Sat. May 30, 2026 – and I was going to be good today

By on May 30th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Hopefully, we’re still in the little clear bubble surrounded by the “t-storms and rain” band across most of the US. Because I need to cut some grass. Yesterday was nice. Sunny. Hot. Clear. That would be nice today too.

I did my pickups, auctioneer visit, and hit the chiropractor and doc in the box. Busy afternoon. Cough changed after the z pack, and I’m not feeling better so I thought I should be proactive. Doc listened to my chest and called for an xray. Yikes. Nothing wrong though, and the other tests were negative so it’s just ‘Ima put ‘asthma’ on the chart’… then I watched youtube for hours. Eventually kid came home and I could go to bed. Can’t even sit out with a tiny little fire ‘cuz I don’t want smoke in my lungs.

Today I’ve got two auction pickups and they are in completely different directions. Honestly, I should blow off the one that has me starting out with an hour round trip south. The other one I can grab in passing on my way to the BOL without any trouble. And yeah, I’m headed to the BOL unless it’s raining. That grass isn’t gonna cut itself.

But first, I’m not getting up super early, and if I feel really bad, I might rethink today and just do a speed run tomorrow.

There’s always something that needs doing, and always alternatives too.

Stack. It’s easy.

Fri. May 29, 2026 – Short week, especially for me…

The national forecast has Houston in the clear for the next couple of days, and I really hope that the front just to the north doesn’t move south and change that. I could use the nice days even if I’m not feeling great. It was really nice yesterday. Sunny, clear blue sky, hot. Maybe too hot, but it’s Summer. School is out, so it’s Summer.

I am feeling better, but still not great. Still coughing. Still ‘half a bubble off’. Still snotty. I did get two pickups done. More aquatainers. Like gas cans, you really can’t have too many.

Today I’ll try to do the big TV pickup. I’m headed that way to do my remaining pickups for the week, so I might as well try. If I was feeling healthy and strong, I’d be stacking and clearing at the shop but I’m still not up to that.

I feel like I’ll be making a speed run to the BOL on Saturday to cut grass too. I won’t get another chance for at least 11 days, and that will be too long an interval. Assuming the grass grew at all since I was up there, and I’m pretty sure it did.

Tons of stuff coming up that is out of my control, and needs me to do stuff first, so I’m getting nervous and feel like I’m really behind with this getting sick business. Can’t do much about it at this point though.

Gotta keep pushing through.

And stacking. Water, food, security, health…

Thur. May 28, 2026 – well, maybe I’ll get something done today

If it isn’t raining too much. It rained off and on pretty much all day yesterday, which is the way it should be to really benefit us. Not much good for my plans though. I’m hoping today is a bit less wet. Cool is fine, it was low to mid 70sF yesterday. I’m good with more of that…

Did not get much done other than domestic bliss. Three loads of it for bedding and related. Plus cleaning, putting away stuff and general poking at stuff. My brain and energy are still not recovered, but I’m functional.

And I need to put some of that function to work today. I’ve got pickups to do. If it’s not raining, I’m going to try to do my missed pickup. They usually do incoming shipping on Thur and Fri, but if they are there, maybe I can sneak my stuff out. I really don’t want to wait until next Monday.

There’s always more to do, no matter what you try or who you are. Don’t be like me, get something done. And stack because it’s ebola season again.

Wed. May 27, 2026 – time to get back to it

Hmmm, national forecast for yesterday was wrong, so I hope today is wrong too. Rain and t-storms possible. I’d prefer the sun and clear sky of yesterday.

Of course, with me having ‘taken to my bed’ I can’t really complain if I wasted the nice days and now have less than nice days to do what I need to do. I will anyway. Complaining about the weather is a universal right.

Since I’ve been ignoring my, well, everything for the last several days, I’ve got some catching up to do even if I’m not 100%. One of those things is picking up an 86″ monitor and getting it back to my shop. Yeah, that’s a big motha, and it’s industrial build quality so it’s heavy too. I’ve got a couple of other pickups to make this week and my client needs a troubleshooting visit too.

My ability to do anything next week is constrained. More on that later, but I have a couple of things that I need to do this week.

And there is always more to do, even if I kept up with the list, which I haven’t.

Stack. It’s the easiest.

Sun. May 24, 2026 – probably sleeping in again

Cool, wet, and probably raining. Warming if the rain stops. Yesterday was rain off and on all day, and part of the night. I slept.

And slept. And slept some more. I did do one load of laundry and I took both trucks to get their emission testing done, but then I slept.

And that’s my plan for today. Moving means coughing and nose draining, so I’m staying put.

Stacks mean the household will run without me.

Sat. May 23, 2026 – still not feeling great

Cool, then warm, then hot. Humid all the time. Yesterday hit mid 90sF and was sunny and clear. A nice day, which I spent indoors. I’ll spend most of today indoors too.

Slept as late as possible yesterday, then finally got out of the house for a few minutes. Made an appointment for today to do smog on both trucks. That’s it, besides reading and auction stuff. Nothing but blowing snot, trying not to trigger coughing fits, and moving slowly. Fun times.

More of the same for today too. Joy. I do have to get up and out to do the truck thing, and I might feel up to some other light work. We’ll see.

Stack, so you have stuff when you’d rather not go anywhere or do anything.

Fri. May 22, 2026 – last day of school

Cool and clear but wet later? Maybe. Or we could be through the rain for now. It’ll certainly be moist. We had some sun late in the day yesterday, but it was mostly overcast most of the day. Spring showers and all that.

I did sleep in, and felt better when I got out of bed, but I’m feeling poorly now. Cough got worse throughout the day and so did the feeling of being ‘sick’. Spent the afternoon driving around doing pickups, then dinner with the kid and her friends, then bedtime.

Today I’ll sleep in again, and maybe do a pickup, but probably not. Probably I’ll just go back to bed. It “wastes” a full day that I really need to spend at least partially doing stuff, but I will save the time by getting better quicker vs dragging this cold or whatever it is out by not getting enough rest.

I’m not in any condition to do anything demanding.

At least I’ve got stacks if I need something.

You should too.

Thur. May 21, 2026 – more stuff to do

Cool to start, but warming soon. If the rain holds off, maybe even hot. Yesterday afternoon the rain cleared out and the sun shown down on a very nice afternoon. Cool breeze made it even better. I could use some more of that.

Didn’t get much done in the morning. Slept in along with both kids. Wife didn’t wake me on her way out. Did the Dr appointment, then did my scrap run (another $146 in aluminum scrap), then two pickups. Hit Costco for cake and flowers. It was eerily empty and quiet. The gas pumps were free too. ($3.67/gal) I asked the cashier if it was too quiet and she said it had been slow all day, then volunteered that “People are all out of money.” I’m hearing that more often lately.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups that I need to get done. And we’re doing dinner for the kid tonight. She wants sushi which I don’t make, so we’re going out. Trying to fit something in around the kids’ school activities and work is taxing.

Both of my pickups yesterday had stuff for the stacks, including water storage. Yup, it’s 12 years since ebola 2014 and I’m still stacking… you should too.
