Tues. Apr. 19, 2022 – now the week can really get started

By on April 19th, 2022 in open thread, personal

Clear and moderate again today.  Like yesterday I hope.

Didn’t get much done on my personal list yesterday.  My wife had a list for me, and the universe laughs in my face when I make plans…

So some will shift to today, and some will fall by the wayside.

And some other tasks will get added to the pile.   Stack up all the things, he said.   Stacked up all the tasks is what happened!

Ah well, life IS the stuff we do while we’re planning to do something else.

So, start the day at the desk, get out of the house, do some things, and come home and do some more.   Simple, and yet complex.

Like everything, including prepping.

Stack up the stuff you need.   Including the knowledge that you won’t get it all, and you won’t get it all done.  Journey, not destination, and it has its own rewards.

     –  I thought Methodists only did Communion on special feast days?    That’s what I remember from my summer bible study classes at our local Methodist church, but that was a LONG time ago…

Have the Methodists always used leavened bread ?  I thought that only the Greek Orthodox used leavened bread. Do you rip off your own piece ?

The Church of Christ uses unleavened bread (unsalted crackers).  We used to pass a big cracker around in a tray and you broke off a corner.  Then we had trays passed around with individual open juice cups.  But since the Koof started, we have little individual packets that you grab on the way in.  We celebrate an open communion every Sunday.

I don’t know… we aren’t Methodists. This is just what this little church does. May be a pastoral innovation, the pastor and congregation have always been active in the Walk To Emmaus movement, so it could be that influence.   This congregation has communion on the First Sunday of each month.   The pastor breaks off a piece, and gives it to us, we hold it then we dip it into a chalice of grape juice, then partake.  It is open communion, don’t have to be a Methodist, or a member, or I guess even baptized as he allows children to partake and to assist.

I grew up in the Church of Christ, and our congregation did as Lynn’s does: unsalted cracker, each person breaks off a crumb, then the little individual cup that hold about a teaspoon of grape juice.

We first attended this Methodist church when we moved here, in order to meet local people, and we were active in the Walk To Emmaus for a long time until Paul got sick. It’s where my dad and stepmother go too. We love the congregation and the pastor (who is also our doctor… he is an FNP), but  we eventually moved to  large church in the county seat, the local Cowboy Church.

The Cowboy Church is a big, growing, young congregation. Lots of stuff going on and a fiery, prophetic pastor.   The little church down the street is also growing, adding about 10 members a year with a usual attendance of about 30 old people. Since they all know us, they’ve been very attentive to us over the past couple of years.  We haven’t “left” the Cowboy church, we’ve just started going to church closer to home.  Given our current limitations, it’s the place for us, and I imagine this is where we will stay, unless the theological problems get too far out of hand.

Cold in Dayton TN. Got down to 38 last night. We have an electric heater in the trailer that we use. We also have gas heat in the trailer with ducted vents. But why pay for gas when we can use the electric that we are paying for with the site fee.

A fairly nice place, well maintained. Lot of people with fishing boats. Trailer next to us is huge, 3 heavy duty axles. Apparently two people that are sponsored bass fishermen. Truck that pulls the boat is wrapped with lots of advertisements, boat matches the wrap, truck that pulls the trailer (Ford F-350 with duals) is wrapped to match the other truck and boat. Lots of money, paid by sponsors I am certain.

They headed out fishing early this morning. Has to be really cold as walking outside was not pleasant. Has to be worse on the water. Especially when traveling at 50 to 60 mph as those boats will easily accomplish. I suspect they are scouting locations for a fishing tournament this weekend.

This area, especially Dayton TN, is known for it’s bass fishing and the city even brags on being the Bass fishing capital of the state. I suspect it is more marketing hype than anything.

One more night here, have to be out by 10:00 AM. Will take about an hour to pack up, drain the tanks and hook to the truck.

I just recently discovered the zoom option on the rear camera. Really helps. There is also a guide line down the middle to align with the hitch on the trailer. Wish I would have known about that option when I bought the truck. I have never really had a problem hooking up and with the wife guiding it has been fairly easy. The zoom just adds to the ease.

The rear cam on my Expy made hooking to the trailer a one person job.  Very nice upgrade.

They did have the Sun Chips Salsa but the wife and daughter do not like those.

The Garden Salsa are actually my favorite variety of Sun Chips. I tried the new Chili Lime, but they were just okay. We’ve run into missing flavor problems with all sorts of brands. Teddy Grahams are only available in Honey (Cinnamon, Chocolate, Chocolate Chip, et. al. have disappeared from shelves for a couple of months now). We struggle to find Salt & Vinegar Pringles (one of my daughter’s favorites), but other flavors seem readily available. The manufacturers, especially Frito-Lay, don’t seem to be particularly upfront with what’s going on. The version I keep hearing is that employment and supply shortages mean they can’t produce everything. So, they’re picking their best-selling flavors and focusing on keeping those on the shelf.

