Sun. Feb. 17, 2019 – yard work, and kidsports

61F and maybe the sun will poke out?

Slept in this am. Needed it.

Lots to do, we’ll see what gets done. The news looks like it’s sleeping in too.

    Skipped this yesterday–

Now why would anyone feel like they should be armed at work?

(note that he was a prohibited person- guess we need more laws he could break, after all the first and oldest one didn’t work.)

That story will be gone early next week. The race of the shooter is … inconvenient.

We watched “Bohemian Rhapsody” last night. Despite the omissions and inaccuracies, it still works extremely well, especially Mike Myers.

One of the relevant bits left out is that Queen, with Freddie Mercury unsure of his voice, had to follow Sting and Dire Straits at the height of their respective powers.

Watch Sting and Mark Knopfler become rock gods.

Arg, it rained enough that all the surfaces are wet.

Sarah Hoyt has this to say, which rings loud in my head–

“I object to this holy crusade of the left that turns anyone who has less than you into a de-facto saint who needs to be championed, while you need to be tormented because you worked (or your ancestors did) to get to a level you consider acceptable.”

This sums it up for me and offers a view that I hadn’t quite internalized before.

    Gaah! I’m a Luddite.

    My concern(s):

    * There is essentially no security standards for IOT devices.
    * There are plenty of known vulnerabilities already.
    * People that innocently do things to/with their devices open them up to attack.
    * Were I to implement such a system, my family would love it. They would not understand it.
    * I’m the only one who does understand such systems. I am the single point of failure.

My desktop computer and phone are the only devices in the house that never have issues. Nobody is allowed to use my computer or phone, even to watch videos. Every other device, including phones & tablets, have issues if I let the kids touch them. Let them manage IOT? Not until it’s their headache.

It’s not the state actors I’m terribly worried about. It’s the script kiddies and Bulgarian hackers that are the biggest threat to my home. They’ll flick the lights for fun to make us nuts. Blast the radio in the middle of the night. Change the alarms to go off at a different time.

Further, there is no real value to automation for me. The TV remote is bad enough. I NEED to get off my duff to turn the lights on & off. The programmable (clock) thermostat is automated enough for us. When automation does something really useful I may feel differently. But Gee Wiz is not enough.

Side note – my boss went ape-crap-crazy when he got his garage door to close from work. He can watch it close from his phone as well. I didn’t have the heart to ask him about people hacking in.

I moved Jim’s comment about IOT and automation to today, as it was stuck in spam….

Yep. I have a standing rule of “if you get infected my cure is format c: /u”. It’s worked so far.

I thought the universal cure was rm -fr *

I suppose I could find a Linux boot disc. 🙂

Um, take a look at the gear this town has–

Oh no, there’s no militarization of the police….

About IOT devices and remote controlled stuff….. meh, not interested beyond having the TV and video disc players and the stereo having remote controls.

I don’t want my stuff on the ‘net.

I have X-10 stuff. It’s all going away when the next cleaning purge happens. The “brains” died and I’m not interested enough to get past the babes and pay what they want for a new controller. Sure, it was nice to have the porch flood lights on the EDC and feed shed come on at sunset, dim to 50% a couple of hours later and turn off at dawn. And a light behind the wood stove doing the same.

  13. Nick Flandrey says:

Is the x10 website still bright colors and flashing lights?? I’m afraid to even go look!

I’ve got a ton of x10 including cams and the dongle to automate it all from a pc. ‘course that would be a win98se pc……

_Fire and Fury (Endless Winter) (Volume 4)_ by Theresa Shaver
    https://www.amazon.com/Fire-Fury-Endless-Winter-4/dp/0995938164/?tag=ttgnet-20

Book number four of a four book nuclear apocalyptic series. I read the well printed and bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback. This may be the end of the series but, if there are more books then I will buy and purchase them.

It has been seven long years since the thousands of nuclear bombs dropped across the planet. Several hundred alone dropped in Canada when most of the population died of radiation sickness or exposure in the resulting nuclear winter.

Skyler and her family holed up in the remote army bunker built for a thousand soldiers but no soldiers made it to the bunker before the bombs dropped. Her father helped build the bunker and had his own hidden addition to it. But life is cruel in the new world and bad things happened to her parents. And then the soldiers moved into the main bunker when it was safe to travel outside again. And made Skyler and her brother slaves along with several other survivors.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars (12 reviews)

Forgot to mention that we and our friends went to the open house yesterday for the house with the very nice mother-in-law addition.
    https://www.har.com/702-Tori-Road/sale_73978411

The five acre property is nice but very dated. The train intersection a half mile away was not very intrusive as a train did go by while we were standing outside. The garage was awesome (the double door is an 18 ft door, not a 16 ft door). The mother-in-law suite was nice, needs updating with new carpet, etc. The original house has 7+ ft ceilings instead of 8 ft ceilings. I can put my hands flat on the ceiling with my feet flat on the ground. Unreal.

The big problem is the interface between the original house and the mother-in-law suite. There is a six inch step down from the old house to the suite. Very uncool for a wheelchair. The daughter has not been in a wheelchair for over a year now but, the future is always there. She lost 40+ lbs over the last year and that helped her joints immensely.

We will keep looking. Maybe we will find a one acre lot that we can build a house on with our particular needs. We are in no hurry. For instance, we might like to build something like one of these NextGen homes:
