09:40 – Barbara is in Winston today, running errands, having lunch with a friend, and then making a small Costco run on her way back up here.

The final season of Downton Abbey is now available on Amazon streaming. I was surprised the other night when Barbara suggested that instead of just watching series 6, we go back and rewatch it from the beginning. I have no problem doing that, of course. Downton Abbey is decent television. Not as good as the original Upstairs, Downstairs, but good enough to watch again. We’re interleaving it with another series we’re rewatching, HBO’s Rome. That series is annoyingly ahistorical, but at least it’s watchable and has much better dresses than Downton Abbey. We also have a lot of decent stuff queued up on Netflix streaming, including the latest seasons of Hell on Wheels and Peaky Blinders. We won’t run short of stuff to watch in the evenings, although Barbara is usually doing crosswords and I’m usually browsing the web or reading an ebook at the same time.

Speaking of which, I just downgraded my Fire HD7 from Fire OS 5.x to 4.x. Fire OS 5.x is better in most respects, but I simply can’t tolerate the fact that they’ve moved the navigation bar in landscape mode from the right of the screen to the bottom. The Home icon is in the center, and I’m constantly pressing it accidentally, taking me out of whatever website I was looking at and returning me to the home screen. All I really use this thing for is checking my own web site and checking webmail, so the new features in Fire OS 5.x are pretty much a who cares for me.

Ok, we all sort of ‘know’ that google manipulates search results, at least if we’ve been paying attention. After all, they put paid ads first, and their secret algorithm can be manipulated by SEO firms.

We also know that they censor results based on originating country, as required by those local jurisdictions.

And now we know that they are manipulating search results for “feel good” or very subjective reasons,

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-06-11/google-responds-allegations-its-search-function-favors-hillary-clinton

“The autocomplete algorithm is designed to avoid completing a search for a person’s name with terms that are offensive or disparaging. ”

So who determines what is “offensive or disparaging? ” And more worrying is that there is a mechanism built in to make this possible. What’s next for elimination? “inspiring and patriotic?”

This manipulation was not as important when the word “google” was not synonymous with “search online” but now it is.

Clearly google can’t be trusted except for the most trivial things.

I do use it as a spell checker and to check the meaning of words and phrases as well as to lookup quotes. However, google’s liberal/fascist bias is even evident there.

In the early days of the internet I used Infoseek. It started out pretty good then it got bought out and is/was used for all sorts of nefarious/self-serving purposes.

Trust but verify, but never trust a politician, they cannot be verified. 😉

I give “Hell on Wheels” a “B” and “Peaky Blinders” an “A-.” Westerns are a dime a dozen but it was a deuced good idea to do something out of the ordinary, i.e., post-Great War industrial Britain urban slag heaps and even at least a couple of veterans’ PTSD struggles, called “shell-shock” back then. This guy was a major pioneer in its treatment, at least for officers:

    But ya gotta start somewhere.

For a beautiful fictional version of that whole era check out Pat Barker’s “Regeneration Trilogy.” And of course the late Paul Fussell’s “The Great War and Modern Memory,” both highly recommended.

The best google replacement out there that I have seen is:
    https://duckduckgo.com/

I also like that they put my website as number 12 in searching for “process simulation”. Google has my website as number 104, totally worthless.
    https://duckduckgo.com/?q=process+simulation&ia=about

DuckDuckGo seems to be what google search used to be. Very plain and simple. That said, we have had our website email hosted by google for about four or five years now. Google docs is extremely well done and I appreciate that.

Maybe they should have been running the email on the Cankles server, since they apparently adore her no end and fudge their search engine in her favor. I wonder how much Brin and Page have given of their billions to the Klinton Krime family so far…

Now with more Cankles email shenanigans an email pops up marked C for Confidential. So much for The Queen Biotch squawking “there were no markings.” Of course, one libturd responded “it doesn’t matter Fox (reporting) if there were a million emails, there was no intent.” That is how stupid libturds are. They can’t even research what they are talking about. One commenter “I had a TS Clearance for 24 years. I’d still be in Federal Prison for what she did.” And, of course, nothing will happen to her. Even if she doesn’t win the election, millions will pour into the Klinton Krime Foundation for her and Huma’s use.

