Cool but damp. Warming later. Weather yesterday at the BOL was hot in the sun, drippy with humidity, but cool breezes. Today, back in Houston, I just want a couple of dry days so I can take down and put away the Halloween decor…
I got a leisurely start to the day yesterday, but then did a bunch of work. After getting the truck unloaded and the bed set up, I did a whole bunch of yard work. I’d skipped the detail work the last couple of times I was up, and it showed. Time to get the string trimmer and blower out. Plus, tons of leaves on the ground and caught in all the underbrush, all of which needed blowing out so they don’t hold moisture and mold.
I followed that with mowing, and then string trimming and blowing again. It was getting pretty dark at that point, so I called it a day and put everything away.
Lots of stuff that didn’t get done, but it looked lived in and cared for when I finished the yard stuff. And for a place you don’t live in, that’s important.

Today I’ll be returning the trailer, and doing all the other normal things I fail to do on a regular basis. Well, I’ll be trying to do some of them. Maybe.
I’ve got stacks to sort, move, and store. I’ve got auction stuff to get ready. I’ve got kid taxi duties and pickups around town too. A busy day, like most of them.
So get to stackin’. Don’t get caught lackin’.

Well done. That is indeed important. I have a list of beautification projects for our BOL for the springtime, that will help it to look lived in and cared for, hopefully. We are lucky in having good neighbours who keep an eye on the place too.
The relative who was scammed is spending a few days with us while locks and phones are being changed at their home, and security is otherwise beefed up. It is sad to see how such an experience can make someone feel uneasy in their own home. Whipping is too good for the perpetrators.
Did D1 and additional child clean, cook and eat that fish? I would say no bragging rights unless and until they did…
D1 and backup child got photos, and returned the fish to the lake. S/he was too small to keep.

Up and moving. No roasted bean broth yet, sore back and sides. Between bouncing around on the mower, and holding the string trimmer/blower slightly in front of the body, my back got a work out. I’m feeling it today.
Time to poke some kids.

I asked for, and prayed for pipe-hitters.
Please, no thanks to me. I tried to volunteer to the military in 1956. I was declined when Dr. listened to my heart and said that it had a murmur.
However, after graduating from college with a BS Chem Eng degree, I did a lot of work for the military while working in aerospace.
I’d like to thank the families of the vets here, as well as the vets, as they sacrificed a lot, and that rarely gets recognized.

I came of age during the great “peace dividend”. I was one of the first generation to be required to register for the draft since registration was ended. Took the tests, did interviews. I had poor eyesight, and bad knees, and a skeptical attitude. They never called me back. The US military of the 80s was one of RIFs, serious culling of marginal personnel, and a very picky selection process.
I did what I could for the War on Terror as a civilian defense contractor. Dunno if it made a difference or not.

It was 65F this morning and it’s 77F now. The dew was so thick on the ground it was like it had rained. Yeah, it’s damp in the swamp.
I’m headed out to do some auction stuff before turning into a taxi. I’ll probably head to the school’s first Dress Rehearsal after that, to give the kid running sound some support. D2 will need a ride home afterwards anyway.

I am a Vietnam era vet, USAF, Blue Coats. Started out with 541 Khaki but migrated to all blue by the time I got out. Closest I got to Vietnam was Clark AFB in the Philippines. I did have to travel in uniform, got spit on, got called baby killer, refused service on more than a few occasions. It was a rough time for everyone. I did get orders for Vietnam but had an older brother in Vietnam so I got the orders rescinded. I got the orders again in a year but had a younger brother in Thailand so I got the orders rescinded.
I enlisted in the US Navy in 1968, the year before the draft lottery was set up. People thought it was strange that I had enlisted in the Navy, since my father was the Air Force recruiter. But he figured that any of the services would straighten me out. The local draft board was taking almost everybody, so I was essentially “dodging the draft”. The next year, when the lottery system started, my birthdate was in the 200s.
A few years later, the Navy sent me to the University of Kansas to get a degree in Engineering Physics and then to OCS. So to all you taxpayers, thank you for paying for my degree!
I mostly had a pleasant time in the Navy. I got into the aircrewman program, in the P-3 Orion aircraft, so I was never assigned to a ship. I like to tell the story that I spent 3 nights aboard a ship – but the ship was the RMS Queen Mary, which is welded to the pier in Long Beach. I did spend ONE WHOLE DAY at sea on a naval vessel – but it wasn’t a US Navy ship. I was observing our squadron dropping practice mines off the coast of Malaysia, aboard a Royal Malaysian Navy patrol boat.
Fun times!
It was a pleasure and an honor to serve the United States, and all you citizens. Thanks for the opportunity!

