Sat. Oct. 6, 2018 – no rest for the wicked

By on October 6th, 2018 in Random Stuff

74F and just slightly less than saturated. Yesterday was nice everywhere I went. There were some clouds and a light quick smattering of rain in a couple of places but I managed to avoid all the downpours.

Today we have a soccer game. Not many practices were actually held due to rain and availability of the coach, so it should be interesting to see what the girls do.

Completely unrelated, just when I started actually using google assistant on my phone regularly (google, navigate to 123 Main St, Anytown, TX) they changed something. Now the stupid thing always wants to send me via public transit, and of course fails to find a route most of the time. That command USED to search the address and open the nav app, and START navigation, all at once. It was great for use while driving. Something broke dangit.

If it’s useful and working, DON’T FIX IT.

Another example is the swype keyboard replacement. It used to be uncannily accurate. Now it gets almost every word wrong, and in really stupid, low frequency word choice, ways. I find it much easier and more accurate to use the dragon Speech to Text input method. Other than a lack of punctuation, it is about 99% accurate.

Tell me what you did to prep this week….

I’ve been at the California Latino School Board Association conference in Del Mar, CA for two days. The State Superintendent of SB’s is the opening keynote. He starts with “We must resist the corrupt and criminal tRump administration. Resist! Resist!” Geez. Surpisingly, only about half the room rose their arms and chanted. He also promotes “English is not the only language.” He’s an old White Dude who probably doesn’t even speak Espanol. I can’t even discuss political issues at these things for fear of getting a shiv in one of my kidneys.

I better start practicing my “Viva La Raza” chant to get out of here alive.

Hey CoolTools is still around?? They were one of the koolkids of the fairly early web!

Glad to see a site more than 5 years old.

(I ordered some vetbond from somewhere, I found it during the office cleanup.) I’ve been using superglue to fix cuts and seal open wounds for years. It’s an old trick of rock climbers. Most of the glues today aren’t as good as the old days, and the repairs rarely last a day. The main drawback to using superglue is that it is rigid and skin flexes, so the repair ages quickly. The secondary drawback is it BURNS LIKE FIRE. For a little while at last.

    I haven’t tried the vetbond.

Del Mar sure is nice, what hotel are you at? I used to work corporate training all thru that area.

Today I’m not feeling as “goofy” as yesterday afternoon. I’m more tired and a bit nauseous. This antibiotic makes a weird taste in your mouth, and my pee smells terrible.

added- the swelling seems to be reduced and the heat is MUCH less although still hotter than the surrounding skin. Seems to be working.

Hilton Del Mar. We ate at Poseidon On The Beach last night. Good food, right on the beach during the sunset.

    Viva La Raza!

  10. Nick Flandrey says:

Nice, I used to do a lot of work at the Del Mar Racetrack. Lived a few miles south of there near the SD Airport. Lived in Pacific Beach for a couple years too.

    Miss the weather.

Until Robert Francis O’Rourke, a 4th generation Irishman became “The Mexican Bobby Kennedy”, the biggest ensconsed crocks in Central Texas politics were the Castro brothers, one the former Mayor of San Antonio/HUD Secretary and the other a Congresscritter for the district.

The Castro brothers, scions of the La Raza cofounder, champions of Hispanic causes, do not speak Espanol.

Spoken in a ballroom of a hotel in Del Mar, probably sitting at a table bussed by an illegal with illegal gardeners working outside and an illegal housekeeper making the bed upstairs.

Oy Cool Tools! Haven’t seen that in years.
Reminds me to tell Nick and all you preppers to have a good stash of tampons in your Med Kit. Good for more than the monthly curse…

In case anyone gives a sh1t, I ran my experiment this morning in re microwave vs. stovetop.

I know for a fact both draw 1250 watts, so I tried to keep things equal as could be. Mass of both containers were equivalent, temp steady (170° F) and the same.

Added 500 ml of dihydrogen monoxide at equal temp to both and put them to the flame.

Stovetop pan was a fraction (¼ inch in diameter) smaller than burner but both started at the same time.

Results? Microwave in glass jar took 3 min 04 sec to reach rolling boil (there was marble in there to act as a boiling chip)

Stovetop pan took 3 minutes 50 seconds to reach rolling boil (marble in there as well)

So…. It looks as though they came out fairly equal.

I still want to know how an induction cooktop under the same conditions would perform.

The problem with the one I bought here was that for some damn reason it didn’t like my CAST IRON pan… some damn safety feature designed to protect us from ourselves, as well as hire a bunch of paper-pushers to insure we don’t do anything stupid.

New Skin Liquid Bandage might be a good (and cheaper!) alternative to super glue for minor scratches and cuts. I usually paint a little iodine tincture on the skin first.

