Fri. Nov. 9, 2018 – gonna get worse

By on November 9th, 2018 in Random Stuff

Mid 80s during the day and humid. No rain though. Sunny and miserable. I see that Houston is set for rain.

Crowds outside political opponent’s homes, yelling matches at press conferences, it’s the end of civility and it’s gonna get worse.

There was vote cheating, more will come to light, more will be attempted. And that will lead to violence.

39º and cloudy in the woody state. Well, it used to be VERY wooded. Now it’s just very wooded.

Kids were excited to see snow falling on the back porch this morning. The ground is too warm & damp for it to stick, so nothing to take a good picture of. But it’s coming.

We CAN pull back from the brink. Civility would help an awful lot. That applies to every aspect of our lives. Outrage breeds outrage. Before social media, you could get outraged in a group, but it couldn’t spread, because there simply wasn’t a way for it to spread. Today, outrage in California can trigger outrage all across the country and around the world. The ONLY way to combat outrage and snuff it out is to snuff it at every turn.

When you are outraged by something, don’t respond with outrage. If something must be countered, a calm, reasoned response is called for.

^^^^ That’s probably going to trigger outrage in some people. Okay. I can live with that. But if we can tone down the rhetoric and get back on speaking terms, we have a chance.

And the street protesters? Don’t pay them any attention. If it works for my kids, it can certainly work on them, given the chance.

  2. SteveF says:

    Don’t pay them any attention.

Exactly. Just ignore them, act like you don’t see them. Especially when their “protests” involve lying down in the middle of the road.

  3. Ray Thompson says:

Had a protest in Knoxville over Trump and Mueller. All of 75 people. But the news saw fit to give them coverage. Should have just ignored the protestors. 75 people in TN is not a protest but a family reunion.

  4. JimB says:

    Hey, I represent that!

  5. SteveF says:

How are people counted at Tennessee family reunions? If you say “here is my sister, my wife, and my aunt”, do they count her as one person or three?

  6. Ray Thompson says:

How are people counted at Tennessee family reunions?

They count the number of teeth and divide by three.

Re: Maryland – and so it begins.

    There is an appropriate quote:

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? ……………..
The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…
We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

How do you misplace a ballot box? Is not every box identified and checked into the election office by the county clerk? Are logs with dates and times not kept? Are there not independent observers present?
I live in California’s third largest (by geographic size) county. There is valley, mountain and desert communities and some are over a hundred miles from the county seat. We don’t misplace them.
Finding ballots smells, and it ain’t roses.

@paul – re FileZilla (from yesterday)

I quit using FileZilla many years ago when I noticed that it stored site credentials in a plaintext file on the local drive. I asked them about it, and they didn’t seem concerned, and weren’t going to fix it. So I dumped them.

I now use WinSCP (open source); works quite nicely. You can set up a master password for all sites, in addition to each site’s credentials. And credentials are stored in an encrypted file.

    So, not a FileZilla fan…

My host, https://www.pair.com/ , just added support for ftps. I imagine that they will be dropping support for ftp soon. Is there a command line ftps in winscp ? I have a horribly complicated ftp script for backing my websites to my hard drive weekly.

Looks like GE is heading for bankruptcy. All of those young MBAs with their spreadsheets ran them into financial disaster. And they owe my business five figures which is six months late as usual. I now suspect that we will not see that money.

My employer makes parts for their engines. Net 120 is what they demand. More like net 180. If it weren’t for the volume, it wouldn’t be worth it. But even with 6 months of float, we make money on it.

    Maybe it’s time to stop…

I imagine the gas turbines, compressors, locomotive engines, etc, etc, etc will be liquidated fairly quickly in the bankruptcy process. Those are hard assets and very valuable. They are also generally the best in class of their respective areas.

Although, their brand new 300 MW gas turbine is apparently corn cobbing the compressors. Corn cobbing is where an upstream blade comes loose and wrecks everything downstream of it. I inspected one back in 1987 or so, it was a very impressive failure.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/donald-trump-played-central-role-in-hush-payoffs-to-stormy-daniels-and-karen-mcdougal-1541786601

“Federal prosecutors have gathered evidence of president’s participation in transactions that violated campaign-finance laws”

“As a presidential candidate in August 2015, Donald Trump huddled with a longtime friend, media executive David Pecker, in his cluttered 26th floor Trump Tower office and made a request.”

“What can you do to help my campaign? he asked, according to people familiar with the meeting.”

“Mr. Pecker, chief executive of American Media Inc., offered to use his National Enquirer tabloid to buy the silence of women if they tried to publicize alleged sexual encounters with Mr. Trump.”

“Less than a year later, Mr. Trump asked Mr. Pecker to quash the story of a former Playboy model who said they’d had an affair. Mr. Pecker’s company soon paid $150,000 to the model, Karen McDougal, to keep her from speaking publicly about it. Mr. Trump later thanked Mr. Pecker for the assistance.”

