Still hot. Still humid. Still soaked to the skin working outside, or in the stifling heat of a still air building… Over 100F in the shade, and hotter than Haiti in the sun. More today, more of the same tomorrow.
Did some stuff, although not as much as I should have. Did some office stuff. Moved the meat from the portable freezer to the upright, only one needed re-sealing so I put it in the fridge to eat this week.
Tried to change the air filter on the Ranger, but the case I have on hand didn’t fit. I don’t know when I made the mistake, but I got them cheap. THOUGHT I had that covered though, and I do not.
Ordered a bluray drive for my main PC. Ordered some other stuff too. SO EASY, and not great for the local economy nor any sense of diversity or resilience. On the other hand, no one in town had one. That might be a chicken and egg problem, but at the end of today, I had no real choice.
Today I’ll do some more stuff. Or not. But I’ll do something. I’m sure I’ll spend time stretching first.

Don’t be so sure that you did. I’ve noticed more and more mistakes in the parts databases at AutoZone and the Toyota dealership. Ordering aftermarket parts online has always been a crapshoot; usually they’re fine but there’s always a fair chance that the “fits 2004-2014 Toyota Camry” claim is not correct.
I am a big fan of Toyota generally, but their model numbering system is beyond byzantine. I’m not sure they don’t do it on purpose to drive custom for parts and repairs to the authorised dealer network.

That has been a problem for a while, and only continues to grow. If you want anything electronic besides a new device or a phone cable, you generally have to order it online. We really are almost to the point where computers are toasters an we will just throw them out when broken. When the remaining people who grew up with computers as a hobby/project start to age out that will be the end.
If you actually get the correct part box, I always verify in the store it is correct and new. I always bring the old part with me as I’ve been burned several times.
My last experience was with AutoZone. I needed U joints for the half-shafts on my Corvette. They had the correct part number, but they weren’t even close to correct. Luckily, I was being helped by an older gentleman and he let me go back to the shelf and I was able to look through boxes to find the correct part. I have that part number tucked safely away for posterity just in case.
Oh, and as I was going through various boxes, a non zero number of them had obviously old used parts in them. Fraud.

California is set to allow permit-less grid attached ‘balcony solar’:
https://www.solarpowerworldonline.com/2026/08/california-sends-balcony-solar-bill-to-governor-for-signature/
TBH, I never thought the Party would allow it here.
WTH is ‘balcony solar’? 1200 watts is nothing, not even enough to run a hair dryer, and it has to be grid tied? How does that work in an apartment? Really how does it work anywhere? You can’t backfeed the house with only 1200w, it’s half of a typical outlet capacity.
My plan to do enough to run the garage A/C wouldn’t have any connection to anything, just an outlet to plug the window unit into. Why would anything not connected need to be connected and permitted.
Am I missing something?

Who’s number three?
n
Balcony Solar: I think the idea is that you buy it off the shelf and then simply plug it into a normal outside outlet, with a back feed current of about 1/2 the typical rating of a circuit at most.
1,200w covers all the house parasite loads, taking them off the grid. It is actually nore than a swamp cooler on low uses. Or a window a/c on low.
1200w can’t make economic sense.
n
“Is it finally time to buy crypto again?”
– typical advice is to buy low and sell high. NOT TO BUY WHEN IT’S HIGH. Unless you are looking for suckers to unload on…
n
There had best be some type of circuitry in those units to detect power and a 60HZ sine wave before feeding any current into the grid. Imagine a couple hundred of hose devices, active, when a lineman thinks they have deactivated a segment. Then find out the devices are feeding 110V into a transformer that jumps the voltage to 13K at several amperes. There is a reason for an interlock on grid connected homes with solar or generator.
Yeah, there are vids popping up on YT about solar you plug in. Every bit counts inCaCafornia, but you don’t get any benefit. It’s to help the “State”, you see, like a good commie should. Spread the wealth.
Viable solar for me in Vegas requires panels on the roof. I’d have to fight the HOA on it since they have become draconian on “appearance and consistency” in da ‘hood. It wouldn’t surprise me if they have an approved list of installers and “you have to tie to the grid” policy. When the dam cavitates and power drops, they’ll be whistling a different tune, unless they already baled.
Yeah, that’s why I was surprised, California is effectively a fascist state, with all major utilities under state control now, weird to see them surrender that stranglehold. I seem to recall that at one point the Soviet Union had to allow people to have their own personal gardens, to avoid famine. It may be that the grid in California is so close to collapse that they have no other choice than to actually let individuals generate their own power.
(They are currently extending their control to every business – which is one of the reasons why you see them fleeing the state.)
I thought Curry was #3 if you include Billy Gibbons.
Or did Dolly Parton start a new cycle?
Maybe Bill Clinton.

