Tues. Oct. 16, 2018 – more of the same

By on October 16th, 2018 in Random Stuff

Except that it’s only 55F and wet….

55F. Ok now that’s fall weather. We haven’t seen that in many months.

“Bandage” contact lens still doing its job, discomfort is very tolerable. I think I’ve gotten all the tramadol out of my system. I hope so. That’s one I’ll never be taking again.

Time to make the donuts….

    Now that’s something I hadn’t thought of.

I gave up on contacts years ago because of the hassle and because I had been wearing glasses since age 3. Astigmatism means that even the best-fitting contacts were less comfortable for me than most. It was easy for me to go back to eyeglasses.

So the idea of using contacts as a bandage so the eye can heal would never have occurred to me. Brilliant!

In defense of Ms. Warren, she was really in a no-win situation. Her family history, as passed along by her ancestors, said that they had some Cherokee blood. Maybe she shouldn’t have announced that to the world, but fine, she did.

Anyhow, her political opponents laughed at her, and dared to her get a DNA test. If she had refused, they would have said “see, you’re full of sh*t”. So she did get a test, and it confirmed that – many generations ago – she did have such an ancestor. So now the opponents are denigrating her because it was so many generations ago? Seriously?

I’ve spent the last too-many-hours setting up an OwnCloud server to replace Dropbox for our family. I have to give the project credit: the documentation is really excellent. However, it’s a complex system, and there are just inevitable hiccups. Then you go online to look for a solution, and – the bane of the Internet – you have the whole history of the universe online. Does a particular bit of help apply to the current version, or the previous one? Does it even matter?

Total setup time must have been around 8 or 9 hours, and I’m sure more problems will crop up. Still, it is now basically working, and it appears to be beastly fast. I just copied my whole (huge) Dropbox folder over, and it was synced in just a couple of minutes. This is hosted on a super cheap micro-PC with a Celeron processor, so it’s not like there’s any super hardware behind it. Now I just have to integrate this into our backups, screw down the security (I had to open a hole in the firewall – I always hate doing that), and maybe consider some of the performance optimizations that the documentation recommends.

The problem with Fauxcahontis is that she claimed the indian ancestry in order to get special treatment. The cutoff (iirc) for tribal benefits is 1/32. She is so far less than that it’s silly. Also she’s told stories that had the ancestor MUCH more recent than some distant past.

My family history on mom’s side assumed indian blood (in the hillbilly mix), but the MOST is could have been was 1/64th. It wasn’t worth pursuing past there. Sibling’s 23andMe says NO indian blood at all. The funny thing is that when I was working on the rez, with long hair, flat cheeks, and almost no facial hair, people assumed I was a tribal member.

I never tried to benefit from what I knew to be a very minor and tenuous relationship, AT BEST, while Lizzie Gorgon has tried to capitalize on it for years.

BTW, her “tough spot” is one she got herself into. She could have demurred gracefully, and said “well, momma always said… but I guess she was wrong”, but because she is a politician, and their FIRST thought is to lie, she doubled down…. and it bit her in the ass.

43f and drizzle at commute time.
Had to put the car heater on for the first time since I bought it. Works great. Took my jacket out of the closet yesterday. Checked the pockets. The folding knife, hidden $20, and 1/10 oz. gold coin are still there.
I’ve been watching the “Active Self Protection” YouTube channel lately. They post a daily video of a real life attack or robbery or police shooting and critique it. A lot to be learned by watching real life violent encounters. One thing I noted was that in no video yet reviewed has an armed defender needed to reload. In fact, even against multiple attackers no more than eight rounds were required. So maybe I can scale back my paranoia for carrying multiple magazines. Lots of examples of what NOT to do when things go bad. I was amazed at the number of these videos that come from Brazil. I am wondering if that indicates Brazil has a lot of violence or perhaps it’s just easier to capture and distribute videos there.
I really need to get back to work. We have just disabled thousands of shared generic accounts and I need to deal with the resulting screams from frustrated users.

As a card carrying member of the Muskogee Creek Indian Nation, I am no friend of Ms. Warren. The best thing she could have done was to keep her mouth shut and hope the issue went away. She did herself no favors by publicizing the DNA results that show that somewhere around 10 generations ago she had an ancestor with some kind of American Indian blood. This actually makes her whiter than most Americans of European descent. My wife is 1/32 Choctaw but as her ancestors refused to sign the Dawes Rolls, she can’t claim Choctaw citizenship. To their credit, the Cherokee had a press release denouncing Ms. Warren’s claim. Some tribes require a minimum percentage of Indian ancestry to claim citizenship rights. The Muskogee Creek only require proof of descent from a Dawes Roll member. As a Creek citizen I am eligible for certain benefits provided by the tribe such as excellent health services at facilities in Oklahoma, reduced rate on Tribal license plates and auto / trailer registration. We also get education assistance and other perks. Most benefits are only for residents on the Tribal lands in Oklahoma, where I will move when I retire. My brother lives in Little Rock but regularly travels to Oklahoma for medical care.

  6. ech says:

From what I have read, most tribes cut off membership past 1/16th. In addition, she claims to have been Cherokee, but has no evidence of that. And, yes, she was at one time listed as a “minority” in a law school directory. The hiring faculty members don’t remember it coming up in her hiring, but they would say that to avoid a lawsuit.

Warren could have accepted that she isn’t going to be President and simply issued a mea culpa along with the results of the test.

If the Dems run a Boomer against Trump, Trump will win reelection.

  8. MrAtoz says:

So she did get a test, and it confirmed that – many generations ago – she did have such an ancestor.

My read of the results and others who have commented, the results didn’t show AI ancestory because there is no DNA database of such. Extrapolations were used of South American countries who have a DB. So, she *could* have an ancestor. Chief Warren really poked the pooch on slam dunking on this. Plus the Cherokee Nation has told her to fuck off.

