Tuesday, which is my Monday this week. Good morning!
Nick is asleep, slugabed SteveF not up yet. No sign of Brad. I suppose I will just talk to myself. That is how to get an intelligent conversation, after all!
I bought a biltong cutter off AliExpress. It turned up missing a few screws and nuts (damaged box), but Big River had those.
I wouldn’t even know where to start looking for specialised fasteners locally, and I suspect there is anyway no retailer nearby that sells onesies and twosies of nuts and bolts. Maybe five or ten in a wasteful plastic blister pack at the local home improvement place, priced like cocaine.
Where I grew up, there was an olde-worlde hardware shop with old guys (I thought they were old – I am probably older now than they were then) in blue overcoats, and the shop was filled with cabinets and drawers from floor to ceiling.
You could describe anything you needed to them, and they had it. It was like being led through Ali Baba’s cave. Which brings us back to AliExpress.
Memories.
Have a good day!
Lies! I’d been awake almost an hour when you posted. Was opening up the chickens and taking care of other chores. Sneakers are now soaked from the dew, suggesting a suboptimal decision on footwear.
I have a nice gash and bruise on one arm from moving stuff yesterday. I hadn’t noticed until my mom saw the blood running down my arm. Central nervous system damage for the win, or something. I have to check my arms and legs a few times every day to make sure there are no injuries that need to be addressed. I say that it’s a pain but it literally isn’t.
There’s one a few miles from the house. Locally owned. I go there for every purchase that I can, to help them stay in business. Slightly more expensive for some items but it’s actually cheaper because I can get in and out faster and because I can describe what I’m trying to do to one of the “old guys in blue overcoats” and they can help put something together from this n that. More than once they rummaged around in boxes of clutter to find something that wasn’t on the shelves. I got my repair done and they made a sale of something that had been taking up space for years.

Up early today, because I am teaching at the trade school. Just now have some time to surf. Blood donation in a couple of hours, not worth going home only to come back for that. So…
Agreed. The mass market beers in the US are pretty awful. In Texas, at least, you have Shiner Bock.
It’s a general problem, though. We have a regional brewery, that was bought up by a national brewery, that was bought up by Carlsberg that is in turn owned by the massive Carlsberg Foundation.
Capitalism is a great system, but it is fragile. Without government regulation to prevent such massive consolidation, competition is destroyed. Which ultimately destroys capitalism.
We have a tiny local brewery run by a hubby/wife pair. They produce decent stuff. But they are in a privileged position: they are happy to break even – I doubt they even take a salary. He’s one of these guys with a lot of irons in the fire, and the brewery serves more as a way of making even more contacts for even more side ventures.
Still, I drink 90% my own brew. It shows how much it’s about personal taste: I have a recipe for Weizenbier that my wife loves and I…tolerate. My personal favorite is my version of a Klosterbier, and my wife dislikes it. Meanwhile the neighbors almost always go for my Pilsner, which is bloody boring, but it is the most similar to the standard commercial beers you get.
I’m jealous. There is so much water running down the mountain that we are on, in various irrigation channels that were build over the centuries of subsistence farming. These are locally called “Suonen”, oddly, no English-language Wikipedia article. There is a complex system of gates that direct the water from one to another. Used to be, you irrigated your field by getting the water sent your way, and closing the Suone so that it overflowed onto your crop. Very tightly regulated, with little wooden tokens showing when and how much water you could take. Nowadays, most of it just flows down and lands in the river.
We maintain them, because they are scenic. Plus the local farmers do still use a little of the water, but with modern sprinklers.
I would love to find a way to tap one, to get running water onto our property. Unfortunately, none of them are close enough.
The cash burn rate at SpaceX is about AI spending. Absent the IPO, they have enough cash to last about a year according to one analysis I read.
Tony is a well known customer of my current employer. Go look at what our stock did on Friday.
The water rights are probably complex, similar to WA State.
When we first moved to Vantucky, rain barrels had just been made legal again after many years of being banned to protect fish.
Technically, SW WA State has been in and out of “drought” since we left.
Very. Some of the water does belong to the down, but a lot still belongs to groups of individuals. With lots of historical precedents, inheritance, etc, etc.. And they can be very possessive of it, even though most of the water just lands in the river.
That neighborhood is the heart of the voting precincts which support the current mess in Seattle City Hall. They got what they voted for. What’s the problem?
Photos or it didn’t happen! The wet shoes do have the ring of truth, however…
I hope your cuts and scrapes are healing ok. W1 regularly gets in a panic when she notices I am bleeding from some DIY scratch*, but your trouble sounds a wee bit more serious.

