Thur. May 22, 2025 – Still busy, just different busy

Still hot too. It was a bit cooler yesterday and was even pleasant in the shade, with a breeze. Since the overcast held up for a lot of the day, temps didn’t climb as high. I’m hoping today is similar.

Did my doctor visits. Apparently I’m healthy. Cardiac, oncology, bloodwork, all good. Ruling out any major issues is a good thing. I’ll do my follow up colonoscopy in the next couple of months, and some allergy testing. That should answer any remaining questions. After all that, I can stride confidently into my next decade.

Did some shopping in between docs. Grabbed 130 media at the Goodwill outlet. That’s about half movies, half CDs, and some books and games. Most of the books and games will go to my auctioneer. Everything else will get ripped to the server. It was a rare day to have all that stuff I wanted.

Stopped in at the fun store to see my friends. Had a nice chat and they did a steady stream of business while I was there. They had a lot of pistols on consignment. I’ve been seeing a lot of ammo in my auctions lately, even .22LR. Times are getting tight again, methinks.

Taking D1 and her friends out for dinner rounded out the evening. Good news from the docs, and a night with family. It was a good day.

Today I’ll be trying to get a couple of pickups done. I’ve got a few other things to do too, but most of the day is open. Tonight, D2 walks across the stage at her middle school. Time FLIES.

Use that power of time to do a little, frequently. Before you know it, you’ll have world class stacks, speak another language, have a solid new skill, or have saved for your BOL. Or all of those if you are ambitious.

Stack the good things.

Glad to hear all checks out well so far, Nick. I hope the final tests put all to bed.

A good friend from college days announced he’s coming to the BOL for lunch on Saturday, so that’s nice.

As predicted, neither hunting buddy nor I crawled out of bed at 4am to bash Bambi, so that will be the project for this evening. Looks like we will have northerly winds and overcast. The wind is not optimal, but the deer move about earlier on dull evenings, so that is to our advantage.

Haircut appointment this afternoon. Looking forward to having less mane.

Lunch will be tartiflette (fried potatoes with bacon and onion, topped with a wheel of cheese and browned in a hot oven) and a green salad. I am already salivating, just thinking about frying the bacon and onions.

Bavarian radio is playing Mussorgsky’s Night on the Bare Mountain, and I am enjoying fresh fruit salad with Greek yoghurt for breakfast. A good start to the day. I wish you all a good day too!

My butcher buddy is going to process my roebuck for me. I asked him to do the backstrap rack of lamb (carré d’agneau) style, with the ribs on and the rib-ends French cleaned. I’ve not tried it with venison before, but I think it will make a very festive centrepiece for a fancy lunch.

If I had another buck, I could even do a crown roast … time to bag another!

    The canonical sudo joke…

Sudo has been around a long time. OpenBSD maintains the most popular current iteration so the code receives a lot of scrutiny.

OpenBSD even has a newer default, doas, but the old hands trust sudo.

Rust is already controversial in the Linux community.

78F and overcast today.   I’m up and coffee is dripping into the pot.

@denis, that sounds like a good day, and another on tap…

My “go to” meal for restaurant experience at home, especially with guests, is grilled rack of lamb.    Sauteed brusselsprouts with bacon, onion, and black truffle oil, some nice bread, and a decent red wine… not much more is needed.  One of the books I picked up yesterday was “100 ways to serve venison”.   I’ve got a couple of high end wild game cookbooks too.  If the internet doesn’t provide a recipe for venison standing ribs, I can look at my collection.

D1 got a mac laptop for her birthday.  Now I need to set up time machine, etc.   I’ve got one or two in the stacks, but I didn’t have it on my list.   Oh how the list grows.   And my knowledge of ‘the apple way’ is very, very limited.   W will be supporting the child on her device if she needs support.

Watch: Trump Stuns South Africa’s Ramaphosa, Plays ‘Kill The Boer’ Clip In The Oval Office, Destroys NBC Reporter

    by Tyler Durden

    Thursday, May 22, 2025 – 03:05 AM

Update (1300ET): Well, for those who were anticipating a Vance-Zelensky shitshow redux at today’s meeting between US President Trump and South African President Ramaphosa… they were not disappointed.

As the topic of white genocide cam up, Ramaphosa was quick to dispel the ‘conspiracy’; but Trump very quickly told his aides to ‘roll the tape’ at which videos of black leaders in South Africa calling for the murder of whites (Boers) along with video of burial sites for whites killed in South Africa.

Ramaphosa (who handled the confrontation far better than Zelensky) diplomatically suggested to Trump that they take this discussion private, away from the media (by which point Trump had made his point and the world was now aware of Julius Malema’s death chants and all talk of conspiracy was immediately dismissed).