I’m old enough to remember the ‘Great Toilet Paper Crisis’ of 1973, sparked by a joke by Johnny Carson on the “Tonight Show” in 1973. Is another one going to happen because of the trade war between Canada and the US, started by Trump this week? Will the issue wipe out the TP supply in the US? (Yeah, I did that on purpose…) I was working at a grocery store chain at that time, and remember the empty shelves.
This is from an article from The Guardian today (link):

A quick look says that in Nevada state law says the HOA has some say, mainly aesthetics-wise, but can’t raise costs by 10% or decrease panel efficiency by more than 10%.
Before Dolly, Peggy Webber died. Unknown to many, she was beloved by fans like me of old time radio.
From Wikipedia:
She also did television and films, and wrote, produced, and directed stage plays and programs.
I remember her mostly from the radio version of Dragnet, where she played old ladies, including Joe Friday’s aged mother. She was 5 years younger than Jack Webb.
Of course. Because people reset the counter after each three. And if a third doesn’t obviously come along, people scroll the window back or look more deeply into obscure celebrities or events to find a third.
Sounds like we got more than 3 anyway.
But yes, confirmation bias.
Just saw a meme that 9/25 should be named “Dolly Parton” day.
Curious and possibly spooky that her date of passing was 9/25, and that’s the title of one of her famous movies…. (for which she got an several award nominations – Golden Globe was one, I think)….
(Cue “Twilight Zone” theme song…..)
9/25 is a month away. Just sayin’
Urk. Um…..nevermind…..
It is still August where I live. Dolly Parton passed away on 08/25/2026. Nothing curious about that. I can’t speak for other planets nor the Twilight Zone.

We got nothing on the typical wife or girlfriend. “I’ll be ready to go in five minutes.”
Some years ago I got fed up with being late to appointments etc because of my wife never managing to get out the door on time. So, after having warned her repeatedly, I left at the proper time to get to the appointment on time. She arrived fifteen minutes later, furious that I’d gone without her. Funny how respect goes in only one direction.
Have you seen the price of plutonium lately?
Simple solution; tell her that the appointment is 30 minutes earlier than it actually is.
Wednesday bedtime.
Visited Salem Abbey this afternoon. Worth the entrance fee.
Packed up the holiday apartment this evening, and had my going-away gelato across the street (Bacio, Snickers and Maracuja in a cone). Delicious.
Autocorrect wanted to change “bacio” to “bacon”. They didn’t have the latter, but I would have been tempted to try it…
Decided to load the car tomorrow morning. I dislike trying to Tetris stuff into a vehicle in the dark. Too easy to drop something important and not notice. Will have to arise early…
Did I mention that I bought a few Swiss Army knives in Stein am Rhein yesterday? There was a touristy sort of shop with a very good selection of new old stock, and the gentleman apparently hadn’t been raising his prices to keep pace with inflation or the strong Swiss Franc, so the knives were cheaper than I could get them elsewhere, even accounting for the exchange rate.
Sad to hear of Dolly Parton and Tim Curry. Maybe the grim reaper could complete the hattrick with a less sympathetic celebrity.
He has certainly been busy in Nepal. The pictures of the flash floods / mudslides are shocking.

Every company in the USA and Europe outsourced everything to China. I was in Germany back in 1993 or so and there was 5,000 Chinese men taking a 1930s steel mill apart and putting into shipping boxes, next to the refinery that I was working at. They finished in about 18 months, just about the time the government noticed that 5,000 Chinese men were in the country. All of the Germans that I was talking with were like, so what? It was a freaking complete steel mill that they bought for a penny on the Deutschemark.
“Judge rejects Minnesota request to keep ICE officer jailed in extradition fight with Texas”
https://www.texastribune.org/2026/08/25/texas-minnesota-ice-officer-extradition-judge/
“BROWNSVILLE — A federal judge Wednesday rejected Minnesota’s attempt to keep an immigration officer jailed in South Texas as the state fights to extradite the man to face criminal charges related to a January shooting.”
“In a lawsuit filed last week, Minnesota officials sought to compel Gov. Greg Abbott to agree to extradite Christian Castro. The Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officer faces four counts of assault after he allegedly fired through a closed door in Minneapolis on Jan. 14 and struck a Venezuelan man in the leg. He is also accused of lying about events leading to the shooting.”
“The lawsuit also asked U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr., appointed by President Donald Trump, to order Castro held in the Cameron County Jail beyond Thursday while they await Abbott’s decision on the extradition request. ”
“People awaiting extradition in Texas cannot be held longer than 90 days. Castro, who was arrested in Cameron County on May 29, will reach that deadline Thursday. Minnesota officials expressed concern that if released, the officer would flee and avoid prosecution.”
Since the Minnesota court will be a kangaroo court, I like Abbott delaying the extradition until the sun grows cold. Since the ICE officers do not have cameras, Minnesota is taking the words of the illegals as truth. That is not right for a federal officer.
Was the Venezuelan here legally? If not, who cares what happened to him?
I’m cool with 9/25 being Dolly Parton Day. After all, if 5/4 can be Star Wars Day.
Ok, ICE is a Federal job. The guy did his job and went home to Texas. But Minnesota thinks it can extradite him from Texas?
I read the linked article. Why is the guy in jail? For doing his Federal job?
If Minnesota can do that, how about extraditing the folks that shot the Weavers or caused the fire in Waco?
Of note, there is no statute of limitations on murder in any state in the US nor at the federal level.
Johnny Reno ordered the gas used in Waco which resulted in the inferno.

