Sun. Mar. 15, 2026 – taxes in a month…

Cold? Supposed to get down to freezing last night as a front moves in. IDK, because I’m asleep. Probably and hopefully. Clear and cold is on the forecast. Yesterday was very nice after a cool start. 85F in the sun in the early afternoon. Dunno where we’ll end up today.

I had my hobby meeting. It was productive. We’re already starting on the Fall show, which is good. And the search for a new meeting place continues.

I had too much sugar for lunch and took a nap for most of the afternoon and did NOTHING on the list. Hopefully my back is feeling better today and I can get some stuff done.

Always be working. Stack what you can.

    Sunday. Good morning!

We are having April weather in March. Yesterday it was cold and snowy. This morning is sunny, and shaping up to be a nice spring day.

I had troubled dreams all night, even after waking and returning to sleep. Dinner last night was pizza. I wonder if it was the cheese? My late father always said cheese before bedtime was bad for one’s sleep.

Thanks for the various suggestions about how to capture video from YT. Will be trying those out.

This is really cool. A custom mRNA vaccine to  kill a tumor in a dog.

That is indeed, really cool. A talented and dedicated amateur shows the experts the way. I hope his dog will be well.

The reporter had some doggy fun with the article, too:

62 F and very dark outside at 7 am.

The birds are all tweeting about the cold front today.  It is suppose to be 44 F in the morning and 36 F Tuesday morning.  A very radical change.

Going to jump in the truck and find a way to church.  Both of the bridges over the Brazos River have been closed all weekend with lots of confused drivers going nuts.

2025 Business tax returns are due on tomorrow, Monday, March 16.  I am hoping that my CPA gets them to me as we were working on them last Thursday.

Government reports and taxes never stop.  This is why I have a half time accountant on staff.

About 45F overnight here in the California high desert, but very windy (30mph) until about 2am.   So I couldn’t open windows and let the house cold soak overnight in advance of an 85F day.

A high pressure dome is going to park over southern California for the next week, eliminating any chance of rain, melting a lot of the mountain’s snowpack, and bringing June temperatures in March (10-30F over normal for this time of year).  Ughh.

Back is still killing me.   Don’t know what triggered it.   I was wearing new shoes all morning and did some standing around.   That can cause some knee and lower back pain if the shoes cause a difference in how I stand, but not usually like this.

72F and sunny, W says she got the day confused and the cold front is supposed to be tonight.   Oh well, it will or it won’t.

Weird dreams for me too.   Somehow we had sentient bears all of a sudden and I had to do a road trip with a juvenile bear…

I am going to try to loosen up a bit so I can get some stuff done, but first, coffee.

    @paul

Absolutely.    Right outta the deep freezer.  Probably 45 minutes of nuking to heat enough to eat.

    But it’s  a great plan.

No microwave–stovetop. Run some hot water over the bottom so you can dump the frozen chili into a saucepan. Start low to medium and move it around to the melting layer doesn’t scorch. I use a wooden spoon to flip it over and break it up as it thaws. If you’re hungry you can start eating the melting bits before it all thaws.

I’ve thought about putting a pint into a gallon freezer bad and laying that flat in a small (1/8) sheet pan in the freezer, then stacking them up. Just break off a piece when you need it.

Problem is usually eating the chili pot empty before I think of it.

What about making boiling bags? Put a serving of chili or whatever into a heavy-duty ziploc bag, pressing out all of the air. When you’re hungry, drop the bag into a large pot of water and bring to boil.

Note: I’ve never done this myself. I know that there used to be prepared food that was heated in water. I don’t know why it wouldn’t work on a home basis but could be missing something.

I microwave. For my portion size, takes no more than 9 minutes, in 3 minute sessions, breaking up or stirring between each session.

My main business is an S Corp.  The other business is a C Corp with a tax year that ends in April.

My father made everything as complicated as he could.  He had eight C Corp businesses at one point with almost 2,000 employees.