Nick, if any of the venison cookbooks are on your for sale list, please let me know. I have good ones already, but it is a bit of a hobby thing with me.

Your fancy lamb dinner sounds delicious. I love Brussels sprouts with bacon and toasted spears of almond. I might try grating some truffle on those now. (I dislike truffle oil, which is synthetic flavouring). How long and hot do you roast your rack(s) of lamb? Do you intertwine two, or do them individually? Do you give them a breadcrumb and herb crust? Questions, questions….

Good call on letting W be tech support for the Apple. When W1 wanted to get into Apple stuff, I bought her one and warned her she would be on her own with it. I vowed not to have any more to do with Apple back in the days of the ][e. Alas, my work phone is an Apple, but I use it as sparingly as I can.

  9. nick flandrey says:

@denis, I trim a bit more of the fat off the middle part of the ribs, but leave all the “bacon” or part with meat running thru it.   I do it just to reduce the chance of fire or smokey flare up.    Then I coat all of the meat and bone with a marinade of mint jelly, garlic, salt, pepper, and enough sweet rice vinegar to make a liquid in the food processor.    Cover the bare bone ends loosely with foil, and grill with the lid closed, about 20 minutes turning the rack over several times to avoid burning.   We like our lamb rare to med. rare, so if I have a question, I’ll slice a rack in half to check.

Slice the “lollipops” apart and fan on the plate to serve…

The marinade/mopping sauce will crust and glaze a bit due to all the sugar, I generally put it on, let the meat sit for some length of time, and then when I put it on the grill, I pour whatever is still in the dish over the racks, and leave it alone while cooking.   It’s not really a marinade, not really a mopping sauce.

The mint jelly is a cheat, as it is there for sugar and mint, (and it’s mostly apple jelly with mint flavor added).   If I have fresh mint, I’ll put that in the food processor too.      Adjust portions of ingredients to match your taste.  salt and pepper should be rough, ie rock salt and cracked pepper.

I had some truffle oil infused with real truffle that I got as a gift, and haven’t found any to replace it.   I will substitute truffle salt, or do without, but the little bit of truffle really makes the dish.

It’s like adding a dash of vietnamese fish sauce to something, it just fills out the flavor…

FWIW, I think everyone should have at least one “good” meal they can make reliably as a “fancy” dinner with friends or family.  I’ve got a couple but the lamb rib rack is the best.

    AirBnB is creepy.

I think my wife’s nephew rents mostly to military through the app, but it raises the question about whether the off base housing allowance is too generous.

With a 30 year zero down mortgage for which I wouldn’t qualify on my own, the only market for his house here in Texas if he left the Army would be someone else on a similar allowance to pay either a straight lease or short term AirBnB.

“SpaceX plans to reuse a previously launched Super Heavy booster rocket for the first time. So while Starship’s last test involved an aircraft hazard area of about 885 nautical miles, the one for the upcoming test will cover approximately 1,600 nautical miles. The new hazard area extends eastward from the Starbase launch site in Texas through the Straits of Florida, including the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands, where flaming debris rained down during Starship’s January test.”

Maritime warnings suggest the next launch could happen as early as May 27. But whenever it happens, the launch window will be during non-peak transit periods to minimize disruption to U.S. and international airspace users. The specified launch window comes after officials in the United Kingdom asked U.S. agencies to consider altering the launch’s timing to minimize safety risks and economic impact for British territories, or even consider changing the launch site or trajectory of the rocket.”

A big space ship needs a big hazard area.

Harvard loses 27% of it’s students in one shot:

The Trump administration on Thursday halted Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students, a major escalation in the administration’s efforts to pressure the college to fall in line with the president’s agenda. …

“I am writing to inform you that effective immediately, Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification is revoked,” according to a letter sent to the university by Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary. A copy of the letter was obtained by The New York Times.

Harvard will likely sue over this decision, and a district court might issue a temporary injunction to prevent DHS from taking actions against students who stay at Harvard. However, that’s not going to fix the problem, because (a) DHS actually has plenary authority to evaluate SEVP certifications, and (b) the murders of two Israeli embassy employees have raised the stakes significantly for Trump and his team to put an end to the “globalized intifada” here in the US. If Harvard won’t cooperate by making their campuses safe for its Jewish students and faculty, then Harvard is about to get itself systematically defenestrated by every single federal agency by which Harvard sucks the public teat.

More than half the people writing about Harvard having to draw down it’s endowment have no apparent realization of what that would mean. Turning assets that are not liquid into cash would involve deep discounts, and the minute they do so a large portion of the alumni that donate will quit doing so when their contributions go from building the endowment to expenses.

