Mon. Dec. 23, 2019 – snow melted, kids are poking at each other

By on December 23rd, 2019 in Random Stuff

Another cold and wet day.

Yesterday was low 40s and most of the snow melted. The backyard is in shadow and still has well worn but adequate snow cover. No sledding though.

It’s a bit weird being here this early. Feels like Christmas should be today. I’m getting some recreational reading done, and the occasional little project around the house.

Food is awesome, but we’re almost out of cookies. Something might have to be done about that.

Meanwhile the world continues to prove that half the people are below average, and most of them have lost their minds.

Slow internet here, so I’m limiting my exposure. Just as well.

I’ll be checking in throughout the day,

    44F and sunny today.

Delicious smells from the kitchen. Neighbors coming over for dinner later. Possibly the cookie drought will be addressed.

3 giant dogs are quiet this morning.

Kids need some last minute shopping so we might head out to see what the local foraging options are. Tourist city, so there should be some options that aren’t china crap.

48F, cloudy, off and on rain predicted. Better than yesterday but still really not cool enough to feel like winter. One day of work before two off. Probably not much today but there might be some that would like to get 3 days into one.

A real miracle would be to turn off the news.

Not surprising. What really surprises me is the support for the stock at current prices. BA still isn’t a screaming buy.

It wasn’t just the 737 fiasco. The Starliner failure is as much of a PR disaster as 737MAX IMHO. NASA looked the other way on Boeing’s costs in order to have a backup plan for SpaceX from one of the agency’s traditional overpriced partners.

While on the topic of overpriced space hardware, Boeing also runs SLS. It will fly once … maybe.

    Really! Never heard of that.

  6. JimB says:

BTW, I thought you were in Indiana or Michigan. There are tourist cities there?

  7. Nick Flandrey says:

I’m in MI, about half way up the coast. Don’t want to leave a searchable name, but they play host to the Coast Guard for a big event in the summer. They are also locally famous for their ‘dancing waters’ show during summer nights.

The name is synonyms for “big” or “big and fancy” and “a safe place from a storm”.

WRT the china crap, there are lots of local craftpersons doing folk art for the summer tourist season, and it gets sold in local shops year round.

  8. JimB says:

Got it. I looked at a map, and tried to come up with something outrageous, but couldn’t. MI is a state with many small towns, whose names are derived from very old names of various origins. I’ll bet SteveF could find something hilarious without even putting on his pants. 😉

And, good for the local craftsmen XXX persons. They are the best of many communities.

Using some geeky trickery, and because I can get into the admin area here, I know approximately where @nick is.

But I’ll keep it a secret.

  11. Ray Thompson says:

Wife needed to renew her driver’s license, REAL ID (another government program) this time. Provided all the necessary papers as requested on the DMV website. Nope, not good enough because the name changed and the DMV had the name wrong. Needed a passport to prove the name. Then needed to change her name on the SS card as it was incorrect, same issue as the DMV. Birth certificate and marriage license are no good to change the name. Needed a drivers license but no can do as she only has the paper temporary which the SS office will not accept. Needed the passport, again. Of course the passport was based off the birth certificate and marriage license neither of which the SS office would not accept.

It does make one wonder how someone without a driver’s license and passport could go about getting their name changed at the SS office. Since normal documents are not good enough. How does one get a REAL ID if the individual does not have a passport even though all the mandated documents have been provided? The entire system is a cluster flock(-lo)(+u).

When my license is up for renewal in 2021 I am going to use my VA ID just to mess with their minds. Yes, I like doing that to the clods. I suspect the office will not accept the item but I will try. I will have my passport card with me as that proves I am a citizen. Four documents are required, proof of citizenship, proof of SSN, valid driver’s license (or HCP), and proof of address such as a recent utility bill, tax document or bank statement.

My advice is take several pieces of anything that can prove who you are and where you live. Each adventure with the government offices has required two trips, mostly because they can. The office cretins want us to know they are in charge.

  12. paul says:

Ray, I took all of that stuff when I renewed my d/l in October. Nah…. they have it all on file already. Eh, I don’t look like a Mexican.

  13. Ray Thompson says:

The biggest issue the spousal unit had was the the middle name (actually initial) was not the same in all places. When we moved to TN the DMV used the wrong middle name even though we told them to not use the middle name. But the DMV apparently knew better or the more likely scenario a lazy ass clerk. After the license arrived we tried to get it corrected but the hassle was just too much and required several several supporting documents. How the SS office got it wrong we don’t know and did not consider it a big deal. Well with Medicare looming for the spousal unit, and the REAL ID requirements, it was time to get all the documents to match.

DMV has her SSN, the SS office has her SSN, Medicare has her SSN, first and last name match, middle initial is all that is incorrect. Six hours of time, multiple trips to various offices, and we think it is now correct. But until the official SS card and DL arrive, who knows.

