Wed. Jan. 13, 2021 – Friday the 13th comes on a Wednesday this month

Cold, but warming up, clear and dry.

Yesterday stayed cool after a very cold start.  It was dry but so cool, stuff didn’t really dry out.   Today it’s coming down no matter what.  Time to get the yard decor in.

Spent most of yesterday afternoon driving around for pickups.  Got a couple of gub accessories, a major piece of our ongoing bathroom project, and gallons of hand sanitizer.  Some other cleaning and plumbing stuff too.

My dog is looking a bit better.   We’ve been jamming food into him whenever he’ll eat.  He was pretty perky when the chicken breast came out for his dinner tonight, but he is spending most of his time sleeping or just lying down.  His two repaired knee joints can’t be feeling great with the cold and damp, mine certainly don’t.  Pain killers seem to be in order, but my wife isn’t seeing outward signs of pain and she’s worried about drug interactions so today I hope she’ll get the reassurance she needs from the vet.

I wish there was someone I could call and get some assurance the country will even make it to the inauguration.  They are moving VERY fast to tie up their ‘win’ and shut down opposition before it can really get going.   They definitely don’t want Trump around as a rallying point or gadfly for the next four years.   They want him tied up, locked up, or buried.  The absolute perfect setup for a false flag attack is coming up and I’m very concerned.  They are already laying the groundwork.

The tech companies are lining up to serve their new masters.  Go Daddy should be treated like a landlord, along with all the other registrars and hosts.  It should be illegal for them to discriminate, if it’s not already.  AR15.com was just the first, they won’t be the last.   Go Daddy is my personal registrar and host, and I need some advice on someone solid to use instead.  I’ve got stuff renewing soon that I would like to move.  It sucks because I’ve been a fan of theirs since they started outside of Tempe AZ all those years ago, and a customer for over a decade.  I have several inactive domains, one work domain with email, one family domain with hosted WP site (that could go away if the domain stayed.)    The business domain and email are the most important things to me.  I would like to hang on to all the domains, but I’m getting tired of paying for privacy.  Most are .com, with a couple variations to protect my name and business name.  I just registered the flandrey domains as backup, and now I need to move them.  FFS.

I see a real lack of contingency planning around a Trump loss on the right.  Doesn’t inspire confidence.  The Republican party reaction doesn’t surprise me at all though.  Trump was never a party Republican.  They never wanted him and can’t wait to get rid of him.  He threatened a lot of rice bowls (hah, see what I did to amuse you, china! FTW!)  Just how many of our congressmen and business  leaders are married or shacked up with chinese women anyway?

If people do push back, and someone will, it’s going to get REALLY ugly real quick.  Too many 3 letters are already corrupted and working against conservatives (remember the IRS and charitable status?).   The rest will jump on the bandwagon if it gets going.  That won’t be fun.

Priorities should be having the basics to cover an extended period of disruptions.  In EVERY account I’ve read of war or prolonged conflict, the people end up eating grass because they’ve eaten everything else.  After food, water, meds, and defense, comms are going to be an issue.  Samizdat is going to be making a comeback, albeit in new forms.  Beyond that, I can’t really say.  Everything technological is subject to eavesdropping, well poisoning, and the equivalent of direction finding.   There are a lot of clever people out there and something will rise to the surface.   If you think I’m nuts, I’ve got literally a page of headlines from this week alone that suggest otherwise, so you’ll have to do more than make assertions.  I was listening to NPR on the radio while driving around and even THEY can see that a civil war is imminent.

I’m continuing with my life as normal, kids’ school, house remodel, ebay sales, because going dark is just as telling as going active.  I’ve always done my prepping alongside my normal life anyway.  And there is no point in shutting down-the internet archives, and the three lette r s have been hoovering up data the whole time.

We’re barely two weeks into 2021 and it’s already insane.  Avoid crowds.  Don’t get on the bus.   Stack it high and deep, and in more than one place.

