Raining. We had a nice day yesterday, until dusk, then it started to rain. And it rained for a few hours, with some thunder and lightning too. But, we had two beautiful, unexpected days. If it rains today too, then that’s ok.
I did some work on my hobby website shopping cart in the morning, then did my big loop of pickups in the early afternoon. Stopped in a couple of thrift stores and got some good stuff. That’s in yesterday’s comments. Then it was kid taxi stuff until late.
Today I am doing some more pickups and signing the transfer docs for the wife’s boat in the morning, and some moving stuff and cleaning up in the afternoon. The later depending on rain or no rain. Can’t do much moving stuff in the pickup if it’s pouring down rain.
Later in the day I will load my truck for my hobby quarterly mini-sale. It’ll be nice to finally get back to a meeting, between the March hamfest and cancellations, I haven’t been to a meeting since the first week of February. I know that I value them by the way I miss going regularly. Plus, meatspace baby. And I get to demo my shopping cart for the Board. But that will be Saturday.
Today, I might also get to Costco to add to the stacks. I didn’t yesterday despite good intentions. This is not really the time to get complacent. The elephants are dancing. The world is changing. There will be disruption, but it will all be better if you have food and basic needs covered.
Stack.

The intent of the plastic piece is a cheap design to limit the noise of the water draining into the pan.
We had water issues in our kitchen refrigerator until I discovered the clog in the drain line. Removing the piece didn’t result in any noise increase that I noticed.
Our kitchen unit is still the $400 Whirlpool/Kenmore we bought from Sears in a hurry when we first moved down here broke and realized that Texas rentals don’t include the refrigerator.
I don’t remember what I sold to pay that credit card bill. Maybe I don’t want to remember.

Glamorous realtor’s life snuffed out in clash over Mercedes Benz that was all caught on camera
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14691995/Ashlee-Long-realtor-dead-Kendrick-Finch-Dallas-Texas-road-rage-killing.html
– see also ‘nothing good every happens after midnight.’ The DM uses “glamorous” for any reasonably pretty female in nice clothes.
So girl and boy have left a bar, penis boy is starting sh!te with people on the street. Belligerent. Possibly drunk and disorderly. She’s plucking at his arm to get him to go, talking to his targets to move them away. THEN penis boy is walking down the center of the street and swipes his hand down the side of a Mercedes as it slowly drives by.
Merc driver stops and passenger gets out with a gun. Penis boy goes “OH SHIT” starts digging in girl’s purse to draw his own gun. As he brings it out, and advances toward the defendant, defendant shoots at him and girl. Hits girl. Hits penis boy.
Cop giving testimony states that defendant started the altercation. Says it as if it’s fact. Defendant’s lawyer gets him to admit that the interaction started when penis boy swiped the car with his hand… F ing cop. F ing DA, F ing news. Penis boy barely mentioned, focus is on dead pretty white girl, hispanic looking shooter with priors is the automatic villian….
Car could have kept driving. Shooter could have stayed in vehicle. Shooter has a full sized pistol with a BIG extended mag. NOT his concealed carry gun. Driver and passenger both have “attitude”.
Penis boy could have left his gun at home. He was committing a crime when he took it into a bar. He could have gone home instead of trying to start something with everyone on the street. Could have kept his hands off other people’s cars. COULD have run away, or turned and left when he saw the shooter get out of the vehicle. Could have been carrying his own gun instead of making the girl commit the misdemeanor of carrying into a bar…
Girl could have stayed home. Could have left the drunk penis boy. Could have refused to be his gun moll and commit a crime by carrying concealed into a bar. COULD have called an uber or taxi and left the bar without wandering around the street.
Penis boy got his girl killed. Shooter let machismo land him in the defendants chair. Driver should be charged with felony murder if the passenger/shooter goes down, as he had to stop the vehicle and let the shooter out.
Armed self defense lessons- drawing from a purse is hard and REALLY obvious. When someone has the drop on you, you aren’t going to outdraw them. Drinking while armed is stupid and potentially deadly. Being a dick has negative consequences. Being next to a dick can get you killed. Shooter’s stance was not what people practice at the range (single hand, unsupported, while backing away.) Penis boy’s stance was non-existent, and he was moving toward the shooter/defendant before he brought the weapon to bear. Real world defensive gun use doesn’t look like the range.
Being young and pretty does not protect you from bad choices forever.
The cops are not your friend.

