Thur. Apr. 2, 2026 – no japery for you!

By on April 2nd, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Well, it wasn’t entirely clear and sunny yesterday. Some parts of town got a lot of rain, but it didn’t last long. I saw the result but not the actual rain… W got rained on though. Nothing at my house. I’ve got a feeling that today will be similar. Some people are gonna get wet. Some of us will just sweat.

Got a little nap, then headed out. One pickup, client’s house – success, second pickup, shop to unload, home. W made dinner. I wasn’t in the mood.

Today won’t be anywhere near that busy. I have to make a trash run, go to the shop, and I’ll try for the cat recycler if they’re open. All in the service of the list… and if it’s not raining, I’ll do more cleaning and moving with the goal of getting more stuff out of my storage unit. It’s cost me $500 more than it should have, but I keep finding other things to do.

Lists. I’ve got ’em. We’ll see if that makes a difference.

Stacking never lets me down…

Wed. Apr. 1, 2026 – Fool’s Day? A day for foolin’ around? A day for japes and mischief…

And I’ll sit it out. Cool to start, warm later. It was very moist last night and the trend has been rising humidity all week. We’ll get rain at some point. As long as it stays relatively cool, even the high humidity hasn’t dampened my love of our current weather. More please.

So I spent the morning doing stuff, then went out to do stuff. And indeed, some stuff did get done. Not all the stuff, or even most of the stuff, but some stuff.

Today, I’ve got to do my speaker install at my client’s house. I’ll do a pickup on the way there (most expensive item on the invoice? $15 for Tide powder) and on the way home I’ll grab another pickup of some other household stuff. I can combine trips, and they are mostly a big loop to the northwest, and back. That saves money and time.

I’ve cut back on buying. There’s less stuff I want or need, and there are fewer auctions tempting me. Plus, some are just farther than I’d like to drive nowadays. With the decrease in sellers, it’s harder to combine trips, especially to distant places. When I started, I could combine 3, 4, 5 or sometimes 6 pickups in one loop down to Dickenson and back. Now I don’t go to Dickenson unless it’s a fantastic deal on something I really need.

There are changes in the secondary/reseller market. They don’t benefit me, the buyer. We’ll see if they even survive or if we go back to a time when only a few big retailers were doing it.

Things change. That is the only constant.

That and the prudence of stacking of course!

nick the prudent…

Tues. Mar. 31, 2026 – what are ya gonna do?

By on March 31st, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Another great day. At least weatherwise. Today should be just as nice. Mid 80sF in the afternoon, but fairly dry, and some clouds in the morning. More please.

Yesterday ended up being a bit weird. I really didn’t get everything I’d hoped to do done. Called it a day early so I could cook dinner (pre-wuflu pork chops.) Everyone was in a mood though, and I spent most of the evening ignoring everything and everyone.

Grump.

Today, maybe I’ll get some productive work done. I’m waiting for delivery of my client’s speakers. I’m hoping to install them tomorrow, but we’ll see. In the mean time, the list is long and my patience is short.

But I’ll soldier on because that’s what we do.

That and stacking.

Mon. Mar. 30, 2026 – yeah, another week begins

By on March 30th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Whoohoo, supposed to be another few days of clear. At some point, we’ll be worried about it being too dry, but for now, it’s glorious. There were eventually a few puffy clouds in the sky, and some variable breezes, but it was mostly blue sky and moderate temps. Moar plz.

I slept in a bit, then did some work for my client. After that and some auction stuff, I finally got out of the house into the great weather. I headed to the shop to continue breaking down the “environmental monitoring stations” into scrap, salvage, and “take it to the next hamfest” piles. If I wait until afternoon, I can stand in front of my roll up door, with the truck backed in as a workbench, and be out in the weather but still in the shade. It’s nice.

I did finish the breakdown. Harvested some good parts for the hamfest, my own use, and to sell on ebay. I ended up with a box of “high quality” boards too. That means they have gold, lots of gold, on them. Gold pins, gold ground planes, gold plated connectors. When you build for .gov contracts, you literally gold plate it. To be fair, it’s radiation monitors and some other stuff which might be pretty important, and it’s in an enclosure that will let air in. Gold doesn’t corrode and conducts really well.

Modern electronics still gold plate stuff but they use super thin plating, and lesser alloys of gold. These boards are the good stuff. Rich color, heavy plating. Radios, healthcare, and commercial telcom and networking still get the good stuff. Recyclers know this and pay better for older boards and modern telcom boards.

I’ll also harvest the pins and gold plated connectors. There are a lot of pins because each of the half dozen modules connected to a backplane. I filled a gallon bucket with the multiconnectors and now I need to pull the pins from the blocks and snip them to just the gold plated part. I’ll put the pins in a jar. That will take some time, and I’ll probably do it at my desk at night while watching youtube.

I loaded everything on the truck, then threw a bunch of catalytic converters on top. I’ll try to move those today too. Should be a good payday at the scrap yard.

