I picked up a couple of things.
I got a Katadyn pump style pocket water filter, from the thrift shop. It needs cleaning and an o ring. It’s big enough that it will live here at home and one of the smaller hiker filters will move to the truck. Or maybe it will live in the truck.
Picked up a literal sack of accessories and plastic parts at a semi-permanent yard sale. Most were new in box, although the boxes were trashed. Very helpful to have a drawer full of parts.
Working on the food storage area. I’m putting everything in big plastic bins. It will keep down the effects of any further rodent problems (rusty cans, etc). I’m going to pickup some more bulk at Costco today. Ordered and received some augason farms #10 cans and some keystone meats to try. Took some paper goods to the offsite location. Maybe the new filter will live there…
Restocked some OTC products and some hygiene and cleaning stuff, bigger boxes, and more of them. Stacking them higher.
Signed up for another local cop class, this time with the city PD. If accepted, that should give me a bunch of stuff to think about. I already used the info from the PIP meeting to identify 3 apartment complexes that were hotbeads of gangs, drugs, sex, and murder. And found a couple of new to me online tools related to crime and police activity.
Looking back, I’m getting out of the house a LOT more, with actual contact with local .gov and services. I’m also going to fewer sales, but more thrifting. Hum…

Hospital called yesterday to see how my wife was doing. My wife was doing OK, moving slow, but moving. The wife said she was in pain and the hospital, damn their hides, said it would get worse and stay that way until Sunday. After hanging up the wife was barely moving and indicates her pain level increased and is taking the Oxycontin. I suspect this would not have happened if the hospital had not called. Maybe there is some legal reason they need to call but it set my wife’s recovery back.
Or maybe I am just being a donkey anus and this is really how it goes. I just find the timing suspicious.
I’m beginning to think the tin foil crowd might be on to something. There has to be SOMETHING in the food or water contributing to this… it can’t be just social acceptance and trendy-ness…..

Nothing so benign as that. It’s social pressure, telling a young man “It’s okay to feel like a girl. In fact, if you feel like a girl, we’re going to FORCE YOU TO BE A GIRL.” With that kind of social pressure, even slightly confused kids who would grow up to be normal, productive, happy fathers will instead grow up to be confused, unhappy, suicidal trannys.
@ray, I was surprised how effective regular tylenol was post surgery. I even took only the recommended dose, instead of automatically increasing it. It doesn’t ‘come on’ as quickly, and of course it doesn’t have the other noticeable effects, so I didn’t quite believe it was working until I did a self assessment.
Your wife’s mileage may differ, but I encourage anyone worried about opiates to give it a try. (assuming no liver trouble or heavy drinking. You really must avoid alcohol when taking tylenol or aleve.)
That said, if she needs pain management, then use the tools available. Possibly try half doses, or stretch the time in between. Talk to a Dr of course, as I’m not giving medical advice, just sharing my own experiences.
From a prepper standpoint, having some good painkillers around (stored securely) isn’t a bad idea.

RE: Opioids Pain Killer – When I fell off a cliff in California and broke my arm, my own stupid fault, I was given Hydrocodone to help with the pain. It was GREAT !!! When I was hurting so bad I couldn’t sleep of even think straight, those little pills made everything bearable. I would sit there in the recliner, I was unable to lie flat for weeks, and be a happy lump. I can see how people could easily become addicted to that calm, easy feeling.
BTW: When they rolled me into the ER right after the accident, they gave me morphine (my first time). It not only took away the pain but made me very happy. I was flirting with the nurses right in front of my wife. I didn’t care about anything. I believed that I had simply dislocated my shoulder and when they showed me the X-Ray of the very obvious break, I laughed. It seemed the funniest thing ever.
PS: I don’t drink. Not for a religious reason but as a pre-teen I tried and discovered I hated the taste. But in my late teens some “friends” decided to slip something in my soda. I got drunk. I discovered I am a MEAN drunk. I badly wanted to break things and hurt people. Turns my personality around 180 degrees. Opioids had a very different effect.

