Cool enough to start, but getting hot later. Yesterday started at 75F but ended around 95F, and it was still in the 80sF well after dark. Today should be similar, with the added spice of being in the national forecast’s “thunderstorms possible” zone.
I mostly did my non-prepping hobby yesterday. That took all morning and into the afternoon. And then it was too hot to do the outdoor stuff I thought I might get to. Some of that stuff will have to be done today, even if it’s hot.
So that’s my plan. Sleep in, then work. Joy. But rust never sleeps and entropy is the only constant in the world.
Some of my preps need updates and maintenance. Most of them in fact. So I’ve got a bunch of stuff to do.
You probably do too. Stack.

The Lord’s Day, but we are at W1’s parents’ house, so I am doing handyman stuff all the same. Just hung some Venetian blinds. Looking at how to hang a screen door to keep the mozzies out. After that, Oma wants new lighting in the laundry. Verily, mine cup doth overflow.
Have a day of rest, if you can!
According to ISW, Iran is selling this internally as a temporary delaying tactic.
Also according to ISW (and other sources), the main accomplishment of the attack on Iran is that Iran will now insist on collecting tolls on all shipping through the Straight of Hormuz. Which it didn’t do before. So that’s…not good…

Yoga wear was a cheating red flag for me in my classroom so I notice a lot more than civilians.

Squirreling with the processor in ways that would alter the output of random number generators run by other processes on the CPU wouldn’t be hard, and messing with output of PRNGs could be devastating in certain circumstances such as high end nuclear simulation.
I long ago came to the conclusion that the default PRNG built into the Visual C++ runtime accessed by rand()/srand() is some kind of malware. The legend is that BillG cookbooked it out of Knuth, but I’ve wondered if it was created and protected from deprecation by certain three letter agencies.

The US capability to take out the Mullahs without collateral damage was dwindling at a point when Iran was being evasive about their nuclear development potential following the B-2 strike last year.
I’m the last person to cheer lead for the freak show commands at Joint Base MacDill, but a decision had to be made.
If nothing else, the strike on Iran was a wake up call to the world about the US possessing this kind of capability without waiting for launch-on-demand mini shuttles or space-based lasers.

Home from getting our son setup in his apartment. It’s funny how he lived in a apartment for 3 years at school, but he wasn’t nearly as excited to decorate/setup that place as he was this one. I guess since the school apartment kind of felt like dorm 2.0.
I was reminded of how much of a bubble my local area is. High incomes and low crime. His apartment isn’t in a bad area, there are just a lot more amish around. Of course, south Alabama.
Paying movers to unload the U-Haul was the absolute right call. I am too old to carry crap up to a second floor.

It was hard leaving. You have to let them go, but it’s hard.
We are going back down next month to bring a few more things down and also for his birthday.
Female divers take it a notch higher.
When I worked on the University of Tennessee campus it was a 29.7 mile drive each way from my house. If I left at 6:30 A.M. I could make the trip in 35 minutes. If I left at 7:00 A.M. the drive was 55 minutes. I was able to leave work early and avoid a large chunk of the afternoon traffic, such traffic turning a 35 minute drive into 70 minutes. Traffic was worse coming home then going to work.
In and out of Oak Ridge, which I need to travel through unless I take a very long detour, there is the Solway bridge. That bridge backs up big time from work traffic. Especially workers leaving the plant. I use the term “workers” loosely as many are just getting a paycheck.
One time coming home I got into an accident with a guy on drugs, His fault 100%. The wreck blocked both lanes coming into Oak Ridge just before the bridge. Traffic was eventually backed up eight miles back to the interstate on Pellissippi Parkway. There were some angry comments on FaceBook, which there always is when the traffic bottlenecks on that bridge. I have seen traffic leaving Oak Ridge backed up several miles into Oak Ridge because of an accident on the bridge.
Sometimes there would be a wreck on I-40. Generally a rear-ender from following too closely. When I got to the wreck I would roll down my window and yell “dumb ass” as I passed the offenders. Many of them would wave at me with a single finger. Friendly folks indeed.
Welcome to the party, pal. You are successful in life, now you get raped in your Golden Years. Congratulations on having to pay the max for Medicare. When you start to draw SS, you’ll also get taxed on that since you were successful in life and have multiple income streams. You are forced to pay into SS, then when you draw it, it gets taxed. SS should not be taxable and not counted as income if you desire to keep working (like many folks now have to do to eat).
MrsAtoz and my milspec pensions plus IRA withdrawals, plus continued work, put us well above the taxation threshold. Yes, military pensions are taxable unless you have certified disabilities. I believe up to 85% of SS is taxable. Goobermint probably left the last 15% so RINOs would pass it.
I know people who proudly say “yep, I’m drawing SS” and it is hardly anything. Certainly not enough to live on. It keeps them in weed and wine.
People get a distinctive body when their diet is mostly weed and wine.
Up and moving. Super late bedtime, and uneasy sleep, plus I was awake several times this morning long before I needed to be.

