10:21 – It was 35.8F (2C) when I took Colin out this morning, but with not much wind. I’ve never trusted our electronic rain gauge. We use it during cold months because we’ve had several standard rain gauges, plastic and glass, fracture when water froze in them. Our electronic gauge typically reads low. If the manual gauge is showing, for example, 2 inches, the electronic gauge may show 1.2 or 1.6 inches or whatever.
But I trust the electronic one even less now. When I asked Barbara this morning what the outside temperature was, she looked over at the electronic gauge and told me it read 37F. Then she added that we’ve had quite a bit of rain since the first of the year, 397 inches. I suggested she must mean 3.97 inches, so she showed me the gauge. It read 397.14 inches YTD, which is 33.1 feet, 1,008.7 cm, or about 10.1 meters. So unless our gauge has malfunctioned, we had more rain in the last month than we normally get in seven years.
I talked to Barbara yesterday about dropping Amazon Prime. She said she’d prefer to keep it, if only for the streaming video. It’s only $99/year, so price isn’t a factor. I told her that if I dropped Prime I was thinking about replacing it with Hulu for $12/month. She said she wouldn’t mind having all three streaming services. Once we’ve cut down on our backlog of streaming stuff we want to watch on Netflix or Prime, I’ll probably sign up for Hulu’s one-week free trial, just to see what kind of stuff they have.
Given that Hollywood in general is Trump’s enemy, I’d like to see him take steps to eliminate copyright protection for new video and audio recordings, and to eliminate it retroactively for existing recordings. There’s no Constitutional basis for copyrights on anything but books and essays–“securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;”–but absolutely no mention of video or audio recordings. While he’s doing that, he needs to change “limited Times” to reflect the original intent. Tom Jefferson didn’t want to allow patents and copyrights at all, but he compromised on “limited Times”, intending that to mean perhaps a year at most. A 17-year term for patents and life-of-the-author-plus-50-years for copyrights is simply outrageous.

I dropped Hulu after they stopped carrying the Criterion collection. Didn’t think that what they had left was worth the money.
Agreed on copyright stuff; I hope tRump eventually gets around to it.
Sunny w/blue skies and in the 20s w/no wind. Off to vets group shortly.
What are the elite up to in LA? I found this link on Drudge to SEX PARTIES. $75,000 for an annual membership with the likes of Bill Mahr. I can image who attends these parties. Libturdian Elites who sit in their mansions and incite riots against tRump and want the US Military to join RESIST. Rich libturd males pay a pile of cash while B-list actresses and hookers get in free. It’s the Libturdian Utopia! I wonder how many Syrian refugees attend?
At least repeal the DMCA and restore the “analog hole” to Blu-Ray players.
HDMI is truly evil.
If patents/copyright were abolished could that lead to lawsuits from IP owners?
Given that Hollywood in general is Trump’s enemy, I’d like to see him take steps to eliminate copyright protection for new video and audio recordings, and to eliminate it retroactively for existing recordings.
Given that he is a player in the TV market, don’t count on it. We would also have to withdraw from a large number of treaties, some of which offer other IP protections.
Subbing again today as is the spousal unit. Not enough subs to cover the number of teachers out with illness. Technology class this morning. Actually fairly impressed with what they are covering about the teaching of office applications. What was not impressive was that is online with step by step instructions. Students really don’t have to think. Maybe that is good enough to get it in their memory that it can be done.
Now currently in the math class for the afternoon. Spousal unit covered this morning. Teacher left nothing for the students to do in the teachers absence. Thus it becomes a baby sitting function. Keep them quiet, work on other work, or just sleep.
Now spousal unit is floating around various classes as the director of schools for the county is visiting and wants to talk with each teacher. Wife has the class while the teacher is talking with the director. The director should have postponed the visit as half a dozen teachers are out today along with about 15% of the student population because of illness.
Such is high school today. I suppose it was the same when a sub was involved when I was in school.
So I sit and use my Surface. I have access to the wifi as one of the teachers gave me her credentials. Lot of sites are blocked, like speedtest.net (blocked page says it may contain malware) and that is probably a good thing. WAPs in each room and network quality seems good. All the PC’s network boot W7 Enterprise and the only local storage are USB connected drives as nothing can be stored on the internal hard disc.
Technology teacher uses Google Drive for a lot of stuff. Each student in the technology class also has a google account with their own drive. A couple of networked printers, one color. Teacher can monitor multiple desktops from their work station, basically seeing everything a student is doing. Can also take over a desktop if necessary. Not sure what software they are using.
Tough for a small school on a limited budget to get a lot of technology. Especially from the county commissioners who serve a population that consider a calculator high tech and do not see the need for computers.
“We would also have to withdraw from a large number of treaties, some of which offer other IP protections.”
I see that as a feature, not a bug.
Trump had better put an end to these employees’ carriers immediately.