I’ve also got one pickup. I finally won a blacksmith’s post vise. Wanted one for years, and two were in auctions last week. Sometimes it goes in spurts or clumps like that. Long term desire is to set up a forge and do a little blacksmithing. Used to be, every farm had a forge and someone who knew how to use it for simple stuff. I’ve bid on a couple of farm forges, but they don’t come up very often, and they are very desirable.

Who knows if I’ll ever get a forge set up, but I’ll work on collecting the stuff just in case. I have a lot of projects and plans like that.

Stack some stuff that you can DO STUFF with.

Sun. Mar. 29, 2026 – almost time for eggs and candy

By on March 29th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Well, it might be wet today. Or not. National forecast says ‘clear’ but Houston has been saying ‘some clouds and looks like rain’ when I look at the sky. Either way, I’ve got stuff to do. It was very nice yesterday despite some clouds. Shirt sleeves comfortable all day and into the evening. It was a bit cool and overcast in the morning, but I’ll take that to get gorgeous afternoons.

I slept in, then went and did pickups. Chatted with my consignment auctioneer but they still don’t want my stuff. I’m going to have to find another seller. Oh well. Then I headed to my shop to unload the lathe. It went without incident, and nothing even sketchy or pucker inducing. Just slow and steady.

It’s on the concrete in the shop and now I can move it around. I got a chance to see the motor nameplate and it is 3 phase. That means running a VFD or a static phase converter. I’ve got both, and if I was keeping it, I could set it up with the VFD. I might put the static on it to test and sell it if it’s the right capacity. I had a guy want to buy it off the truck but his english wasn’t good enough. I gave him my number and told him to text. Hopefully he’ll get some help with the language…

I then spend a couple of hours breaking down scrap. I got about half way through the remaining pile. I’ll be back over there today if it’s nice out. Another month’s rent on my storage unit is due on the 1st, and I REALLY want to be out of there. I need to make more room at the shop though. That’s job one today and Monday.

There is always more to do.

Always room for improvement.

Not always room for more stacks. Do it anyway.

Sat. Mar. 28, 2026 – weekend’s just two more days to work

By on March 28th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

But I won’t be getting up early on this bright beautiful day. I hope it’s a bright beautiful day anyway. Each day this week has had a bit more clouds, a bit more humidity, and a bit more heat in the afternoon. Yesterday was no exception, so today might be somewhat less than clear, if the pattern holds. Still, it’s been a very nice Spring so far.

I did my pickups yesterday. The big one was a great auction with tons of the kind of stuff I like. I won a Powermatic lathe, that looks complete although it didn’t come with a chuck. I’ve got at least one in storage though so if the motor runs I’m golden. It’s still on the truck because I didn’t want to unload it at the end of a long day. We loaded it with a forklift.

The welding machine needs a few things, like some new cabling, and the optional spot welder module is damaged, but there aren’t any signs of things that can’t be quickly and easily fixed. I have to replace the conductors that had the rubber rot off before I can fire it up, but the Millermatic 200 was possibly the best welding machine of its time (’80s and 90s) and is a rock solid design.

The other stuff I got included a set of welding cables I can use to make repairs, and I’ll scrap out the rest with damaged insulation; several hundred feet of heavy duty extension cords; and some vintage turntables. Nothing very valuable, but I’ll either fix and flip them or sell them for parts. Oh, and I got a Delta 12″ planer that doesn’t look like it was ever used. I’ve been trying to buy a planer for years. That was one of the last woodworking machines I needed to build out a full shop.

I’ve got a couple of auctions to pick up from today, all smalls, and mostly books. And I’ve got to unload the lathe. Then I’ll either keep working at the shop, or try to knock some more off the list here at home. We’ll be at the BOL next weekend, and the kids have stuff to do in town today and tomorrow.

Keep stacking stuff, especially stuff that lets you go your own way and reduces your dependence on others.

Fri. Mar. 27, 2026 – so I bought some things…

By on March 27th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, ebay, march to war

Hoping for another beautiful day. I’d take a bit less bright sun, and a bit less humidity than yesterday as they were a tiny bit too much. But then again, it’s Spring and it’s supposed to be sunny and moist. Since I’ve got a pickup that can’t wait, I really need it to not rain. National forecast says “clear sky” but we know we can get localized showers in Houston anywhere and any time.

Did some stuff yesterday. Got the scrap that was in the truck dropped off. It’s definitely worth doing, and I’ve got just as much waiting for breakdown. Other than shuttling the kid around and auction stuff, I didn’t get much done. Some domestic bliss. My chonies are folded and put away, as well as the rest of my laundry.

I did some grocery shopping since I needed to pickup a prescription anyway. Soda, juice, snacks, and various things mostly for the kids. Not a cheap day. Only one item was on sale. Kid cost me $500 in doctor visit (eyes- so no insurance) and we haven’t even bought contacts or glasses yet. Dang kids with their wanting to see, and eat.

Today I’ve got some pickups to do. It’ll be a big loop day. I won a nice wood lathe, a dirty, crusty welding machine, some other shop stuff, and several items of classic audio gear. I thought I might need a trailer but I should be able to fit it all on the truck. Gonna be a challenge and some lower back strain… but I’m used to moving heavy things slowly and with minimum effort.

