Sun. Feb. 2, 2020 – in the last couple of days I became aware of a sportsball game being played today

Cold and damp. [Cool at 51F and 99%RH at 830am]

Never warmed up much yesterday, although the sun was out and the sky was clear. Nice day after the gloom.

I had my swapmeet, and sold a few small things. I bought a couple of books, and hung out with the guys. Good day. Then did some auction pickups, and a bit of thrifting. I know. Hey, I only bought some music and puzzles. I’ll get hours of entertainment from that, and it doesn’t take any space.

It seems that there is a big sports event today. I’m serious that I only realized that yesterday. I have NO interest at all and I’m completely separated from anyone who does. If you like it, I’m not knocking you for it, but I haven’t got the slightest interest. If the weather holds, I’ll be cleaning the rat soiled shelves so I can get my food back indoors.

The KungFlu (I still like WuFlu, but I’m the only one who does while I’ve seen the Kung Flu appellation in many places) continues to infect people. In a couple of weeks we’ll finally have independent observations about lethality (hopefully not) and infection. But possibly by then we’ll have 1,000,000 chinese infected too. The effect on the global economy is going to be devastating. Even if everyone went back to work tomorrow, the economy would take a hit. Everyone isn’t going back to work tomorrow.

Plan and act accordingly.

  1. Going into the high 70s here in Oklahoma today before heading for possible snow later in the week. I will enjoy today while I can.
Have to pick up the MIL today for weekly lunch. I wouldn’t mind so much if it weren’t a 90 minute drive each way. I should be happy my wife’s mother is still alive and in fairly good health. She beat cancer last year and besides arthritis and loss of hearing she is doing okay.

We have a trip to SAMS planned for Tuesday to finish stocking up on meat and paper products. We have to plan ahead as the nearest SAMS is 90 miles away and the wife has dialysis Mon/Wed/Fri so our options are limited. I will take the suburban so we can carry a big load.

  2. The StupidBowl is today? I was unaware of that until moments ago. I knew it was going to be somewhere in the past couple weeks or next couple weeks, but that was the extent of my knowledge.

I’ve been trying to get people to use “Sweet and Sour Sicken” but have had no success.

  3. “I’ve been trying to get people to use “Sweet and Sour Sicken””

    –that’s a good one

  4. Ah, the new hospital is built from prefab connex boxes.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7957931/Inside-Chinas-coronavirus-hospital-1-000-bed-Wuhan-unit-open-patients-tomorrow.html

It’s a bit concerning that China has two plague hospitals built and ready to deploy on a couple days notice. I hope we have something similar, but I’m pretty sure not… we do have a civilian version of the old MASH unit, they deployed them here during the hurricane recovery, but I never saw a picture.

You can tell the hospital is purpose built due to the medical panel on the room walls, with all the hookups.

It’s pretty impressive to even assemble something like that in a couple of weeks. Getting it shipped there must have taken some time too. That means the decision was made before the press started talking about it, when there were far fewer cases. SOMEONE made the decision knowing it wasn’t going to get better….

  5. NYFC likely has a case

“While this is the first suspected case to hit New York City, it is the 12th in New York state.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office confirmed Saturday that tests had come back negative for eight of the cases and the other three are awaiting results.

The possible New York City case comes after the eighth confirmed case in the US was diagnosed on Friday and the global death toll was revised from 259 to a much higher 304.

A Boston college student was the eighth person to be diagnosed in the US. ”

—funny that the test hasn’t come back for the guy in TX…

  6. Well while I have little interest in the so called ‘Big Game’ it can be entertaining because of the ads and the food. Besides it is some left coast team fron Santa Clara involved so maybe I should pretend to root for ’em.

  7. Ah, the new hospital is built from prefab connex boxes.

Ok, so the hospital is a snap together. That still doesn’t solve the problems of adequate water supply, sewage, and enough power to run the 1000 bed facility. It’s easy to drop the parts in but running the utilities in a couple of days must have been a nightmare.

  8. Nick – this is the New London run by the Islamist mayor. The London that sneers at Trump and desperately wanted to be ruled by Brussels. The New London has become a cesspool of crime and violence. It was a nice, safe place when we lived there in the 90s.

  9. Yep, and you can be sure that it doesn’t really work. China is famous for the appearance being more important than the function. The whole place is a thin veneer over rubble.

    Metaphorically, and actually.

  10. and now a bit of social commentary— compare and contrast — two extremes

  11. and now, two more things that aren’t good.

ANOTHER Chinese city is put on coronavirus lockdown: Officials close roads into Wenzhou and tell its nine million citizens to stay inside

    — that city is about the same distance from Shanghai, a city of 22 million people last time I was there.

    and

Now China is hit by BIRD FLU outbreak: ‘Highly pathogenic’ H5N1 bug that can spread to humans kills 4,500 chickens on farm south of Coronavirus epicentre

–running out of excess capacity to deal with stuff.

  12. The news is all Super or Iowa Cacuses. Impeachment is just a blip, thankfully.
Maybe I’ll watch Ground Hog Day instead.

  13. I am celebrating Super Chicken Wing Day, got over 5-pounds at the ready, I may let the rest of the family have a few.

It’s also Super Commercial Day that will be interrupted by some hyper-T guys chasing balls and each other.