My daughter and wife use Hulu and Netflix in addition to our DirecTV. They like Hulu because it has episodes of their tv shows that they might have missed on tv. Plus, it has those shows within a day or two of their airing. I only pay for the Hulu service with commercials which is $8/month ???. The service without commercials is $12/month. I am beginning to think that we watch way too much tv.
My Twins got some Hulu “with commercials” gift cards and like it since it carries some shows that Netflix doesn’t. I haven’t watched anything on it. I torrent most shows and binge watch new stuff on Netflix I like.
I’m against Hulu for philosophical reasons. Their low end plan cost $8 but includes commercials. I think this sets a bad precedent. Either charge me and make it commercial free or make it free and pay for it through commercials. Mixing both signals the rest of the industry that they can double-dip and could result in us going back to the old model where we have to sit through a bunch of annoying commercials to enjoy the content.

We use a password system to authorize our users and have gotten our software cracked over the intertubes. The password incorporates all kinds of information such as computer id, serial number, start date, stop date, etc and uses 1024 bit public key / private key encryption. Our software is expensive so we can justify the manpower to administer the passwords. It is way better than the old parallel port dongle system.
I have sued several companies here in the USA for unlicensed usage of our software and won every time. I think that we are over $50K winnings to date. I have passed on several such as the expense of suing a Fortune 500 corporation where my lawyer demanded a $30K retainer and expected to blow through that in less than a year. We had them dead to rights for their Trinidad subcorp but the expense was just too risky. My lawyer thought that we might end up spending $250K with the initial trial and appeals.
I actually testified via telephone at the trial of a guy who was selling our software using his server in San Fransisco. The FBI called me up and did a telephone deposition. He and his buddies went to federal jail for several years.
I just ignore foreign unlicensed usage of our software as it is very difficult to sue people in their native countries. Usually people in India, Russia, and China just hire four or five guys with baseball bats to get their due.
Somebody cracked our software and put a virus in it. I have actually had people using the cracked software email me and blame me for their disk drive corruptions. One guy here in Texas actually threatened to sue me for his hard drive failure after using the cracked version !
Have you check out Acorn TV. Carries tons of British shows.

I remember reading that recent versions of Visual Studio insert telemetry into the output binaries so that the prorams “phone home” to Redmond every time they are run. Does Microsoft offer or plan to eventually offer some kind of “walled garden” distribution environment like Apple’s App Store?
I haven’t kept up with Windows development since leaving Death Star Telephone.
“Especially from the county commissioners who serve a population that consider a calculator high tech and do not see the need for computers.”
Calculator high tech? I got through with a slide rule!
I’ll live with the bad precedent of $12/month for Hulu commercial-free. I hate commercials, and when I binge, I binge. I view it and Hulu as worthwhile services for my entertainment dollar. I also think of it at $12/month (reasonable) with a potential for a $4/month discount if I’m willing to watch commercials. I don’t need the discount.
Mrs. OFD doesn’t watch anything on the tee-vee; she’ll watch vids on the computer here that she gets off FaceCrack, or Colbert’s late night show, and the Townies site for Boston Patriots fans, which is often a riot. I can understand what they’re saying.
I’ll binge-watch Netflix series occasionally and am on Season 6 of “The Walking Dead”. And Toob vids on guns and household repair stuff. Plus the NFL during the season, which is coming to an end this Sunday. We have a bunch of DVDs we never watch, but I’ll probably start watching some of them on the computer. And I’ve got the Roku 3 hooked up with a bunch of channels, that, again, we rarely or never watch. This might be the opposite extreme from Mr. Lynn’s household tee-vee watching; we mainly listen to the radio and read.
Back from vets group, where one guy blew the first half hour yakking about his particular problem at tedious length, and it is not really a problem. Then later it degenerated into several guys getting all hot and bothered over politics, which I would like us to avoid during those meetings. That and religion. Gets people upset and blood pressure rising. Ain’t we got enough chit to talk about already???
Meanwhile I got the mail before going down and the VA gave me my disability rating of 50% for PTSD with tinnitus finding pending, maybe gotta take another hearing exam. That might jack it up to 60 or 70% disabled, and I also have to get another form submitted so my wife is included. Health care for me is good, but to get her on there, there is another organization and filing thing, plus I’d have to be “totally” disabled.
So anyway that’s two regular checks hitting our account every month from now on, which is a yuuuuuuuuuge help to us, due to wife’s checks coming in weeks and weeks late and at random.
The psych moderator and the other vets advised me to file immediately for increases, which are allegedly easier now that the initial hurdle has been hurdled. The peer support specialist (ex-jarhead, infantry, ‘Nam) told me I have PTSD at the “chronic and severe” level and that needs to be on my new filings. Chronic and severe.
I’ll put that up on the No Trespassing signs around the perimeter here, with the trip wire and flares:

There are many key words and phrases, like @OFD’s “chronic and severe” that open many doors in the gooberment bureaucracies (local, state, and national).
It would be nice if someone could compile a list and now my mind is drawing a blank 🙁

Congrats ! Maybe the women will buy another halfway decent car now and let you drive your car sometimes now instead of running off to Moh-ree-all with it all the time.
I have tinnitus fairly badly and so the number one son. Tinnitus is a side effect of taking warfarin which I have taken for several years now. And the number one son was a mortar gunner in the USMC which required him to leave off the hearing protection for his right ear for the inclination instructions for the mortar tube from the sight team. It seems that 4,000+ over pressure events are not good for your ears, who knew ?
@OFD
Congrats. I’m sure that’s a relief.
BTW, my father-in-law is rated as 90% disabled by the VA but with 100% disabled payments of around $3,000/month plus medical care. Go figure, I sure don’t understand that logic.
He uses that $3,000/month to help pay for his nursing home care which runs $5,000/month in Lewisville, Texas. The army docs told him that he would be in a wheelchair by age 40 and they were wrong by 40 years. Now at age 84 he cannot get into a wheelchair without two nurses helping him. And those nurses need to be sturdy. And tough enough to change his diaper. “shudder”
I’ll binge-watch Netflix series occasionally and am on Season 6 of “The Walking Dead”.
As the homeboys say, it is getting ready to get real. Everything up to this point was preparation for Negan. Even the cannibals weren’t this bad.
“At this minute: Johnny Paycheck, Take this Job and Shove It!”
Many, many moons ago, OFD was a police officer in central Maffachufetts and used to go with one or two others occasionally to Uncle Fred’s, which was a rough-and-tumble country-western bar out on Route 12, near the Worcester/Auburn line. Country music was, maybe still is, pretty big in central MA, for some reason. Uncle Fred’s is long gone now, but we had us some times there.
One night Johnny Paycheck (RIP) was at the Worcester Centrum, and after that, he came out to Uncle Fred’s and did a show for us, near the time of “last call.” And usually every night in the summers when we were there, everyone piled out to the gravel parking lot after last call to bust out the booze from our vehicles and continue partying until dawn. The state police would sometimes cruise by, wave at us, and keep going. I brought some coeds out there a few times and had even more fun during the following day back at my crib. Man, those were the days! 1980-86. Before the fucking Clintons and Obolas.
@Mr. Lynn; you might advise your tinnitus (and probably PTSD) afflicted son to start filing the papers now at the VA; it takes the buggers many moons to make decisions. He ought to be getting something more for his service over there. And IIRC, I’ve said before that if he or any of his buddies wanna contact me for any reason, no problemo, senors.
“Everything up to this point was preparation for Negan. Even the cannibals weren’t this bad.”
I am very curious as to what Negan has or does to cause everyone to be on their knees in clips I’ve seen from future episodes. These are all pretty tough and combat-experienced people and to see all of them on their knees to this guy? WTF? Don’t tell me, I’m still on Season 6.
You mean those treaties which are routinely ignored by countries holding at least half of the world’s population? And which are threatened with being ignored if US pharma companies don’t sell their products at cost in countries holding a third or more of the world’s population? I’m not sure these treaties are worth the spit behind them.
(And ten seconds later I see RBT made the same point.)
Mention the feline property protection, too. If aspirant trespassers aren’t deterred by the big, armed, crazy guy, they’ll surely be scared off by Nature’s Perfect Predator.
And congrats on the VA stuff. Breathing easier, I imagine.
(And ten seconds later, I see RBT beat me to that comment, too. Dammit!)
Now if they could only cure the fucking tinnitus, someone would be a rich man.
It would be nice to sleep, or watch tv, or talk, or really any FREAKING thing, without that ringing.

I so tired of hearing about this junk science known as AGW, Anthropogenic Global Warming.

