More hot and humid? Or more overcast and relatively cool? Only time will tell. Yesterday was hot and humid when the sun came out but it got cold and windy before too long. And I set up the umbrella for shade… But just as I finished up it came down in buckets.
Fortunately, I had finished for the day. Well, with brick removal. I’d have done another hour or two of carpentry getting ready for today if I didn’t need to make a supply run to Lowes. I got the whole in the wall covered with plywood to keep the rain and critters out overnight, and did my run. Neighbor drove his truck so I didn’t need to unload my window from mine. I bought gas and dinner.
Today I need to be weather tight by about 6pm at the latest, and it’s definitely doable. Getting started in the morning will help, but honestly, morning or afternoon, I’ve only got so much gas in the tank, and when that runs out I’m spent. If I had Saturday here I’d have no worries. As it is, I think it will be tight.
But we do what we can. And work on improving…

New vaccines are definitely placebo-tested. Otherwise, you would not know if they worked. However, once a vaccine is proven effective, later vaccines against the same disease are tested the existing one. After all, a new vaccine is only useful if it is better than the old one.
The anti-vax crowd distorts this, in order to claim that there is no placebo testing.
Vaccines have saved so many lives. Does anyone really want polio back? Smallpox? Measles? Oops, I shouldn’t mention measles, because anti-vaxxers have been successful there…

What genuinely is unusual, is the lack of rainfall. Dry years happen, but the climate extremists take it as proof that we’re all gonna die. However, we had more than an inch of rain last night, which is a lot for us. So that narrative should also be at an end.
Speaking of stats: ChatControl in Europe. Scan people’s messages and files, and match “indicators” against a database of indicators derived from files they want to detect. These indicators are, by definition, imprecise. What is the false positive rate?

Well, at least here’s something we can agree on.
Way back in 1990,-ish they implemented drug testing at Digital Equipment Corporation. The tests of the time were not the tests of today (if that matters. False positives are still a thing).
It was a company full of very smart people, and mostly libertarian, and this did not sit well. The very smart people pointed out that they would be catching more innocent people than guilty with the testing. It may even have been the beginning of the exodus from the company.
But executives saw the test as black-and-white, and an easy thing to do. The loss of my career and my family’s financial stability at the hands of a minimum-wage lab tech didn’t seem to bother them.
Fortunately (?), the company ran into financial difficulty before they went through the expense of that.
I suspect so. Just like the person who bought building across the street from our house and started collecting junk cars. I called the city many times for the smallest infraction. If someone parked on the street, which is not wide enough for parking, I called the police. If they made noise at night I called the police. Yet the place continued to exist.
Finally I called the state police on the place as many of the cars were questionable. Turns out that most of the cars were reported stolen and the place was running a chop shop inside the building. When the state police got involved the people, and the vehicles, were gone within two days.
I think for some reason the city was ignoring the place or there were some kickbacks involved. Same as the drug distributor.
I vividly remember the polio scare in the middle ‘50s. When the vaccine came out it was three injections spaced a week or so apart (I don’t remember the time span). The injections were given at school and my memory is that the injections hurt. Everyone dreaded vaccination day. I knew people who developed polio, some case really severe. It was scary times.
I have had chicken pox, measles, mumps and probably one or two childhood diseases. None were fun and I think measles was the worst.
When I was in the USAF vaccinations were mandatory. In basic there were several rounds of injections, done by the gun, no needles. If a person flinched during the injection the cut was deep and bled a lot. But it was a clean cut and a few stitches fixed the problem.
When I left for the Philippines, I had three hours to catch the plane after my orders were issued. I needed six immunizations. I was given three in each arm, they hurt, and I spent 13 hours on the plane with aching arms.
I have had my pneumonia vaccinations and shingles vaccinations courtesy of the VA. I no longer get the flu vaccine. I did get the covid shots, which were probably a waste. I think I had covid before it became rampant. I was the sickest I had been in a long time and could barely get out of bed.
I believe in vaccines, with the exception of the covid farce. I think we were scammed, both in the vaccine, and especially in the mask stuff. The majority of people that died had other problems, some so severe an ingrown hair would have killed them. But the death got marked down to covid because there was a lot of money to be made. When so much money is involved, question the science, and wisdom, of the procedure.