Going thru my mail backlog, the online license plate renewal definitely failed. You can renew several plates in a row, and they are supposed to be paid for in total, but my not so uncommon edge case of radio operator plates fubars that. Someone decided that renewing the same plate number can only happen once per session, so even though it takes the info for both vehicles, it only charges for the second one. (radio operator plates are all the same number, your call sign, on up to three vehicles.)
I will try another session for the Expy registration.

I guess I can log in now and do that, and pay my AMEX bill too while I’m at it.

Beyond being a hotbed for T-therapy, Tampa has several tennis resorts in outlying areas which are training facilities for pros, and swim training can happen all year except for a few days in January.
Multiple Olympic swimmers came out of the area where we lived in the suburbs east of Tampa.
You’ve described half of the mommies in my immediate neighborhood.
Fortunately my VA money is not taxable, at any level. About 50% of my SS is taxed. Interest and dividends push me over the threshold. This year I lose a big fund, in my wife’s name, that MIL set aside for the son‘s care. Those funds will get sent to the wife’s oldest nephew, the MIL’s oldest grandson, and he can deal with it. That was causing me to pay taxes on $12K a year, although I did pull out the excess taxes for me out of the funds.
I will still get hit for 2026 SS taxable, 2027 should be much lower. But I am also fighting RMDs. Right, save your money, but we (the IRS) will force you to use the money and we (the IRS) will take a big chunk of it.
Yes, I bought into the myth that putting money in a 401K was smart as I could pay taxes on the money when my income was less. Nope, RMDs sort of blow that out of the water. I would have been better served by Roth IRAs but those sort of came along too late for me. Now I can’t use Roth IRAs because of the five year thingy and no earned income.
Sub-humans doing what left side of the Bell Curve sub-humans do. Destroy stuff then complain they have no nice stuff. Then demand free stuff.
That’s not the max. That’s the normal. If you have a windfall year, you pay IRMA on top of the normal Medicare B & D, and it’s a lot.
My 1% guy and I met last week. I’m going to do Roth conversions from my 401k/IRA this year. As we get close to the end of the year, we’ll figure out how much to pull out to maximize my drawdown but stay in my tax bracket. It looks like about$10 to $12k per year. If I break the bracket, it’s a little more income tax, but keeps me in the high IRMA bracket.
I was mistaken about Roth. I thought I couldn’t do it once I retired, but you can do conversions and if you work, you can do contributions. The five year limits still apply, so it’s not a good idea to convert if you’ll need access to the funds.
I won’t live to see that money, but my heirs will get it. The IRA residue will come with huge income tax burdens, but the Roth won’t. We’ll see how much I can shift over time. I doubt I’ll be able to do more than half before I die, unless there are favorable tax changes.

IRMAA
https://solidhealthinsurance.com/understanding-irmaa-what-you-need-to-know-for-2025/
IRMAA is a %^$$^=×!. I am concerned that I am going to get IRMAAd this year. Gonna cost me several hundreds of dollars a month.
Of course, Congress, especially RINOs, will do nothing about this. Every Congress-doosh has to have their little carve-outs of pork to pass any bill. Pork for me, more taxes for thee. SS and Medicare were designed for paupers. Tax crazy Congress has ruined the FUSA. Game over, man, game over.
I plan on leaving nothing to my heirs, but there will probably be leftover $$. It all depends on how soon the Mrs and I croak. Hopefully they will get our house to live in or sell. If it was just me, I could live just fine in a small house and count my doubloons. I’m not stinkin’ rich. If I was, I would set up trusts for all the kids.
The directions for my r/o system roughly say if it’s noisy, time to change the filters.
So I did. Still noisy. But hey, it takes a while to fill the filters and purge the air bubbles. I’m good with that.
Still gurgling water down the drain this morning. It should not be making any noise. I checked for leaks. I’m good. I ran a couple of quarts of r/o water for the dog’s water dish and it burped a bit of air. Still with the gurgling.
I turned the water off. Something under the sink passed gas. Burped. There’s a little box with three or four water lines. I think that’s where the burp noise came from. I wasn’t expecting any sound. I turned the water on and no more noise.
I’m not exactly sure how this system works. “Pressure differentials” seems sort of like a waving of hands…. and then the magician pulls a rabbit from an empty hat.
I can hear the little deep freezer humming. It’s not loud, about like a mechanical electric alarm clock. Just a hum but higher pitched. You know, the cheap clocks that had neon back lighting and a snooze button on top.
I guess I’ve had an air bubble in the r/o system for several months, since a power outage. The bathroom sink and the shower had air bubbles. It never occurred to me the r/o system would have a problem.
Live and learn. Or lear.
Well. Can you just stash cash around? Give some to the kids. Tell them where the rest is stashed. Get it out of the bank and 401k etc so the fine folks at Shady Groves do not know it exists.
I never expected anything from my parents. I always, since high school, told my sisters “take care of them and it’s all yours”. Then Mom bought a walk-in tub. Like you see on TV. It was like ten grand. They had a hissy fit. “She’s wasting her money!!11!!”. Then they emptied her bank account and vanished. And mailed me the keys to her van with a note saying “it’s your turn”.
I don’t talk to those creatures anymore.
Oh, believe me, they get plenty of “perks” while we are still alive and kicking and spending the doubloons. Our Disney cruise last year, the kids paid nothing, not even travel. We are going to Hawaii in July. They pay nothing, etc. The annuity is inheritable. If there is any leftover, the kids are in the will.
I don’t stash cash, other than hooker and blow money, around the house.
This is my plan as well. I’ve told my son I’m saving for me and the wife. I’m betting healthcare and taxes eat a good portion of my savings. I’m working to minimize as much as I can.
I’m going to contribute to his Roth IRA this year and in future years. That will let him save in other areas, or live a little better. Plus 40+ years of tax free growth.
I also want to do vacations. Both while he is still single and when he gets married and maybe has kids.
Heck, we gave him an iou for a trip for his graduation present. That will probably happen next year once he’s settled and has pto built up.
It’s a little easier for me than MrAtoz…I only have the one!