Nathan Fillion announced plans to bring back Firefly as an animated series. Everything is in place except a company that would produce it. Joss Whedon signed off on it and IP owners, too.

I’m not too excited about an animated series of Firefly. It would be lacking even with the original cast doing the voices. I think working out pay for the cast might sink it right there unless Fillion is asking the cast to do it at scale.

There are a series of graphic books on Firefly. I’ve never “read” them. I’m thinking the StarTrek:TOS animated series which bombed (I have the DVDs).

The marketing tagline: “No matter how much you eat, you always want to munch on more.”

The first Star Trek animated tv series was very good.  Log 1 through Log 10.  Came out in 1973 or so with the original cast voices.

The animated series was actually huge when it aired in the 70s. The problem was that the series skewed adult, and NBC wasn’t interested in providing the money to do the series properly.

Didn’t Larry Niven write an episode? IIRC, he was involved with “Land of the Lost”.

  24. Greg Norton says:

Yup. Niven did write an episode of the animated “Star Trek”.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Slaver_Weapon

    Another “Picard” reference.

The Rikers’ house in “Nepenthe” episode of “Picard” is the house from “The Great Outdoors”, located on the Universal backlot since John Hughes had it constructed for the film.

I have “The Great Outdoors” on my video backlog to try and figure out the references, particularly Troi’s line about the house being designed by “Retro prairie hipsters”.

That smells like a John Candy line.

“Top Gun Maverick” has at least two big references to Hughes’ “Uncle Buck” if you pay attention.

I knew the big one right away, but “Wave and smile” required rewatching the Hughes’ flick.

Oh. well.  So much for using Filezilla to add new music.  But I can  open 192.168.0.5 and shut down the Lyris server.  Then pull the plug on the Pi.  Connect the USB drive to my PC to transfer files.  It’s a bit clumsy but I’d still have to get into the Lyris settings to tell it to rescan the library.

I’m sure there is a file I can edit.  But that routine worked so well yesterday that I was told “root is locked”.

The cold front has arrived.  It was 92f and is down to 88f in about 20 minutes.   The wind will blow your toupee off.

I’m closing windows.  It’s 82 in the living room.  The forecast says 34f tonight.  So, trap the warmth.

I bought some “mild Italian” sausage links the other day.  HEB brand, raw meat, five to a package.  Over there between the fajitas and the steaks.  25% off.  I grilled them today.  Buddy the Beagle is quite sure he deserves a sausage and I must hate him because he hasn’t had any. Penny?  She just looks and goes on doing whatever she was doing.  My dogs crack me up.

Anyway.  Good sausage.  The case is edible.  HEB has some other sausages that taste good but I often seem to end up with a chunk of chewed up Saran Wrap  in my mouth.

Tomorrow’s supper is thawing.  A little bacon wrapped “filet mignon”.  It’s not, just a decent piece of beef.  Eight minutes in the air fryer.  Turn it over.  Add a handful of frozen french fries and another 12 minutes.  Maybe a couple more minutes to get the fries brown.  Dump it all on a plate.  Drippings and all.  Pat of butter on the steak while it rests.  Salt and pepper the fries.  A bit of Heinz 57 on the side to dip into.  It’s pretty good eating.

  31. paul says:

    “Try again with capslock pressed.”

    Yeah, tried that already.

    “Cold”.

It was below freezing when I went out to open up the chicken coop. Got up a little over 40F in mid-afternoon. 100% cloud cover all day, enough wind to make it unpleasant to be outside.

Tomorrow’s supposed to be worse. Clouds, rain, not much over freezing. Bleh.

The chickens would be glad to be under cover, if they weren’t ungrateful jerks. All they do is complain about being penned up like animals.

    Try WinSCP.

Coming back from a friend’s house tonight, made the mistake of going by the extra large muslim temple.  About a thousand cars were there and another thousand cars were trying to get in.   Ramadan.  There was a guy in bedsheet outside of it directing cars inside, trying to not get run over.