A code from the code generator on a phone can also be used rather than a text message.

That was new to me, so I looked it up. Hmm. Seems to be a function of the site that has 2FA, so if they don’t allow this it won’t work.

    That was for Facebook.

I have three apps on my phone that will authentic me for some sites. Google is on of them, Microsoft another. I log in to their website, go to my phone with facial recognition, open the app, approve the login on any device. No text message involved. I wish more sites would link in to those authenticators.

    Do you suffer from triskaidekaphobia?

    @ray:

For authentication, I prefer a YubiKey, or soon, a SoloKey. Or in the generic case, FIDO.

Anything else presumes having an account at the authenticator, or so I understand. Thus FaceCrack is out, before considering anything else.

As far as domain registration and hosting are concerned, I use Mythic Beasts. They’re Cambridge, UK, based, but they have a presence in the US (HE Fremont 2, as I understand) and will register .com. I use them myself, admittedly for only 2 .uk domains.

They appear solidly tech-based, and show no sign of wokeness. Their customer support is done by e-mail, 24/7, and is fast and clueful.

That does not work for apps on my iPad or iPhone. Thus the authenticator apps seem to fill that void. Requires biometrics, face or fingerprint, which is more than secure enough for my needs. Of course if someone gets my phone, and gets into my phone, I guess I am toast (I would say screwed but then I would not be “woke”).

I have two domains at DomainMonger.com, one since the early 2000s. I’ve never had a problem.

Avoid California, particularly the Santa Clara Valley. Paying $2 million for a stucco shack does things to people IMHO. They want to fit in.

GoDaddy always struck me as creepy even though they weren’t part of “The Valley’. Maybe it was a bit too much emphasis on TV. I wasn’t aware that they went for wokester antics, but the company had security problems last Fall.

Congressmen? Women too. I remember seeing stories that Feinstein had a Chinese intelligence agent “driver” for years until she got caught a while back.

Bang Bangs work better on males, though. Biology.

When I was doing consulting on the side, I setup an LLC. I did it using legalzoom, and was fairly straightforward. The great benefit is for liability, but you need to be diligent and not pierce the corporate veil. Have a completely separate checking account and only business transactions occur in that account. Good record keeping. Yearly shareholder meeting (even if is just yourself and super brief – and keep a record). I also setup a separate domain and email address just for business.

Along with the LLC, get a business license in the city you are doing work in. They may want you to fill out tax forms for property assets. I did list a laptop, and was taxed on it yearly. More of a pain in dealing with the bureaucracy than expensive. I dissolved the LLC after several years, as I stopped doing consulting work.

  12. SteveF says:

Clayton, I was advised to incorporate a couple companies rather than take personal income on 1099 because of concerns about tax agency harassment. At the time (about 15 years ago and about 8 years ago), according to the tax accountant, people with a lot of 1099 income who took deductions for business expenses were audited much more than any other group. Small Sub-Ss and LLCs were audited much less than average. I don’t know if this is still the case.

  13. Nick Flandrey says:

@claytonw, in my opinion, if there is any risk at all of liability you should go ahead and set up the corp. I didn’t, continuing as a sole proprietor but I also carry a $2M umbrella insurance policy, and my normal business insurance covered “errors and omissions”. They actually canceled that part at some point, which was when I raised my umbrella limit. If I was actively looking for more consulting work, I’d finish the incorporation.

The paperwork burden increases slightly, and there are legal things you have to meet, but there are also places that will sell you a 3 ring binder with all the year’s required paperwork in it.

You will need a dba to set up bank accounts in the business name, and to get insurance. On the plus side, then you can get an account at Grainger Supply which is well worth having for access to parts and supplies- even as just a homeowner. Your business structure and work might trigger the need to collect sales or use taxes too, so look hard at that.

