Month: January 2025

Tues. Jan. 21, 2025 – actual snow. And a new President.

Well, IDK what it’s going to be like today. Real snow started at about 2am, and I went to bed. The forecasts are all suspect, so I’m going with “temps around freezing” with some precipitation. I don’t really expect there to be much accumulation when I get up today. I could be wrong. We’ll see. And I have no idea at all what to expect today and tonight, except that it’s about 90% certain to be less than what was predicted.

Spent yesterday buttoning up the BOL, driving home, and then doing a couple of small things to “get ready” for the snowpocalypse…. Mainly doing something to protect the hot water heater on the side of the house. I insulated all the lines last time it got cold. That has worked fine. I put a 100w flood light under the unit by the lines and valves, and put a metal screen over the whole thing to block some of the wind. Hopefully that will be enough. Turns out, putting the water heater outside the conditioned volume of the house is risky. I won’t be doing that again.

My doctor’s appointment for today got cancelled so I’ll probably just stay in and do some cleaning/organizing and some computer work. Maybe I’ll get the wifi changed over to ubiquiti WAPs like I’ve been planning. It would be nice to get a pi-hole set up too, although I’m not ready for that. I should really pull some backups too.

There’s always more to do. Always be working…

and stack some good stuff…

Mon. Jan. 20, 2025 – a day to remember absent friends…

On this day in 2018, Robert Bruce Thompson passed away. Bob was the originator of this blog, among a great many other things. It’s a rare day that goes by without me thinking of him.

I’ve been “unlocking the door, and turning on the lights” here since he got sick, a task that I thought would be temporary, and short lived. With Barbara’s blessing, I have continued to do so to keep this place, Bob’s memory, and the community that lives here alive.

I’ve now published just over 2500 daily posts, slightly more than half of the total since Bob switched blogging platforms. Over 17,500 comments, of the almost 244,000 total. It’s those 244K comments that tell the real story– it’s the people who keep coming here, reading, commenting, and returning, that make this a special place on the internet and in the world.

The world is a better place for having had Bob in it, and for having all of you in it too.

I hope you will continue to find comradeship and value here, and stay with us as we make our way through whatever is coming, and to better days ahead.

As we move forward, take some time to look back and remember Bob, and the others who are now absent from our lives, but still part of us.

Thank you for the opportunity to continue being a part of your life.

Sun. Jan. 19, 2025 – probably cold. Winter is coming…

Well, it’s gonna be colder today. It was really nice yesterday. I actually was out in the sunny day in just long pants and a long sleeve shirt. The lack of wind certainly helped. Wife and guest even went out in the kayaks. It got cold when the sun went down though. Today I think I’ll probably find some indoor stuff to do…

I woke moderately late, had a nice breakfast, and got some stuff done. It took much longer than I thought to get the plumbing done and get the heater connected in the garage. I needed a fitting I didn’t have, but worked around it. The heater works GREAT. It brought the garage up to 72F from 55F before I turned it down. We did have the oven running in there for a bit too, but it was mostly the Mr Heater “Blue Flame” heater. IDK what the gas consumption rate is, but it puts out a lot of heat. I think it’s the 20K BTU unit.

Now we have a backup heat solution for the garage, and by extension, the house. When I get the living room remodel done, I’ll add a gas nipple in there too. I have the same unit for the Houston house, in a NATGAS version. I’ll do the same as here, plumb in a quick connect, but I’ll take it off the gas log in the fireplace. That will be much more efficient than the log if we need supplemental heating.

The garage heat was on my list, but I only got to it because I couldn’t do the electrical project my wife bumped to the top. I had collected most of what I thought I’d need to add a 50A 240V outlet on the side of the carport. The idea was it would be for any RV parked on the pad, an EV charger, or a welding machine. Turns out the wire I had was undersized and had one too few conductors for the application. I’ll need to buy the correct wire, and a new breaker for the panel. That will be top of the list for next visit. I did have suitable boxes and outlets, along with a box full of adapters and various 30A and 50A receptacles. There have been a surprising number of variations over the years.

Made a nice dinner in the garage oven– lamb roast, potatoes, and roasted brusselsprouts. The house was warm enough that it was nice to not have the heat in the kitchen. Had to tap a bucket to get more flour for the bread… preps, I got ’em.

After movie night, we had the first clear dark sky in months. Got out the big dob to look at Jupiter. It was very cold over the water though, and that was all the stargazing we did.

All in all, a very good day. I’m hoping today will be half as good.

I’ve got plenty on the list. Exhaust fans for kitchen and baths, electrical outlets for towel warmer, server rack; cat5 for cams and network drops… We’ll see what I get to. There is still baseboard to attach in the dockhouse too.

There’s always ways to improve your situation. Always be working, always be stacking!