Those of us on this board who possessed various security clearances or still do, whether in the military, civvie gummint or in private corporations with gummint contracts, and I had all three, would have long since been thrown in the clink, probably for so many years that we’d die in there. Whether we’d violated the clearances by “intent” or not; they’d have thrown away the keys. And there are people NOW, serving time, for clearance violations, while that fugly lump of rat shit waddles around rich as Croesus, spewing venom and turning ordinary human beings to stone like Medusa.

As MrAtoz sez, even if she somehow loses the election or Trumpster is somehow removed from the equation, she’ll still have gazillions pouring in on top of the gazillions she and that other piece of walking rat shit have amassed over the decades through their various felony robberies, other thieving, rapes, and murders. They make the Mafia look like Sunday school teachers.

On the prepping front, I got my flammables cabinet painted. I’m treating the bottom tonight, and will give it a coat of truck bed coating. I’ve been using that when I recondition tool boxes, or anything that will sit on concrete or steel to steel. It’s pretty tough and goes on easy.

I took all my gas cans out of the various areas and put them together, and wouldn’t you know, I don’t think the one cabinet will be enough. I might just have to clean up the other. I was looking forward to the money from selling it, but if I want to get all my flammables out of the garage and cabinets, I’m gonna need more room.

I stopped by the Habitat reStore on my way back from an estate sale, and scored. I got 6 @ 400ft rolls of 550 paracord. each spool a different color, including camo, black, white, and orange/yellow. Each roll was $5. New. That’s about 1c/ft. Holy cow. I bought all they had and will go back during the week when they open some more donated pallets. They will have pallets of rope too.

I also got 6 dozen Tattler lids, and 8 dozen Tattler replacement rings. They were about half price.

Not much else in the sales this week. And not much prepping for me.

“And not much prepping for me.”

Ditto here; except as certain regular chores count as prepping, such as planting more tomatoes, looking at more veggies at one of the local garden centers for more planting, stacking firewood, raking up more debris from the yard, and continuing to develop meatspace relationships in the ‘hood and general AO.

Also sending my next-younger brother a link at Lynda.com where he can use my login creds to take a songwriting learning path, so he has a way of possibly generating income besides the usual shitty, part-time and temp gigs we’ve both had to take since regularly being laid-off and dumped from IT jobs. And also discussing with him via email what we might do for locating a fairly remote and rural retreat cabin or trailer to stock up a bunch of stuff and also have a place to get away to when stuff at home is getting wearisome, and/or to head for if and when SHTF and we can either stay and rebuild or simply grab a resupply.

Back to household scut and grunge stuff tomorrow and then Monday re-registering wife’s Saab and picking it up from the shop on Tuesday. Sizable dump run for Monday, too.

So obvious as to beggar the imagination; like “the emperor’s new clothes” fable again. The mob, however, willfully refuses to see it or acknowledge it, basic, raw truth and nature. This is the same deal, by the way, in street cop and soldier work, and I am a first-hand witness to both in my time.

Now how about if I, at 6’5″ and 245-255, shave off all my facial and body hair, grow my head hair even longer than it already is and perm it, and set about ID’ing myself as a womyn, and do some of these bar fights and MMA capers….they gonna refuse to see that, too, as I put genuine womyn in the ER and the morgue?

  12. nick says:

@spook, I don’t know if those are the pool chemical ones or not, off hand, but the pool ones are recommended for long term storage. Just add water and get regular bleach.

The thing to look out for is all the other junk they add in, biocides, fungicides, fragrance, etc.

in normal times, you can buy enough fresh bleach to meet your need. It lasts fairly long, and is cheap. Doesn’t take much either. As it ages, the potency decreases, but you can add more for effect.

there’s a formula, but it assumes 5% bleach strength. I cheat and just over chlorinate, adding until there is a faint persistent chlorine smell. When I use the water I run it thru a brita filter for taste. Drank some that had been in storage in an aquatainer for 7 years, and it was perfectly fine. Drank most of the 7 gallons.

Anyway, during the ebola scare when it was clear you would need LOTS of bleach, I got the bags of pool crystals. Haven’t used them, don’t actually remember where they are offhand. I guess I should find them and organize my PPEs, since that woman in LA got sick. Funny that we never hear any follow up…

    >> The thing to look out for is all the other junk they add in, biocides, fungicides, fragrance, etc.

