Sun. Oct. 14, 2018 – nice day!

By on October 14th, 2018 in Random Stuff

77F and only 50%RH. Sunny and nice out!

Maybe today will focus on outdoor stuff. Driveway, scrap, decorations…

Picked up some good stuff at yard sales yesterday, despite not hitting them until after 1pm. Emergency food (USCG bars), gub stuff, resale items, all sorts of stuff. I guess yard sale season started. It was very slow all summer, due to heat and wet.

Gotta feed the kids.

Something happened at the house down the street from us recently (death?) which inspired a big clean out.

The occupants simply filled two 20 cu. yd. dumpsters, one per week, and had them hauled away. I guess they didn’t want the yard sale hassle. No “For Sale” sign yet.

The real estate silly season around us went cold with the rising interest rates. I’ve even seen a “For Sale By Owner” sign, a really rare sight in Austin over the last four years.

You know, if I was Antifa, I would reconsider showing up at places where some idiot announced that the Antifa was going to be there. Seems like several law and order groups are beating their heads in whenever they get the chance.

This is how civil wars start. And Antifa is anything but a law and order group, no matter what that article said.

    From yesterday:

I feel that everyone has a right to decide to terminate their own life. Such a decision should not be carried out until counseling with a doctor and a disinterested party schooled in such decisions. Once all three agree the choice has been made based on reasonable decisions then terminating one’s life should be allowed.

My aunt wasted away in a nursing home for four years, those last two years being nothing but laying in bed. They would wake her up to scrape yesterdays food off one end and shove some more in the other end. My aunt had always been adamant she did not want to live that way.

You know, if you cannot feed yourself and you cannot indicate / articulate that you want some food, you should not be force fed. Because if you did not ask for the food, there is a good chance that you do not want the food.

We do things in the name of humanity that are cruel.

Spent yesterday replacing my garage door opener. The old garage door opener is a ten year old belt drive and the belt stripped. Said belt is $80 on Amazon. No freaking way am I going to replace a belt when the new garage door opener is $200.

However, I bought a Genie screw drive, the queen of garage door openers, for $225 plus tax at Home Depot. My kind son was helping me. So when we got the new garage door opener up, the track came apart in the middle. I had the choice of buying the $25 track extension or buying a new 22 ft wide 2×10 board so I could move the GDO closer to the garage door. I bought the one foot track extension. So today I get to wire the new system up by myself. Did I mention the kind son who helped me do the heavy lifting ?

I did not get to see my Texas Aggies beat the Carolina Jayhawks yesterday. I reduced the channels on my DirecTV in order to drop the bill from $160/month to $120/month. The idiot in Bangladesh assured me that I would still be able to watch my Texas Aggies football and Houston Astros. He was wrong. I did watch the Astros beat up the Boston Red Sox in between an extra trip to Home Depot and installing that GDO extension. The idiot in Bangladesh appears to have signed me up for 100+ hours of NFL games per week as if I wanted to subject myself to that nightmare. Not !

Today, I will be calling DirecTV to call them morons. I would drop the service except Comcast is probably worse. And not any cheaper. I am also paying AT&T $65/month for my 28/2 mpbs DSL line. I wonder if Comcast can beat that $160 + $65 for internet and tv without making me commit for years and let me watch my Texas Aggies and Houston Astros without making me commit for years ?

Both sides are spoiling for a fight in Portland. If the shooting starts anywhere, it will be there.

I always found it interesting that my wife’s Prog associate and her husband chose Portland when they had to flee Fredericksburg after the 2010 election. Both were from the Houston area, the husband from Cut-n-Shoot.

Probably. I pay, IIRC, about $50 extra/month for internet – 100 down/ 15 up. The cost of cable is hard to predict, it depends on the exact package you want. Go to one of their storefronts and they can lay out exactly what you get for how much. Some packages require a 1 year lock in. The DVR is mediocre, but has been getting better over time. Outages are pretty short and not nearly as frequent as they used to be.

A&M doesn’t have games on broadcast networks in the Houston area?

How far are you from a tower for a station which does have the rights?

  10. Greg Norton says:

“By the way,” Cruz “joked” while stumping in Houston, “he had Joe Kennedy down here campaigning with him. And Joe Kennedy was driving him around. I have to admit, it may be the first time in history anyone’s ever asked a Kennedy to drive.”