“US Army orders 6 more Boeing Chinook helicopters”
https://www.boeing.com/features/2026/04/us-army-orders-6-more-boeing-chinook-helicopters
“The U.S. Army awarded Boeing a contract for six more CH-47F Block II Chinook helicopters.”
Why it matters: The $324 million contract builds on the Army’s acquisition strategy to get critical “equipment into the hands of the warfighter sooner and increases the number of CH-47F Block II aircraft under contract to 24.”
$54 million EACH for the six extras??? Or is that $324 million for the entire order of 64?
$54 million each sounds about right.
We have to pass the $1.5 Trillion “patriotic” funding bill to find out what is in it.

Regarding the TP article, I think it needs some wiping itself. 141 rolls per person is almost three rolls a week. PER PERSON. HALF A ROLL A DAY. I’ve had some GI issues the last couple of years but that’s crazy unless they’re playing games with the number of people and the size of the rolls.
Also, the US is “lumber-rich” but activists prevent us from harvesting while Canada clearcuts entire
states. er ‘provinces’ which is apparently metric for ‘states’. So destroying forest and habitat is fine with them as long as it’s not in the US. Note also the P&G has no problem raising prices on charmin as previously detailed here, AND that the entire value of imported TP is $1/person/year. That’s less than Sally Struthers asked for.Since Canadia is no stranger to tariffing US goods, and based on South Park episodes, Blame Canada!

“Texas Is on Path To Pass California in Population”
https://texasinsider.org/articles/texas-is-on-path-to-pass-california-in-population
“This appears to be a prelude to Texas becoming the most populated state in the union. According to projections by the well-respected University of Virginia Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, Texas is projected to overtake California in population in the late 2040s. Between 2025 and 2050 Texas is projected to increase by nearly 13 million residents, while California would lose 1.2 million residents. Even the California State Department of Finance is projecting little or no growth for California.”

A TP shortage because of tariffs? I don’t care. Maybe I’m weird but I do count some stuff. Why I’m tracking TP usage is perhaps odd. Crazy or just boredom?
Scott 1000 sheet rolls. I seem to use about seven rolls a year. Just me now. So going by that, I have like eight years of TP stored. Yeah, I looked and sort of counted a month ago. And then I’ll have to use the fancy double ply stuff I bought for Mom. Another two years.
Oh. And looking around I just need to not buy much more at the grocery store beyond dairy, eggs, dog cookies, and beer. And canned tomatoes. I have a deep pantry.
Maybe I can use everything up by time I’m 85.. Goals!!!
“Bodycam footage shows humiliating moment 49ers owner Jed York is arrested in trailer park after trying to meet up with $140 prostitute”
https://www.dailymail.com/sport/nfl/article-16078309/jed-york-arrest-ohio-prostitution-bodycam.html
“The Daily Mail can reveal the humiliating bodycam footage that shows 49ers owner and CEO Jed York being arrested after showing up at an Ohio trailer park to allegedly pay a prostitute $140 for sex.”
“York, who is worth $500 million and also co-owns Premier League club Leeds United and Scottish giants Rangers, was arrested in East Palestine on suspicion of engaging in prostitution at 9.35am on August 23. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond.”
So $140 is the going rate in Ohio? I keep on getting emails from the Ohio state government about moving my software business to Ohio. I don’t remember cheap hookers being on the list of items that are better in Ohio.
And if one is a half billionaire, can he not afford a higher rent than $140?
And of course, the house of ill repute, the single wide mobile home, is sitting on cinder blocks.
And last but not least, don’t the cops have anything better to do than entice citizens to an activity that should be legal?
I took a major fall today. I was working around my wife’s pond, which is level with the patio, but about two feet higher above the grass on the other side. I lost my balance and stumbled off the grass side, almost horizontal, two feet down. I hit hard. My watch activated with a fall alert. I canceled that but I did tell the watch I fell. I was laying on my side, face in the grass. My wife looked over, as she did not seem fall, and asked if I was OK. I said I was inspecting the grass.
I took my time and checked slowly for any broken bones, joints out of place, limbs missing, cuts, etc. Finding none I got up, slowly, again checking for any flaws in the process. Fortunately nothing was amiss. I am now very sore and my decades old back injury is hurting much more than normal. My right side that hit is sore. Right leg is hurting. There are no bruises visible. Left elbow is scraped.
My ego shattered.
Maybe he wanted the “half teeth“ experience, the meth mama.
Wait. Dude is worth half a billion and he’s paying for it? He must smell real bad.
I was under the impression that with that kind of money you can just grab the hot women by the pussy. Isn’t that what the Dems said about Trump a few years ago?
I’ve never paid for sex. It’s just an icky idea to me. Sure, a few dates and stuff happened a few hours later. But meeting a stranger and doing the deed is just off my radar of normal.
