Fri. Jan. 24, 2025 – weird week, glad it’s ending…

By on January 24th, 2025 in cooking/baking, culture, decline and fall

Cold, dry, and clear. Warming later. I hope. Easy to make predictions, harder to make CORRECT predictions… but warming would be nice.

So another day went by without a massive amount of backlogged tasks finally being cleared. I did manage some domestic bliss. And I put some more Christmas stuff away. Didn’t have any pickups, so I was actually home all day. Did have kid taxi duty, and that ate a few hours.

I had time to make dinner though. Lamb chops. Yum. I had the lamb from Costco to bag and freeze, but half of it had already spoiled. I’m taking that flat back to Costco. I had two flats, both same dates, both same shelf in the fridge, but one stunk. So it’s going back, probably later today. I decided to cook half the other flat for dinner and freeze the rest. Usually I grill the triangle chops, but it was cold out…

I seared them in my cast iron, in fat, oregano, basil, and rosemary, then added chopped baby potatoes, salt, pepper, and garlic salt. Cover and simmer with a bit of red wine, turning frequently until the potatoes were done. Remove meat and potatoes, make a red wine reduction with the pan drippings and voila’, dinner is served. Chops were medium rare to medium… and it was good. For bread I tried the new shelf stable baguettes from costco. They were pretty good, and are ready in about 10 minutes. We normally like lamb a bit more rare, but I felt better cooking them a bit more this time.

I’ve got a pork rib roast thawing for today or this weekend that I froze in 2018. I’m finally getting down into one of the chest freezers…

Today I’ve got an appointment with my eye doctor, and a couple of pickups to do. And of course, kid taxi later.

Not much time for more domestic bliss. I know what I’ll be doing this weekend…

That’s right, stackin’!!

Don’t be slackin’ (like me)

After he died she went to get the royalties transferred to her. The problem was…

I inherited a bunch of mineral rights. 1/32 of this quarter-section, 1/64 of that quarter-section. The smallest fraction is something weird like 1/104. All of this in the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle area. The income is maybe $200 or $300 per year. Wow.

For me, the inheritance was relatively painless, because my mother had prepared quitclaim deeds for all of it. I really ought to do the same for my kids, who will then inherit even smaller fractions. That would require me figuring out how to do quitclaim deeds, which doesn’t excite me a whole lot.

Anyone have a quick’n’dirty guide on how to set them up?

I bet that a lot of these mineral rights get lost over generations. Do the oil companies care? Probably not – if they can’t find out who to pay, I reckon they just keep the money.

Trump’s Executive Order – which puts diversity hires on mandatory leave

Trump is doing great so far. I enjoy reading the summaries of the actions he has taken each day. This is already encouraging similar movements in Europe, though Europe is still far behind.

It’s sad, but heinous crimes by illegal migrants are reinforcing things. Most recently, the two-year-old kid killed by a migrant in Germany – a migrant who was supposed to have been deported.

I do wonder about the “mandatory leave” for DEI types: is that just paid vacation? Can’t he just fire them?

  2. Nick Flandrey says:

Civil service is protected by unions and rules, and since they as a class make the rules, I’m sure they did  a good job of protecting themselves.   Paid leave is effectively vacation w/out using actual vacation time.

A system in the field now was sold with Hookers-n-Steaks marketing and not a lot of actual AI.

Someone knowledgeable in the school system may have raised their hand but been dismissed as being “on the spectrum”.

One of our Village Idiots at GTE is now CTO of one of the largest school systems in Central Florida, having ridden his wife’s coattails as she moved between various prestigious education admin jobs in the region for the last 30 years.

Idiot. Even at GTE, management hired him out of fascination with his wife’s job despite misgivings about his lack of experience and > 2 hour commute each way between Tampa and the Orlando Metro.

They’re entrenched and know how to work the system.

When we were in Wisconsin last year, I overheard a DEI consultant on the UW Madison payroll running down how the hiring process for her office worked with a group of co-eds in the seating area of the deli run by the Dairy School.

The consultant was kvetching that she actually had to look at some white male resumes to fill a couple of open slots she had in her group and that the girls, all white and pretty, would need to wait or have some intersectional qualification going to get bumped up in the line.

Clad in Athleta, head to toe, including her parka. I consider that a bad sign in academia.

The irony was that the coeds were spending time with the pinhead trying to get in on the grift full time before graduation while the Dairy students moved briskly through the area to/from classes and laboratories in the Sargento Wing of the building. I’m not kidding about the name.

The UW Madison program makes a credible claim to having built the Dairy industry in Wisconsin.

The EOs related to the Federal payroll are already starting to see political blowback. We’ll see how long they last.

Open positions at the VA in Austin are going unfilled, and the patients seem to have their members of Congress on speed dial.

The Congressman covering that district, Greg Cazar, “Gregorio Eduardo”, wants to make a run at the Senate next year against Cornyn.

Keep an eye/ear out for that name. Outside of Dallas and Baylor alum gatherings, who had ever heard of Collin Zachary (Allred) prior to last year, when he took on Rafael Edward (Cruz)?

Bad Actor: The Fate of Peter Daszak

A final report released in May 2024 by Chairman Brad Wenstrup of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic (SSCP) outlined significant violations by EcoHealth Alliance.  The report revealed that “EcoHealth repeatedly breached the terms of its NIH grant, routinely ignored government oversight requests, and failed to report dangerous gain-of-function experiments conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).”

According to the report, EcoHealth also submitted a required research report two years late. HHS cited these findings as key reasons for the formal debarment of both EcoHealth and Dr. Daszak.  The report emphasized that, given the strong likelihood that a lab-related incident involving gain-of-function research contributed to the emergence of COVID-19, EcoHealth and its former president should never again receive U.S. taxpayer funds.