  15. Nick Flandrey says:

I used the old formula liquid skin to cover cuts and scrapes for working in the kitchen, but it wasn’t much of a glue. Has that changed?

    n

  16. Spook says:

New Skin Liquid Bandage is not much of a glue for closing a wound. It’s just a coating to protect. Touchy things like paper cuts and chapping splits are handled well by it. It might be possible to pinch a small but sort of deep cut together and hold it with the stuff, giving it time to dry. Extra coats painted on help. It lasts for two or three days on a fingertip, at least if you are not doing much work!

  17. Spook says:

This is a good time to remind everybody about butterflies and other tape “sutures” which can close some pretty bad cuts and wounds.

I am not sure that I will be able to stand the nonsense when Trump appoints Amy Coney Barrett to replace Ginsburg. The dumbocrats will probably accuse her of molesting girl scouts and other horrible items.

I am wondering how crazy Tuesday, Nov 6, 2018 is going to be at the polls. We may see active protesting around the nation at polling stations. That is riot police time with the batons and shields out for the crazies.

I advise voting early this year.

But wouldn’t that require Garland to “transition”? 😉

The fascist anti-fascists have always resorted to violence. The shooting war has already started. Ask Scalise. “Scalise was shot by a left-wing activist[4][5] on June 14, 2017, at a baseball practice for the congressional baseball team in Virginia, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.[6][7]”

Ask Rand Paul (who got attacked by his neighbor.)

This is an age of manias, and we’re gonna see the mob call for blood on more than one occasion.

Remember that no one had any problem with Kav while he was on the SECOND highest court….

At some point in the last few days, I saw a long article on Ginsberg’s road to the Supreme Court. A little revisionist history — no word of her husband’s asscociation with Ross Perot.

Ginsberg sits in the political payola seat on the modern court. She replaced Byron White, appointed by Kennedy as payback for White’s help with the 1960 campaign in Colorado.

Ginsberg’s replacement will be payola of some kind. She’s going to hold out so she can give the chair to a Democrat President to fill.

We get to early vote here in Fort Bend County from Oct 22, 2018 to Nov 2, including the full weekend at most places. There are about 21 early voting places. I’ll be voting at the assisted living center close to my house. There is a 90 year old lady handing out cookies as you leave.

And Kavanaugh has been affirmed to SCOTUS by the Senate with a 50-48 vote. Murkowski voted present. Traitor.

Murkowski has an axe to grind against the Republican party. Not only did her father lose a primary challenge to Sarah Palin, but she lost one Republican primary challenge (2006?) and only retained her seat by running as a write-in.

I heard an interesting theory out of the San Antonio station drive time host yesterday that the Left Coast liberals like Feinstein wanted the seat to stay vacant for the next two years so that 9th circuit stupidity didn’t get overturned. A 4-4 tie in the Supreme Court means that the lower court rulings stand. Murkowski came under a lot of pressure from the liberals.

  29. nick flandrey says:

Typical hypocrisy of the left, they’re all crying about a partisan court. They had no problem with it when they held the majority.

Lots of mergers and silent layoffs going on.

    @MrAtoz

I read your comment about combining an induction cooker with a pressure cooker. That sounds like a wonderful combination! Unfortunately my pressure cooker is stainless steel with an aluminum clad bottom. It’s Indian, and a very old and almost beautiful industrial design. I think they have a fancy, newer version which ended up at MoMA, but I like this one better.

    https://www.amazon.com/Hawkins-Stainless-Steel-Pressure-Cooker/dp/B002MPQH94?tag=ttgnet-20

I’ve always wondered if anyone makes flat iron discs that you can put in a stainless steel pan in order to use an induction cooker? I guess they incorporated some iron into the newer designs but mine is old and doesn’t work on an induction cooktop.

If I had to buy another one I would go one size up to a 5 liter, just to make canning easier.

BTW, I found the specs to my electric stove and that burner is actually 1500 watts, so all things being as equal as I could get them, the microwave is more efficient.

Handy Household Hint: if you’re just boiling water to steam something add a teaspoon or two of vinegar to the water to prevent mineral deposits building up on the stainless steel. So far as I can tell, it doesn’t affect the flavor.

As I’ve written about before, the Oscar people have a new category this year, “Best Achievement in Popular Films”. They may as well have called it “Best Achievement in ‘Black Panther’ Films”.

If the Progs fail to take both houses in the midterms, the circus will start Oscar night.

Though, I still believe SeaOrg is busy with plans to pull off a “Mission Impossible” surprise in the category. The film is good enough to win.

Some data. The “generic ballot” poll results for female likely voters has gone from D+14 to D+1 since the fracas in DC started. The results for suburban women is still somewhat higher, but also closing.