So much for representing their citizens. The invaders are causing serious problems in blue cities and states.
Trump is reputedly looking to bolster ICE with soldiers. I would not mess with the soldiers. They will be armed and probably with heavy weapons. And many police are former soldiers.
BTW, we, the USA, have done this before. We loaded millions of people into boxcars in the 1920s and sent them into Mexico.

Good rehearsal tonight. My plan to make everything significantly quieter worked as we can now hear the kids. Of course, they are still fighting against it saying the music needs to be louder. They even turned it up when I went down into the seats to hear how it sounded from the audience… but I busted them.
Every parent there wants to see and hear their kid. Not a rented backing track.
There is a max volume for the vocals, the point where the mics feed back. EVERYTHING has to be under that level, or it will literally drown out the vocals. The room and system have terrible acoustics, so the point the mics feed back is not all that terribly loud. The music HAS to be less, or we don’t hear the kids. This is plain common sense, and good practice, and math… but everyone that works in the room and program is used to horrible, loud music. And not hearing the kids.
I may be Sisyphus, but I would like to hear the kids in at least one performance before my kid leaves that school.
n
The answer to the music director is to give her her own monitor speaker and let her make it as loud as she wants. More gear comes out of my attic…
Tonight’s movie was Jerry Maguire. I liked it. Yeah. a Tom Cruise movie. Folks trash Tom Cruise because of whatever. I like his movies. Just like I like anything with John Goodman or Bette Davis or Joan Crawford or George Burns. To name a few.
So. The movie ends and the sound track over the credits is some kind of whiny Bob Dylan sorta song. Blech. Then…. sound track is listed by Ann Wilson. Hey, she’s half of Heart.
Whiny song ends and a guitar starts playing. Call me full of something but that’s the same guitar that opens Crazy for You.
Pretty cool.
This is the way.
I was always into lighting. But audio is pretty close to working lights to me.
I’m going to try an experiment tomorrow. I’m almost out of beer. Maybe five left in the fridge. I will happily drink them and then drink water. I suppose.
I’m not going to switch from beer to sugared KoolAid or iced tea.
141 calories per beer says the Miller High Life carton.. Coca-Cola is what? 150 calories per can? Nutrition wise they are both pretty much zeros. Price wise, soda is a little cheaper….. but for the price diff and calories, I’m going with beer for the buzz.
Anyway. This is going to be be like quitting smoking. It’s a habit. A couple of cups of coffee in the morning and then when it is Noon, time for a beer.
I seem to be swilling 10 or 12 beers a day. Not drunk, just slightly buzzed. But that’s like 1400 calories a day and hey, carbs are bad right? I think french fries have more nutrition than beer.
Anyway. My Dad quit drinking beer when he was almost 70. Don’t know why. But he did it, so I can too.
I don’t know why but quitting beer has been on my mind for a few months. Shrug.
@paul
10-12 beers a day is indicative of a problem.
The problem is obviously Miller High Life. You pop one and your taste buds are ready for a beer, and they get a MHL instead. Trying again and again and not getting a real beer is a vicious circle.
There are lots of better beers. The octoberfests are mostly gone (if you didn’t stock up), but the winter seasonals are out and it’s time for the porters and stouts. Or you can go traditional with something like Pilsner Urqell.
Remember, beer was invented because water is dangerous.
Wild-Eyed Leftist Women Fantasize About Killing Men After Trump’s Dominant Election Victory

“Razor Boy”
I hear you are singing a song of the past
I see no tears
I know that you know it may be the last
For many years
You’d gamble or give anything
To be in with the better half
But how many friends must I have
To begin with to make you laugh
[Chorus:]
Will you still have a song to sing
When the razor boy comes
And take your fancy things away
Will you still be singing it
On that cold and windy day
You know that the coming is so close at hand
You feel all right
I guess only women in cages can stand
This kind of night
I guess only women in cages
Can play down
The things they lose
You think no tomorrow will come
When you lay down
You can’t refuse
[Chorus]
IIRC, Ann Wilson was married to Cameron Crowe at the time he made “Jerry Maguire”.
In addition to Wilson, some really heavy hitters collaborated with Crowe on the soundtrack to “Almost Famous”. Highly recommended if you can find a copy cheap.
Hollywood hasn’t really trusted Crowe with big money since he blew out the budget on “Almost Famous”. His films have been wildly uneven since then.
I liked “Elizabethtown”, but YMMV.
And, yes, “Elizabethtown” revived Alec Baldwin’s career, for better or worse.

@paul, 10-12 over 8-10 hours really isn’t much, but day in and day out, it’s a lot of both money and strain on your liver. My buddy who owned a bar kept his daily average to about 1-2 beers per hour, and although he wasn’t getting drunk, it destroyed his liver.
As someone who quit 15 years 10 months and 5 days ago,* I’d say that if you are thinking about quitting, you probably should. It will take a while to get new habits to replace the habitual part. I tried ginger ales and beers, so I’d have something to drink at night, and some interesting flavors. I was definitely quitting the alcohol part, but the carb part was nice too.
A couple of sodas a day that I really enjoy is better than the steady intake, IMHO. I was also drinking the HEB instant Half n Half, iced tea and lemonade. One big 20oz serving to sip throughout the afternoon. that’s a very cheap and flavorful alternative.
The health and money savings are worth it, even if you aren’t doing it for the alcohol part.

So Pennsylvania Jewish voters would have voted for Holocaust II if they could get one of their own (sans-foreskin) into Number One Observatory Circle?
Can we swap them for European Jews? Maybe living next to the Muslim sharp-end would concentrate their minds?
On a related but a bit sideways note, true confession style..
A couple of weeks ago I did a pickup at one of my local auction houses. I’ve had a ‘chatty’ relationship with one of the guys working there, for a while, maybe a year? We’ve talked about giving up alcohol. He’s had treatment and is a “friend of Bill’s.” He’d lost a lot, but was holding it together and working, seemed well on his way back to “normal” living.
That day he was erratic and manic and hitting a vape non-stop. Clearly not himself, but I was in a hurry, so I didn’t comment, or even chat much. Pretty sure he’d fallen off the wagon or was fighting to stay on.
A few days later, I see him again, and he’s still disturbed. He’d been a calm and friendly and open guy for all the time I’d known him. He asked me “what I did to cope with a crisis.” I told him I didn’t have crisis’ any more, but I still had to make the choice every day. He asked what helped me stay motivated, and I told him “my kids.” “Kids, huh?” “Yep.” (I know from talking with him that he’s estranged from his grown or mostly grown kids, and ex, and family, because of his past issues.) Again, I was in a hurry, and full of pride for myself, and my adjustments to living without alcohol. I completely missed his cry for help.
A day later it occurred to me that he was reaching out for help, and I didn’t give it. I went back, but he wasn’t there, and hasn’t been there since.
I’m pretty sure he had an issue. Fell off the wagon, and either got fired, or is still out somewhere on a bender. I hope not, but the signs point to it. I’ve been feeling pretty bad about missing the cry, being too busy and focused on me to see someone reach out. I could have offered encouragement, or to call his sponsor, or suggest he do so. Or tried anything else. But I missed it. Blew it. And it’s been bugging me.

I believe that almost one half of the USA is insane. They believe that they are safe and can play any stupid games that they want to. They have no idea how dangerous the world really is. Worse, many of them do not care and just want control over the rest of us even while the world is blowing up.
I ventured this opinion to my wife and she said that I am an idiot. So take that with a grain of salt.
@Nick: Good on you for talking with him, even if you didn’t see the full picture. Life happens, and sometimes there’s not a lot we can do.
One of my neighbors has Parkinson’s, and is unstable on his feet. He has had two nasty falls (like: breaking bones and unable to call for help for hours), and really needs to be in a retirement home with staff on call. Nope, he wants to go back to his house and live alone. This will not end well.
How hard should we try to persuade him otherwise? Ultimately, he’s a grown-up guy, responsible for his own life.
As you say, it’s his call.
But you might let him know about my brother. He insisted on living alone way longer with Parkinson’s than he should have, and ended up falling and breaking his pelvis. That forced him into assisted living, and being bedridden for t he rest of his life.
I’ve also heard anecdotes that a carnivore diet really helps Parkinsons symptoms.