Not a problem here, as the beer fridge is in the basement, not the living area. I don’t mind at all if the drain is noisy, as long as it works. I did not appreciate having a tiny waterfall greet me every time I opened the fridge door.
My pal the Protestant was disappointed the new Pope wasn’t an African woman!
No. The process is the will of God, covered by the Dogmatic Covenant between God and Man.
Go watch “Dogma” in a few weeks when the rerelease hits theaters.
The irony of “Dogma” is that the flick is a love letter to the Catholic Church and its rules. Most of the protesters were Protestants, mostly upset about Rufus, the “lost” apostle played by Chris Rock.
The churchy type I worked with was not thrilled with The Buddy Christ concept either when I brought mine to the office.

“The ‘N’ in SNAP means nutrition” By Star Parker
https://reviewtimes.com/news/585119/the-n-in-snap-means-nutrition/
“SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, is one of the nation’s largest welfare programs.”
“And, like all welfare programs, it is massive, it has grown prodigiously over the years and it is inefficient.”
“The “N” in SNAP stands for nutrition. The point of the whole program is to help poor Americans eat and not forgo nutrition as result of insufficient funds to buy food. So why should government funds be used to purchase foods that are not fundamental to meeting the requirements of basic nutrition?”
“The program is funded by the federal government but administered by the states.”
“Now three Republican governors — governors of Arkansas, Idaho and Indiana — are joining the governor of West Virginia in seeking waivers from the federal government to permit them to remove soda, candy and other sweets from the foods that can be purchased with SNAP funds.”
Sigh. It figures that something meant for good could be perverted by some of those people.

“The Great Wall of Debt: How 40 Chinese Banks Vanished”
https://theblacksphere.net/2025/05/the-great-wall-of-debt-how-40-chinese-banks-vanished/
“As the market rebounds in America from the Left’s attempted takedown of President Trump on tariffs, 40 Chinese banks disappeared in a single week. That’s not just a financial hiccup—it’s a full-blown coronary.”
“The Economist reported that 36 of these vanished banks were absorbed by Liaoning Rural Commercial Bank, a move that’s less about economic strategy and more about sweeping problems under the rug. China’s preferred method of handling struggling banks is to “absorb” them—a sanitized way of saying, “Erase the evidence and hope no one notices.””
“Still, according to reports, 3,800 financial institutions now teeter on the edge, representing 13% of China’s banking system and holding a jaw-dropping 55 trillion yuan ($7.5 trillion) in assets. That crack may be too wide to patch.”
“This financial domino effect is tied to China’s real estate market, which has been stumbling under the weight of its own inflated promises. Many of these banks were knee-deep in lending to developers and local governments, making their portfolios about as stable as a house of cards in a wind tunnel. In some cases, up to 40% of their portfolios are non-performing loans—a polite term for money that’s probably never coming back. China’s situation certainly brings to mind the financial bubble of 2008 in America.”

In the not so distant future, the USA Dollar has lost most of its value and annual inflation is running 20% per year. Gasoline is $60 per gallon and rationed at 10 gallons per week if you can find it, so is electricity. Food and housing are comparatively expensive. The taxes have gone up including new personal healthcare taxes and such. Many people have left the USA looking for cheaper places to live.
Dan Kilmer is a former US Marine sniper with a failed shot at college. He joined his uncle restoring an old 60 foot long (20 meter) twin masted steel schooner down in Florida. As they got close to the end of the immense project, his uncle fell off a ladder and subsequently passed away. Dan inherited the “Rebel Yell” from his uncle and finished the project, launching the ship and moved to the Bahamas. He makes money by running small cargoes and helping salvage operations.
Dan Kilmer and his crew bought 100+ drums (55 US gallons each) of diesel from a failed NATO base and sailed them to a small coastal town in Ireland for resale for a good profit. After selling many of the drums for gold coins, a former SAS Colonel meets up with Dan in the local pub and hires him to take a select crew of former military men to the Canary Islands to rescue a group of sixty-six girls who were kidnapped in Ireland by Moroccan pirates. The girls are due to be sold for sex slaves in another few weeks.

