Hoping for another beautiful day. I’d take a bit less bright sun, and a bit less humidity than yesterday as they were a tiny bit too much. But then again, it’s Spring and it’s supposed to be sunny and moist. Since I’ve got a pickup that can’t wait, I really need it to not rain. National forecast says “clear sky” but we know we can get localized showers in Houston anywhere and any time.
Did some stuff yesterday. Got the scrap that was in the truck dropped off. It’s definitely worth doing, and I’ve got just as much waiting for breakdown. Other than shuttling the kid around and auction stuff, I didn’t get much done. Some domestic bliss. My chonies are folded and put away, as well as the rest of my laundry.
I did some grocery shopping since I needed to pickup a prescription anyway. Soda, juice, snacks, and various things mostly for the kids. Not a cheap day. Only one item was on sale. Kid cost me $500 in doctor visit (eyes- so no insurance) and we haven’t even bought contacts or glasses yet. Dang kids with their wanting to see, and eat.
Today I’ve got some pickups to do. It’ll be a big loop day. I won a nice wood lathe, a dirty, crusty welding machine, some other shop stuff, and several items of classic audio gear. I thought I might need a trailer but I should be able to fit it all on the truck. Gonna be a challenge and some lower back strain… but I’m used to moving heavy things slowly and with minimum effort.
Once the big stuff is loaded, I can make room for the little stuff, like three more propane tanks, and do a couple more pickups. Sometimes, when the opportunity is there, you have to take it.
Propane lasts forever, the 15# BBQ bottles are fairly convenient to move, and I can run lights, cooking, heat, and power generation from them. I’ve got a lot of bottles. I’ve also got the adapters and even some certified refillable 1# bottles for the stuff I standardized on using the small bottles for. And of course the BOL runs on propane, so there is continuity there. Pro tip- put the bottle in a milk crate to keep it from rolling around in the truck or tipping over.
Most of what I bought was for me or the BOL, but there are a few things that were for resale if they’re not running. The lathe for instance, might have a three phase motor. I’ll probably part out the tailstock, banjo, and mounting plate if that is the case, because just those three things sell for over $500 on ebay, and I bought the lathe for $50. Now I’d love another lathe, but I’ve already got a couple, and I don’t need a project. We’ll see. Money is good, but I do like stuff.
Keep working to improve your situation, and stacking what you’ll need.

Friday. Good morning!
I am back from the far north, but at the BOL with a day off work and a loooong list of stuff to do, including some honey-dos, and I am running late, so just checking in to say hello. Have a great day!
Good morning Denis, get busy you slacker! No days off for you!
64F and still dark. Hopefully it’ll be a clear day.

Weather here in the high 80s still a little early for this high. Plenty blooming, keep waking with my head stopped up. Spring!
Yesterday was birthday with the fam, tonight maybe a couple of hours and a couple of beers at the pub with friends. Then maybe a quite weekend as daughter’s fam is going out of town to start the spring break.
Mybe some yard work if my sinuses can take it.
It looks like the DHS will get funded (including TSA). Chuckie Schemer is howling at the Moom “We did it! We held the line against tRump’s Gestapo ICE!” In fact, the Dumbo’s got nothing. No ICE reforms which was their sole reason for holding up funding. ICE is already funded through 2029 by the BBB. I’m sure next year the Dumbo’s will do the same thing to inflict pain on the sheeple.
Sigh. What happened to the sheeple of the Former United States of America? I graduated High School in 1973. My HS education was better then than most Universities today. Since then, the general population has gone the way of Afreeka. Dumb and dumber.
The average TSA line wait time data ia available by airport. It would not be difficult to pul the data and calculate pre-shutdow, shutdown, and post-shutdown data for each airport. Hold the data until close to the fall election, then hit the Dems with estimates of the people-hours wasted and the cost of the time.
Dysgenic effects, MrAtoz. Idiocracy combined with importing tens of millions of foreigners with sub-90 IQs, who go on to have children.
The sheeple lost their nerve after 9/11 and demanded Federalization of the airport security screening checkpoints.
An out exists for private security in the bill establishing the TSA, but the sheeple don’t have the nerve to push for that either.
Plus a lot of soup/rice bowls are tied to Homeland Security, starting with the developing warrior class who are first in line for the jerbs both inside the Federal Government and at the contractors.
The sheeple lack the nerve to push back against that as well.
“I graduated High School in 1973. My HS education was better then than most Universities today. Since then, the general population has gone the way of Afreeka. Dumb and dumber.”
Anyone who took the college-prep track in high school in the 1960’s or 1970’s definitely had a better education of the fundamentals Than what universities deliver now. The deficiencies in history, English, literature, basic science and basic math are staggering.
I am sure my sixth-grade teacher would be shocked. How many older people remember
“of, among, until, between, during, like, except”
and can name the test that they are the exceptions to? And how many younger grads would recognize them even 2-3 decades less removed? Do current grads even know what a preposition is?