The IPCC is out of business but the stake has to be driven through it’s heart and the kill assured.
History will show that the legacy of political capture of scientific debate was the economic destruction of the EU and the destruction of the public belief in the ability of science to guide public policy in the United States. If the destruction is recoverable then history will also discover causes and assign blame, and all fingers will point to the communists in Russia and China and their willing tools in Western countries.
Hand-in-hand with the disinformation effort is the destruction of the educational system in the United States and the EU. Here the teachers unions were the chosen means to do so. The result is that the ability of university STEM graduates to understand the discussion in the link above has probably degraded more than 80% over the last twenty years–they are so ignorant they don’t even know what they don’t know, and think that “feelings” and “indigenous knowledge” are valid bases for running a multi-trillion dollar economy.

Decided that the back yard needed to be done, and since the sun was behind clouds, today was the day.
So. Need to replace the carb on my string trimmer. Then need to replace the fuel, which had become filled with water. Which meant mixing some 50:1 fuel. Then attack the overgrown yard. Some sprinkles of moisture from the sky, a little cool breeze, and an hour or so later I’m soaked to the bone and the yard is better.
Mixed up some limeade with salt for rehydration and did some auction stuff. There is some thunder rumbling and a bit more moisture coming down. I’m glad I got the grass cut.

BTW, I’m going to say that it was the worn out carb that was the issue. Specifically there is a rubber diaphragm that gets stiff and no longer does its job. Carb, fuel lines, filter stone, gaskets, extra primer bulbs, adjustment tool, and spark plug came to $13 delivered. Yeah, not gonna look for the diaphragm when I can do all that for $13. Still have to change out the carb on the second string trimmer. But hey, rain.

I won the bid on a small lot of fixtures/stands made from 8020. Most structural pieces are 2020. They were shrink-wrapped and the longest pieces of extrusion (only 4 pieces) were a bit under a meter so it probably didn’t get much attention. When I showed up for inspection and looked from a couple angles I started noticing the connectors and specialty parts and a few bags of unused parts. When I get it I will take inventory but I’m estimating ten cents on the dollar all told.

“Opinion: Automotive Privacy Has Become a Dismal Prospect”
https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/cars/news-blog/opinion-automotive-privacy-has-become-a-dismal-prospect-45135508
“Privacy has become a major concern for people as modern technologies continue growing more invasive. Nowhere is this more apparent than within the automotive realm, as driver monitoring systems and roadside surveillance have been largely normalized.”
“There are now an estimated 100,000 Flock cameras, which are automatic license plate readers, now active in the United States, up from just a few hundred in 2020. The network has proved incredibly controversial with the public and only appears to be getting more so over time.”
“America is likewise poised to require all new models to include driver-monitoring systems after 2026, something Europe already does.”
“Representative Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), who has been extremely critical of Flock cameras and previously attempted to defund federal mandates requiring automakers to install driver-monitoring systems, said previously that the only option left for civilians to was “mass noncompliance.””
“Massie framed the monitoring devices, which are slated to go into all new vehicles sold in the U.S. starting next year, as grotesquely invasive and a clear violation of American’s Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights. He stated they were tantamount to “kill switches” and a blatant affront to liberty. But he failed to get enough Congressional support to block their implementation. Having since lost to Ed Gallrein, in what was the most expensive House primary in U.S. history, Massie has taken it upon himself to issue warnings about a forthcoming surveillance state and criticize what he sees as a lack of genuine representation of the American people.”
