10:16 – One of the items on my to-do list was to buy an HD camcorder to use in shooting more of the science videos I used to post on YouTube. One must-have feature was a microphone input, which is surprisingly rare on consumer-grade camcorders. I can’t stand the audio from on-camera microphones, so I’ll always use either a shotgun or a wireless lavaliere. Doing that requires a mic input.
So yesterday I got a promo email from Costco that featured a Canon HF R400 HD Camcorder Bundle (with case and 16 GB memory card) for $290 after a $70 rebate. Today is the last day of the promo. I checked Amazon, and their price was higher for the bare camcorder. I checked Canon, and the HF R400 HD camcorder does have a microphone input. So I just ordered the camcorder bundle from Costco. Imagine my surprise when I added it to my cart and found out that the price wasn’t $290 after the $70 rebate. It was $290 before the $70 rebate. So I ended up paying $220 plus tax, with free shipping.
Boy, I remember when those things cost the earth. Looks nice, I may have to get one before my next overseas trip. What do you think of it Ray?
Grr. Thanks, RBT. I really want that video camera but can’t afford it right now. Short Stuff’s tuition is due in a couple weeks. Ah, well, there’ll be more sales in a few months.
As for Short Stuff’s tuition, considering that public schools aren’t doing the job but we’re still having taxes forcibly taken to pay for them, I’ve got a bit of resentment going here. I want vouchers to pay for her education at a school where she’ll actually learn something but would be satisfied with a waiver for the school property taxes I’m paying. Since I’m not going to get either of those, I guess I’ll just have to let the rage build until I start shooting at public school employees for lack of any better options. Of course, the same can be said for the rest of the property taxes and income taxes that are confiscated from me for uses I do not approve.
They sure take their soccer seriously down in Brazil:

Geez, I just checked and found that the included 16 GB memory card is good for 75 minutes of full HD (1080p) recording. In other words, a clip less than 5 minutes long is a GB. It takes a long time to upload 1 GB on my broadband connection–something like 2.5 hours or more. Oh, well. I guess I’ll just start uploads before I go to bed. I don’t think I’ll bother with YouTube. I’ll just upload them to my own site.
If your videos turn out to be popular your hosting site might want a more money to cover the bandwidth consumed. Of course not putting them on YouTube minimizes the chances of them being popular.
Well, supposedly my account at Dreamhost includes unlimited storage and bandwidth. I think they have a prohibition on posting third-party videos but not one’s own videos.

They may be the paragon of hosting integrity, rather that resembling the stories one hears about such hosting agreements where problems arise inexplicably once significant resources start to get consumed.
