10:42 – It was 50.2F (10C) when I took Colin out at 0645.
I’d been nodding off all day yesterday. When I finally headed back to bed around 2115, I was suddenly wide-awake, even though I was completely beat. I lay there for 90 minutes or so, trying to pretend I was asleep. Finally, I figured the hell with it. I got up, went out to the kitchen, and pulled out a bottle of diphenhydramine (Benedryl) tabs. I took two 25-mg tabs and went back to bed. I woke up about 0615 this morning, to Colin’s whining. But that was the first decent night’s sleep I’ve had in what seems like weeks. Tonight, I’ll just take two of the 25-mg diphenhydramine tabs before I hit the sack.
I’ve mentioned Patriot Nurse before. I’ve mentioned some of my reservations about her, including the fact that she’s an anti-vaxxer and proponent of various other woo-woo medical practices. I’ve known a fair number of nurses, but never one that was remotely like her.
One of the things I didn’t mention is that there was a firestorm five or six years ago, with people claiming fraud and saying that she was not actually a nurse. According to them, her real name is Rachel Greene, and she has never been licensed as an RN in Tennessee. There is/was a Rachel Greene whom Tennessee licensed as a pharmacy techician, but even that license expired.
I didn’t think too much about this at the time, because there was one obvious logical flaw in the claim: nowhere did her accusers show how they linked the name Rachel Greene to Patriot Nurse. And without that link, the rest of their accusations were completely unsupported.
Then last night I was watching one of Patara’s videos. She mentioned Patriot Nurse as a personal friend, and casually dropped her first name as Rachel. Not definitive, obviously, but it does make me wonder.
Having watched many of the Patriot Nurse videos, my impression is that she’s a very bright young woman. Too bright to commit multiple felonies across state lines by claiming qualifications to which she is not entitled and then charging people significant amounts of money to attend the classes she teaches.
One possible explanation is that she is mentally ill. A couple of weeks ago, I sat down with Barbara and ran several of the PN videos for her. In them, PN ranged from smiling and bubbly and friendly to sullen and angry. The extremes were stunning. After the videos finished, I told Barbara that I wondered if Patriot Nurse was manic-depressive and off her meds. Barbara’s mom was manic-depressive, and Barbara had decades of experience with her mom’s mood changes. She agreed that it was quite possible that PN was in the same situation. Obviously, we don’t know for sure, but it would explain a lot.

Another gorgeous day on the Bay. Wife, Princess and GG all doing the usual Canadian Border Dance later today with the two cars. That was the original plan, then it changed to where I’d have to be involved, and now it’s changed back again. So as of this minute I don’t have to do chit.
I’m still hassling with stairs and balance and pain problems and didn’t get much sleep last night thanks to the Prednisone so I intend to do as little as possible today, watch the Pats-Falcons game tonight if only to see if the Pats defense has decided to play pro-level football yet, and otherwise eff off.
During the endless time-outs and penalties and commercials I’ll install CentOS 7 on the VA-issued laptop SSD and then harden it up real good security-wise. And otherwise read up on some firearms-related stuff and take it easy. It’s been a rocky week, kinda-sorta like RBT’s. It ain’t easy gettin’ old.

I didn’t lose everything (mostly home repairs and appliances) and am in an apartment for another month. A friend who lost most of her stuff in her house is living with one of her friends. Most of the flooding was in middle class and upper middle class areas, so people probably had friends/family to help. There were some low income apartments that got flooded, and they have been relocated.
I was under the impression that many tens of thousands were left homeless and adrift, also that a million? vehicles have been totaled by flood waters.

Intermission. Venue is plastered with legal no gun notices. Lower half of every door is covered with signs. Very cursory bag check and the laziest wandng ever. And it’s all bs as the city owns the land so restrictions are illegal. No one wants to be the test case, so they get away with it.

Yes. FEMA is paying for a LOT of hotel rooms and apartments. My friends that got four inches of water in their home are living in a FEMA apartment (they had flood insurance). They have demoed their home up to 24 inches. That includes all of the cabinets and countertops in their kitchen, bathrooms, etc. They got a FEMA check within a week. They are hoping to be back in their home by the end of November.
I would not buy a used car from Texas in the next couple of years.

FEMA did give us housing assistance. Less than 1 month of rent in our apartment, not to mention that the daughter and spouse are in another apartment – we can’t share due to their cats and my wife’s allergies.

Home without incident.
Wasn’t completely unarmed as I had a Gerber assisted open pocket knife (which I put in my wallet and held in my hand while being wanded) and a folding credit card knife in my wallet. I didn’t bring my normal EDC of a benchmade mini-griptillion and cold steel bird and trout on a neck chain. Didn’t want to give those up if busted. the others were $9 total at the TSA outlet in Austin.
Given the completely lazy wanding, I could have carried a small pistol appendix or jock, and just worn a big buckle to explain the beep. Still, it was legally posted and would have been a trespassing misdemeanor if I didn’t leave immediately. Given what the tickets cost, I wanted to avoid that. And we parked at the venue so I was never on the street. There are other venues where you park and then walk for 10 minutes thru tunnels or on the street. I’d probably have taken the chance in that case.
Mid day, no walk, gun in car, and not gonna stop doing things with the kids…

Will attempt to slide downstairs tomorrow and work on a couple of things, have some of wife’s homemade chicken soup, adjust my walker, etc. And then try to make it back up the stairs; harder each day lately. Hope the meds do something soon.
Also hope I can manage to check the mail and do the Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday night. Only a hundred yards away but it’s tricky once I’m outta the car, and I used to just hike over, of course. Too far to manhandle the walker and mostly uphill or up a ramp, also difficult lately.
So an old fart gets a new appreciation for what many folks have to mess with daily for years, or their whole lives. Every little change in elevation, every possible obstacle, and hassling with doors. Pain is one thing; paralysis another. Fuck this. I ain’t doin’ it much longer.

