Fri. Apr. 12, 2024 – “it’s Friday- I’m in love…”

Cool and clear again. Hooray. Yesterday was nice too, but I spent most of it indoors. I will get out of the house today… if it’s nice. It was in the low 60s when I went to bed.

Spent the day doing domestic bliss. Dishes. Laundry. Cleaning- a little. Mostly moving stuff around and sorting for auction, BOL, and house. It’s slow going to put some of the stuff away, or find new spots for it. My office is a shambles with my non-prepping hobby, my ham radio stuff, and the pipe refurbishment all stacked on top of the other older stuff…

I did manage to do some work in the driveway and patio too. I threw away a bunch of failed cans, mostly soup with pop tops, and the Hill Country Fair canned peaches. I’ve mentioned the peaches before, they failed way early. The other cans were rusted either by rat urine, condensation, or the liquid from the failed peaches and soup. The particular shelves were stocked at the beginning of wuflu lockdowns, so I haven’t messed with them for a while. I did identify that they’d failed some time ago, but couldn’t find the time to sort them out. I’ve still got more cleanup to do there, but I moved some bottles of cleaning supplies there in the mean time.

I also checked the live trap in the attic. No joy. I added a smaller live trap baited with different stuff. I’ll check that today. I didn’t hear the critter so IDK if it was even in the attic while the traps were up there. I’ll leave them until they need re-baiting, or I catch something.

Today I’ll do a couple of pickups, and some more auction organizing. I’m headed to the BOL this weekend, after my non-prepping hobby meeting on Saturday. I’m sure there are lots of things waiting for my attention there. Meanwhile, I’ll do more of the organizing and storing here.

I’ve got some brisket to break down and freeze too, as well as bacon and a chub of hamburger. Freezers are full, so I may have to do some re-stacking to make room. Probably time to rotate some of the deep freezes to the more accessible upright…

There is always stuff to do.

And always stacking.

Get busy.

* I didn’t always like the Cure, but I find I like to hear them now, and I’m a bit surprised that my taste for 80s music has solidified over the years. Back then I mostly listened to the radio, so I heard everything, but preferred rock. Now I mostly listen to Alt Rock and New Wave, with a lot of other stuff mixed in. Rarely do I listen to classic rock, even when it’s bands I loved. One of the good things about getting older, is that like women, I find a broader range of music to be attractive…

Then the loudest, most unhappy and screwed up women decided for all women that men that claimed to be women should be able to compete as women and destroy women’s athletics, using the same locker room.

More broadly, a broad majority of broads supported forcing a men-only golf tournament to accept women. They supported forcing men-only country clubs to accept women. They supported forcing men-only clubs and organizations to accept women. They supported forcing men-only jobs to accept women, and then they demanded that physical requirements be lowered so that women could get in and they supported to the work environment once they were there.

All this while keeping up a cadence of “Anything you can do, I can do better” and “What do we need men for? Absolutely nothing.” And “If you don’t have a vagina, stay out of women’s issues.”

Now women are calling on men for support in keeping bio-men out of women’s sports and out of women’s bathrooms. They’re crying about courts forcing some women-only events to allow men to attend, either men identifying as women or all men. “We need our safe space!”

And, disgustingly, we see a large number of simple-minded men simpering and rushing to comply.

Not me. I’m staying out of this women’s issue. When I see a large number of women demanding that men be allowed men-only spaces, I may speak up.

Last week in New Orleans, we went to dinner with a higher up of a new med school who was interested in having my wife join the faculty, but I think I screwed that opportunity up when the topic came around to WA State and why we left.

Me not having a job didn’t really seem to register as a legitimate reason to the med school prof … or her wife.

So, is your wife considering the job ?

I don’t know if they’re still interested in hiring her after meeting the gatekeeper.

Like most stereotypes, “B*tchy Doctor’s Wife” has a foundation in truth, and, honey, I’m among the b*tchiest there is after the last 24 years.

The recent ACM-W Grace Hopper conference fiasco.

The CS department in WA State where I made my first run at a Masters had an ACM-W chapter but no mainstream ACM during my time there. The department justified this funding discrepancy by saying that males were welcome to participate in the “W” group.

They certainly got what they wanted. What’s the problem?

I suppose the discussions of gender equality are the same everywhere. Here, the Constitution was amended to require equality in all aspects.  There was still an uproar from feminists, when women’s retirement age was increased by a year, to match men’s. Men are required to serve in the militia (or do an alternative service in the civilian world). Mention that women should be required to do the same, and get excoriated.