That is the hardware store style I recall from my youth – the old LaSalle’s were like that, haven’t seen one in years though.
Mostly gone now, but there is one near me, Karls Hardware. Multiple small buildings that grew together over time, narrow & twisty little passages with shelves that go up to the ceiling, knowledgeable staff.
https://www.yelp.com/biz/karls-hardware-rosamond?adjust_creative=duckduckgo&utm_campaign=yelp_feed&utm_medium=feed_v2&utm_source=duckduckgo&start=50
if you skip to the second or third page of reviews you get the feel for what’s going on (I don’t think they paid Yelp so Yelp put the negative reviews first, as are they are known to do).
The problem is probably with who counted the votes, as a
wise manmass murderer once said.I miss local shops like that, and even Radio Shack. These days Home Depot has a good collection, but a lot of it is in blister packs that have too much. McMaster-Carr for the win for onesies and twosies.
Our local Ace Hardware has a large selection of individual fasteners. I choose them over Home Depot or Lowe’s when I just need one or two items.
It’s time tRump unfreezes Iranian assets. Then return them in the form of hardware that goes boom: on bridges, airfields, power plants, etc.
Ace Hardware is about as close as you get these days.
They have the rows of bins of screws, nuts, bolts, brackets, hinges, etc.
But I still end up ordering stuff online, mostly for antenna construction.
“Our local Ace Hardware has a large selection of individual fasteners.”
All those little bins and drawers with individually priced parts from Hillman.
Deep thought #1 for today:
The entire left-wing world does their very best to keep lethal injection drugs away from US states that have the death penalty.
Canada kills more Caucasians with lethal injections through MAID than people die in the US from gunfire. Oddly very few minorities and immigrants.
US states need to buy their drugs from Canada. Are they going to pretend that it’s cruel and unusual to use those drugs?
At the very least, hypocrisy will be exposed.
Deep thought #2
More of a question, really.
We are informed by the very best of sources that crime is down all over, but especially in DC, Virginia, and LA.
Yet there is a very strong perception that this is not so, and law-and-order candidates are having a pretty good run. Or so it seems.
I’m having trouble reconciling these things. My current theory is that all the statistics reporting agencies and “news” outlets are lying like demons to advance the Democrat/Commie cause, and any reductions in actual crime are limited and focused, and most of the decrease is fictional.
And whatever decrease is real is due to ICE deporting illegal immigrants.
And most people realize they’re being lied to and they can’t trust the “news”.
Election years are hard on me and disturb my equanimity.
Sitting out with the fluffybutts, having taken care of a few outdoor chores. A bluejay landed on the apple tree I’m sitting under (to shade the sun enough that I can see my computer screen), not quite arm’s length away but not much more than that. I wasn’t moving anything but my fingers, the human outline was broken up by the computer on my lap, and the human predator head outline was broken up by the stetson and glasses. He just sat and rested a while, then I asked if he wasn’t supposed to be scared of me. Apparently not, as he sat there another minute or two before flying off. I greatly doubt that he recognized me as the person who fills the bird feeder daily, so I guess he was just a chill dude.
Sounds nice. I have been trying to do the same lately, weather permitting.
Currently the winds are at 30mph gusting to 40 and it’s overcast, kind of sucks. I can see an adult california quail on the rail fence so I’m guessing the chicks are down below somewhere.
People wanted $20 Reeboks.
I’m up and drinking coffee. Breakfast is waiting.
Nasal drip is tolerable. Sore throat is improved. Head is a bit ‘swirly’ from the DM still present in the bloodstream but getting better. Cough is much improved. I can feel it lurking but haven’t coughed yet since rising.
Back is KILLING me. Now I need to do some stretching.