You need to consider your tax implications, and balance that against the fact it’s easier for them to pay you if you are a corp. You don’t trigger the ‘deadbeat dad’ $600 or above reporting requirements as a corp. You might also be able to call yourself female, veteran, or minority owned, which can provide benefits too.

Along with tax implications, you need insurance advice. All the oil companies I did business with had pretty strict insurance requirements for contractors. General liability, and a raft of other coverages, with minimum amounts.

Someone once advised our group that ‘if there is an accident and you are in the room or on the site, you will be named in any lawsuits.’ Depending on your exposure, limiting your liability to the assets of the company might be very smart.

If you’re divorced and are/were subject to paying child support, never underestimate the implications or reach of the “deadbeat dad” forfeitures.

A patient of my wife’s in Florida had everything seized from him one afternoon as part of enforcement on a *40 year old* late child support complaint filed by his ex- in Connecticut which was never vacated properly despite the money owed being paid.

No apology once the records were straight. If the records were ever straightened out. No taxing authority ever admits to making a mistake, especially the IRS.

Never got anything back. His truck went through the Lakeland auction within 24 hours. The surprising thing is that the law enforcement agency was Hillsborough County Sheriff, not the Tampa Police Department’s Keystone Kops.

City cops in Florida are a wildcard. Sheriff’s departments are usually reliable with the possible exception of Dade/Broward/Palm Beach.

One thing you may be able to clarify for me – or, if not you, then another of the commentariat – what’s with the Democrat obsession with impeaching the Prez.? He’ll be gone in a week. Or if he doesn’t leave, time enough to impeach him then.

And though I believe I’ve seen signs of instability since the election, he can’t do much damage before the 20th. Or is there some obscure part of US Law that says a successful impeachment forever disbars him from public office? I don’t know. Maybe someone else does.

    Is it extreme TDS?

Or, in the alternative, has the Prez. quietly accepted his fate, and is following a scorched-earth policy, to make it as difficult for (to use Mr AToZ’s formulation) HARRIS/biden?

At this point, Impeachment is about making sure that Trump won’t run again in 2024. The Republicans are on board because their nominee to go against The First Black Woman President … cough … needs to be a speedbump in the general election, like what Jeb! or Kasich were supposed to be in 2016.

If he is impeached and removed from office, there is a separate vote (majority only required) to bar him from future officeholding. That would extend to any Federal office. If only removed from office, he loses his pension and office allowance (1958 Former Presidents Act). He might lose Secret Service protection – there is a later law that may override the 1958 act that would allow him to keep it.

Assembly meeting last night. Had about 150 people there. News reported it as a dozen. Assembly spent well over an hour on a resolution “condemning the unprecedented” ya da tada ya da.

There were 24 police cars in the parking lot next to the Assembky chambers. There were 12 police officers inside the building, 5 vehicles immediately outside the building, another 6 in the lot closest to the building. There were 14 rent a cops. What on earth were they expecting?

A year ago there would be two rent a cops. That got ramped up to six over the past months with the addition of visible body armor and weaponry.

Four of 10 assembly members were present in person and perhaps 3 of 7 administration.

Most people in audience wore black. Part of the testimony was a reading of the 80 businesses put out of business by the emergency orders of this administration. As the names were read people stood and held up cardboard tombstones with the names of the businesses.

Predictably despite the testimony the “emergency” has been extended to 4/16/21.

    Re: Namecheap’s domain pricing

The initial rate for a new domain is slightly at Namecheap than GoDaddy, although promotions can change pricing.

Renewal prices seem to be similar.

Namecheap appears to have free ‘privacy’, where GoDaddy charges above $13/year for that privacy. Pricing table is here https://www.namecheap.com/domains/ .

Domain transfers of an existing domain cost at NameCheap, but not GoDaddy.

So Namecheap would appear to be slightly cheaper long term if you add the privacy costs and if you are registering a new domain. Renewal costs about the same. But transfer costs are an issue that might offset potential savings when moving from GoDaddy to Namecheap.

