Of course, with me having ‘taken to my bed’ I can’t really complain if I wasted the nice days and now have less than nice days to do what I need to do. I will anyway. Complaining about the weather is a universal right.
Since I’ve been ignoring my, well, everything for the last several days, I’ve got some catching up to do even if I’m not 100%. One of those things is picking up an 86″ monitor and getting it back to my shop. Yeah, that’s a big motha, and it’s industrial build quality so it’s heavy too. I’ve got a couple of other pickups to make this week and my client needs a troubleshooting visit too.
My ability to do anything next week is constrained. More on that later, but I have a couple of things that I need to do this week.
And there is always more to do, even if I kept up with the list, which I haven’t.

Education majors have nearly the lowest SAT scores of any college major. Fields with lower scores than education are not college degrees – things like agricultural operation, construction trades, security services, etc.. The one exception I see: “ethnic, culture and gender studies” rank lower then education, and I suppose those are college degrees. Supposedly.
The “best and brightest” are not the ones educating your children.

Exactly 15 dozen eggs in the downstairs fridge. It’s that low only because I gave away 4 dozen last weekend. The hens continue to lay more than we eat unless I make an effort to eat a lot of eggs. At the moment, I have too much cooked food in the fridge and need to focus on eating that before it goes bad. I’d expected The Child to drive down and get a week’s supply of baked chicken thigh, er, rice and meat casserole, I guess – can’t think of a better name for it – and homemade rolls.

Filled up my two gas cans that I use for the lawnmower. 12 gallons total. The mower actually holds 7 gallons as it is a commercial mower. I can mow about 5 times before having to fill the mower. The cost, for the unleaded stuff, was almost $60.00, a tad over $5.00 a gallon. I will have to do one more trip to the fuel station this summer. Of course I apply treatment to all the gas, marine stuff.
My Caseta (by Lutron) dimmable light switch in the kitchen bit the dust. It lost the ability to run at anything other than 100% several months ago. That was not a big deal as we run it at 100% when being used. Today we told Alexa to turn off the kitchen light, and the lights went to 10%, and stayed at that level. Manually flogging the switch did nothing, so dead switch.
Off to Home Depot for a new switch. Easy to install, 3 wires; line, load and ground. No neutral required which is one of the reasons I use the product as I have no neutrals in my light switches as they are generally load loops rather than from the source. The switch is expensive, $60.00.
The most difficult part was deleting the old switch from the Lutron app and the Alexa app. Then the switch had to be added to the Lutron app, then the Alexa app. I had to go through all my Alexa routines and add the Lutron switch back into the routines. I have multiple routines that control several lights. Alexa will also turn the lights on 29 minutes after sunset and off at 11:30 PM if we are not home.
I will probably remove the dimming light in the basement apartment which is located by the entrance door. I will replace it with another Lutron switch with the remote. The remote will be placed by the other entrance to the apartment. As it is now, I have to walk across the room to turn on the light. A second switch would make sense. A remote, that attaches to the wall, would be easy as no wire to run which would be required for a two-way light switch.
Current versions of the electrical code require a neutral in the switch box specifically because of the computerized and dimming “controls”. Still, probably 90% of residential and commercial in the US doesn’t currently have a neutral in the switch box.
It’s part of the move away from independence, simplicity, repairability, reliability, and low cost. Think about incandescent lighting. ANY country that could pull a vacuum, melt sand to glass, and extrude wire could make their own light bulbs. Those bulbs would run on AC, DC, and pretty much any voltage you could generate. Now all LED lighting is made in China, using chip fabs, complicated processes, and proprietary knowledge. They require specific and stable power sources to run, and often very sophisticated control systems either on the bulb, in the fixture, or externally. The whole process depends on a global supply chain.
Incan lights needed power, conductor, and a means to connect. They don’t even really need switches, as plenty of people in the third world just twist wires together to control lighting.
Modern lighting in the US, especially commercial, doesn’t even switch loads, the ‘switch’ just signals a controller, which signals a light fixture causing it to do something. LOTS of complexity at every step. LOTS of embedded and usually proprietary knowledge. Lots of ways for things to go wrong. VERY little that can be repaired, and when the system is obsolete, it’s Rip and Replace for the whole thing, not just the failed component.
I worked in the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Beach in San Diego. The story was that Edison himself helped with the electrification of the hotel, and I saw with my own eyes conductors in use that were original to the system, with little hand written tags hanging from them describing function… This was in the middle 90s.
I toured theaters and power vaults all over the country that had similar era conductors and equipment still in use. Black lacquer boards with brass and glass indicators and switchgear… even real knife switches. They had to put a chain link fence around that board because people are incredibly stupid.
Point is, simple is good. Simple is reliable. Simple is understandable, repairable, durable.
We have moved away from simple at every point, and that’s not a good thing.

I moved away from simple. I replaced several of my regular switches with smart switches. I have lamps plugged into smart plugs. I like the automation. Repairs are not for people on the left side of the bell curve, and in fact many homeowners. It was my choice, and I like my choice.
The mailman just slid his truck into both of my mailboxes at the office. He came in a little hot, went to turn, and the wet grass let him slide right over both mailboxes and posts. He is going to come back Saturday and fix things.

