Fri. Nov. 8, 2024 – another busy day

Warm, damp, and might rain. I hope not. It threatened most of yesterday but never did rain on me, and it cleared up by afternoon. I drove around with the windows open and it was nice. Had the A/C on too, in the later afternoon when the heat caught up with the humidity.

Spent the day doing domestic bliss. Laundry, taking down some of the decor. I can’t take down anything that’s not really dry. Or I could, but it wouldn’t be smart… so I hope it stays dry today.

Checked the traps while I was in the attic. Turns out I had a small rat in the trap after all. One of the new, tunnel traps, the same one that got the first rat on the first day, got another. He was smaller and didn’t move the tunnel, so I didn’t see him on the cam. Guess I should check more often. In any case, I re-baited the live traps, and the other new tunnel trap. I didn’t clean and reset the first one, I’ll save that for another day. I did take it outside, in a bucket.

Then it was kid taxi service, and a quick trip to the theater when they thought they had an issue with sound. They didn’t really but the kid has his hands full and he didn’t have time to troubleshoot. One of the reasons the shows always sound so bad is that they never give any time to the sound guy to work with the actors and the mics. They don’t have enough rehearsal anyway, barely getting the show blocked before opening, so sound gets short shrift.

Like most things in life, if you don’t take the time, practice, test, and refine, you won’t get a good result.

Today I’ve got an auction pickup or two. I need to buy and assemble a drywall dolly to use when I pick up my new bed. It was $130 to rent one, and $199 to buy, so I’m buying. I’ll use it again. Later in the day I’ll pick up the trailer for the bed too. Lots of running around. AND I’ve got to get some stuff together for my non-prepping hobby quarterly swapmeet on Saturday. I’ll do that, then drive toward the BOL, picking up the bed and some other stuff on the way. Busy, busy, that’s me.

Don’t falter, right?

And find some time to improve your situation. Stacking is easiest.

Thur. Nov. 7, 2024 – so it’s all so very obvious now, is it?

Cool but still damp. Clear and sunny warming things up later. Yesterday was pretty nice by the afternoon. It’s great to drive around with the windows open, even if you might need a bit of heat or A/C to put things right. I need another warm dry day to get my decor dried out and put away.

Yesterday I did some auction stuff. Did one pickup on the north side. It’s near the LDS thrift store, Deseret Industries. I always go in and shop when I’m in the area and it usually pays off. This time I got an Aquatainer for $3, two big spools of direct burial cat 6 cable, which I have plans for here and at the BOL for $25 each, and a big old CB radio for resale, either at the Hamfest or online… and I got some irrigation supplies and some medical stuff too. Then I got the kid from school, and did stuff at home including some domestic bliss. I’ll fold the clean clothes later today.

Today I’ll be trying to rent a drywall cart to help with moving my new bed, and doing other stuff on the list. I rented the trailer so that’s done. I shouldn’t have any pickups, and kid taxi duties don’t kick in until 3pm so I MIGHT be able to make some progress around the house. That’s the plan, Stan.

I’m finding the news to be entertaining… lot’s of “this is why the Kamel failed” articles. NOW they see it, NOW they know it, NOW it’s so obvious. Well, where were you last week, or the previous months when it was obvious to US? In South Park getting high on your own smug?

The only question now is, well there are lots of questions. Still plenty of uncertainty, even if one branch of the tree is known. We’re on the “Trump won the election” branch, but it forks and twists, and is riddled with parasites, storm damage, weakened branches, etc… There are still a million bad things that can happen, but now there are also good things too.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and try to get through it.

And stack of course.

Wed. Nov. 6, 2024 – nope, I don’t know yet…

Cooler and still very damp. It was 65F when I went to bed and I expect it will be near that to start today. We did have a very nice clear afternoon yesterday but there were still rain showers in different parts of town. You could clearly see the rain in the distance.

I got my pickups done, got to my storage unit, and my secondary, and got stuff from my driveway, and loaded stuff for my dropoff. I made it there with 15 minutes to spare… and unloaded what I had. Because time was so tight, I didn’t get everything I hoped, so I expect to make a second dropoff trip, maybe Thursday.

Spent some time doing tech support for my client. Windows issues.

Spent some time avoiding getting sucked into the play by play of the election. I did that last time. Still woke disappointed. We’ll see if today is any different. I hope so.

I’ve got a ton of stuff to do today, and probably won’t get a third of it done, but maybe… just maybe, I’ll get a thing or two done.

And stack. Twice as hard.

Tues. Nov. 5, 2024 – a day that will live in infamy…

And it will be a damp, dreary day. Maybe. Depending on where you are. Yesterday the forecast called for rain, and we got it on the west side of town. On the east side it was sunny and warm. Until it rained out of the clear blue sky. That happened to me several times as I drove all over town. And most of the rain was fairly light squalls. Some places got plenty and pretty steady, but the high winds kept the weather moving around for most of Houston. I kinda expect today to be similar.

