Fri. Dec. 27, 2019 – maybe museums

By on December 27th, 2019 in Random Stuff

Colder but still wet.

Got to the south suburbs of Chicago yesterday. Had a nice lunch, then did minor stuff for mom.

Today will be more of the same, either early or late, One of the museums in between, not sure yet which one.

Posting from phone due to Wi-Fi issues, so short and sweet…

Be good to yourselves and the one’s you love.

Support the hot dog vendor in front of Feld/Shedd if he’s open.

We ate there because I dug the sign, “These prices include a LOT of taxes.” The food was a good Vienna dog with a quality bun. Not extraordinary, but that wasn’t the point. People like him keep Chicago going.

If you’re still struggling with the 4GB laptop for travel, the newest versions of Fedora and Ubuntu Linux, compiled with GCC 9, are really useful to make that kind of memory restriction work.

I’m typing on a Dell machine which has a maximum memory limit of 4GB. Fedora Linux 31 and a cheap SSD make it a decent experience.

When I lived there, I always bought hot dogs from the street, push cart vendors. Here we have a chain branded Wienerschnitzel which offers a ” Chicago Dog”.

My son had his wisdom teeth out today. Now he is home recovering from the general anesthesia. The actual procedure was amazingly quick – 15 minutes at most.

My wife’s uncle (by marriage) owns a Wienerschnitzel in Rancho Cucamonga … or at least did. The aunt may have cleaned him out in a divorce by now.

From BH in the Fort Bend Herald:

Q: Why do Trump’s rallies occur in the evening ?

A: Because his supporters have jobs !

I had mine out courtesy of the USAF. My procedure involved removing all four in one sitting. The procedure took three hours. Lot of cutting, drilling, breaking teeth, removing pieces, the stitches. Novocain was wearing off the last 30 minutes and the surgeon was not allowed to give me anymore due to regulations. I was in much pain for several days even with a morphine prescription. Looked like a hoarding chipmunk for the same days.

Some Bernie Bros have jobs, as I’ve noted here before. The Progs’ May Day riots in Seattle don’t start until after shift change at Starbucks.

And Shot Girl had a job before Sugar Daddy got her into politics.

I have all of my wisdom teeth. I’ve looked at the x-rays… all straight like normal teeth.

The dentist says I have a big jaw. Ha ha. My Dad always said I had a big mouth.

Both of my sisters have had theirs out. Lots of cutting and digging, too. They deserve it.

I still have issues from the hack job involved in removing mine.

We ended up at the Museum of Science and Industry and had a nice day. Huge model railroad, lots of fun stuff to do. Could have spent more time there but it was dark when we left.

Did some more small projects for mom when we got home, and then discovered that we were locked out of siblings house. All keys are in MI. After too much drama I made a bump key. Only one door was in a place where I felt sorta safe bumping the lock. Bumped the dead bolt on the 2nd try, but could not get the knob. We’re sleeping at mom’s tonight. Tomorrow, in the daylight, with little kids in evidence, I’ll bump one of the other exterior doors. I did not want to try to explain to a cop, especially when sibling was not answering the phone, why I was messing with a locked house in the middle of the night.

    Fun times.

Nick – a cousin of my dad was involved in the design and painting of the walk-through human heart at MoS&I when he was a student. He went on to a great career as a medical illustrator.

Drove in, right? That’s not a train station I’d want to be in after dark.

The guided submarine tour is awesome.

I went with my dad, brother, and my son today to watch my Texas Aggies whup the Oklahoma State Cowboys with 70,000 new friends. The whupping did not happen until the fourth quarter but it did happen.

Barely. Three points is not a whupping, it’s just a tap on the shoulder. The onside kick at the end was not handled well by the Aggies and could have turned out worse. A couple of stellar runs by the QB was the difference in the game.

  16. Nightraker says:

I’ve never been able to get past a deadbolt without major drilling when a tenant looses their key. OTOH, the knob is relatively easy by prying the thin piece of trim with a stiff painter’s 5 in 1 tool or similar. The gap of 1/4 inch or less is enough to use the pry tool to slip the latch out of the strike plate if you are patient. Won’t work with a metal framed door and makes a mess if forty eleven coats of paint are on the door frame, but not usually the case. Pounding the trim piece back on and Bob’s your Uncle.

Jimbo’s chair will only be moderately warm starting next season instead of scorching hot.

He’s also lucky the Tampa Bay Yucs are at 7-8 and favored this weekend instead of looking for someone to blame for Jameis Winston. Winston may even get a year or two on his contract.

The boosters are still enraged in Tallahassee. That program will be a trainwreck for a long time.

I had a variety of useful things with me- hacksaw blade, couple of putty knives, thin steel ruler, etc.

They had an issue with a disgruntled employee, so the doors and jambs and the locks are all pretty good. Heavy weatherstrip, and the door from the garage is metal with a metal Jamb. Couldn’t shim a latch without damage.

And the dog walker came by this morning and used her key to unlock the door before we even got there. I did oil a couple of cylinders.
