated. But push come to shove, what would you rather? Russia ruling Europe (and ya know the Germans and perhaps the Swedes will be running the show) or Moslems and Sharia?

    I’m voting for the Russians.

  13. SteveF says:

The only reason Ukraine’s national defense is any business of ours is that NATO guaranteed Ukraine’s safety (from Russia, if that needs to be said) if they gave up their large number of USSR-era nukes. NATO promised, Ukraine de-nuked, and then NATO pretty well bagged on the promise. Where NATO, in practice, means the US.

And Paris is burning still…. the aerial photos show how large the affected area is, which you don’t usually get with these sorts of articles. The protests always look smaller from above than ground level.

Scientists are working to understand what spurred the mysterious waves on that day. So far, many suspect they’re related to an ongoing seismic swarm in the region that began last May.”

When we were driving back to Paris from Normandy to catch the plane home nine years ago, we passed a huge convoy of police vehicles. Hundreds of them with 2 or 3 police per vehicle. They were headed to Paris for a scheduled demonstration that weekend. The police did not look happy. It was almost like they were headed to a social event as the event staff.

It’s going to be bad, it’s going to be Brazil first, we’re about to lose Texas and Florida. Those elections were razor thin.

Republicans now control all three branches of state government in FL headed into redistricting, and both US Senate seats are secure for four years or more.

Demographic trends are impossible to control, but Colter is overreacting about FL. Trump will have to work for it unless the Clintons start dropping dimes on the field as they head to Iowa.

    @nick, re JVC techincal support

Your experience brought to mind my time as first level networking solutions technical support for a major manufacturer. I took a call from a colleague, asking me how a particular problem could be solved, and gave him the appropriate advice. He answered ‘I am not convinced’, I replied, ‘I am not trying to convince you, I am telling you’. He left the company not long after (nothing to do with me).

We are keeping our condo for now in Vegas and live in both places. Too much sweet, sweet goobermint cash in CA to move too far away. Our condo went up $50K the day the Raiders move was announced. The condo is 5 minutes up I15 to the stadium. My wife said when the condo goes up $100K we are becoming Tejas residents again. Houses are going like hot cakes in Vegas. My daughter sold her 5 year old home here for $100K profit.