I have seen where the cutoff is based on the profits of the casino and how much the chief wants to share with you.

    https://www.backblaze.com/blog/2018-hard-drive-failire-rates/

“As of September 30, 2018 Backblaze had 99,636 spinning hard drives. Of that number, there were 1,866 boot drives and 97,770 data drives. This review looks at the quarterly and lifetime statistics for the data drive models in operation in our data centers. In addition, we’ll say goodbye to the last of our 3TB drives, hello to our new 12TB HGST drives, and we’ll explain how we have 584 fewer drives than last quarter, but have added over 40 petabytes of storage. Along the way, we’ll share observations and insights on the data presented and we look forward to you doing the same in the comments.”

That is a lot of hard drives. And no SSDs (cost ratio still too high).

Gotta hope not. All of your 401(k) and pension money went into CA real estate and FANG stocks.

The idiot Castro brother (OK, they’re both idiots) started his book tour. CA must have some money left for 2020 antics … at least enough to buy all of those books.

When the TX governor dumbocrat candidate loses by 20 points and Robert Francis loses by 5 points, that data may not be very good. Robert Francis is carrying 10 points on his nickname alone.

The Progs want to know all about that 15 points who would vote for Abbott and then turn around and support Robert Francis on the same ballot. Those voters’ thought processes are probably key to winning Texas in 2020.

I’m kinda curious about those people myself. They need to be medicated IMHO.

I actually believe the “Bobby” meme is more important than that other B- word right now, but I don’t want to encourage the thought that Robert Francis might be hispanic in some way.

They are the same people who voted for Hillary and then voted a straight repuglican ticket for everyone else in Fort Bend County. I do not understand them either.

Here is a 32 TB SSD from Intel for servers, cost unknown:

Sorry, nope. That portion of my life ended in 1989 when I left TXU to go back into the oil and gas bidness.

Way too many intern jobs there.

Do they supply the wasp spray ? And monthly (ugh!) clean-outs ?

My advice for new guys regarding the portolet– based on years of experience with public events and construction projects– don’t take ANYTHING IN THERE WITH YOU. Absolutely nothing you’d have to get back.

The blue water STINGS like fire. Float an island of paper. Watch slo mo water droplet videos if this doesn’t make sense yet.

Expensive electronics WILL NOT SURVIVE the blue water. Don’t bother retrieving it. You didn’t take anything valuable in with you right??? See rule one.

There are grades of portolets. Badger management until you get upgrades. Some are bigger. Some have water inside. YOU MUST have a wheel chair accessible one onsite. It’s nice and big. You must have hand washing stations available outside the potties in almost every jurisdiction. The best grade is the so called “Executive” which is a trailer based actual restroom with porcelain and everything, including air conditioning. This is what you want if you must have temporary toilets.

The companies charge by how often they clean, which they figure by combining load (# of people) with time. You can have them emptied and cleaned EVERY DAY if you pay for it. This is preferable to standing on the seat because the pile is higher than the seat (and YES I worked a jobsite where that was the case.)

If your event is after dark, don’t forget lighting for the potties. A “tap light” or a couple of chemical lightsticks are sufficient, as is a 5w bulb in a metal clamp light sitting on top of the potty. you don’t need much light, and don’t WANT bright, but you don’t want people waving their phones around either.

I have several amusing stories about mishaps and portolets… but I only tell them in person.

($1300 digital walkie talkies and the blue water don’t mix….)

But the blue chunky water does not seem to bother 9 mm handguns. Not me, but another person related the story to me. You just don’t want to retrieve a 9 mm that has one in the chamber with a stick even though it has a grip safety.

  33. lynn says:

Been there, done that. Also in the first plant that I worked at, it had potties in the plant. But the fresh water piping was busted. So you brought a five gallon bucket of water with you and hoped the guy before you brought his bucket of water also.

One of my first jobs as a real junior engineer was to repipe the fresh water for units 2, 3, and 4. And the fire water tower. Was much more difficult a job than I realized. And I learned about something called “water hammer”. You’ve never lived until you casually opened a valve on a 4 inch water pipeline and watch the pipeline jerk itself out of the ground 1/4 mile away. I got a free lecture from my boss over that one.

  34. Greg Norton says:

Do they supply the wasp spray ? And monthly (ugh!) clean-outs ?

Cleanouts are weekly, and that is not enough for the number of people present on the site (8-10) regularly.

No wasps, but we have rattlesnakes and scorpions running around the site.

I already checked the Ercot careers page … and submitted a resume for the Automation Engineer gig. Salary requirements: $X + working toilet.

Seeing that the jons were not being cleaned, I asked the site super where he wanted me to site my port a jons. “Whadda ya mean?” “My guys won’t use those, and I’m paying them too much to have them go somewhere else….”

Jons got relocated, and cleaned and emptied regularly after that. Nice when I can make things better for everyone on a site….

I see the same thing. I’m not sure if it is related, but Veritas released a hot one today, centered on the twit Senator in Missouri. One staffer was asked (I’m probably paraphrasing), “What do you say to moderates if the Senator votes for impeachment?”

WRT YouTube, I heard a discussion on the radio last night blaming a worldwide YouTube outage on Pakistan. It seems the Pakistani gooberment wanted to block all YouTube coming into Pakistan. It seems that the “hackers” that Pakistan hired to do the job got their programming direction going the wrong way and blocked YouTube for everyone except Pakistan. Must have been a low bid job.

  42. ech says:

Pakistan had their ISP that is the link to the internet redirect all traffic to a null area. Unfortunately, that routing change got propagated to the next upstream provider, the biggest traffic handler in Asia, and propagated from there to other providers. You Tube was unavailable to over half the world for about 2 hours.