Mind, I shouldn’t pick on women here, it’s the same for any group that managed to feel discriminated against. Equal rights when it favors them. If it would mean eliminated a special privilege, then…nah…

Sponge Brain is forgiving $7.4B in student loans. He is taking from some and giving to others. He is skirting the supreme court’s decision on his previous effort. Typical Spongey, bending the law to his benefit. In this case, votes.

Those “students” took out the loans, signed documents, and were adults when they made the decision. They now have a degree which gives them a job that does not pay enough to repay those loans. That seems like a very short-sighted decision. Now they are being taught that a loan is not a commitment to repay. What is next? Car loan forgiveness? Mortgage forgiveness?

Hey Slow Joe, how about giving me back some of that money that I paid for my child’s college degree? Seems only fair. After all Spongey, you are favoring one group over another, giving some benefits to which I am not entitled because I paid for what I borrowed. I was responsible and am now being penalized.

It had the orginal engine  292 V-8.  I also have a ‘58 F-100 with a 410 engine out of a ’67 Mercury.  Both bodys were rough but beween them I had parts to make a good truck.  I was going to stroke the 410 out to 445 and use a 3×2 setup but not sure now what will happen.

I’ve got a several 390, 410, 428 engines and of course the 427  now stroked 482.  I have a ’66 Falcon and 1979 Farimont wagon so more than enough car project options.

This has been a tough month.  I had surgery on my hand for a cyst that turned out to be a section of nerve and that grown around an artery and vein in my palm pad.  The doctor cut that part of the nerve out.  Only problem is the nerve will take years to grow back due my age therefore my thumb, index and middle fingers tips are numb.  Sucks to be old.

Today a neighbor’s 60 pound dog attacked my 10 pound chihuahua while the neighbor and I were talking.  We have no idea why.  I fought his dog off mine and took mine, Draco, to the vet.  Six puncture wounds in his neck.  Several stitches and four drain stents to patch him up.  The drain stents are dripping blood so I don’t see any way to protect the rugs and furniture unless he stays a cage.

I’ve have only put him in the cage on one occasion prior to this when I had to leave him at home alone while I had surgery on my hand.  He is not happy.  He normally roams the house and eats or drinks whenever.  He’s been whining a bit but I don’t see what else to do.

He can’t wear a collar or harness that covers his neck or throat wounds.  I usually walk him every day but that won’t happen for seven days.

My neighbor came by when I came home and asked to see the vet bill so he could pay it.

    @Nick

I didn’t always like the Cure, but I find I like to hear them now, and I’m a bit surprised that my taste for 80s music has solidified over the years.

Radio in the 1970’s and well into the 90’s played Top 40….over, and over, and over. Even a good FM station seldom played more than a couple tracks from an album, unless it was the featured album on King Biscuit or some local show.

I had favorite albums in the vinyl days that I played the snot out of, flipping sides every 20 minutes or so. I either ignored the tacks I didn’t like or had to manually skip them. I bought an Akai tape deck and I could put two albums on a 90-minute tape (mostly), so my collection added tapes of borrowed records.

When CD’s started mining the back list the Greatest Hit collections were among the first. The Eagles “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” was the best selling single album ever on vinyl with ten songs a bit over 40 minutes. Ten songs was pretty standard for LP’s. The CD format would hold 70 minutes, so we started getting “bonus” cuts, then new collections with 15-16 songs. Double albums fit one CD. Then new collections with two CD’s.

The Eagles Complete Greatest Hits has two CD’s and times at 2:24. They just issued a three disc set, “To the Limit: The Essential Collection”, which basically adds a couple songs and a third disc with live performances that are available on other CD’s.

The point is that it’s worthwhile to look at what’s available from the classic rock bands that you loved. Chances are that there’s a collection with the best of the deeper cuts that you would really enjoy.

Don’t ignore classic rock albums. The Rolling Stones “Hot Rocks” was a double album that became a double CD which now would fit on one disc.  It’s good, and there is a “More Hot Rocks”, but the Rolling Stones is such an exceptional long-lived band that the true “essential” collection is all their original albums.

Then there’s REO, Boston, Dire Straits…

I don’t recall hearing much John Hiatt, but I have 5-6 of his albums and enjoy them all.

New Wave: Highly recommend Blondie’s “Platinum Collection” (2 discs, 1994), although my real preference would be their first four albums and skip the rest.

BTW, the five Israeli submarines all carry nuclear 200 KT cruise missiles with a 1,500 km (930 mile) range.  They can each launch four nuclear cruise missiles simultaneously.

Friday the thirteenth falls on a Saturday this month.

I always remember Jerry Pournelle and Robert Bruce Thompson when I think of that.

It is going to be a beautiful day here. I woke before dawn, so I opened all the doors and windows to air the house, and went outside to listen to the dawn chorus. W1 is still fast asleep.