Robert Francis will discover that invoking the Kennedy mystique carries a lot of baggage.

I asked about withholding her food and just let her slowly starve to death, with enough drugs to squash any pain. I was told that was against state law and the nursing home had to feed her as she could not articulate her wishes. Only if she was terminally ill and being out of your mind is not considered terminally ill. So the state continued to pay $5,000 a month to fed a vegetable for four years. In my opinion when have dementia to the point where you don’t know anything that is terminally ill. Nope, not according to the state.

  12. Ray Thompson says:

I wonder if Comcast can beat that $160 + $65 for internet and tv

Should be able to do that. I am paying $196.00 a month for 150/10 internet, TV (X1 with DVR, two X1 boxes, one regular box), and phone service. I am also paying $5.00 a month for 24 months for an iPad 128 Gig, the newest version. Not too bad a deal. Normal bill is about $189.00, two year commitment. When the commitment is up I get another two years to keep the same price.

I have had good service with Comcast. Outages rare and short lived. X1 has been good. DVR allows skipping commercials as I DVR most of my shows. To me all the internet/tv/phone providers are all about the same. I am fortunate that the tech that services my area knows me, went to school locally, and is really easy to work with. Have not had to deal with a tech in about eight years.

I almost forgot — If you go Comcast and buy your own cable modem, *NEVER* lose the sales receipt.

Got my first call from a Robert Francis volunteer today. As soon as she said the B-word, the reflex kicked in and I said, “Oh hell no” before hanging up the phone.

The Robert Francis people were out canvassing the neighborhood last night, and, fortunately, we weren’t home when they worked the street ~ 7:30 PM. I saw them working the next street when we drove home from dinner about 20 minutes later — CA money means everyone going door to door has an iPad with a B— sticker on the back.

Nope. SEC channel, sometimes ESPN. Rarely on CBS. Way more money. Because college sports is all about money nowadays.

College football and basketball have nothing to do about educating the players. The are minor leagues for the NFL and NBA, respectively.

    One word: Jimbo

Things are getting bad at the high school level. Round Rock ISD has a bond issue on the ballot this year, and a fancy new football stadium for the high school was one of the expenditures which got the last bond issue defeated even in the semi-secret election the school board tried two years ago in the Spring.

They’ve done a better job hiding the stadium this time around.

On a personal note, my son is in the dog house with the band director at the high school because I refused to take another $50 box of friggin candy to “sell”, taking the box back to the school myself, and depositing it on the director’s desk saying, “I’ll consider it to be an honest mistake … this time.”

Good for you. Assuming the stuff is the same quality as when I was in HS, a two year old Hershey bar tends to be better, even if the corners are going white.

And they get enough money via property taxes.

Booster fundraising is necessary, but a lot of money gets wasted.

My actions may mean my son spends Senior year still on JV unless the band director is demoted/fired (not impossible given how they’re doing in competition this year). Most of the parents just look the other way and cut the checks. Me and my big mouth.

If you go Comcast and buy your own cable modem, *NEVER* lose the sales receipt

I will correct you and state that you should never lose the receipt from Comcast when you turn in your modem. A sales receipt where you purchased your modem does not prove to Comcast that you are using that modem and no longer have the Comcast modem. In fact anything you turn into Comcast get a receipt and check the serial number on the receipt.

And lastly is to immediately make a copy of the receipt on paper where the ink will not fade. Comcast receipts, because they are on thermal paper, will fade over time and become worthless. You need a copy produced on a laser or inkjet.

I never had a rental cable modem in my possession, and they didn’t have any proof that I ever signed for one or received one in a shipment. It turned out that the modem I bought at Best Buy was a model that Comcast rented to really stupid customers who couldn’t do the math on paying $40 once vs. $5/month. I guess they figured that the paperwork simply got lost somewhere.

The cable system in Vantucky was still analog TV when we lived there, and I never signed for cable boxes either.

    Comcast really is Kabletown.

Well that sucked. Spent some more time in Urgent Care. Jabbed myself right in the eye. With my safety glasses. Huge scratch on my cornea and it hurts like CRAZY. Trying to find an open pharmacy after 6pm on Sunday was a hike too. The first one, 7 miles away, had a 2+ hour wait. Driving to another got the wait down to 30minutes.