Same old thing — the schools get extra money for students with special circumstances, but they’ve diagnosed every kid possible with ADD and real problems like Aspbergers or Dyslexia. Its just the next thing to justify more money.
I’ve seen a lot of the T part of LGBT working in tech. It seems to correlate to a high IQ and ranges from simple clothing curiosities to full blown dysphoria. However, among the general population, I’d put the number at no more than 1%, probably a lot less. The schools should make sure the small percentage of genuine cases are protected from physical harm but certainly don’t need to be involved with dispensing drugs or pushing borderline cases over the line to justify a budget.
A common theme I’ve picked up talking to others about growing up in The South is that every decent-sized high school graduating class below the Manson-Nixon line has at least one full-blown dysphoria case. Maybe it is in the water. Our class had Kevin who became Laurie from what I understand. Interesting trivia — however it doesn’t affect me any more than the guy in our class who zero-pointed The Citadel, and he’s perfectly “normal”.

The secret to any pain medication is to take it BEFORE the pain becomes unbearable. I don’t mean before you feel any pain but at the first sign of pain.
You also have to be honest with yourself, is it “really” pain? Consider tracking pain level in your daily journal (what? you don’t keep one?).
I am a Type II Diabetic using pills and long-acting insulin. I have also been on a long term chronic pain medication regimen of hydrocodone (20+ years). I test my blood sugars three times a day (on waking, before lunch, and before dinner); I record my glucose reading, general feeling (okay, tired, hot, cold, agitated, mellow, stressed, etc.), pain level (1 to 10) and if it is general or specific. In between, I’ll also record my pain level and feeling if it changes before my next glucose test.
My doctor finds my record keeping invaluable in my diabetes and chronic pain management.
The whack-a-does who want to eliminate all pain medication (no it isn’t just opioids) use fake studies, just like global climate change. Sure there are people who have a problem with addiction (all forms: nicotine, alcohol, “drugs,” etc.), psychological and physiological. But why persecute the doctors who treat responsibly and patients who act responsibly?
The way things are going regarding medicine, I see the day coming soon that I do not have a doctor who I can call my own. I’ll be seeing some immigrant doctor (with a degree from some unknown school, who barely speaks English) and not only will I lose my pain meds, but I’ll also lose my effective Diabetes Treatment. Dirty little gooberment secret is they consider Diabetes (yes, even Type I) a self-inflicted disease unworthy of effective monitoring, treatment, and medication. This also applies to chronic pain.

I think kids being unhappy feeds into the trans nonsense. They have lots of reasons to be unhappy… addiction to porn, lack of physical contact, lack of emotionally satisfying relationships, addiction to damaging social media, broken families, poor economic outlooks, frustration with female dominated schools and teaching styles, the cognitive dissonance of the pc and diversity culture, constant SJW agitating, outrage culture, victim culture, whatever.
Then they are told that maybe they’re unhappy because of sex or gender issues. It has the added bonus of getting them attention and approval. So they give it a try. Then they’re stuck. Still unhappy, unable to go back to ‘normal’ due to the approbation and social pressures, so they push on farther and farther. People that get into extreme sexual behaviours often take the same path.
I think there is some other component too, chemical or biological. Maybe it’s Gaia’s way to reduce population size? Get too many people too close together and they start expressing non-reproductive behaviours?

I’ve written before that my wife’s job outside Vantucky remains unfilled. The clinic attempts to compensate with nurse practitioners, midwives, physicians assistants, and graduates from The Phillipines. They also rotate students from the new WSU med school through the clinics.
They’ve tried everything … except money. God forbid. The senior partners like the class system just the way it is — they live on Prune Hill while newer partners can’t afford houses with luxuries like all bathrooms having plumbing connections.
Diabetes? The clinic tried a pilot program deputizing Fred Meyer pharmacists to monitor and prescribe things like insulin and birth control, but none of the remaining doctors signed off on putting their license at stake.