Before you ask, yes, the girls are a bit old to be needing juice boxes.

Hey! I resemble that remark. I love a juice box and people can judge me all they want for it. Lately, I’ve been really into Capri-Sun. I never recognized the age appropriateness of snack foods and never stopped eating or drinking anything I loved as a kid simply because I was an adult.

I love Kings Hawaiian bread in the little dinner rolls.

I think Daniel Tosh makes a joke about Kings Hawaiian hamburger buns where he says something to the effect of, “It’s like eating a burger between two pieces of cake.” I do think they’re a tad too sweet. That pairs well with certain foods. I imagine a blackened chicken sandwich on a King’s Hawaiian bun would be awesome. However, I prefer my dinner rolls a bit more on the savory side (though, King’s Hawaiian does make a “Savory Butter” roll).

I usually dig wide holes, with flat bottoms. Add enough cement to make a stable “foot” for the post. A lot more work, but imho worth it.

Ideally, you want the base wider than the rest to help prevent the post from heaving when the ground freezes (if you live at an applicable latitude). We have pretty hard clay soil here and so many people will just plant the 4x4s two or three feet into the soil without concrete and it holds just fine.  Though, removing and replacing wooden fence posts when they inevitable rot is a huge pain in the ass. So, if I were putting in a new privacy fence tomorrow I’d get one with steel posts.

The supermarket shortage which bugs me the most is juice boxes.

I’ve seen it here too. It’s been just over a year since my son was diagnosed as Type I Diabetic. Right after that, I bought a 4 eight packs of apple juice boxes. I’ve upped that to having around 120 boxes on hand. Overkill, yes. But I will not f*ck with low blood sugar for him. If I have to throw some out as I rotate, it’s a price I will gladly pay. Supply of juice boxes has been bad at best. Most times I see only empty shelves. I have enough now to not worry about it, especially since he’s adjusted to his new normal.

Of course, there are lots of other options for low blood sugar events, but the juice box is easy, convenient, and really gets the sugar into the system quickly.

  7. ITGuy1998 says:

Though, removing and replacing wooden fence posts when they inevitable rot is a huge pain in the ass.

So true. I moved before the fence at our last house needed maintenance. Not so lucky at out present house. I’ve replaced 2 posts, and most of the pickets on the inside (around 400 6 foot wood pickets if I remember correctly). The 2 posts were more of a pain than everything else. My son and I had a good rhythm for replacing pickets though. We both removed the old ones and then would stack pickets for each section. I would place the board and he would nail with the nail gun.

  8. Jenny says:

At our last place, when I built the chain link fence I pounded in the fence posts. Concrete set posts, even with a belled concrete base, are ejected by seasonal heaving as we work thru thaw / freeze cycles.
My pounded posts were just as strong for suspending the fabric, and I could pound them back to proper height every few years as needed. My fence looked better than anyone else’s, I was able to keep the top rail level and the line and corner posts at the right heights. The effort for maintenance was minimal.

Would not have worked in stony ground. We were clay. It was still hard work doing the initial set but no worse than hand mixing concrete.

United Methodist here.  It varies.  Most United Methodist churches seem to do communion on the first Sunday, Easter, and Christmas.  Maunday Thursday and or Good Friday may get included as well.  Some, however, choose to have communion every week.  I think the holidays only impression derives from when many ministers (who are required for the sacraments) were serving a number of scattered congregations and served communion whenever they were present at a given church, along with baptisms, and marriages (although marriages are not sacraments in the UMC).

  13. lpdbw says:

    Happy Patriot’s day, y’all!

It’s a holiday in some places.  Ironically so, in Taxachusetts, except they moved it to the closest Monday.

As Longfellow wrote, “Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five:
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.”

Of course, the interesting stuff happened the next day.  And it shows the importance of the chronicler vs. the facts.  Longfellow was very good to Paul Revere, not so good for Dawes and Prescott and the other riders who didn’t get credit.

  14. Chad says:

Gonna fire the IT staff for incompetence?  Because no way in heII should he be able to access pron video on the school issued lappy.

That’s one of the problems with company/government-issued laptops. People have a decent laptop provided to them that they take home daily, so they stop investing in their own stuff and the work laptop becomes the primary home computer and everything that goes with it (gaming, porn, etc.).

Personally, if they’re not watching it on school property where a child may see it I really don’t care.  As hard as it is for people to stomach, their teachers and preachers have sex lives (be it all online or not).