Painkiller and antibiotics for me…. and I have to move the safe tomorrow. Already have the trailer and appointment. Had to add a trailer brake controller to my truck, which is why I needed the safety glasses. Got the controller working anyway. Picked it up for $5 years ago at a yard sale. Finally needed it enough to install it. Prepping. It works.

(but the cost of my urgent care is adding up…..)

Well, we just had some excitement behind our house on the street between us and the elementary school. I was working in the garage on the new garage door opener and heard a tremendous bang. I ran in the back yard and saw two vehicles had hit each other on the 35 mph street. It looks like the 16 year boy three doors down my street was driving his five year old Mustang GT at a very high rate of speed. He apparently lost control and hit an oncoming suv, spun, and then hit a tree on the sidewalk behind my house. Had I not been working on the GDO, the wife and I would have been walking back there about that time.

The kid’s Mustang GT looks to be totaled. The oncoming suv looks to be totaled. The lady in the suv is apparently really shook up according to Facecrack.

I wonder if the dad who bought his 16 year son a Mustang GT six months ago is going to buy him another one ?

    Dude !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most Walgreens are open 24×7. I like going there between 10pm and 1am for no wait. Usually. My dad says their prices are too high, I say they are extremely convenient for me. There are over 14,000 Walgreens across the fruited plains (the USA).

Map them out for after the apocalypse. While other people are cleaning out the HEB, I will head to the Walgreens to stock up on our prescription drugs.

The walgreens are open but the pharmacy is not.

The nearest 24hr PHARMACY was 6 miles, the bulk were 12 or more miles. Still, possible and not that bad in the grand scheme. Lots better than none….

Feels like I’ve got a piece of broken car window glass in my eye. Just a huge scratch, but feels like a chunk. It must be big from the doc’s reaction. I’ll try to get to an eye specialist in the morning. I can’t take the tramadol and drive much, let alone move 800 pound objects comfortably, so maybe I can see the doc and get a drop to stop it for a couple of hours while I work.

    Now off to bed.

“Colorado Violating 1st & 5th Amendment Rights Of Christian Baker After SCOTUS Ruling”
    https://freedomoutpost.com/colorado-violating-1st-5th-amendment-rights-of-christian-baker-after-scotus-ruling/

“The state of Colorado is arguing in federal court that, despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling, its Civil Rights Commission can issue new discrimination charges against Christian baker Jack Phillips, because the panel’s members have been replaced.”

“The commission found that Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, discriminated against a same-sex couple by refusing to bake a cake for their wedding. The Supreme Court reversed the decision in a 7-2 ruling in June on narrow grounds, concluding the commission did not employ religious neutrality, violating Phillips’ rights to free exercise of religion.”

“Now, the state is issuing new charges against Phillips for refusing to create a cake celebrating a “gender transition,” ignoring evidence that Phillips accepts all customers while refusing to create messages that violate his religious beliefs.”

“Phillips has responded with a lawsuit contending his constitutional rights have been violated.”

“A Colorado congressman has asked the Department of Justice to investigate the state commission.”

So why did we just go through this nonsense with SCOTUS nominations when Colorado won’t follow it’s rulings anyway ?

Regarding cell phones/plans (from yesterday; catching up).

My wife and I use MetroPCS. Two lines, unlimited talk/data/texting, $45/month. Included a free LG3 phone.

Uses the T-Mobile network (T-Mobile just bought MetroPCS). Good enough coverage. Wife likes the unlimited data – she watches scrapbook videos while I am driving (with earphones, thankfully). I use Amazon Prime Music on the road, which also uses the data line. All works well except in some very rural parts of the WA-SMF I-5 route.

Going further down I-5 to D-Land. Then I-15 to SLC. Then I-15/84 back home. Good enough coverage the last times I went that way. And the phone works fine.

I like the flat-rate/unlimited stuff. Plus the free phone.

Time to take another look at that Nissan Versa cross shop, but anything new is going to be expensive to insure.

The maintenance light activated on the Challenger R/T at work so we now have the driver attempting to wind a Chevy Cruze up to 100. The problem with the vehicle isn’t the speed as much as the braking. Even a cr*pbox these days produces almost as much HP (160) as an unmodified Trans Am from the late 70s (180); they just weigh a heckuva lot more.