The nice Ace Hardware I frequented in Florida in the 90s lost their strip mall lease in a bidding war with Blockbuster Video. Fast forward 10 years, and the video store was gone along with the rest of the chain.
The Dominion ballot scanners were back in the Republican runoff voting at my local polling place today.
I could have also opted for electronic voting, but I had them print the ballot even though it may be Kabuki.
Where I grew up, there was an olde-worlde hardware shop with old guys (I thought they were old – I am probably older now than they were then) in blue overcoats, and the shop was filled with cabinets and drawers from floor to ceiling.
Those olde hardware shops were killed off by Walmart who had 1/5th (SWAG) of the inventory.
Several things led to the demise of the true hardware store.
The shift from repair to replace culture.
Optimization leading to every part being custom meant only OEM could provide parts.
Inflation made inventory cost more and the people working there cost more, especially as families got smaller and more paid employees were required.
Competing with the big box stores on price came later.
There were two big hardware stores in the small town I grew up in, and a third for the really serious. One is still there.
Lumberyards (often part of the hardware store) went thru some of the same issues. “ordinary people” didn’t know how to shop at a lumber yard or old school store, but they did know how to put a board on a cart at HD.

“Private Equity To Be Blocked From Buying Homes?”
https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/private-equity-be-blocked-buying-homes
“Based on a vote last week, it seems very likely Congress will ban corporate ownership of most existing single family homes. “People live in homes,” said Trump in January. “Not corporations.” While Trump has sometimes talked a big game on constraining Wall Street, he generally hasn’t followed through. In this case, though, he did. And somehow, a very corporate-friendly legislature came through as well.””
It’s almost impossible to believe, but here’s the relevant provision in the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act that passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, by a 396-13 margin.”
This sounds like something that SCOTUS would probably veto in the name of interstate commerce.
“Just In: Panel of Leftist Federal Judges Defy Supreme Court, Order Alabama to Reinstate its Rigged and Racially Gerrymandered Congressional Map”
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2026/05/just-panel-leftist-federal-judges-defy-supreme-court/
“A panel of leftist judges decided to snub the United States Supreme Court and throw out a perfectly constitutional redistricting map today.”
“As The Associated Press reported, a three-judge panel in Alabama’s redistricting case issued a preliminary injunction barring the state from switching maps.”
“It requires Alabama to continue using the 5-2 racially gerrymandered map the court ordered for congressional elections in 2024. The state had recently voted to reinstate its old map, which was 6-1 Republican.”
I would advise Alabama to ignore the three judge panel and let the courts decide who is supreme.
First sign of leprosy? Or just OCD?
Most of my chickens are lying in the mulch around the bushes, sunning themselves. Several are panting. Uh, brain trust? If you weren’t lying in the sun, you wouldn’t be so hot.
re the Congressional bill to bock home ownership by private equity, I’d be interested in the Constitutional provision which allows for such a law. Besides that, it would be very challenging to draft it to prevent the private equity firms from buying houses while allowing family trusts and LLCs to own property.
Spinal damage. Possible brain injury, too. MRIs technically existed back then but were very rare and there certainly weren’t any where I was.
And every time the aisle is refreshed, another 5% of the variety goes away.
What Will Roberts Do? Will the CJ issue a letter of rebuke, overrule this “panel”, anything? Roberts will give a “harumpf” and do NOTHING! This panel just gave the middle finger to the Constitution after SCOTUS ruled. The US military should be deployed to Alabama and place this panel in irons.
I guess the DoJ will ask for an emergency SCOTUS appeal. This is the same thing “Lurch” Boasberg did, and he still wears a robe. The Dumbo’s like to screech about the “Rule of Law”, but only when it goes against their agenda.
I finally replaced the carburetor on the walk behind string trimmer. It took a few pulls to prime it and then it ran. It hunts. Looks like dirt down there in the vanes. Best I can see, there’s plenty of safety stuff blocking the view. It did smooth out a tiny bit when I re-installed the “make pretty” engine shroud. I’ll hose it down tomorrow. Maybe today, I want to be sure the engine has cooled.
Anyway. It runs and works nicely. I’m not done, I need to visit NAPA for a foot or so of fuel line. I want to add a shut-off valve and a filter. Four inches of line between gas tank and carb just isn’t enough slack.
“John Cornyn Lost When the Republican Establishment Abandoned the SAVE America Act”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX0631X6BNs
“The polls in Texas have not yet closed, but the story of John Cornyn’s political demise has already been written. It was written over the course of two months by a Senate Republican leadership team that had every opportunity to save him and chose, instead, to save the filibuster.”
Yup.
Hat tip to:
https://thelibertydaily.com/
Oh. The “hunting speed” is the air vane governor. I can touch the link to stop it from moving and the engine runs smooth. Or move it either direction to change the speed. It’s not a huge hunt range, at most 300 rpm, closer by ear to 150 rpm.
This is kind of cool! I can look at this stuff. It’s a lawn mower engine. But it will run without a spinning blade waiting to take off half of my foot if I slip. You have to squeeze the handle like the blade brake on a mower to engage the string trimmer head.