Sat. Jan. 18, 2025 – oh shoot, I missed “Janteenth”

Cool and wet, maybe even cold. I’m also not believing the forecasts for 3″ of snow in Houston. It was kinda nice for most of yesterday, then it got kinda grey… there was some light fog in the valleys out in the country after nightfall too.

I did my pickup, hit the costco for gas and a couple of sale items. The gas line was possibly the longest I’ve ever seen it, at 3pm. No line at HEB and only 10c more. I opted for HEB for gas. I did go in the Costco since I was there, even with more cars in the parking lot than I’ve ever seen before. It wasn’t too crowded, but more than I’d like. They had a lot of lanes open for checkout, so it went quickly. Two observations. They didn’t have any chicken legs. Thighs, breasts, bone in or boneless, and even wings, but no legs. Lamb is a great value. Might be cheaper now in real terms than 4 years ago. That will end if the shipping gets too expensive. Oh, and a third observation, they had a new shelf stable bread. It’s a multi pack of small baguettes that you heat and eat. I’ll try them this weekend and let you know how they taste.

After shopping, getting the kid from school, getting gas, etc. I loaded up the truck and headed to my other pickups, on the way to the BOL. I underestimated the traffic. By a LOT. I made two stops, but I’ll have to beg forgiveness from the third.

Made it up here and decided to try for an early night. Hah. 2am might be considered early for me under some circumstances, but it wasn’t what I was hoping for. I’ll just have to sleep late.

I did bring some things to stack up here. I’ll be doing electrical today though. W just adjusted my priorities. She’s having guests, and they will need to plug in their camper. So that moved to the top of my list. I think I can make it work. I’ve been collecting parts, but it wasn’t top o the pile for me… until it was.

Flexibility. That’s a prep too.

Stacking is easier.

Fri. Jan. 17, 2025 – another week gone, no canned sunshine… hooray

Still, cold and damp. It did clear up and turn into a nice sunny day, so that was nice. I’m hoping for more sun today. Probably cool to cold though, since winter is coming through later.

I took a nap after breakfast and felt better yesterday. Did my southerly pickups. I’ll do the northerly pickups today. Hit the goodwill bins, but it was mostly clothes so I didn’t get much. Some days the product mix is off and there isn’t much for me to look at. I only had time to stop at the surplus because D1 kept moving her pickup time around. Kid doesn’t plan. It did give me more time for my stuff, but meant no practice driving time for her.

Today I’ve got a bunch of moving stuff around and putting stuff away to do, then pickups to the north of Houston. I am headed to the BOL for the weekend so I’ll load the truck and get ready first. Then I’ll do the pickups on the way. No sense in coming home, then going back up that way later. I’ll have to do my pickup in Sugar Land first. Most of the stuff is headed to the BOL anyway.

Hopefully, we won’t lose power in Houston and freeze while I’m at the BOL making sure we don’t lose power and freeze up there. I will stop and get some extra gas for the gennie on the way. I can always put it in the truck later if I don’t use it up there.

First world is sliding to third world status.

That’s just one reason to prep. There are many more…

So stack up what you need. And be prepared…

Thur. Jan. 16, 2025 – low vibrational energy. Hmm.

Another winter day in Houston is about to start. Cold and wet. Place is a swamp so it’s usually wet. Cold air pushes down from the north, and we get cold. SO we get cold and wet. We did yesterday, we will today, and tomorrow is likely to be cold and wet too. Or at least cool and damp…

Very short shrift today.

Spent yesterday doing a few things. Morning was full of domestic bliss. Early afternoon too. Kid celebrated her braces removal with donuts, and I had too much sugar to stay awake.

Afternoon was taken up with the other kid.

Rainy and grey all day had me hiding in the house. Not much got done. I’m also not feeling 100%. Could be too much sugar poisoning me, or I could be getting sick. In any case I am dragging.

I did get a bit of cleaning done, but there is so much left to do.

Today I have some pickups to do. Then there will be kid taxi stuff. Not much else getting done. I guess that’s ok but it feels like slacking.

Should I be the best possible slacker I can be?? Hmm, probably not.

I will just keep on plodding along, and stacking.

Wed. Jan. 15, 2025 – oh, so you wanted it to dry out a bit…

Another cold wet day is in the cards, if today will look a lot like yesterday. It started clear enough, but progressed to overcast and then scattered drops by nightfall. Never really got rain at the house, but had to use the wipers running the kid around town. Since the national forecast showed a rain blob encroaching on SE Texas over the next couple of days, I’m going with “cold and wet” again. C’est la vie.

Did some stuff. Did a couple of pickups. Talked to some cops. Adjusted my storage unit rent. Got the senior discount. First time for that…

Yep, while I was out doing pickups, I got a call that one of my storage units had been burgled. Turns out they broke the latching mechanism since they couldn’t cut my lock, rolled up the door, and took the first stack of black and yellow bins. That was ebay stuff mostly. They looked at a stack of books but didn’t take any that I could see. They took some stuff that looked like vintage electronics, but was not worth much, and left stuff that would have been an easy sell… They robbed 5 units in half an hour while the manager was off property for lunch. Turns out I have insurance, so I’ll make a claim. No deductible, and I won’t get near my limit. It’s better than a sharp stick in the eye.