I am really enjoying using the “Merlin” smartphone app from Cornell University ornithology lab to identify birds by their song. It seems magical. JEP said the day would come when we would each carry a supercomputer with us, and he was right about that, as well as about much else.

The Merlin app didn’t hear anything exotic this morning, but even just the blackbirds, robins, great- and blue-tits were a fantastic symphony of sound. Odd that listening to tiny dinosaurs screaming for sex is so soothing to the human soul.

Time to get up soon and seize the day. Be well, everyone. Bob Sprowl, best wishes for your hand, and to Draco for both of your recoveries. Glad to hear your neighbour is doing the right thing.

Walker’s active noise blocking earplugs for shooting ~10% of retail.

Nick, if those are surplus to your needs, I might be interested. I am curious to find out if the electronics package of those or the Axils can be mated to a custom-moulded earpiece, but don’t want to spend retail to find out.

I have plugs that the local hearing aid place made for me, but they are passive only (with tiny overpressure valves), but I would like to try the actively enhanced ones. I have a fantastic set of over-the ear Sordin earmuffs with active electronics, but in-the-ear protection is much more convenient for hunting, as it doesn’t interfere with headgear, takes up almost no space and has negligible mass.

Hearing protection. Use it religiously, and you can still hear the birdsong.

@drwilliams,  blondie is one of the bands I hate to hear now.  There might be some deep tracks that didn’t get a ton of airplay back in the day, but anything that did just makes me cringe.   The eagles are the same- I am so very tired of  the same three songs…

I was thinking about the rolling stones yesterday as I drove around.  I really like their earlier stuff, with their roots influences showing more strongly.   I don’t think there are any songs that I’m not glad to hear when the radio serves up some serendipity.   I’ve always like the who, zep, dire straights, ac/dc, and most of the monsters of rock.  Since I don’t listen to channels that play them often, I’m not sick of hearing them, I just don’t seek them out (the true “classic rock” format bands that is.)

My own taste has evolved, as well as going from a world where most people heard what was chosen for them in  the moment, to a world where the whole span of musical creation is available to chose from.   The youtube suggestion engine is pretty great for serving up some serendipity once you have it ‘seeded’ with a few styles and artists you like.   I haven’t tried the other online music services that claim to do similar t hings, building “channels” or playlists tuned to your preferences.

I am finding that even stuff I think I know well has more depth and ‘musicality’ in it than I remember.   You remember the hook, you forget  that an astonishing amount of 80s music had big brass sections, or really good piano, or some fantastic drumming.  There’s a reason beyond payola that those songs hit the radio and stayed there for long enough to become part of the musical landscape.

    @denis,

WRT the active protection, try the walkers that are true wireless earbuds.  IIRC they  are about $40 usd, and they work surprisingly well.   I’ll have to look some other time, but I think the molded part comes off and is interchangeable with a couple of different sized buds.   The weirdest thing is that they all start out with enough enhancement to counteract the plug, so it sounds like you don’t have them in.

The cost difference seems to be in how they handle feedback, sonic fidelity, and if they have blutooth to link to phones or radios.

NB that I haven’t actually shot while wearing any of them, I have only used them for band concerts and other things where the loudness isn’t percussive like shots, and how they handle music and voice is important.  I use the boost feature to help hear the kids dialog too…

I’ve got to get some range time in with some new toys, and I should take the various active earpros with me.   I now have several in ear, and at least one over the ear model.  If I was a full time content creator that would be great content!

Has there been any interest from flippers?

Umm, it’s not your max bid if you’re gonna increase it.  😉

W2 and a friend are going to see the Stones in concert next month. Long live Mick!

Thanks, Nick. My “plan” is to get a set each of the Walkers and of the Axils, take them to the acoustician lab that made my passive plugs and see if they can mate a custom ear plug to the electronic elements. I suppose I could also just contact Walkers and see if they provide their custom service internationally, but where’s the challenge in that?

    Quick pneumonia update.

I have just taken the sixth and final tablet of my course of Azithromycin. It seems to be working / have worked against the chlamydia pneumoniae infection; I have more energy (must check my oxygen saturation… it was down to below 92%), and the coughing went from constant to intermittent, to occasional. This morning, I hacked up a very small amount of purulent sputum upon waking, but nothing like what was coming up throughout previous days.

My GP tells me that Doxycycline would have been the first choice antibiotic, but it has known side effects upon exposure of the patient to UV light, so I would have been confined to the indoors for two or more weeks. She took pity on my mood and the springtime sun, and Azithromycin it was.

    Modern medicine. Recommended.
