Wed. Feb. 18, 2026 – capon, kapo, Kapton, kapok, capo

Silly me, tricks are for kids. And today is supposed to be trick free and very nice. Clear and moderate, mid 70sF, maybe into the low 80sF? Nice. Yesterday I had the windows down for most of my driving around and it was refreshing. This mild weather has been a treat.

So I didn’t get much done in the morning besides auction stuff. And my afternoon pickup was not something I could combine with anything else, so it was like last year when I spent the whole afternoon doing pickups. I had hoped to get a second in, but the traffic was going to make a normally reasonable trip into a 2 hours round trip. I will get that one today.

I did hit the Goodwill for a pair of shoes and some media. Turns out I already had ripped 6 of the disks. Oh well, I’ll send them to the BOL, and maybe we’ll watch Young Frankenstein off the DVD instead of the server.

I feel like I’ve been fighting off a cold, or maybe it’s allergies, but I’m sure blowing my nose a lot and sneezing prodigiously… bit of brain fog to accompany the snot too.

Today I’ll do a couple of pickups and some work at the shop. No child to pick up after school, and more flexibility with dinner, so I can work a bit later if needed.

I did vac seal the sirloin I bought on sale an froze it a couple of days ago. It was nice to be stacking meat instead of drawing down the stacks. I still need to go through my canned goods and triage out the damaged and failed cans. I really need better storage conditions. And I should pull all the fruit and tomato cans at the BOL before they mess up my storage there…

It’s always something. Usually several somethings, and I don’t work hard enough to keep up.

Speaking of which, I’m skipping the Houston area hamfest this year. It’s this weekend, which is also the first time I can go to to the BOL in months, and the last time for another month, unless I go mid week. It’s a month early, and I don’t have much new stuff to sell this year, and no time to get ready before Saturday. First time I’ve missed it since I started going, and I feel weird about it. People seem to look for my load o crap in particular, and it’s a great day to see and chat with people. I won’t even be going to check out the show, which would be a lot of fun, because I’m gonna be in the attic pulling wire at the BOL. I’ve got to get that done before the heat really arrives.

There is never enough time for everything, and sometimes the choices suck. It’s also funny that two guys from the community at the BOL are guys I only see at the Hamfest… I won’t see them this year.

Oh well, I need to be working to improve my situation at the BOL right now. And stacking. Always stacking.

A whole culture that rejects dogs, man’s best friend, and constant companion, really has something fundamentally wrong with it.   But we knew that.

A lot of pet owners in this country have turned into crazy pet people in the last decade or so, especially dog fans.

I don’t have a problem with seeing “fur babies” at Lowes or Home Depot, but grocery stores are really pushing the limit.

Last weekend, a family had a big dog with them while wandering the aisles at Costco, in the refrigerated meat area.

We joke that the new apartments being thrown up near Apple and the local Texas Children’s Hospital complex feature just enough living space for a Soy Boy and his “little buddy”, but that’s probably the truth. A combination dog play area/bar sits across from the entrance to the hospital’s ER.

    Austin.

Is the Hamfest early? The event usually overlaps with opening weekend at Sherwood Forest Faire, the other annual medieval-themed bacchanalia/weed fest between Houston and Austin, but “SFF” doesn’t open until the 28th.

Yeah, it’s normally/usually the first or second weekend in March, and I think it’s been as late as the third.

63F and mostly cloudy this morning.   I have one sick kid home today, she’s got a sore throat and is “icky”.   No fever, but we let D1 stay home with fewer symptoms.  Kid has a good handle on her academics and knows what she’ll be missing.

We don’t have to tolerate bad behavior from the humans, to still acknowledge the special place dogs have in our lives.   Few of them are ‘working’ dogs anymore, and most are terrible watch dogs, but that could change in a flash.

My wiener dogs hear a leaf rustling out front and all three are growling at the door. My daughter changed her hair style last week and they were all WTAFing! her when she came in the front door. Also, don’t wear a hat or get attacked.

Sweet!  My income tax refund hit the bank yesterday.  I filed on a Sunday afternoon and got it a week later on Tuesday.  President’s Day and all.

Well, more coffee and I’ll start on the PC.  It will be running Mint in a few hours or it will be a brick.  If  it bricks, I’ll try to fix it with XP or maybe NT 3.51 Workstation.  Win7 would be nicer if I can find the CD.  Video and audio drivers might be problems but that’s not a new problem.

Same here. I filed some time last week. The money arrived at the CU yesterday but is still pending deposit. There is an effective date with the ACH transfer and my CU will only post one day early.