Will other alumni step up and support Harvard as their finances go up in flames? Depends. Do you think that someone in the Trump administration has already done the research and built a case to remove tax deductibility from contributions to an organization breaking so many laws?

The integration between the devices is excellent. Make certain they are all signed to the same Apple account and the iCloud is turned on for each device.

Apple is different. CTL-* is now CMD-* using C, X, or V.

Closing an app by clicking on the red dot in the upper right does not terminate the app. All the red doe accomplishes is to minimize the app. To terminate the app you have to use “QUIT” on the app menu or right-click on the app in the task bar on the screen.

When in a folder and images are being displayed, you cannot copy the images. You must set the view to a list, not an icon. The icon is just a representation of the file and is not the actual file.

The menu bar changes to display whatever app has focus. Window app have dedicate menu a the top of the app window.

There is no true delete key. The delete key on the Mac is really a backspace and delete and deletes before the cursor. In windows the delete key deleted after the cursor and the backspace moved backwards and deleted.

Apps in the app bar can opened with one click, not two as is done in Windows.

Be careful moving items from one folder to another. Sometimes the item is moved, sometimes copied. I can never remember which.

Lastly, the web is your friend. Unfortunately, some of the image is horribly out of date because Apple changed the control menu arrangement.

The DOJ needs to expedite the prosecution, and Trump needs to stand on the necks of the judiciary to supercharge the schedule. Get him convicted, run through the appeals, and give him 10 liters of nitrogen before 2026.

Of course Paramount and Skydance are going to want that one banned with the announcement on the eve of the final “Mission Impossible” film, produced by … Skydance!

“Super Best Friends” is also another shot at that church headquartered in Clearwater, FL.

    Hail Xenu.

    Dean Phillips ain’t no hero

Constant lying and gaslighting the public about Biden’s health has cost the Democratic Party the public’s trust. Rebuilding it first requires the courage and honesty to admit to what happened.

In 2021, I had a front-row seat on two occasions when he addressed the House Democratic Caucus. I also spent time in close proximity to the president during two flights on Air Force One, in 2021 and 2022, where I was alarmed to see the president’s obvious decline in communication skills, gait, and leadership capacity. After the White House holiday party in December 2022, at which the president’s decline was too graphic to ignore, I was left with no doubt in my mind—Biden was unfit to serve a second term.

My opinion wasn’t an outlier. My congressional colleagues, like me, had eyes; behind closed doors we acknowledged the reality, lamented our party leadership’s inaction, and recognized the impending disaster awaiting us in November 2024.

After many of the same hushed conversations, I tried to impress a sense of urgency. I made calls to potential presidential candidates, like Illinois governor JB Pritzker and Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, to urge them to run. But they didn’t even want their names mentioned—let alone return my calls.

David Strom’s columns for HotAir are always worth reading, and he pairs Phillips with Bernie Sanders to make a point.

I’ll going to stop right here:

Rebuilding it first requires the courage and honesty to admit to what happened.

Almost two years before the next election and Biden is not fit. You horses patoot. What do you think, the world is going to pinky swear not to do anything bad while we have a febrile idiot at the helm of the most powerful country in the world? We are lucky that Russia, China, North Korea and Iran–to name a few–did not take advantage like they could have.

Dean, the Democratic Party is not going to get rebuilt as long as you and the rest of the “leaders” who refused to lead refuse to resign in shame if not actually fall on your swords. Not any more than Morning Joke will ever be able to outrun the “best Biden ever” clip interleaved with “The Best of Mr. Poopy Pants”. You had the evidence, you knew what it meant, and your political calculation was that you could get away with propping him up for two years.

I wouldn’t trust you to make change for a week-old rolling doughnut, much less give you any responsibility for our country. Coaching the Democratic nosepicking team is probably beyond your safe judgement zone–although if you could persuade them all to use 3HP 20v hedgetrimmers to do so, you might get my vote for that position.

–yeah, there are often things like that.   Don’t really want to keep, don’t feel right getting rid of…

I’ve got a cookie tin of things my dad saved, that I don’t have any direct attachment to, just that he saved them.  It tends to hang around until it ends up with someone who has no idea what or why.  Then it gets dumped.    Sometimes someone like me or another reseller finds it and is glad to have it.   Probably not often though.

D2 walked across the stage a couple of times.  She got an award for checking out the most books from the school library.  And a teacher’s choice award for her theater work.    The teacher’s choice awards had some funny statistics.   Of the 24 teachers, most of whom were women, they gave awards to 17 females and 7 males.   The characteristics most often mentioned were “cleans up”, “works collaboratively”, “helps others”,  “has a great attitude/personality/social skills”.

The student body is almost exactly 50-50.   Things that make you go “Hmmm”.   Also, not one of the girls was fat, ugly, poorly dressed, or awkward.