That put me finishing my errands during rush hour which cost me extra time due to traffic. I’m not thrilled.

Today, youngest gets her braces off her teeth. She’ll be bouncing around all day. It’s me taking her to that appointment and then back to school, so my morning is full. My afternoon is catching up with stuff that I didn’t do yesterday. And I should probably cook something nice for dinner. Domestic bliss. Honestly wouldn’t miss it for the world, but it does mean I’m fooling myself with some of the other stuff.

It’s good motivation for stacking though. I’ll include some, even if just a little bit. Do what you can, when you can.

Tues. Jan. 14, 2025 – even more of the same, with even less of the different…

Cool and damp. Yesterday was cold, but so clear, and a beautiful sunrise with pinks and oranges… at least I get a light show while waiting for the school bus. Still dang cold at 42F though. And there were puddles on the ground so despite the clear air, there must have been quite a lot of humidity. Of course at 42F that’s relative.

I’m expecting pretty much the same today. I am hoping things dry out a bit more so I can put them away. That was one of the things that didn’t happen yesterday. I got several auction pickups done though, and because D1 came home sick, I didn’t have to be home at 3pm to get her from school. That helped me get more done. Did a dump run, with some debris from the BOL that was in the driveway.

Spent some time talking with the auctioneer I use most often to sell, and they’ll be ready for some of my stuff next month. I’m calling the other auction house today to try and move some stuff this week. I need to get it out of the house, and I’d like to have some selling options. One of the houses I used to use left the business, and the first one has been focused on their own inventory, while my industrial guy hasn’t been taking consignments and when he did, I lost money. It’s a mess. Time to start cleaning it up.

I need to do some ebay selling on my own too. And maybe some Craigslist. I’m trying mightily to avoid fakebook marketplace.

Today I’ll be working on all those things and MOAR! I sometimes wish I was in mom’s basement cranking out dank memes and getting on watchlists… and playing video games until I got motion sick. Then I remember how much I like my life.

Stack some things to like. So that you can remember.

Mon. Jan. 13, 2025 – back to it…

Warmer, and damp but maybe not wet. It was misty, drippy and grey most of Sunday, but it did get a little bit of blue sky before dusk. I’m hoping the blue was a harbinger of today’s weather. But if not, I’ll deal.

Spent yesterday casually doing stuff around the house. I was poking at my office cleanup, watching some auctions close, putting Christmas decor away, and half a dozen other things. W did get the tree stripped and the bins loaded for the attic. I put them away at the end of the day. It’s opened up the foyer and living room… and if I can get some of my auction stuff out of here it will open up even more. That’s the goal anyway.

Today I’ll be on the phone making some appointments, if I can. I’ll be trying to get an auction set up too. And I might head south to do a pickup, so that I don’t have to go in opposite directions tomorrow. I’m sure some domestic bliss will happen too. Then it’s a kid pickup in the middle of the afternoon, and the other kid in early evening. I have to build my schedule around that. Finally, if it’s dry enough, I’ll get the last of the outdoor decor down. Or maybe I’ll go back to bed, and spend the day reading. Probably not.

There is always work to be done, and preps to be stacked.

So I’ll get to work, stacking.

Sun. Jan. 12, 2025 – written at 12:12 on 1-12, hmmm…

Another cold but sunny and dry day? Dunno. Hope so. Yesterday went a long way toward drying out my remaining Christmas decor. I’d like to have today to dry out the rest. And not freezing all day would be nice. It was below freezing with frost on the ground and cars yesterday morning. I think I’ll sleep late to avoid that today.

Yesterday was my non-prepping hobby meeting day. It was nice to get together with everyone. Several people who I didn’t get to see or talk to last month at the potluck dinner were there Saturday. It was a good day to just hang out and talk a bit. No one can believe the incompetence displayed in Cali, and no one found the idea that it could be intentional at all scoff worthy. We’re at a point where anything could be true. Or all lies. It’s very disconcerting.

Afterwards I came home, napped for a bit, did some domestic bliss, and avoided doing any major cleanup.

Today I’ll be paying for my slackitude. We need to get the house back together and get my stuff sorted out. I’ll be talking with a new auction to sell some of my stuff, and hopefully getting some of it out of the house. W is starting to send my articles about the negative effects of clutter and disorder… and it’s past the point where I should have been more proactive.

So that will be a priority, once I actually get my thumb out and get started.

The reorganization of my office and workspace needs to continue too.

Lots of opportunities coming up to miss deadlines and fail to complete tasks…

But the stacking will continue, at least a little bit, and mostly ‘targets of opportunity.’

I urge you to do so too.

nick