Once the big stuff is loaded, I can make room for the little stuff, like three more propane tanks, and do a couple more pickups. Sometimes, when the opportunity is there, you have to take it.

Propane lasts forever, the 15# BBQ bottles are fairly convenient to move, and I can run lights, cooking, heat, and power generation from them. I’ve got a lot of bottles. I’ve also got the adapters and even some certified refillable 1# bottles for the stuff I standardized on using the small bottles for. And of course the BOL runs on propane, so there is continuity there. Pro tip- put the bottle in a milk crate to keep it from rolling around in the truck or tipping over.

Most of what I bought was for me or the BOL, but there are a few things that were for resale if they’re not running. The lathe for instance, might have a three phase motor. I’ll probably part out the tailstock, banjo, and mounting plate if that is the case, because just those three things sell for over $500 on ebay, and I bought the lathe for $50. Now I’d love another lathe, but I’ve already got a couple, and I don’t need a project. We’ll see. Money is good, but I do like stuff.

Keep working to improve your situation, and stacking what you’ll need.

Thur. Mar. 26, 2026 – yep, another day

Another beautiful day. Yesterday was nice. Today should be nice. We are seeing a bit of overcast and sometimes that has to burn off first, but we’re still rocking a gorgeous spring. More please.

Had a pretty busy day yesterday. Did my morning stuff, then headed out. Pickup and chat with one of my auctioneers. Good guy. Bit of a low key prepper. He’s still around and lots of people have fallen by the wayside. Then it was off to my client’s house. Changed the TV out for a new Sony. Spent some time poking at the IDE for the control software and made the changes needed. Got it under control. BTW, there are menu choices for disabling the always wifi, the microphone, and the CAMERA. You can believe what you want about whether they stay off.

Client asked me to take a look at why the speakers in one room weren’t working. Turns out he was rocking out so loud he blew up a pair of Boston in ceiling speakers… I’ll be replacing them next week. Maybe I can find some with a higher power rating.

Then it was off to another pickup. Had a nice chat with the owner. I mentioned him when he was first starting out. Smart guy from Africa here in the oil business, and then started his own business reselling. It’s been a year and 3 months and he’s still here. He’s one of the few guys getting good lots to sell at the moment.

There is definitely a lot of turnover in the reselling auctions and in the various models of reselling retail too.

I hit the Goodwill bins on the way home from there, and then stopped to throw the dead tv in a dumpster I have access to.

Everyone was busy so dinner was frozen burritos for me. Food is food. I love to eat well, but I am pretty fond of eating. I was thinking about it and a lot of people don’t seem to get it. Food is what you need to live. There’s no good food, bad food, junk food, clean food, dirty food, it’s all just food. Shut up and eat, and be thankful there is food on your plate. Take joy in good food when that’s what’s on the menu, but also take joy in having food at all.

Prime steak one day, sushi the next, does not mean you can turn up your nose at frozen burritos. Or meatloaf, or just beans and cornbread. Well you could, but that would make you a d!ck. Don’t be Dick.

Stack, so you will have good food to eat.

Wed. Mar. 25, 2026 – busy day today

By on March 25th, 2026 in cooking/baking, culture, march to war

And a gorgeous one, if we are lucky. Yesterday was another fantastic weather day. Warm, gentle breeze, sunny. It started with some overcast but cleared up again, and finished strong. More please.

Gave my morning to science. Two pop tarts, one packet, took me out for a couple of hours. Won’t be doing that again. Waffle with maple syrup didn’t hit me that hard. Having the monitor helps quantify what used to just be a feeling. Science b!tches! It’s what’s for breakfast!

In the afternoon I poked around the house and waited for my delivery, which actually came right on time. Then I headed to the shop to do more scrapping and disassembly. Dinner was sushi. It isn’t as good as it used to be. I even managed to get a little domestic bliss in by doing laundry before bed.

Today I’ve got a pickup on the way to my client’s house, then a TV to install and changes to the control system to blunder my way through, and a pickup on my way home… Combining trips saves gas and time.

On the plus side, I can do a quarterly invoice. Money is always good. Having enough is a prep.

The trouble is deciding what is ‘enough’.

Stack. Work. Learn.

Tues. Mar. 24, 2026 – don’t look Ethyl! But it was too late…

By on March 24th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Another beautiful day. Yesterday. Today. And supposed to be clear for a couple more days too. I’m loving this weather. This is now the 4th? 5th? gorgeous day in a row? Yes please.

Did some stuff. Broke down some of the scrap stuff I wanted to, but only about a third. I’ll be back at it today. Or maybe I’ll do stuff around the house. Client’s TV is supposed to be delivered today, between 3 and 5pm, but I don’t want to miss it if they come early. I better stay close.

So that’ll be me today, hanging out and waiting for a delivery. I can do stuff here, the list is long after all. The list never sleeps.

But I do, as much as I can.

Which is funny, because I also do as much as I can. And stack.