I got the “6-pack” for an excursion to South America. Ouch. I only got the injector gun once when I was a cadet. That was back in ‘77. All needles after that. We flew to Chile, via Panama (which still had Noriega smoking buildings) on a C-141. We all had diplomatic passports. I can confirm the “ouch” factor. And to make matters worse I had had all four wisdom teeth removed two days before. I was still swollen in the face and had stitches in the upper and lower gums on both sides of my mouth. Yeh, it was a miserable flight. I never should have been sent on the trip. But they had major computer problems on the cargo and passenger manifesting computer, and I was considered the most knowledgeable and the closest to solve the problems.
My entry was in July 1969. Whole platoons lined up in two rows. Injector guns running at full speed. Line up, walk through, bam, bam, in each arm, sometimes twice. Penicillin shots always hurt the most. I have needed those a few times for severe infections, mostly in the breathing system. Maybe penicillin requires a larger needle as it may be more viscous than normal injections. Although when I give blood that is a big needle and it does not seem to hurt much.
I got the video of the new Highlander. Tow hitch is being installed. A new foot sensor for the rear hatch is required and is now offset to the left of the back of the vehicle. I think all my ducks are in a row, I have the deal sheet with final numbers, a cashier’s check for the full amount, and a plan to arrive tomorrow at noon to get the vehicle.
The salesperson was told no dealer markings on the vehicle except for the license plate frame, which I will remove when I get home. In the video the dealer sticker, in black, in the lower left of the back hatch can be clearly seen. I told the salesperson to have it removed or I will refuse the vehicle. He agreed. Both items are a waste of money for the dealer in my case.
I have to remove the garage door code/signal from the old Highlander and remove the wife’s phone from the old Highlander. I will install those on the new Highlander when I get home. I also have to cancel Sirius/XM on the old vehicle and activate on the new vehicle. I also need to get a new car wash sticker from the car wash place. Lots of stuff to do. Some of it I have to figure out how to do it.

Actually, just deleting the phone from the car system removes all traces of the phone. Fairly easily actually. Removing the garage door information is a couple of long button presses. The information stays in the garage opener, but the codes are removed from the vehicle.
Hopefully, the dealer will hook their computer to the OBDII port and wipe the information. Especially since I have three keys and only need to give the dealer two keys.
I just finished repatching the roof which was damaged in January by a windstorm. I patched with tarpaper and hope.Last rain (about 2mm/less than 1/8″) I got about 5 gallons into the house; fortunately I had seen the leaks and placed containers to catch it, hence the measurement. Tomorrow we have 25mm/1″ forecast, which gave me incentive to get back on the roof to put a more effective patch in place, as I can’t start the roof until August. I will let you know…

Yeah, Randall has it wrong. The USA House just voted to make Daylight Savings Time permanent for the nation. My congresscritter just voted for it.

I was in favor of eliminating the time change, but in the direction of “standard” time all the time. “Standard” is what we used to call: Time. Standard.
If you go by the historical, dare I say scientific standard that Noon at any location is the time of the shortest shadow, which is basically how it was defined, DST makes no sense. It means go through that process, figure out local noon, then add an hour to it?
We also standardized on time zones, so we could fudge noon a half-hour one way or the other so people in the same area could have the same time. And we synchronized clocks so you could reliably predict train schedules.

We used the Fortran 66 compiler on the mainframes until the 1990s since it used about a quarter of the cpu that the Fortran 77 compiler used. Cpu minutes on mainframes used to be expensive, a port would cost me around $2,000.

A friend suggested that I contact Ford Customer Relations to see if they would help with the cost of the engine replacement in my 2019 F-150 4×4. So I am on hold with the second person there. I am still blown away with the $16,600 engine replacement cost with only 65k miles.

And the plan has changed. Checked in with the contractor and he can’t be there until noon. I’ll spend the night up here, where I have aircon, and head home early tomorrow.
I think I’ll skip the tiny little fire and just go to bed. I’m really glad I’m not driving home tonight.

I’m eating my dinner while the laundry runs. Spiral sliced ham, hawaiian rolls, and canned asparagus. First time trying canned asparagus. It’s not horrible with a little pepper, salt, and garlic salt, although the texture is mushy. I love fresh asparagus. I’d eat it again, although I don’t know if the family would.
Definitely gonna crash early. As soon as I can move the clothes to the dryer in fact.
My work shorts were so grimy from sweat and dirt, ash and creosote, that I have had them soaking in a bucket with detergent for 2 days. I agitate them when I think about them. Now I hope they come clean in the machine. The bucket water was chocolate brown.

Oh, I wasn’t kidding about the frog legs. They are one of my favorites. Lightly battered and deep fried, they are a lighter version of chicken legs. I like to dip them in butter, but soy sauce or the sauce for the gyoza works fine too.