Huh? I will have you know that my engineering degree had a lot of practical experience. I took two semesters of drafting before the advances of CAD, sitting in an unairconditioned room in the 1978 summer heat in College Station, Texas. I was saying to myself the entire time, “do not sweat on the board, do not sweat on the board”.
I got to play with a B-52 jet engine, I took two semesters of machine shop, making stuff that had to work with the instructor’s one inch reverse thread bolt and other tools. I got to play with igniting natural gas in a pipe and measure the speed of the flame front, it made a very cool bang, and other things.
A five minute break to build and fly a paper airplane will increase overall productivity, plus give you a brain dopamine boost:

Unsure why you care if the neighbors notice the camera installation. Anyone that notices might modify their behavior in a positive way. Anyone that doesn’t notice will have their negative behavior recorded for your use. And negative behavior will be potential evidence of improper use of the house.
Better to install quickly. A camera in a box is not very useful for video protection. Even mounting the camera without competing setup for recording might be a deterrent to unwanted behaviors.

I recently read a theory, very plausible, that one of the reasons American education has devolved (besides Gramsci) is that we removed barriers to women in the workforce.
With a brief timeout during WWII, women very rarely worked in executive, management, or white-collar jobs or even blue-collar jobs. This left a large number of intelligent and competent women with only a few places to go if they wanted to work. Mostly nursing and teaching.
Education benefitted greatly from this pool of women. The baby boom opened up many new opportunities, new teacher’s colleges were opened, and education degrees became a thing.
Then the women’s movement blossomed. Or metastasized. In any event, those intelligent and competent women were sucked into the broader workforce, creating more vacancies in elementary, secondary, and undergraduate education. Which were filled with less intelligent, and less capable women. Dunning-Krueger allowed them all the think they were better than they were.
So the less capable women taught less valuable new teachers, resulting in less valuable degrees, who were unleashed on the vulnerable children.
And ivy league colleges are teaching middle school math to freshmen.

It seems to be a common size. Mighty Mule gate openers use the same size batteries…Although that Mighty Mule label on a battery is going to cost you $36 at Tractor Supply.
Anyway. I’ve replaced UPS batteries a few times and it’s really not worth the bother. I might get another eight months from the UPS. I don’t think it’s cheap batteries from the feed store. I had a Tripp Lite that used a single 12v battery so I connected a riding lawnmower battery. I had it, so try it.
It was a good battery. But the Tripp Lite charging circuit wasn’t up to maintaining a full charge.
I just figure a UPS is good for four or five years. Buy a new one, toss the old one. Get all new surge suppression. Which is a lot of why I have several UPS sitting around. Surge suppression.
Anyway. Sorry for the ramble. Yesterday’s 20% chance of thunderstorms turned into I guessing six inches of rain. It rained. Sideways. The power blinked. I waded out to the EDC in five inches of water on the path during a lull in the rain and finally swapped UPS units.
The one I swapped in is for sure four years old, maybe six. I ought to write the date on them but that would make sense.
Then it’s dark. The power went out and well, the UPS feeding the TV and stereo works. I had the little Vizio logo on the TV as a guide. It’s not bright, it’s enough to know where the TV is.
The swapped in UPS is dead. I thought maybe the batteries need to charge. Nope. I hit the switch on the power strip an hour ago and it didn’t even beep.
Time to go shopping.

San Antonio has specific days for hazardous waste disposal. Bring your service invoice to the dropoff point and they take everything. The last time I was in SA we took, various types of batteries, petroleum products, etc. No charge.
Fort Bend County has the same policies for residents. Nothing for businesses.

and the root issue turns out to be – – – there’s no way to join our club or pay dues on line. Which has been true for over 2 years because the guy who set up our paypal account, linked to our old online store, left the group. Can’t change anything on the account because of 2 factor auth. and accounts we no longer have access to, and phone numbers that don’t exist anymore. So over a year ago the secretary was supposed to set up a new paypal account, using club assets (addresses, accounts, etc) but hasn’t. Until he does, I can’t build a new store to sell memberships. Well, I could build it, but only using MY test credentials, which only helps a little bit.

I’ve heard Roy on with Cutie Pie a few times over the last six months, and he doesn’t come off as much of a RINO as “Maga Mayes”, especially on the topic of Islamic developments in Texas based on Sharia law.
Roy made Cutie Pie uncomfortable about the topic which is always a plus in my book.
Middleton is vulnerable on that subject in particular, and I have to wonder about where he got the campaign financing. I imagine that the paper trail is interesting.

@lynn, head towards the coast, shouldn’t take too long to find a ‘marine gas’ pump, no ethanol or water (intentionally) added.
Back in Tampa, all the WaWa stations had a marine pump. Buc-ees maybe? Probably less around here in the desert, but the LEAF EV don’t really care. Still running well (KOW). Might look for a newer, low mileage LEAF and trade up. Really enjoying the car.

One of my guys has a Leaf. It is incredibly small and only goes about 240 miles on electric, it has the large battery. That would barely get me to my mothers house and back.
I will stay with my 2019 F-150 4×4 with the twin turbo V6 that goes really fast. I just want some real gasoline but I do not want to drive more than 5 miles out of my way. I am old and lazy. I do have a buccees three miles away from my house but the only regular unleaded, diesel, and super unleaded. And a car wash that I frequent. No real gasoline.