Started the day with my volunteering at the kid’s school. That ate a couple of hours but real progress has been made and I think they have a good starting point to work from. I’ll end up back there a couple more times I’m sure, but I’m not doing much until after they get through this performance.

Did a couple of pickups, but the rain kept me from doing my dropoff. Maybe today if it’s clear. Then it was kid taxi service and leftovers for dinner.

I’m getting tired of writing about not getting my stuff accomplished, I’m sure you guys are getting tired of hearing about it. I’m rationalizing it as a counter to the other prepper blogs where they are always trying a new recipe, doing a gear review, or reporting on homestead life… yeah, that’s it, I’m a counter balance…

I will be voting today. I encourage everyone to vote, no matter their politics. If you are undecided or don’t care, vote for Trump. He’s the only non-politician to run in decades, with a real chance, and that alone should get your vote. Will he be effective? Will he be able or allowed to do the things he’s promised? Dunno. Most of them don’t deliver on any promises (first 100 days to solve the “healthcare crisis” anyone??) but he delivered Supreme Court justices that have a Constitutional orientation and that has a chance to shape the USofA for decades. It’s a needed swing of the pendulum. The body politic has swung too far to the left, and has to swing back toward the middle, or things WILL come apart.

I think they’ll come apart anyway, but maybe this way it won’t be as ugly.

That said, my prediction is the deep state abandons kamel, because someone realizes the cheat will have to be too big, and they can just wait 4 years… and Trump wins. Then the economy gets crashed. Don’t think that’s possible? What if the Federal Reserve, which is NOT a government agency, raises interest rates 2, 3, or even just 4 points? They blame Trump for the resulting problems, blame the right for the Left’s violence, and run a Jesus candidate in ’28. I can make an arguement either way at all of the inflection points in any scenario I can come up with.

Maybe they don’t CARE if everyone knows the fix was in. They didn’t seem to last time. So the cheat is massive, undeniable, and their stance is “suck it, btiches”. — Civil war, cold or hot, results.

Maybe there are enough big money people to keep any financial shenanigans in line, and the economy gets a Trump boost. The left won’t allow that to go unpunished so expect violence. Civil war- or just constant terrorism and insurgency. Bombings, fires, riots. Infrastructure destruction… BLM and antifa were training actions. They are funded and organized, they have training cadre with experience.

I don’t see any scenario where things are better after the election, no matter who “wins”. Heck maybe Kamel is their fall guy, so they can go back to white men when they’re done blaming her for the economic collapse and sectarian violence that erupts. That would be an outcome I don’t think many people have considered…

There will be violence. There will be disruption. There will likely be death and privation. People on both sides have been gearing up and have been drawing lines in the sand. People on both sides are radicalized. All that energy is crying for a release.

And don’t forget that our enemies will work for their own benefit- while US attention turns inward, all hell could break loose internationally, which WILL affect us as supply chain issues… and foreign entanglements. Lots of money to be made in war, and war is a traditional way to reset your currency and repudiate your debts.

Could be I’m just a doomer and it will all be fine. Good luck with that. I’m working to make sure we get through this coming time and emerge safe and sound, and maybe even better. I’ve been encouraging all of you to take whatever steps you think are prudent, and I hope you have. There are still Romans in Rome. Mongols in China. And Brits in the UK. We’ll still be here when it is all in the past. Some of us anyway.

The ship of State doesn’t turn on a dime, and this great country has “a lot of ruin in it”. Timing the collapse is as hard as timing the markets.

Be ready for tomorrow, and one year from now, and 5 years from now, and the rest of your life…

And stack, because that is one thing you can control…

Fri. Nov. 1, 2024 – now the countdown to the end of the year starts…

Sweaty humid and warm today, and yesterday. Yesterday had thunder in the morning with a little rain, but it had cleared out by 3pm and was a beautiful evening and night. Albeit a sweaty one.

Spent 4 hours in the morning volunteering at D2’s middle school, working on their theater sound system. Made real progress putting things in order, and addressing stuff that had fallen by the wayside. I’m going in for at least a couple of hours today to continue working on notes.

After my volunteer hours, I came home, documented what I did, then put out the “day of” stuff for Halloween. That rolled right into passing out candy, saying hi to my neighbors, and then putting stuff away. Had a tiny little fire and read for an hour to wind down.

Today I’ll do some work at school, then load up a bunch of stuff to take to auction. I will get at least two pickups while I’m doing my dropoff too. Maybe I’ll get a second load dropped off Monday or Tuesday of next week as well. It will be nice to move some bigger pieces.