I will bet that all five of the muslim temples within 10 miles of my house are doing big business today.  I passed back the other temple just five miles from my house, they had the parking lot chains up and were turning people away.  Their parking lot was full also.

BTW, I am betting that the next mayors of Houston and Sugar Land will be muslims.

“Try WinSCP”.  Ok.  I don’t see a Mint version….  I’m pretty sure I had the option to enable SSH on the Pi.  It’s all a blur.

So the wind is blowing like crazy.  I opened the sliding door a few inches and it’s like standing in front of  a leaf blower.  I wonder where the air is going.

I suppose the bathroom vent fans  leak enough.   Not enough that I can see the vent louvers opening.  I’m pretty sure everything else is sealed up.

Electric outlets on outside walls have the foam gaskets.  For what ever good that does.  Over the years while doing fun stuff in the attic, I’ve stuffed tufts of insulation into every place I see romex going into a wall.

I have good windows.  I feel no drafts at all except for a little from the window over the kitchen sink.

The recessed lights are sealed.  Once I got the bulbs at the depth I wanted, I taped the holes with aluminum tape.  Two reasons.  Stop air leaks.  Stop scorpions from entering via the attic.

    Texas.  It’s great.

The front door is a bit warped.  I need to work on the weatherstripping there.

I’m just baffled.    Yes, I know the house has to breath.  I just want to know where it’s breathing.

Found the leak in the kids’ shower.   Had to open the wall in the hallway to see, and so it could dry out.  Two pieces of hardwood flooring will need to be replaced.  Once they bow, they never go back.

Had to clean out the old grout and caulk, and re-caulk.   White and clear.   24hours to cure so the kids will be using our bath tonight.

One trip to HD, and one lost tool.   It was a multi screwdriver I got for Christmas so I’m bummed but it’s not anywhere it should or could be.  I’ll probably find it with the lawnmower.

Changed out the LED flood light in the back yard for new LED lights.   20K hours my hairy butt.   One of the lights had started to flicker, and not come on reliably.

Small things but they were on the list.

I don’t know as I’d call a plumbing leak which resulted in warped floorboards and which required cutting open a wall a “small thing”, but maybe I’m just lazy.

One keeps challenging Congressman John Carter for the Republican nomination for the distrct covering Williamson and Bell Counties, but, even though Carter is a walking corpse, he brings home the pork spending at the big VA complex in Temple.

  48. nick flandrey says:

    I don’t know as I’d call a  …. “small thing”

    – well, put it that way, it is just that none of the parts of the problem was anything difficult.   Just tedious.  I cut a 2 gang sized hole in the wall to see if I could get my snake cam in there or see the issue, saw the wet concrete and soggy insulation, and knew I’d have to open it up to dry.   I pulled off the baseboard, and cut 5 inches of drywall away, the length of the tub, which let all the wet stuff breathe, and gave me access to reach up and figure out where the water was coming from.   It all seemed pretty unlikely, but when I had W spray the shower wall, and it came shooting out the wall I had open, I knew I found the issue.

Then it was just, scrape, clean, scrape, more scraping, grout saw on the sawzall, more cleaning, and rub some caulk on it.  My tube of clear silicone was gelled, so I had to do the HD run.   There are things you can’t stockpile, crazy glue and silicone caulks are among them.   They invariably ‘kick’ in the container at some point.

I’ll have to saw out the two flooring boards and replace them at some point, but it won’t be this week.  I don’t think I can get to the spare flooring, it’s buried pretty deep at my secondary location.  I might have a couple of short pieces in the garage attic, but I’m not counting on it.

I’ll have to do the same thing at the rent house to fix the termite damage- eventually.

DHS should put all TSA agents at Reagan Int’l on the regular lines and not staff any PreCheck or VIP services, forcing all the bigwigs, including congresscritters, into the long lines with the hoi polloi

Then do the same thing at airports in blue states. “Sorry, we are prioritizing limited resources.”