I’m glad I did RID at my last renewal. A real PITA! I’m prodding MrsAtoz to do it now rather than wait for renewal and it won’t be good to fly. The goobermint might kick it down the road since illegals can’t get one. Or can they?

Since the new CEO is not a pilot, I do not think that Boeing is serious.

  18. JimB says:

Both of us did the RID (now, THERE’S an acronym!) When our DLs were up for renewal a few months ago, and it was a breeze. ‘Course we live in California! 🙂

Draw your own conclusions. Oh, and we are legal.

Just wait until we have open borders.

I don’t think the CEO’s background has mattered since Boeing relocated HQ to Chicago 20 years ago.

The management didn’t make much of a fuss when Mayor Daley subsequently bulldozed Meigs Field and turned into a swampy eyesore “park”.

Just wait until they start working on Pence. The House approves any replacement.

  23. SteveF says:

Meh. Unless there’s actual evidence of Pence’s corruption, a supposition I find highly unlikely, the Senate won’t convict Pence no matter how many times Pelosi shakes her tiny fist. And in a year and ten days the Republicans will resume control of the House, unless the shooting war began around the middle of November, 2020, on account of an intolerable level of election fraud.

Heading out tomorrow for the son’s house. I will be taking I-40 west, probably leave about 8:00A. Normal travel time is 2.5 hours. If traffic is bad I will use highway 70 west which runs through a lot of small towns. Travel time on that road is 3.5 hours. I-40 tends to get swamped with trucks. Especially the ones that are traveling 70.025 mph trying to pass another truck traveling 70 mph. Several locations are marked for no trucks in the left lane. Based on personal experience there are a lot of truck drivers that cannot read, don’t know their left from their right, cannot count lanes, or simply want to be rectum orifices. I suspect mostly the latter.

    RID = Real ID ?

I have heard that illegals can fly without documents.

  27. Ray Thompson says:

    RID = Real ID ?

Yep. Needed to board a plane in the U.S. (or U.S. territories) for domestic travel or a passport or passport can be used. To travel into Mexico or Canada by car a passport or passport card can be used. To fly or travel by boat into Canada or Mexico requires a passport as a passport card cannot be used. To travel to any other countries requires a passport.

Any time I travel in the U.S. I use the passport card, not the passport. Easier to carry.

    She’s back !

Trying to stay relevant after turning the big 3-0 in October and losing the media oxygen to Impeachment in November and December.

If the cocktail waitress isn’t primaried next year she’ll have to cut a deal with the establishment Dems in NY to keep her seat after redistricting. Absent the citizenship question, the state stands to lose at least three seats to TX, CA, and FL after the census next year.

Ironically, a citizenship question could actually help Shot Girl keep her seat.

I hope that you are right about the People’s House transitioning back to the repuglicans but I am worried that you are wrong. Too many people out there want free stuff and want it now !

  30. lynn says:

I was told by a customer today that they successfully used our software to create an online digital twin this year of an LNG plant. The LNG plant was also designed using our software and brought online this year with minimal problems. I am seeing the phrase “digital twin” everywhere nowadays as the latest engineering buzzword.

My DL has the realid star, and I have flown since the changeover. I don’t recall doing anything different at all when I got the new one, other than driving 40minutes to a small town where the wait would be 4 minutes or less. Texas wasn’t going to play along but finally caved to the Feds. Maybe they just gave it to all of us? Maybe my carry license on file was enough? Maybe I did online paperwork long ago and forgot? No idea. I did have a moment of panic when in the line for TSA and I noticed the sign, then realized the date had passed, thinking I’d never gotten a real id. Wife showed me the star and said I was ok.

Time for bed here in the eastern time zone…

Our local walking corpse Republican beat back “Doors”, but he did it by reminding the district what he’s done with the VA in Williamson and Bell Counties — not strictly free stuff, but still pork he brought home from DC.

If the Republicans want the House back, I believe that they will have to agree to negotiate on the student loan debt as part of de-nationalization of the program. Total forgiveness would teach a bad lesson, but we will have to arrive at a national consensus on what is appropriate.

Failing to de-nationalize student loans now is just kicking the can down the road and making the university system more dependent on cheap money given without much thought.

Of course, in the bargain, the snowflakes are going to have to accept that it isn’t their right to float for four years with a “C” average in ‘Sosh’ at a mediocre state school before ending up at Starbucks anyway. Personal responsibility is a hard sell.

  33. DadCooks says:

It’s getting so that it is easier, quicker, and cheaper for us real citizens to get whatever ID and/or passport you want just by going to the seedy side of town (even the smallest place has one) and paying the fellow for what you want. Of course, if you are from certain countries (like South of the border and Africa) the gooberment cannot hassle you because you are from the privileged downtrodden class.