He does not want to have anything to do with the PTSD label, especially at his tender age of 33. He is very concerned about the gun grabbers. And he likes having an FFL license.
And, he is a lot better. That first 3 or 4 years after he got out was kinda rough. He is back to laughing a lot now and crazy talking with me, we jump to new subjects every 30 seconds which infuriates most people hanging around us. We just ignore them.
I keep on hoping that he is going to get married and give me some grandbabies, hopefully in that order. But, he has set his ideal woman at a very high mark that he may never find. And, he is ok with that.
“It would be nice to sleep, or watch tv, or talk, or really any FREAKING thing, without that ringing.”
I hear you.
Mine is very high-pitched at times and occasionally the hearing in that ear will just somehow shut itself off for a couple of seconds. I mentioned once to one of the guys in the vets group that my hearing was fucked up due to years of gunfire and explosions and he just laughed at me and said he’d been in the artillery. Back then there was little to no hearing protection or interest in it. Then there were all the damn rock concerts I’d gone to, from high skool up to the last one in 1984, Springsteen at the Worcester Centrum. You want a loud rock concert back then, go see The Who.
There’s been a concerted push by several science podcasters — several BBC programs, “Science Friday”, and “Nature Podcast”, and probably more I’ve forgotten — to discuss fake news and ways to inoculate consumers from the perils of fake news. They all use AGW as the unquestioned baseline of truth, and yammer about the destructive effects of fake news in distorting public awareness, blah blah blah.
Because nothing says “science” like the demand for unquestioning acceptance of the pronouncements of the elders.
“He does not want to have anything to do with the PTSD label, especially at his tender age of 33. He is very concerned about the gun grabbers. And he likes having an FFL license.”
Okey-dokey. I believe we have less to worry about now from the gun grabbers, and we will see this year if my disability rating causes a problem with me getting the FFL. (I already have the C&R license).

I am very curious as to what Negan has or does to cause everyone to be on their knees in clips I’ve seen from future episodes.
In the comic, it’s probably Negan’s crew armed to the teeth that surround him. I stopped reading (it’s a graphic novel, OK!) when Negan bashed Glen’s brains in/out. I start again after getting that scene out of my head.
Dude ! He does not want to know that Negan is a community organizer.
Heh.
No, didn’t see that one. The arrangement of posters on a page is not fixed.
“Trump warns Israel: Stop announcing new settlements”
http://www.jpost.com/Israel-News/Politics-And-Diplomacy/Trump-warns-Israel-Stop-announcing-new-settlements-480446
“White House official tells ‘Post’ all parties should cease ‘unilateral actions,’ affirms two-state solution.”
I approve of this. But, the two state solution will not work. Neither will the single state. And, pushing the Palestinians off into the ocean will not work either.
An assertion lacking proof.
“he has set his ideal woman at a very high mark that he may never find…”
Oh, I bet she’d show somebody a rattling good time!
“Oh my ! Did you look at the next poster ?”
Oh, why not? If he can still march with a ruck and run a rifle, cool. Keep him on active duty until he runs out of parts. Or they rust up. Or some clever hadji with a crane that has a big-ass magnet attached to it…etc.
Saw a video clip earlier of a wheeled robot developed as a “skunk works” project by the fun characters at Boston Dynamics; kinda scary; that bugger is very tall and can move really, really fast on those wheels. I don’t think a human could outrun it.
“…it’s probably Negan’s crew armed to the teeth that surround him…”
I don’t see how that would do it, not for a bunch of half-crazed CQB-experienced fighters, themselves armed to the teeth. WTF? If I had those guys with me I’d tell Negan to kiss my ass.
“An assertion lacking proof.”
Indeed. But really, who gives a fuck? All the parties over there long ago made their beds and they can lie in them. We need to disengage pronto. And quit sending/selling all parties the weapons systems and hardware and intel. Let them figure it out themselves…or not.
And I don’t believe all that nonsense about them being converted on whatever final Armageddon Day and the Rapture and all that stuff, which seems to motivate way too many Christians and military people. Get out and stay out and let the chips fall where they may.
“Ob but Israel is the only democracy over there and our only bestest friend over there, blah, blah, blah.”
Bullshit.
Nah, keep selling them all the arms they want to buy. Emphasis on buy, not get as aid.

I still have the slide rule and instruction book, I really ought to try it out again.
We’ll be back to slide rules and an abacus once the juice cuts out and all the batteries have petered out. Won’t that be great? Us old farts will become useful again.
And that guy down in Oz watches more tee-vee than we do, lol. We go many days at a time without it, and after the Super Bowl, months at a time. Do I miss Faux Nooz Nitwits or CBS or NBC or PBS?? Yeah, like I miss bone cancer or a haht attack. What a total waste of time and bandwidth.
Better to listen to the scanners and shortwaves and get a clue on what’s happening in our AO here. And if the S ever really does HTF, our AO’s activities and events will be way more important than anything going on in Mordor or Babylon or Sodom-by-the-Sea.
I’ve got a slide rule and book, but was just a bit too young to be trained on one. I’ve also got log books, and other books of tables as well as a pretty comprehensive math library. Building a library is cheap insurance against a collapse, and the stuff is cool on its own.