  14. We’re going to do wings in the air fryer. Did a trial run the other night and worked well.
In the past I’ve always seasoned them with salt/pepper/garlic/onion and grilled them outside. Then brought them in and applied the sauce.
Sauce for me is usually Frank’s Wing Sauce or the regular ‘I put that sh!t on everything’.
Not a believer in the weird variations. Wife often get garlic/parm (even the Italian in me really doesn’t go for that.)
Dip is always chunky blue cheese however more seem to want ranch nowadays. Some places they don’t even bring out bc unless you beg. Bah.
I plan to eat many today.

  15. Wife and kids joined some kids from school and are out to lunch eating TexMex. I like mexican and other south of the borders flavors, but don’t really care for TexMex…

    So I’m cleaning the garage.

    And watching the blogs….

  16. Chest cam and shoulder cam
    Earbud
    throat mic
2, maybe 3 radios (chest, belly, drop leg)
    pepper spray
    tazer
    handcuffs
    pistol in drop leg holster
AR pattern rifle w/single point sling, light, laser, aimpoint and magnifier

    No gloves
no spare mags (and loaded mag looks partially full)
    no IFAK (first aid)
    no ear pro
    no eye pro
    no clip knife
    Operator beard, check!

    Can’t read his insignia, but I’m curious….

  17. Nick – this is the New London run by the Islamist mayor. The London that sneers at Trump and desperately wanted to be ruled by Brussels. The New London has become a cesspool of crime and violence. It was a nice, safe place when we lived there in the 90s.

We lived in London in 1973. At age 12 I was riding the tube all over the place by myself. During the day of course. And was never accosted or harassed.

  18. Hmm. Two young women, neither of whom I’ve ever heard of. One appears to be somewhat underweight, the other of whom seems to be morbidly obese. And yes, I know that’s a clinical diagnosis, and I don’t know exactly how overweight in terms of % of body mass one has to be to meet it, but she is certainly putting her health at risk in a variety of well defined ways.

I don’t care about the teams involved in today’s football game. Neither do I care about the commercials, or the spectacle of the whole thing. If that makes me a “bad American” so be it.

  19. 31-year-old beauty was joined by her bikini-clad friends

Another fictional statement. The lady is ugly regardless of her mass. She could lose 200 pounds and still be ugly. Another waddler.

  20. Driving back from a quick trip to San Antonio this weekend for my wife’s birthday, we noted quite a stench emanating from underneath I35 as we drove through Downtown Austin near the homeless services building. This was the first upper 70s day in a while; I wonder what that stretch of road will smell like in July, once we get into the heart of the first summer with legalized street camping in the city.

Austin, densest Texas habitat of the Modern Urban Outdoorsman (TM).

  21. Funny you guys mention standards of beauty.

I was on the bus today idly watching the passersby and imagining which plastic surgery each woman needed. Nose job, jowl lift, eye job, &etc. Then one woman walked by and I immediately thought, “face transplant”.

  22. “I wonder what that stretch of road will smell like in July”

    El Paso.

Since moving here, the furthest point west we’ve visited is Fredericksburg. We’ve never been curious enough to venture out I-10 that far.

  23. Then one woman walked by and I immediately thought, “face transplant”.

That was my brother’s wife that walked by you.

  24. One young lady famous for who her father is (Johnny Depp) the other a “singer” with at least one current hit. Both held up to be the height of ‘enviable’ womanhood. One looks like Munch’s The Scream, the other is …

As the dad of two little girls I try not to comment or even think too hard about appearance, but the social dynamics at work currently are poisonous to humanity.

  25. Three reasons to believe the Wuhan virus is a bioweapon:

And why targeted on East Asians? Possibly no reason at all other than they were experimenting with genetic targeting and it was intended as a step towards a virus that could selectively target gweilos. Or Japanese. Or Indians.

But I can think of a blood-chillingly good reason for the Communists to keep a shot like this in their locker. And that reason is the island of Taiwan. Release the virus there, wait for it to do its thing, then when the Taiwanese are screaming for help offer humanitarian aid. Delivered by the People’s Liberation Army.

A minor epidemic would be big news in Taiwan.

The people still play You Ain’t Got No Ice Cream (my in-laws are from Taiwan) games which would complicate treatment, but the country has made a serious attempt over the last 30 years to establish “rule of law” democracy.

    Lizzo!

There was quite a media push in 2019 to get Oscar attention for “Hustlers”, and Lizzo was part of that. She got the musical guest slot for Eddie Murphy’s return to SNL along with being handed a bunch of industry awards.

Hustlers wasn’t that interesting. JLo was good, but Constance Wu should have kept her day job as the mother on “Fresh Off The Boat”.

  28. I just caught the second half of the half time show. I watch it because I have friends who work on it.

I didn’t recognize either woman singing, nor did I recognize any of the songs. Lots of crotch shots, p#ssy grabbing, ass shaking (assless chaps? Oh my.) And pole dancing. I can understand why people think these are the end times and Sodom and Gamorha got off lightly … What used to be rare and frowned over is now featured in the most watched show on earth.

  29. I assume the two women y’all were talking about yesterday were announcers for the Superbowl? If I may be non-PC (thank you for your kind permission), I would say that there is every reason to “fat shame” public personalities. Whether we want it or not, they do become role models for many people. Being seriously overweight should not be something we want to normalize, nothing you want to see in people that some will take as role models.

Of course, I haven’t seen even a fragment of a superbowl since I was a kid. I like playing sports, but never had much interest in watching them. I find it surprising, but Superbowl parties are actually pretty common over here 🙂

  30. nothing you want to see in people that some will take as role models

When it comes to the grossly overweight, you could have put a period after “see”.