Yeah, I’m extremely sensitive to “fragrance” chemicals, which are basically
deadly in my book (and imho dangerous to all living things).
There is a fragranced version of these Clorox crystals; would not dream
of that; not sure that “original scent” is not a fragrance, though.
This stuff is meant for laundry and such…
This stuff also has NaCl, as well as the active ingredient, both in proprietary
amounts, but nothing else is claimed (for the “original scent” version).

    Repeat: sodium dichloroisocyanurate dihydrate,
    Clorox Control Bleach Crystals.

Anyway, it was “new!” and on sale and I grabbed it, months ago, but I am just
now finding info. Seems like it might have good shelf life (unopened, with
    added wrap).

Seems that regular bleach in excess could not hurt much, if you let it perc
for a while and then just air it out. If there are significant organic molecules
in the raw water, though, you get, uh, whatever those nasty chlorinated
substances are (with, at best, long-term cancer risk).

And… I think Mr. RBT pointed out that olde Clorox in brown glass jugs
had extra-good shelf life. My observation is that the white plastic jugs,
at best, are translucent (to whatever wavelengths) and might degrade
the bleach (to HCL & NaCl, iirc) more rapidly.

Anyway, guess I should try some of the Clorox Crystals for normal
bleach purposes and see how it does. It was just a prep / hoard
    thing that I hadn’t followed up on…

    thanks !

shave off all my facial and body hair

Eh? Why would you need to do that? Just self-identify as female and all those irrelevancies just disappear.

Pro-tip: make sure to self-identify as female when getting auto insurance, so you can get better rates.

  15. OFD says:

“Just self-identify as female and all those irrelevancies just disappear.”

Good point; and it would be a real long and tedious hassle to shave off all that hair anyway.

“…make sure to self-identify as female when getting auto insurance, so you can get better rates.”

Easily done, as it can all be accomplished online these days, just in case doing it F2F has any old fuddy-duddies at the DMV still thinking in terms of that stupid two genders or two sexes or whatever the eff it is.

Got any feedback on just using simple steel trash cans for flammables
    storage?
I can recall flammables cabinets that had advantages, like screens for flame
    resistance, whatever…
Am I crazy to store a little gasoline (in plastic jugs) and a little propane
(small green bottles) and some kerosene jugs in separate tin trash cans?

I guess I mean, hey, what are the basic principles of flammables
    storage? I need a refresher course…

  17. Ray Thompson says:

I store all my flammables in a separate building along with the mowers, weed eater, chain saw, pressure washer, and tiller. No gasoline or anything flammable is allowed in the garage or the house. (Except for the frequent flatulence.)

I’ve heard that in certain nightclubs in Bangkok you can pay to watch young ladies set their farts on fire. Of course, OFD probably has seen this live… 🙂

  19. Robert Bruce Thompson says:

    Re: sodium dichloroisocyanurate

Sure, you can use this. In solution, it releases free chlorine, just like a hypochlorite salt. I prefer to use calcium hypochlorite (pool shock), like this:

    https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WLWMLQG

I keep six one-pound foil pouches on hand, which is enough to sanitize a lot of water.

Incidentally, all those recommendations of using x number of drops of 5.25% chlorine bleach per gallon are just rules of thumb. Chlorination is much more complicated, because the amount needed depends on the water being treated. Free chlorine is extremely reactive, and is consumed by those reactions, not just with microorganisms, but with some chemicals present in the water.

Nick has the right idea. Overchlorinate, making sure there’s a detectable chlorine odor in the treated water. Then allow the water to sit in a pail or other wide-mouth container, exposed to air, for several hours or overnight to allow excess chlorine to dissipate.

I tried to donate and get my official woman card, but when I filled in $0.01 and clicked to continue it told me the amount must be at least $1. Fuck that. There’s no way I’m giving Clinton an entire dollar.

  22. OFD says:

“There’s no way I’m giving Clinton an entire dollar.”

Too late; she’s already gotten a bunch of your dollars, via the time in the WH, the time as SecState, and of course, through some convoluted route, her various slush funds and “foundations.”

  23. SteveF says:

Try entering -$100,000,000. If all goes well, you’ll get your woman card, impoverish Hateful Hillary’s campaign, and nicely fund your retirement.
