So, is it gonna be hot and humid? Almost certainly. And sunny too. Like yesterday. We did get the tiniest bit of moisture from the sky as I was driving around, barely more than you’d get if the guy in front of you used his windshield wipers… but it was cooler after dark. And that was nice.
Spent the morning doing auction stuff, and office stuff, then headed out to do pickups, a trash run, get some stuff from my secondary location, and swing by Habitat to see if they had what I need for my big project at the BOL next week. They did. There are several big picture windows and today I’ll find one that is the exact size I need. Well, I should say a size I can work with as I’ll be making the opening to fit the window.
I’ve also got shopping to do at Lowes for materials, and I should hit HEB for some frozen dinners. I really don’t have the energy to do much cooking when I’m alone at the BOL and working hard. I think the hardest part of what I’ll be doing will be just working outside. Some of the day, the chimney I’m taking down will be in the sun, I just don’t know for sure what part of the day. And I’ll be using fall protection for this project which adds a level of additional work.
The fractal nature of this project comes from using the chimney as a support for the cell booster antenna. I’ll have to finally get that moved. I have a plan, made the bracket a long time ago, and have the cable I need, but it’s a project all on its own. There is always more to do to do the job…
So I better get the shopping stacking part done today.

I just encountered a problem last night attempting to upgrade firmware on my TI 84 using my Windows 11 laptop. Windows refused to load the driver for the USB interface to the calculator.
I didn’t have a problem applying the last firmware upgrade using the same system.
What’s surprising is that Texas Instruments didn’t submit the driver to WHQL.
My wife’s crash pad is not far from there, but the cat lives at the house in Austin/Round Rock for now.

I had a related experience: It’s time to replace my wife’s computer. I knew roughly what I wanted to get for her, but checking all the details: mutual compatibility of the components, what substitutes were suitable for things that were out of stock, etc? That would have taken me ages, and is very error prone, but it’s easy stuff for an AI.
The electronics shop I ordered the parts from offers a nice service as well: They do all the assembly, test the result, and send you the finished computer. Cost is Fr. 180 (so about $150), which I figure is well worth it – it’s also insurance, because if anything were incompatible, they would catch it and suggest a fix.
About 85F at 8am, going to be a scorcher (105). Well, summer in the desert. We may get relief from a monsoonal flow next week.

Went out with the UV flashlight for the first time last night, picked off a dozen plus tomato worms. I left it too long, there was a lot of damage, but then again the tomato plants don’t fruit in this hot weather so there’s plenty of time for them to recuperate. I was listening to Coast To Coast last night and the guest interview was listing her three life threatening moments. Her third was replacing the batteries in her electric candles hanging from the 12 foot tall house ceiling. She got up on her ladder and immediately fell off it, hitting the corner of her kitchen island with the back of her head. The subsequent 5 and half inch crack in her skull caused quite a few problems including having to learn how to walk again. Fall protection is good but hard to work with.

Yup, the refineries in the civilized portion of the USA, the South and Central USA, are running at 96% capacity factor and have been since the first of the year. Several refineries in California have shutdown and are converting to tank farms. Other refineries are having to make up this difference and cannot keep running at this rate for a long time. Refineries are high maintenance and must be shutdown for at least two weeks per year for cleaning of the heat exchangers and replacement of the piping.
That said, I can buy unlimited gasoline at the Shell a half mile away from my house for $3.599 per US gallon so I am good.
I am not really at liberty to say what it is, but I would very much like it to be finished. It was supposed to reach its conclusion today, and I have just worked until 8pm, only to learn that others involved will now work further on Sunday, forcing me to pick up on Sunday and Monday where they leave off.
I am not gruntled. What annoys me most about the whole exercise is that the people nominally guiding it refuse to listen to the people actually doing the work (including me) about how the project could be accomplished in the most effective and least disruptive manner.

For some reason, YouTube has been suggesting a lot of tower climbing videos recently. Up to 1800 feet.
They tend to use the safety gear most of the time, especially when resting during long climbs. But there are technical parts of the climbs where its hands and feet only with no attachments. They even refer to it as free climbing and note that it’s allowed by the safety rules when necessary.
A couple weeks ago, I was part of an event where we used a rented 50 foot boom lift/manlift. I got dizzy just watching from the ground. The guy who used it was pretty good about wearing the harness setting up on Friday, but left it in his truck on Sunday for tear-down. I hinted I’d be more comfortable if he wore it but he declined. I will admit that there was more risk during the setup because assembly was at arm’s length and precision was required, but disassembly was easier.