And Homeless Depot. How could I forget Homeless Depot?
For me Cornyn lost my vote a few years ago. 1) He was for some gun control law. 2) He was for amnesty for illegals. Not deport, let them stay. 3) Senators have a 6 year term. He’s on #4 and trying for a fifth term. Go home grandpa! 24 years is enough.
Not Another ‘Dog Bites Man’
I’m not about to say Paxton will be better for Texas. He sounds good but I don’t know if he will follow through. Or if he actually can do what he says.
I voted for Cornyn three times I think. Maybe four times, I forget. He seemed ok. Bland, not an obvious ass.
The other day someone tried to tell me Paxton was scum that cheated on his wife and yada yada yada. You’ve heard the stories. Yeah? So what? “sputtering noises” Let’s talk about Clinton, The President Of The United States banging an intern in the Oval Office.
That’s definitely cheating on his wife. And Hillary? She should have gone on the evening TV network news and divorced his ass in front of the entire nation. But she too, has no honor.
Lot’s of “what abouts” after that. Hey. My rule, the way I was raised: You get married to each other and it’s forever. No side pieces at all. Period. Looking is permitted, you can’t help but see, nothing more.
Remember all the fuss when Carter said whatever about lusting in his heart? Yeah, he dorked out and really could have phrased that better but I understood what he meant, “that chick is sooooo hot!!”. He didn’t cheat on Rosalynn.
Anyway. Cookie time for the dogs. And a shower for me. I can suddenly smell myself. But mostly I’m sticky dirty.

When I was a young lad my country taught me to be willing to defend it and kill communists. At the time that meant overseas, because the communist party line was that there were no commies in the United States. The communists worked hard at that party line, and the Rosenberg boys grew up knowing that their parents had just been misunderstood–until declassified documents from the U.S. and USSR proved otherwise.
Now we have commies serving in congress, mayoring cities, and convincing young people that the same tired old philosophy that has failed every time and resulted in untold misery and the deaths of millions is just waiting for them to elect someone who will “do it right this time”.

The Bush cabal will provide plenty on Paxton beyond the infidelity.
The problem for the RINOs hoping to keep control of Texas is that the US Senate race will sit at the top of the ballot in November.
DeSantis faced the same problem running for reelection in Florida four years ago and kneecapped Disney to protect Little Marco’s Senate seat.
I don’t see Abbott going that far out for Paxton.
Abbott is a squish.
Oh. Wait. He’s crippled because a tree fell on him. That’s the story I heard. So he’s just a squash.