Anyway.  I have/had about half a bag of pellets in the stove.  So it’s puttering along at Heat 1 and Fan 2.  Run that out and then I can put it to bed for the year.

Dunno, letting it sit from March to November with pellets in the system seems to be a recipe for problems of the rusting kind..  Could be wrong…. but why test that?

    Tonight’s gruel is Layer Stuff.

Brown off a pound of hamburger.  Add the usual salt and pepper.  Toss in some garlic powder and a couple of tablespoons of dried onion.  Turn the heat down from “fry” and dump in a 28oz can of diced tomatoes and about ¾ of a can of water.  Then not an entire bag of egg noodles… a bit more than half… I dunno…. I know how it’s suppose to look.  Sometimes you need the entire bag.   More salt and pepper on top of the noodles.  Cover and let it all simmer on low to cook the noodles.

It never comes out right.  I’m missing the secret ingredient.  Kind of like making Beef Stroganoff…. who knew a tablespoon of tomato paste was the secret?

Seems to me that wood pellets would be absorbing excess humidity. But even if they break down a bit, they should still burn. (As I recall from when I had a pellet stove around 1990.) I didn’t empty the pellet bin at the end of the heating season, I think. But this was in the Sacramento CA area – doesn’t get too humid there.

So don’t make excuses. Simply refuse to fly.

Pre-pandemic, the C-suites were really tightening the screws on the people who had travel written into their job descriptions. The previous previous job took away the frequent flier miles and mandated that a flight could not cost more than $100 more than the lowest coach seat available at the given time the employee needed to fly.

Of course, there were always ways to play that game, but book close to a holiday at the last minute and you were on a four hour flight to the West Coast in the middle seat in the back of a 737 on a busy flying Sunday.

    No seat upgrades!

Someone is always hungry for the work.

  38. nick flandrey says:

I had to play the ADA card to get the company to pay for an “upgradable” ticket to China/Scotland/Norway, so I could use my own points to get into Business class.   All travel costs were passed directly to the customer anyway, and the customer had a policy of Business class on international flights.   In other words, the customer wondered why it was even an issue to get Business Class.  The bruhaha over me insisting on it to China, an 18hr trip, cost me a budding relationship in the company and definitely limited my career path.  An this was all because the European sales office used to abuse the travel policy, flying First class all over the Europe and the middle East.  Flights of less than 4 hours!    I’ve done 4 hours on an Embraer 145 on the single seat side of the row FFS.   I’m 6ft 210 pounds and this was at the height of concern about Deep Vein Thrombosis.

The company issued an edict about being within $50 of the cheapest flight on the route, no limit on stops.   They’d make field service staff fly 8 hours with 3 connections to save $100, while losing the tech for a whole day instead of getting them to the problem.  The extra day then cost $1200 for a net loss, and pissed off the customer who was waiting for service.

Some people, who preferred sitting on airplanes to working would schedule the longest travel day possible, and maximize points or segments for their own later benefit.

I just refused to fly if the booking wasn’t the most direct and timely route possible, but I was senior and had  other options.

When I left, they didn’t even do an exit interview, just shut off my stuff.

Places do exit interviews again, but they are mostly about getting the employee to sign a  non-disparagement agreement – no posting reviews on Glassdoor, etc.

Sometimes they will want an ADEA waiver in return for an extra two weeks pay. The previous previous job who fired me did that.

Forgot the second half of your question Pecancorner.  Again varies.  Most of the UMCs I’ve been to in recent years use Intinction, break off a piece of the bread and dip it in the cup.  Because of Covid most have gone to the Minister breaking off the piece of bread and handing it to you with a gloved hand .  A couple churches I know of used to rotate each time between passing plates of bread pieces and cups on serving plates down the pews and then all taking at the same time, as I experienced in my youth at an American Baptist church; Intinction; and being served individually by the Minister at the communion rail.  I have seen mostly leavened bread used, from home baked to various sorts of store bought including pita bread.  One church rotated through all the types of bread, leavened and not, they were aware of being used by any denomination.  At the beginning of Covid scare we used those packaged individual things with the cardboard wafers, that didn’t last long.   There is a lot of latitude in the UMC.

Ha, missed it but the Fed did raise their overnight rate on Friday.   I guess that counts as me being right.

The Fed has begun raising interest rates.

On March 15, the Federal Reserve hiked its overnight lending rate by a ¼ point, taking its target range for Fed funds to 0.25% to 0.50% from 0.0% to 0.25%. Additionally, officials indicated that a total of seven rate hikes of a similar magnitude could be in store this year. If so, it would take the Fed’s overnight lending target range to 1.75% to 2.00% by year-end — a moderately faster pace than what most forecasters were expecting.

Higher interest rates should slow the pace of economic activity. But will interest rates rise enough to send the economy into recession?