I had an idea in mind for a logo/cartoon, and I never quite decided it was worth it to pay an actual artist, even though I have one in the extended family. It would be too expensive, and I’m not sure I would ever use it enough to be worthwhile.
On a whim, I searched for “How to use an AI to make a picture”, and ended up at Leonardo. I entered a prompt, and got a lifelike faked photo that was actually close to the rough idea, except it was a child and not a cartoon.
I altered my prompt, and while I could quibble about a few details in my mind, I have to say it nailed it. On my second prompt. “chubby cartoonish blond bearded explorer in pith helmet with big magnifying glass looking through parted tall grass”. The change in prompt was “cartoonish blond bearded” and “big”
I am, frankly, horrified. Ten minutes work including my searches, two tries, and better than 80% of the image in my mind, and very usable as is.
I’m betting I could generate the animated version in my head rendered as a GIF in short order. It’s where the explorer pivots from looking stage right to center, and parts the grass as the camera zooms in to see his face through the glass. I’m not ready to try it, yet.
I imagine I’ll succumb later, though.

The problem with AIs is not can they do a task. The problem with AIs is that they lie about doing the task and make things up. Kind of like dealing with a 5 year old.

Ack! The software I use on the Mac stopped deDRMing Kindle books after an Amazon update. The maker is working to fix it, but I’ll just have to wait. I like this software because it lets you deDRM Kindle Unlimited. I can’t find anything else that will do that. I hope they fix it like it was.
Happens once or twice a year. Annoying, especially when they don’t always honor the author’s statement that the book should not be DRMed.
I deal with it by getting most of my books from non-Amazon sources. It helps that I’m so busy and don’t have much reading time. It also helps that well over half of my reading is classics which I can get for free from Gutenberg and other sources.
Related, Kindles are becoming less and less useful. Kindle Fire is almost completely useless except as a platform for displaying content obtained from Amazon. Other tablets exist, in particular tablets which can display epubs.
AI-based image generation can be scary good, especially if you carefully build a prompt with detailed requirements.
I just did one image generation with duck.ai. And an author friend (Vic Tapscott) has used various software programs to build images of the characters in his fiction. He just posted a video/reel on his FB account that had his character speaking. Looked quite good.
Not sure what software he is using, but there is some generative video character-creation software out there that is getting quite advanced.
I know of fiction authors that use AI’s like duck.ai to generate story ideas and scenes as inspiration for scenes in their stories. They don’t use the text in their fiction, but use it to inspire ideas. The tell me that AI is also useful to research facts and scenarios for plausibility. Using the AI to extract info from many ‘old fashioned’ search results is much quicker than looking at the individual search results. Sort of like asking a research assistant to go out and find articles or information on a subject and summarize what you find. But much faster.
There have been reports of some ‘authors’ using AI to write complete stories and then submit the story for publication on Amazon. Other reports are that the ‘Zon’ is using AI to analyze submitted stories to look for AI-generated ones, so they can block publication of full-on AI books.

–One of the very first things I had to do when I started with Bigcorp was explain to the kids that pulling all-nighters was a sign of management failure, not a badge to wear proudly. It’s WORK. Do your work and go home to your LIFE.
I’ll work the hours needed, but the need better be extraordinary in the literal sense and not because you weren’t ready, the product isn’t ready, or you didn’t assign enough resources or people.
One of the very hardest things to teach people was that the event went smoothly BECAUSE OF all the standby, contingency planning, backups, and ‘what if’ wargaming. That doesn’t mean that planning was unnecessary. And just because they didn’t see any of the work for the months leading up to the successful event doesn’t mean you can skip that work or that it is unimportant.
Just because you were in the room on the night, doesn’t mean you know what made it possible.

– your friend is an idiot and doesn’t understand the physics and use of a boom lift. The harness isn’t to keep you from falling. It’s to keep you from being FLUNG OUT when the boom moves unexpectedly, like if you drop a tire in a hole while driving, or run over something, or if something falls and hits the boom.
As someone with thousands of hours in aerial work platforms and working at height, and someone who developed and taught the aerial work platform operations and safety program for my employer I can say I would NOT have allowed him to get in the basket, and if he insisted I’d walk off with everyone I could convince to follow me to put pressure on him and the other idiots.