The Bush cabal doesn’t meet scat to Trump, and if he idly mused about someone ridding him of the troublesome RINO’s, they’d be hiding in bunkers in Shanghai.
Abbot didn’t seem to have much to sway Cornyn’s vote in the Senate, and he either gets with the program or spend the rest of his life pushing himself uphill on a 1-in-5 grade paved with +4″ quarry run.
Idea for a new website:
No fund-raising, just a map showing the most likely location of upwind from RINO’s.
About fifty years ago there was a truck carrying offal from a packing plant that had an accident an tipped over. Spilled all over a four-lane road and into the ditches and median. Froze. They were able to get it hosed off the road, but the rest started stinking in spring and the stench lasted for months.
I see Kenedy County is going 75% for Cornyn.
Extra 4 votes ain’t gonna help.
I’m sorry to see what liberal arts has come to.
It’s been this way most of my lifetime, but before the march through the institutions a Liberal Arts degree meant something. It meant you had a general mandatory background in Math and Science. It meant you studied language, and the great works of literature of Western civilization. It meant you were taught critical thinking and philosophy and history and Chesterton’s fence.
You would become a generalist, with an understanding that there were things that were valuable, and worth keeping.
I, with my 70’s engineering degree, chose to read widely, and I bet my coursework included more dead white men than a modern liberal arts degree covers. Just my German literature classes covered Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Herman Hesse, Goethe. There was extracurricular reading as well.
I believe we’ve lost much.
My kids have been taught in school that white people have no culture. Literally none.
I didn’t do enough when they were young. I thought I was, but I underestimated the power of ‘authority’ and the schools’ ability to usurp it.

Walsh and the rest of the fully-indoctrinated global warming zealot spoon-fed press, should be tarred, feathered, and run out of town into a deep dry ravine. They were willing tools of a scam heavily influenced if not fully directed by the ChiComs and the global elite to ruin Western economies–and particularly the United States–impose totalitarian governments and make the general populations serfs.
The mask was ripped off the lies during ClimateGate, and it’s taken more than a decade for the truth to gain momentum, helped by the stubborn refusal of the earth to burn and a natural reluctance to take up the yoke of the rickshaw for the transportation fantasies of the rich.
In a less civilized world, Walsh would be roadkill as the population grabbed the likes of BillG, AlGore, Michael Mann, Gavin Schmidt, and a long list of elected officials and sent them on a bitumen and fire trajectory to the ninth circle.

No meat or dairy in stores, none in school meals or SNAP, none in restaurants, none on the training tables of the Seahawks or Trailblazers, and especially none on the ball parks. No pest control, no killing in animal shelters. No guns or tasers in the hands of the police, lest they hurt or kill people, who are themselves animals. No meat in any airplane coming into or leaving from PDX. Probably have to ban cat and dogs outside, as they inevitably murder other animals, and hey, you know that corn-and-rice-free animal-drived pet food? Gone.
No chickens, no eggs, and bounties on supermarkets found to be carrying banned items.
Judge shop and get one to rule that fixing an animal is “injury”. Arrest pet shop owners that try to import fixed puppies from out of state. No leather goods of any kind, including ball gloves, footballs, and baseballs. Close all the tanneries. No wool.
Probably have to require registration of old leather and animal-derived goods, like old ivory and exotic hardwoods. Be a whole new industry there to give jobs to people displaced by not having other products. Oh, yeah–feather pillows!
Make all the groceries and restaurants in surrounding counties “No Meat for Your Own Good–Show Us THE WAY!” for Multnomah County residents, and have citizen patrols in the parking lots taking down license plates and ratting them out to the MC Sheriff, just like the Illinois State Patrol used to do with fireworks in Missouri. Demand that Portland banks debank any resident found to be buying meat with a debit or bank-issued credit card.
Good. And. Hard.
>>But that is for tomorrow nick to worry about.
So the 3-D printers you had stacked away do work!?
How many ‘nick clones’ can you manage from the comfort of your office chair?
Waymo troubles…