I’m sure the day will be too full, and I won’t get everything I want to get done. One of the pickups could wait until next week, for example. Still, I’ll give it the old school try…

I’ll put this in the ‘stacking up money and relationships’ columns…

Stack something for you too.

Wed. Oct. 30, 2024 – oooh, so close, gives me shivers

Warmer, wetter. Maybe even rain today or tomorrow. Just in time for Halloween. Joy.
It was definitely warmer all day Tuesday, but still, much more pleasant than 3 weeks ago. And while we need the rain, at this point, waiting for Friday would be fine.

Spent Tuesday driving around, and doing stuff for the household and the kids. Hit Costco for some lunch staples and treats. Spent half again what I used to spend without as much food, and much less meat. Granted that I am buying most of my meat at HEB, it’s still a big increase in price. 88/12 ground beef was $4.50 and I bought 6 pounds. I can’t even get 80/20 at HEB most of the time, at the same price, so that was competitive, if higher than a couple of years ago. Chicken I buy at Costco because I like the packaging. A few cents per pound higher, but I can just put it in the freezer with no further fuss. That is worth the bump. I bought a six pack each of legs, thighs, and breasts. Since I was there, I bought milk. I stopped because it went bad quickly vs the HEB milk. But it was convenient. Sometimes my time is worth more… like when I don’t have any to spare.

Spent the evening at D2’s band concert, then watching vids about the sound board and digital boards in general. I’ve got today to get to my secondary, grab some of the stuff I want to send to auction, and get some of my sound gear to use as demo for my mini-seminar with the kids on Thursday. It’s gonna take a bit more exploration and figuring out how their current setup is running before I can work with them on their own gear. I need volunteer hours at the school, and it is usually fun to work with bright, motivated kids. But I have to catch up on some technology first.

I have to say, I like simple. I like discoverable. I like using the minimum needed to get the job done. The sound board, and the whole sound system at the kid’s school is overkill for their needs. Worse, it’s not easy to “play” with, to discover and self learn. With only a single part time drama teacher, it’s like giving a Dodge charger to the kids when they need a Metro, or even a Hasbro ride on toy. Build the output side that the kids don’t touch to modern standards and set it up so it sounds good. But the input side should be simple and straightforward. The knowledge and conceptualization needed is much higher with the board they have than with an analog mixer. It isn’t even a question of money. The board they have is not expensive as those things go. It might even be an order of magnitude cheaper than if they had provided all the capability separately that this board has. It’s still a poor choice for middle school kids just starting out.

There are a lot of things in prepping and in life that are a lot like the kid’s sound system. It’s capable. It’s a good value. It’s more than is needed. It takes more knowledge and understanding to use. Revolver, striker fired semi-auto, Double action/single action semi-auto with multiple safeties… beltfed… airmobile… Baofang, yaesu, FT-1000, FlexRadio. CB in the truck.

Every area of prepping, every piece of stuff for the gear whore that lives inside us, all the gear reviews and prepping guides, they all sometimes suffer from the same thing. A CB radio or FRS/GMRS can be explained to someone in 5 minutes. So can one of the packaged business radios. Ham, not so much. Commercial public safety and .gov systems? Specialist territory. Even water filters, water purification systems, and water supply systems, as basic as they seem escalate in difficulty and complexity, starting from germ theory and the idea you need to make clean water…

I’m rambling a bit, but I guess what I want to say is advanced capability is nice to have. Ease of use, ease of conceptualization, ease of repair, self discovery, those are critical. This is especially true when a person is stressed or under pressure, or there are no experts or teachers. If a stick works, use a stick. A revolver is point and pull. Many semi-autos are not. Match the tool to the user. Sure, stack the high speed low drag stuff for you or your operator buddies, but be sure you have something the weak, ill, and old can use while they are home watching the kids. If your 3oz backpacking stove takes only one type of gas bottle fitting, and needs arcane and extensive secret knowledge to start, maybe stack a coleman stove instead.

Whatever you decide, do stack it up… just think about someone other than you using it.

Mon. Oct. 28, 2024 – getting close to Halloween

Cool and damp, warming to hot and damp this afternoon. Some chance of rain in a day or two, maybe. It was sweat-dripping uncomfortable Sunday afternoon, while still being not all that hot. It’s a weird feeling to be working in it.

Did some stuff around the house. Moved and put stuff away. Got out some more Halloween decor and some lighting. I think I will just do trad decor this year. I’m not feeling it to do a big homemade display in the next couple of days. It will be nice, and very festive, but not over the top. It’s that sort of a year.

Definitely a year to pull back, pull in, and, although I HATE the phrase, hunker down.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups. I didn’t win the 200Ahr LiFiPO4 battery I was bidding on. I did get some other stuff, mostly for home. I need to get some stuff listed and need to get a couple of pallets together for my auctioneer. I want to get them to him Wednesday or Thursday. I would like to start piling up some cash instead of inventory.