And there is somewhat of a minor hassle to change registrars, though,.

  40. ITGuy1998 says:

And there is somewhat of a minor hassle to change registrars, though,.

What hassle? Fill out some forms, verify domain ownership, change DNS, done. Easy peasy.

Why would you say that? If a sword gains a combatant victory, why would he lay it down?

Who or what is going to make Dominion “done?”

Supervisors of elections at the local level are going to be under pressure to replace the machines or make a justification as to why they should be kept. I’m sure a lot of hookers and steaks marketing put those machines into precincts, and that sales tactic never stands up to a lot of scrutiny.

With Vote-o-matic, nothing was fundamentally wrong with the system beyond an inability to tally votes to more than three digits of precision in the percentages. This was known in Florida for years, well past the first time the weakness was exposed in the 1988 US Senate race which was decided by less than 200 votes, but public perception after Bush v. Gore was that the machines needed to be replaced immediately, with systems using touch screen tech that arguably wasn’t ready for prime time.

  43. Greg Norton says:

Not reassuring that a hysterical opportunist like Pelosu is third in line for the Presidency! And WTH, Mitch?

Our former RINO Congresscritter in Vantucky, Jamie Herrera Beutler, voted with the Dems to impeach.

Not totally surprising, but she first won election to the seat in the 2010 Midterms riding a wave of fury over Doh-bama’s antics.

Vantucky — Vancouver, WA, *USA* — isn’t a Portland relief valve anymore. I often state here that if you want to see the future of the country, spend a day driving around the city.

  44. JimB says:

I countered that I just want them to not put the payment amount in the email, but that fell on deaf ears.
    @JimB; am I missing something? What’s the risk/concern here?

I don’t want the amount I pay to a credit card company in an email. I still consider unencrypted email as potentially public information. I am almost as private as some here. 😉

Similar thing: my auto insurance company used to want to know how many miles I drove my cars since they last asked, usually about a year. I had no issue reporting that. Then they changed to requesting the odometer readings. I had a discussion with them that the odometer reading was none of their business, just the annual mileage driven. The agent I talked to didn’t understand the difference. Finally I told him that the company didn’t trust me to tell the truth. In the end, of course, I lost the argument. Either I give them odometer readings or they will use some standard annual amount, such as 10k miles, and I will pay accordingly. There is no privacy. The only other time my odometer reading is recorded is at the biennial emissions inspections. Those are occasionally incorrect. Nobody notices.

Only slightly related, I have two cars that are stored, and the odometer readings haven’t changed in several years. Reporting unchanged mileage cause their system to blow up and give ludicrous results. It doesn’t matter, because the cars only have comprehensive insurance that is not based on any miles driven, but it is amusing.

Note for the hive. I changed those two cars to Hagerty insurance. Not only is it slightly lower cost, Hagerty is a very good company to deal with. Highly recommended by my car nut buddies. If you want to learn more, go to their web site and sign up for their email newsletter. Not only will you learn about their insurance, but their articles are pretty good. Finally, an insurance company that actually LIKES cars and driving. Of all the specialty auto insurance companies, Hagerty has the fewest limitations on use. Give them a look if you have an older car, boat, or (I think) any other vehicle.

Offered us a great rate compared to our current carrier then came the catch. “What carrier are you with now” she asked. “AT&T” I replied, long pause. “And you want to move your existing phones and numbers to our service?” “Yes, as we discussed” …..
It seems that AT&T stopped allowing users to move their equipment or numbers to PatriotMobile about a month ago. Yes, she verified, they have to by law, but every request gets denied and “they have more lawyers than we have employees”. Our only solution is to get new phones that aren’t on the AT&T network and then we can keep our current numbers.
We are slaves of our corporate overlords. We will be getting new phones. Can’t support corporation that behaves that way.

Patriot Mobile was a Sprint MVNO so the phone tech is definitely different than AT&T.