This is exactly what we found when we moved to the UK and were on the NHS. Our ASSIGNED doctor was a Pashtun gentleman who spoke no English. You could only see him when a translator was available and that was hit-and-miss. Several times we called to get an appointment for our sick kid but were told the translator was unavailable today so he will not be seeing patients. Like many locals, we fell back on our local “chemists” pharmacy to diagnose and treat simple illness with over-the-counter medicine. This doctor took my wife from a pre-diabetic to full blown Type-2 in a year with his horrible treatment. When we moved to Hong Kong, her doctor there, a wonderful English guy, told us that another year of NHS mistreatment would likely have killed her.
RE: NHS – I went to a London Dentist who told me that I was crazy to use NHS dental treatment. He said “You’re a Yank, go back to the US for a visit and get decent care” .

I am no great fan of the way in which the NHS is setup and operated, but my experiences and those of others I know, whilst in no way continuous perfection, are generally good (better than acceptable) standard. In particular I was surprised to hear about the non-English speaking GP, I understood that an English language test was a pre-requisite for practice and I have never heard of such a situation myself. How long ago was this experience – perhaps the NHS have improved their recruitment?

Also, the bankruptcy and liquidation of the bridal chains and smaller department stores up north has dumped a lot of merchandise, particularly clothing, on EBay which may have inventory control tags but is far from new — floor samples, dead stock sitting in storage for decades, returns which were never processed. A question for you guys, I have used Quicken to keep track of my personal finances for years, not updating until they threatened to discontinue things like downloading from bank accounts, etc. I have been using Quicken 2016 and they are planning to cut off the downloads the end of April if I don’t upgrade to 2019. I was prepared to do this until I noticed the price they gave was per year. So my question is what do you recommend to replace Quicken?

I have been a Quicken user since about that timeframe. Was a beta tester for the product, their top tester for one release. But when MS came out with MSMoney I changed to MSMoney as it was a better product. When MS abandoned MSMoney I had to revert back to Quicken.

I have not found anything better than Quicken for my needs. The GNUCash and Mint all fall short in my opinion. And I am no fan of having my financial stuff on their servers.

I just saw on the local news that the Austin PD is going to try using vests instead of belts to carry their “stuff”. Because of back pain. Their job is soooo physical what with getting in and out of their cars.
They had a honcho for the Lake Worth PD (around Ft. Worth? No clue.) and he said his belt of equipment weighs 22 pounds and the vests really help. Ok, I bet they feel great in the Summer.
What the heck are the cops toting? They really need to haul 22 pounds of stuff? I can see a couple of pounds for a Glock and add on a couple more pounds for an extra mag and a walkie-talkie. Cuffs optional, ty-wraps mostly work and weigh nothing.
All of the cops in the news clip are what I would call “fat”.
When my back acts up it’s because I’ve been slouching in a chair too much and not doing any sit-ups or push-ups. Five of each a few days a week works for me.
But, still, 22 pounds of equipment?

Sitting in the car with all that crap, and the vest is VERY awkward and does in fact hurt.
One of the benefits of doing the class is seeing the gear in use… and wearing some of it. It’s heavy.
I wore my IIIA vest, my G17, a retention holster, and NO extra mags. It was difficult to sit in my big Expy, crap was poking me in the back and kidneys, and the stiff vest was affecting my seated posture. Most of the guys have their cuffs in the small of back position, which constantly presses on your spine.
I’ve had jobs where I was carrying a multitool, flashlight, and multiple radios on my belt. 3 radios when I was in Vegas. It wears you down.
The .mil went to load bearing vests and suspenders long ago.
I’d vote for them carrying less, but I don’t think it’s possible.

As I understand it, genuine gender dysphoria is vanishingly rare – fractions of a percent. My impression is that a lot of people with mental problems – depression, or worse – grasp at the latest trend and declare themselves transgender. The suicide rates are massive, especially after transition, which may indicate that they thereby dig themselves a hole they can’t get out of. There ought to be nothing trendy about a severe birth defect. The people who have pushed to make gender dysphoria trendy have a lot of blood on their hands.
As far as societal acceptance goes: I’d like to think that people treat each other as individuals. If I work with person X, their sexual preferences and personal medical issues are not my business. Unless we become friends outside of work, I don’t need to know, and I don’t want to know. This also means that person X has no business shoving their personal issues into the workplace. I object to flamboyant gays just as much as I object to women who wear sexy dresses and tons of make-up. Neither has any place in the office.