I might also find some time to get something in the garden, even if I just broadcast some seeds. And I need to find some time this week to do some work at my client’s house. I’ve got a backlog of stuff to do for him and that will generate some cash too.

That’s on top of the backlog of home and BOL chores and projects. I need to get busy. The good thing is that I feel better. Movement is good and making progress, even little steps, seems to be breaking me out of my funk. I should do some more percussive therapy…

There are stacks that need topping up too. Stuff that is aging out, and stuff that was spoiled by time, rats, or weather. Check your preps, and fix what needs fixing.

Sun. Oct. 27, 2024 – a day of rest [lessness]

Sorta cool, and damp, followed by warm and damp. Maybe a bit less damp than yesterday. Even sitting outside in 85F temps had sweat running down my back. It was reaaaalllly damp.

I rose late, puttered around with auction stuff, then finally got to work around the house late in the day. And it was sweaty miserable. So I did as little as possible. I’m slowly moving stuff to the shelves I cleared the rotten food from. I’m also taking breaks from more critical work to do a little job here and there. The little ones can at least be done and provide some sense of completion. Even when they’re not complete.

Today I’ll keep plugging away. I don’t think there will be any kid taxiing or serious domestic bliss. That alone will mean I’m more effective at my stuff. Having to drive someone somewhere every two hours really breaks up the workday. I’ll miss it when it’s gone, but it’s an unwelcome development until I get used to it.

We’ve gotten used to some crazy stuff as a culture and as individuals. We’ll see even more that will need to be tolerated and worked around. I guess I can call this practice for that…

And the stacking, fixing, learning, and relationship building is practice too. Train the way you want to perform, right??

Sat. Oct. 26, 2024 – well, we’re counting down the days to Halloween, and to the election, and it’s gettin’ weird out there…

Warm-ish, at 65F and humid. Warming more later, with sopping wet humidity. ‘Cuz that’s what yesterday was like. Mid 80s in the afternoon, and high RH. Not really pleasant to work outside.

So I only did a bit. I did get more decor up, and some lighting. I also moved some stuff around from close in “seen” storage to ” out of sight” storage. Did a bunch of pickups and did some favors too. One auctioneer had some things he bought with locked cabinets. I brought my picks, and opened them up. No money inside though. It turned out to be easier to physically bypass the locking mechanism than to pick the locks, so that’s what I did. He’s happy, as he can get into them now.

Second stop I used my tubular lock picks to open an inexpensive “safe” the guy had sitting around for a while. He wanted to use it, as it’s a finger print based lock. Took longer than it should have, but I was trying to use too much force. Easy does it with those picks. There was a 5 year out of date paycheck, and one dollar in quarters inside. I like opening locks/safes/storage boxes. I especially like to finesse the opening, instead of just bouncing it until it breaks.

Third stop I ran into one of my friends from my non-prepping hobby. I’ve been here 20 years, and I’m running into people I know when I’m out and about. In the old days, that would be a sign I needed to move… but I kinda like it. Even in the 3rd or 4th biggest US city, I run into acquaintances.

Fourth stop, I got the auctioneer to take some consignment stuff for me, so I’ll make some money on that, and get some stuff out of the house. Win win! From then it was kid taxi for the rest of the night.

Today, I’m working my list. Maybe I’ll get some more stuff listed for sale too. If I’m working on decor, maybe I’ll get a chance to chat with our new neighbor. Meatspace baby!!

Stacking will likely occur too.

Fri. Oct. 25, 2024 – of all the gin joints in all the cities…

Mid 60s start, mid 80s high, mid 70s finish… for a couple more days at least. Thought we’d see steadily declining temps, but then a couple days of warmer happened. Who can tell? It’s pretty much beautiful weather, and everyone is out enjoying it.

Did some domestic bliss. Did too much driving around for too little stuff on my pickups. One was returns fraud- what was in the box was low value, but at a glance looked like the description. I can get refunded, but won’t get the 1 1/2 hour back. Then I did a lot of to and fro driving the kids around.

Dinner was a sirloin cap roast, sometimes called a picanha roast. Yummy.

Today is going to be busy doing pickups, at least in the afternoon. I got some more stuff for the BOL, and a couple household items for here. Some of my auctioneers are still getting good prices for stuff, despite the generally lowering prices. I’m trying to really bottom feed for some of the stuff. It means I’m not winning stuff I might have picked up, as I’m not trying too hard for most of it. At this time, most of the stuff is optional, or I feel pretty sure I’ll get another go at it elsewhere.

I’m still adding to the stacks. And I’ll keep doing it as long as I can. 13 days to go.

nick