E-filing for me, for the last 20 years, is always about a week or less for funds to arrive.

Duh.  I figured how to change boot order in BIOS.  No internet.  Oh, silly thing connected to house660 and of course it doesn’t know the password.  So, connect to house.  No password.

No audio.  Tinkered around.  Installed pavucontrol.  No audio.  Poked in the monitor’s setting and well, this monitor doesn’t have speakers.  I found some earbuds, I have audio.

    So, it’s installing now.

    Wheee!!!!

TP Link’s statement doesn’t mention installed back doors in chips or product design.   And it DOES make this statement.

To ensure the highest level of security, our core operations and infrastructure are located entirely within the United States, and all U.S. users’ networking data is stored securely on Amazon Web Services servers.

Why do they have ANY user’s networking data AT ALL?   and we know AWS has had some very high profile breeches.

Irvine, CA is  – 90% Asian and has a Mainland diplomatic mission IIRC. That statement about HQ location doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

I have TP Link power line adapters, but I’m not sure I would buy a router with that nameplate.

    Ok.

    =What’s your name?  paul

=What is your computer’s name? emu

=That name exits on this network.

Well, ok, swivel my chair and change the name of emu to emu1 and reboot it.

    =Enter a password: emu

Nice.  No complaining about “too short” or the usual “upper and lower case plus a number and a symbol” junk.

Keep it simple.  For me.  The machine is named emu and the password is emu.  It’s not a big deal because well, it’s a little and easy to steal PC and one can shove the drive into another PC to read everything (and in the case of the feds, change the system time to add some kiddie porn).

Poking around, I don’t see a way to center the icons on the taskbar ala Win11, err, the panel, but by golly it can be moved to the top of the screen where it belongs.

Looking at Computer, I have a WD Blue SA510 M-2 2280 1000GB.  “Unable to mount”.  Then I have File System.  That seems to be everything.  All of 10.8 GB.

Looking at emu1, Win11, just the Windows directory is 25 GB.  That’s not including program files or anywhere else, just the OS.

Crazy.  This going to be fun.

I just found how to center taskbar buttons.  Just poking around.   Next up is to find the mouse settings.  That is one ugly mouse cursor.  And maybe the mouse can screen wrap.

Someone, not me, is acting antsy.  And since he’s not smart enough to pee in the toilet or pee in the shower, I have to take Buddy the Beagle for a walk.

    Re the Church of SteveF, I’m interested in starting a UK congregation as I’m sure your teachings will be greatly appreciated here, in order to facilitate this I have some questions/requests;

    1. Please provide a few more words of wisdom/homilies/parables/rules-of-stevef, is there an official holy book?
    2. What is your position regarding sacrifices, do you require virgins/firstborn/burnt offerings/small furry animals/politicians?
    3. Finally what is the CoSF postion on donations/tithes/bribes, how much may I keep and how much do I need to forward to yourself to ensure my prayers are answered?
  14. paul says:

    Let’s start with #3.
There is no coin counter.  Feel free to skim at least a third of donations into your pocket,

For #2, ain’t you got a lot of Pakis etc on welfare?  Spare the firstborn and fuzzy animals.  Impale and burn the invaders.  Easy.  They will resist.  But hey, the Reconquista in Spain was tough.  I’m quite sure Saxons, etc, in England are very much able.  And add the Scots to help the limpy Limeys.  Sheet….

For #1, we will bide our time until he speaks.

That’s all the wisdom I have today.

Does the CoSF require baptism? Does SteveF even bathe, or just roll in the dust with his chickens? Inquiring Steveologists want to know. Schisms must be prevented.

It is late (it is tomorrow) and I am tired. I spent an unreasonable amount of time tonight dealing with a younger colleague’s failure to observe version control. As we discussed before, today’s yoof is not good at keeping track of files or versions of documents. Grr.

Anyhow. Goodnight. Wish me luck: W1’s mother, godmother, cousin and cousin’s teenage child are coming tomorrow for the weekend. I might be able to plead “work” and withdraw to the inner sanctum, but I doubt I will get away with that dodge for long.

Now I’m wrapped up in a blanket and still cold. The spousal unit is sleeping in the other bedroom. I will be back in bed in about an hour. Hot tomato soup felt really good.

We are in the 21st century. How about torturing dog torturers to make horrible examples?

Both the book and movie adaptation of “The Hunt For Red October” touch on the use of gravimetry for navigation, a technology which was highly classified at the time.