Last year was an expensive capital gains year for me, and, based on the way the market moved, I imagine I wasn’t alone doing a lot of selling and writing a big check in April. It wasn’t just the capital gains but the extra Medicare tax on the gains as well.
Hey, don’t be a downer on my Medicare !
You had a great year then. You don’t pay Medicare tax on capital gains until your married joint AGI is over $250K.
https://legal1031.com/news/what-is-the-medicare-tax-or-net-investment-income-tax-niit/
I am putting both of my commercial properties up for sale tomorrow. Should I sell the large property with the buildings for the middle seven digit figure that I am demanding, I will get hit hard by the Medicare tax. And the Capital gains tax.
However, I figure that it will take me five years to sell the properties. Since both commercial realtors that I talked to refused to list the properties at my demanded price, I am just putting up a four foot by eight foot sign with “FOR SALE / 14 Acres / my cell phone number”.
Greedy, me ? Nah. I just want my piece of the pie. My wife and I have owned these properties for 14 years and put a lot of sweat into them. We just finished paying off the mortgage on the large property last year.
You are wise, oh Doctor!

Guess where you can find Papa Murphy’s HQ.
While in Palm Springs last month, I visited a Shakey’s for the first time in 50 years. Not much has changed with the food, but the live musicians are no more.
My wife couldn’t remember ever going, before the chain imploded.
Ah, Shakeys! The breaded and fried potatoes are beyond nummy. Forget healthy. I haven’t seen one in years, but they once had a stand at the Milwaukee Lakefront bread and circus Summerfest grounds where I could get a fix. Pizza wasn’t bad, either.
The food was decent at the location in Palm Springs, but the chain is low rent so, except for takeout business, hardly anyone was in the restaurant on a Friday night with a Lakers game on TV – kinda surprising but also not so much given the area.
Shakey’s peak came under the ownership of the Hunt brorthers who lost everything, including the pizza chain, when they tried to corner the silver market in the mid 70s.
Most of the stores across the country disappeared except for the West Coast over the years. Only one currently exists outside of California, in Pasco, WA, the “Tri Cities” of WA State, not far from Dad Cooks.
That reminds me – has anyone heard from him?
Right now is a terrible time to have a lot of cash to protect from inflation. Just ask the Gecko.
OTOH, the real estate market in Texas will be in trouble if the Legislature doesn’t reach some compromise on renewing the property tax rate “compression” before the session ends.
People will flip if nothing happens in the Legislature and the trim notices arrive next March with the full rates assessed.
I have not heard from DadCooks, and I pinged his emails a couple of months ago.

Loved Shakey’s as a kid. The buffet was awesome. Silent movies and player piano at our store, long communal tables… it was solid middle class families back in the day. Went to one in LA and it was homeless and street people along with office class eating lunch.

First, the gooberment is going to take 24% of 80% of the sales price. I’ll probably put most of the rest into Fidelity and Discover money markets. But the sale will not happen for years until we get the new bridge across the Brazos River, five miles east of the office. But, there might be a unicorn.
But then I will need to provide a new home for WinSim. This would work just fine for now. I still am thinking about offering the seller $400K and renting it out for now.

Shakey’s Pizza! In 1968, in high school in central Illinois, we’d occasionally take a road trip to the nearest Shakey’s in Peoria, IL. Great times. Later, 1982, my wife and I discovered a genuine Shakey’s Pizza in Tokyo, Japan. Same great pizza, same decor, same musicians, except with THICK Japanese accents. Years later, in 1995, Sacramento, CA, I discovered the ORIGINAL Shakey’s location. Everything was the same, except no singers, and everything was the same except for being somewhat shabby. Here’s How Kash Patel Responded When Sen. Kennedy Questioned Epstein’s Cause of Death

Should have asked Patel if he “believes” in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, that Oswald was the lone gunman, and that Biden authorized all the pardons–just to get a read on his “belief” system.
Patel is supposed to be intelligent. “Belief” does not belong in that answer. He has no basis for belief. The killer response from Kennedy should have been: “Fine, show us the same evidence that made you believe.”

If worst came to worst, we would just rent another vehicle and head south and east to our various places. It is only 1,832 miles back to my house from Helena. I always carry a couple of thousand in cash on these trips. I don’t trust credit cards any more after getting two cards cloned a few years ago.

Sure you have rights, but how badlly do you want to make that connection, boy?
My “Visa” right now is a debit card for my credit union checking account in Vantucky which I keep really thin and firewalled from the savings still in that institution.
I also carry Green Amex and ATM cards for our joint account and my personal checking, both limited to traditional ATM/debit activity only, requiring a pin.
If you drive down from Helena, the route through Salt Lake City to Lubbock has a brutal stretch from Moab, UT to Albuquerque that a lot of people underestimate until they try it once. I’d suggest going through Denver and sticking to major roads only.
Lubbock has Gypsies operating in the area, particularly southeast of town. Be aware and always keep someone armed in the car if you stop for gas/bio break.