If the bulk of this turns out to be true, it’s not only a coup d’etat, but a coup de grace on what used to be a federal republic, but those days are long since gone forever, anyway.
Would it still be preferable by a long shot to what we’d have with Field Marshal Rodham, considering the likely targets for repression mentioned here?
If the bulk of this turns out to be true, it’s not only a coup d’etat, but a coup de grace
That’s just it. tRump has been President for two weeks. This feeds in to liberal hysteria that tRump is going to end the world. It’s only been two weeks, the guy is not Dr. Evil.
Anybody who mentions the “Golden Showers” memo has lost me. I did like the one commenter “we’ve called and protested and tweeted…sniff…what else can we do?” How about getting a life. He “tweeted” for hours I’m sure. And nothing changed. Geez.
Sorry, ranting. But it’s only been *two* weeks. Libturds need to calm the fuck down.

I think a two state solution is the only one that will work.
A Shi’ite mooslem guy I used to work with favours the “drive Israel into the ocean” solution. That won’t work – it’ll just get Arab and mooslem cities turned into molten glass.
I think a two state solution is the only one that will work.
Supposedly, Jordan terrorists, the Hezbollah, have 10,000 rockets trained on Israel. Just imagine all of those rockets moved into Gaza Strip and the West Bank to be even closer to Israeli cities. I am sure that the Israelis will allow that to happen.
My mother and father visited one of his grad students who moved back to Israel about 20 years ago. He and his family lived close to the Golan Heights. Mom and Dad stayed with them for several days. Every day at noon, the soldiers in the town shot a huge cannon off in the town square. The sound would overwhelm the whole town. My mother was totally freaked by this and the guy’s wife explained, “We do this to remind the Syrians that we will still fight them on any day”. Sobering.

Beggars can’t be choosers. The US needs to sell stuff overseas to pay for clothing and gadgets from India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, China, etc. Sell to both sides, don’t put your own assets and people at risk, and reap the rewards.
Lynn, those rockets are already there.

@eugen, that’s an awful lot of people unhappy, but what is the goal of marching? The people are upset. That is clear. The leaders don’t care. Also clear. Is there a means to undo what the thieves have done? Who will do it? Will they find marchers to be enough of a reason to act against powerful and long lived thieves?
I am confused by the marching, both here and there. What is the goal? Why risk injury and imprisonment? What can a march do to change anything?
Will the mob march on the national assembly, block the doors, and shoot all the politicians inside? Because that seems like the only way they would actually make any changes. Even then, new thieves will be elected or appointed.
In the US the civil rights marches accomplished almost nothing for the average black person. They extorted the ‘danegeld’, which is just enough to remove any motivation to earn more and move up in the world, the movement leaders got their political power, which is dependent on having large groups of sullen blacks to threaten the leaders with (and hence no reason to improve the lives of their constituents). They are just as segregated as before, and maybe even moreso, by economic choices, education, and policies. Their culture has degraded. Their families destroyed.
This should serve as a warning to any group that marches. In a couple of generations, you will be begging for what your parents fought against.

Almost half of what he says is just normal change of personnel. The other half is speculation. “Trump’s got an inner circle of advisors!!11!!!!!!” Yes, and?

Yes, the crooks will continue to do their games, their wrongdoings. That’s what they know. We just have to show them, somehow, when they cross the limits. We started to like having this game, that goes like: they steal we put them in jail, they steal we put them in jail. Now, they want to change the rules, that second part. Of course, we don’t agree, so we are marching to scare them, especially the puppets they use for their evil deeds. All of them are cowards.
The marches encourages the state functionaries to stand up against their politically nominated bosses. To report abuses of office and illegalities and not to comply. They really need to feel the support of the population in this matter. We see institutions, like the Anticoruption Department, which are heavy attacked by crooks own media. The prosecutors are under huge stress working on important cases, where each of their steps are challenged for legality by highly paid gangs of lawyers.
The crooks are master of manipulation and their public image is very important to them. We just show them in our marches our despise for them. We also let ignorant people to know what dirt lies behind that image. Don’t vote for them again!
In the last 25 years, the crooks lost a lot of power. We’ll make sure this will continue to happen. EDITED: and it’s hard to do that as they become richer!
These marches we are doing are very different from civil rights ones. We hardly protested for the later. (I didn’t include here the revolution against the communist regime.)
Thank you, that makes sense for your situation.