My guess is that the reason for the number portability problem is a lot more complicated than AT&T having more lawyers. Do some research before simply giving up.

Start by checking with the NPAC (Number Portability Administrative Center).

Do you do all your own car maintenance? If not, and if you patronize the dealership, places like Jiffy Lube, chain and some independent repair shops, etc., CarFax is out there paying for that info and then selling it to the insurance companies. My wife got ‘caught’ a few years back by her insurance company under-reporting her annual mileage from a couple of oil changes at Jiffy Lube. We then found a local mechanic with a small shop that won’t sell data to CarFax. Big Brother is everywhere.

Ah, here it is. There is the REAL reason.

On Tuesday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said that the impeachment article would be sent to the Senate quickly, which would then hold a trial – as opposed to holding onto it for up to 100 days in order to give the Biden administration time to get to work without impeachment theater upstaging their agenda.

“The timing was thrust upon us by the actions of the president of the United States. The fact that he is leaving should not divert us from holding accountable behavior which many of us believe is treasonous behavior and criminal behavior,” Hoyer told MSNBC.

    — they WANT the distraction of the trial from whatever the puppet masters do in Bumbling Joe’s name.

I moved all our cells to Mint last year. AT&T rates are just too high to justify now that COVID is cutting into our revenue. I requested unlock for each phone, took about 10 minutes to take effect, then plugged in the Mint SIM. Spectrum in SA had a good deal, but what happens if I drop their ‘net service for some other in the future?

AT&T are being jerks if they won’t release your phones. Maybe tRump can sue them on your behalf. I hear he has free time next week.

Exactly. Our CongressDopes throw around “treason” all the time. It is always a Redumblican that is called a traitor. I wonder what The Turtle’s strategy is? As mentioned above, if tRump is out of office, how can impeachment remove him? Or bar him from office.

Just this afternoon I heard on the radio* an explanation that the big jump in late-night vote tally after the November election, and the similar jump in the Georgia runoff, which Republicans are portraying as proof of fraud, was actually the result of Democrat community organizers getting out the vote at the last minute. And if you can’t believe some guy you hear on the radio, whom can you believe?

Harold – Re AT&T: I’d move somewhere else for a month. There must be other work arounds.

Today I found my found water running out of my water meter box. Found the PCV pipe broken just beyond the pressure regulator so it was my problem. I dislike plumbing and mucking around in cold mud but I hate paying way too much for something I can do even more. Two hours and the repair was made including just one trip (to two hardware stores the first didn’t everything I needed). I let the PVC glue dry and ran a couple of errands. Opened the main valve and no leaks! Filled hole and its done. Has to be a record – one trip for less than $10 worth of parts for an unexpected repair.

Do you do all your own car maintenance?

Yes. I resent taking some of them in for emissions inspection every other year. I have two due this year. The guy who does it is a friend, and I like his shop. I still watch. Only takes about fifteen minutes. State ripoff.

I have bought two cars in the last six years, a 94 and an 06. Just for grins, I paid Carfax $40 for their “maintenance” records. I had some independent records on both. What a joke. Now of course Carfax sends me emails reminding me various maintenance is due based on their estimated annual mileage, which is way high. They are rather pervasive. I just ignore them.

In a few months, I will decide on and look for (probably) a 2016 car, and it will start over. That one might have some factory warranty left, but I won’t care. Since this will be a new enough car, and since we live in a remote area, I am thinking about Carvana. They screen their used cars pretty well, and price is not my primary selection criterion. Getting exactly what I want, condition, and low mileage are more important. We’ll see.