“The Trump Tower meeting and its aftermath are among several previously unreported instances in which Mr. Trump intervened directly to suppress stories about his alleged sexual encounters with women, according to interviews with three dozen people who have direct knowledge of the events or who have been briefed on them, as well as court papers, corporate records and other documents.”

What law do you suggest was broken?

  21. JimL says:

What law do you suggest was broken?

What law was broken when Bill & Monica did the dirty?

Rhetorical question. It’s not in violation of any law to have sexual relations with a consenting adult. But that doesn’t matter in the court of public opinion or in the House.

  22. Ray Thompson says:

How do you misplace a ballot box?

Those are contingency ballots. Created weeks ago and saved in case the candidate loses by less than a few thousand votes. Nothing was misplaced.

I quit using FileZilla many years ago when I noticed that it stored site credentials in a plaintext file on the local drive.

That does not matter to me. If someone gets my hard drive I have bigger issues. There is nothing on my website that is worth stealing.

Is Trump in legal trouble here ?

For what? Porking another adult is not against the law nor is paying money to someone to shut up. If she demanded money that is extortion, if he offered money that is OK.

But that doesn’t matter in the court of public opinion or in the House.

Exactly. Remember Dr. Ford? Where is she now? Politicians using someone with possible lies to reach an agenda. Nothing new here.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/democrats-plan-to-pursue-most-aggressive-gun-control-legislation-in-decades-1541791440

“WASHINGTON—Democrats say they will pass the most aggressive gun-control legislation in decades when they become the House majority in January, plans they renewed this week in the aftermath of a mass killing in a California bar.”

“Their efforts will be spurred by an incoming class of pro-gun-control lawmakers who scored big in Tuesday’s midterm elections, although any measure would likely meet stiff resistance in the GOP-controlled Senate.”

“Democrats ousted at least 15 House Republicans with “A” National Rifle Association ratings, while the candidates elected to replace them all scored an “F” NRA rating.”

The dumbrats can pass gun control legislation all they want. None will be passed by the Senate nor signed by Trump.

    ftps or sftp?

cURL will do ftps from the command line. We use that to transfer toll tag images to the archival machine in our system which uses ftps. You may also look at lftp which scripts uploads. Both are available as part of Cygwin, but I believe native Win32 ports float around. Just be careful where you pick up binaries.

sftp installs as part of OpenSSH. I’d trust SSH over SSL any day if your ISP supports the former.

You need to get that TAMU intern this summer to upgrade your scripts. 🙂

Hall of Presidents was very good. No one did any thing inappropriate. It is the only attraction one seen with a visible security guard in the room…. it’s funny how we use the new words as nouns . The Constitution is literally the document that describes how our government is constituted. The President PRESIDES over our government. The words and ideas were new.

If you haven’t been in a while, The Haunted Mansion got a few nice tweaks in Florida, especially the new “Hitchhiking Ghosts”.

I am too. I always use two hands when firing my guns nowadays. Especially my semi-auto handguns as I tend to limp wrist those and cause misfeedings. This is why I am moving back to revolvers. I want a Ruger 7 round GP100 .357 snubbie now. In fact, I want a half dozen of them to leave in special places.

I have an electric gate at the property line. You can use the remote if you have one or push a button on a post. A doorbell button. Not a keypad requiring the secret code.

A closed gate keeps out the teens looking for a place to make out. Mostly, keeps the dogs and emu in.

UPS is suppose to deliver a package. Signature required.

So….. there’s a post with a doorbell button that will open the gate. Where did UPS stick the failed delivery notice?

You got it. Right over the button.

The regular UPS guy must be on vacation. I hope.

I’ll give WinSCP a look. Thanks.

I looked in my FileZilla folder and didn’t find a plain text file with my settings and passwords.. There’s an xml file but the “password” is garbled and the rest looks useless.

I have three ftp addresses. Microsoft, ubnt, and my site. Does Microsoft do ftp anymore? It doesn’t work for me. ubnt is for a dead router.

Anyway, no one uses my PC but me. I don’t care if FTP to my site is encrypted. The site is not. I’m not seeing the need to encrypt.

I just spent two hours interviewing a very nice young man for the sales job. He is 23 and has a degree in management information systems from the University of Houston. He is working near here and wants to jump to a 100% sales job which this job is. He actually lives two miles away from the office. Of the five people who applied for the job, he is the best that I have talked with so far. I may offer him the job next week after the office manager and I talk (she interviewed him first). One of my partners interviewed him on Wednesday and gave him a hearty thumbs up. He wants the job very much.

My question for a sales person is always how they feel about the ABC rule (Always Be Closing). He did not know the rule acronym but he liked it.

Disney is very careful about new tech in The Mansion to avoid upsetting the purists. I notice that The Bride gets tweaked all the time, but she’s low tech and the changes tend to be subtle.

The OpenGL “Hitchhking Ghosts” antics are kinda controversial in Florida, but not many fans will complain that tech is finally available to make the Hatbox Ghost work after 50 years in California. Hopefully FL gets him soon.