I grew up listening to all kinds of music; parents always had classical going, and I was also into rock and British blues. But remember Glen Campbell and Johnny Cash fondly from that era, too. Right after I got back from working on Uncle’s plantations, it was the disco era, so I had that going on in the background and in the local clubs all the time. But I was also listening to Earth, Wind and Fire, Boston, and ELO, which I still like, some of the melancholic notes and tunes from that melancholic time.
Off to the Land of Nod again, if possible.

As it occurred to me last night that we ARE THERE. Many people have pointed out that the Fall of the Roman Empire didn’t happen over night, and to the people living thru it, it just seems like always, but a bit worse.
That’s us. We’re surrounded by invaders who don’t look like us, who don’t speak our language, who come from lands we formerly ruled and exploited. They are no longer kept out, but welcomed in the misbegotten belief that they will become the new tax donkeys who will support us in our decline. They, however, have a different idea.
The other symptoms are well covered elsewhere- depravity, distraction, violence, breakdown in social norms….
The invaders will take the world down to the level they came from, simply because it’s easier to move downward than upward.
We’re IN IT. It’s already well underway. No reversing it, just leveling out the curve for some short time in some local places. Where are the monasteries? What will survive the burning of the libraries? And make no mistake, our kids won’t care, nor will their kids. They don’t know any better or different. They’ll be busy living their lives under the new reality.
So if it’s a given that the end is already well underway, and the next generations don’t actually care (did the grandchildren of the romans?) what can WE do? What should we do? How do we make the transition as beneficial as possible for our descendants? What do we do when we stop fighting it?

You’re far too pessimistic, Nick. Early victories are easy when your enemy has not even started to fight.
As OFD and others have said, Anglo-Saxons are very slow to anger, but we can be pushed only so far. We’re starting to see the first signs of that resistance from individuals. Over the coming years, that’s likely to intensify. Don’t be surprised to see stuff like firebombing mosques become commonplace.
The problem is that muslims, BLM, etc. are just the bully boys. The real enemy is the progs, and they’re harder to target.
Kill everyone who was in the student council in high school.

perhaps, I’ve been in a bit of a ‘poor me’ funk the last week. Not sleeping well, which is not normally a problem.
It just hit me last night though, that this is probably exactly what it looked like. Whether there is anything that can be done or not is debatable (in the literal meaning.) The barbarians are at the gates, but they are also inside the gates in huge numbers. They have no choice but to tear down what was built, because that is all they know. They will have to recover over time and on their own as our ancestors did. Perhaps there will be another renaissance in the future where the next wave ‘stands on the shoulders of giants’ as europeans did, but HOW will they discover the lost works? So much is digital now and will vanish into the aether.
And it was pretty depressing to realize that within one or two generations the ideas we hold dear will have vanished. Don’t believe it? How many here understand the lives their grand parents led? Why they did and believed the things they did, why they fought, HOW they lived? Many of them made sacrifices that are almost unimaginable to us, let alone our kids. Look at infant mortality, and early childhood disease. Kids today don’t understand living in fear of sickness. They don’t expect to lose 1 in 5 or more of their classmates and siblings. They haven’t seen whole neighborhoods wiped out by disease, whole towns abandoned, whole cities destroyed by war. (outside of blue state shitholes, and that’s not an example to be held up)
Someone recently pointed out a meme that our country was founded on anger at a TINY tax on just a few imports*. Compare that to the THIRD of our income we give up today. The amount of government intrusion and power we allow today would have been unthinkable just a couple of decades ago. Anyone else remember the phrase “Don’t make a Federal case out of it”? I remember when there was public debate about the constitutionality of searching student’s lockers at school without warrants. Today, they are searched, ordered, metal detected and surveilled without a second thought.
Sure, I’m a bit depressed and pessimistic, but I’m also sure that the decline and fall has already started. In fact it’s well under way. And given the general acceleration of events in the world, it certainly won’t take generations to lose it all like the Romans.

I’m a pessimist, too, and tend to largely agree with Mr. Nick and I have many days like he describes, being kinda depressed and frustrated by a lotta stuff. I also agree with RBT that we’re seeing increasing signs of push-back and resistance, and more and more Murkan derps realize our situation and are getting angry enough to do something about it. Hell, that was obvious from tRump’s election, and now we’re seeing that the more things change, the more they stay the same, WRT politics. Draining the Swamp is a tough job and I suspect it’s too far gone now. I also wonder some days if he’s actually doing any of that or just playing us for fools.
I also think we’re all trying to do what we can for our kids and grandkids and we worry a lot about their future; both Mr. Nick and RBT have been doing sterling work in this regard and are an example for the rest of us. Yikes, just keeping up with them and what they do in my imagination is a great ride. Probably can’t get to a tenth of that stuff right now but I’ve been keeping track. Ditto the women and their families who rarely post here (and I don’t blame them much) but are clearly busy walking the walk instead.