PayPal cuts ties with Christian crowdfunding site ‘GiveSendGo’ after it raised money for the legal defenses of Proud Boys members and pro-Trump rioters arrested after storming the Capitol

GiveSendGo, which bills itself as the ‘#1 free Christian fundraising site’, has permitted fundraisers for pro-Trump rioters and the Proud Boys on its site
PayPal said Tuesday it had cut ties with the website due to a violation of its policies regarding the promotion of ‘hate, violence or … forms of intolerance’
On GiveSendGo there are a number of fundraisers in support of defense funds of ‘patriots’ who attend last Wednesday’s riot, some seeking sums upward of $50k
Other campaigns remain on the site from before the riots, from account holders seeking to raise funds to help pay for their travel to DC, including Proud Boys
There is also an active fundraiser for Proud Boys Chairman Enrique Tarrio who was arrested two days before the riot, which has so far raised $113,000
In a statement, GiveSendGo founder Jacob Wells claims he actually cut ties with PayPal first, not the other way around after they wanted to ‘censor’ fundraisers

–and yet george felon had 100s of thousands raised.

That was in the 3G CDMA days. Now the problem is whether the radios in the phones cover all the bands. Based on their coverage at my house, it looks like they are using the Sprint tower nearby. Sprint had some unusual bands IIRC.

I believe all mobile numbers have to be portable – they are all tied to modern switches (obviously) and not to the few rural carriers who cant do LNP yet.

This finalizes an interim rule from May 13, 2020, and enables FEMA to provide for the continued supply of critical medical resources to the American public.
This final rule establishes the Emergency Management Priorities and Allocations System (EMPAS), which will become part of the Federal Priorities and Allocations System (FPAS) body of regulations that establish standards under Section 101 of the Defense Production Act.

Not sure if it works for you but one option is a CPO used car from a dealer. Some CPO programs are better than others from what I’ve read. My (good) experience has been with Subaru.

  73. JimB says:

Not sure if it works for you but one option is a CPO used car from a dealer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at your link regarding Carvana. This is why, with only two exceptions, I have always bought from a private party, starting in 1962. All purchases have been satisfying. That said, I have seen enough reviews to take most with a grain of salt. I have also cruised the web looking for info on cars I own, and have been appalled at the stupidity of some owner stories. If I had their bad “luck,” I would be angry too, but many of these people don’t give a car a chance. They abuse it, neglect it, and expect it to reward them with perfection. They do everything wrong, and then complain. Not my style. I start with a good car, and keep it up. The result is good, but rarely perfection.

I have one friend who has worked for Carvana, and have both eyes open. As for CPO cars from dealers, these programs vary widely. Most are worthless IMO, while some are great, especially if I were looking for an exotic car which I am not. I grew up around the auto industry near Detroit. Most of my family was connected to the industry in one way or another, and it is in my DNA to hate the dealer experience. I have owned three wonderful cars purchased from one of the manufacturers, but that is ancient history.

I am in a remote area, and private party opportunities are mostly word of mouth, involving older (pre 1980s) cars of special interest. In this case, I am not looking for an older car, but a newer one. The problem is availability. I don’t want to drive hundreds of miles just to see something I wouldn’t buy. I plan to use Carvana (or possibly one other service) to focus on exactly what I want. I am still working on that. I know the make and model, but am working on accessories, and especially interior colors. What I want is probably only 5% of the field, so I need a way to find the one I want when I figure that out.

BTW, another tactic is to use the dealer network. I have friends and relatives who have had good luck getting a dealer to find exactly what they wanted, but the dealers I have checked are not very interested. Not surprising these days.

If he’s convicted by the Senate after the 20th then technically not removed from office from being impeached? Didn’t look like this possibility is covered by this law??

I read that this is likely ok, because otherwise someone could stop any consequences of an impeachment by resigning. Still, I’m sure that legal opinions differ.

That said, it’s pretty clear that this is about publicity and revenge. The RINOs are on board, hoping that the people who supported Trump will fade into irrelevance, as happened with the Tea Party. They want their comfortable party back.

Doesn’t seem likely, this time around…

IMHO Trump still behaved stupidly. He surrounds himself with yes-men, leaving him in his own little bubble of reality. That’s a failure of leadership.