The sheeple lost their nerve after 9/11 and demanded Federalization of the airport security screening checkpoints
– actually, that’s not the way I remember it, and I was touring that year. 150-200 days away from home. At The Meadowlands across the river from NYFC and 8 miles from Ground Zero on the day.
The GOVERNMENT proposed it and no one objected. The airports could reduce their costs by not paying for security so they didn’t care. It’s almost as if they had a three ring binder with TSA ready to go… no police powers. No names on uniforms. Remember they changed the uniforms because they looked ‘too much’ like cops?
The re-org into “Homeland” security, a term that made almost everyone cringe at the time, came later in a MASSIVE power grab among the deep state players. It took a TV show to popularize and normalize “Homeland”.
“The sheeple” mostly hated the new security and the phrase “security theater” was born. The deep state just waited it out.
Now that there is an economic cost demonstrated, maybe more airports will take back control of security.

Left the property, to get stuff for the fluffheads and run other errands. Confirmed with a clerk at Tractor Supply that the reason I need to get still more chicken pellets and corn is that free-roaming chickens eat a lot of bugs and other forage. They also need to eat more in Winter to keep their temperature up. I’d suspected both but it was good to get confirmation that I’m not simply bad at math. I’d kept track of how much they ate in the early Autumn, one the chicks were full-grown and laying, then around the beginning of November picked up enough corn and pellets to last all Winter. And was waaaaaaay off. I needed to get more than 50% more than expected. And note that this is on top of all the treeeeaaaaats they get, anything from a few apples I fished out of the compost bin in the kitchen to the bones and meat scraps after I’ve made broth in the crock pot. On the plus side, I’m averaging more than six eggs per day from eight hens. The only reason I have fewer than fifteen dozen eggs in the basement fridge is that I ate six each night for supper for most of a week (in addition to a slice or two of meat left over from whatever I’d cooked most recently).
The best non-club price gasoline price I saw north of Albany but within commuting distance was 2.799. The best club price was 2.699. I’m kind of fuzzy, because I go out so seldom, but I think the best price at the club was 2.399 a few months ago.
Several of today’s errands were foiled because of new laws or regulations. “We can’t give you the paperwork for your wife and daughter; they’ll have to come in themselves and sign for it.” “We can’t sell that to you unless you have a license.” That sort of thing. In each case I understand the justification for the new regulation but in each case I greatly doubt whether they will do any good, while being in no doubt that they get in the way of people who just want to get on with their lives.
Finally, assuming that “G-wagon” refers to small Mercedes SUVs with a G and a few digits on the back, are G-wagons pieces of crap or are the drivers pieces of crap? I ran across several of them in the 25 or so miles I drove today. Near ran into rather than ran across because they were all over the road. Separate incidents.

Those who do not care for hiring preference and other benefits offered to “the developing warrior class” should do more to put an end to the forever wars.
G Wagons are solid vehicles, but the maintenance is no doubt pricey.
Mercedes doesn’t even trust Germans to build the G Wagons. The assembly line is in Austria.
The Mercedes vehicles to avoid are the glorified station wagons assembled in Alabama. The model number escapes me.
The small SUV from Mercedes used to be the ML series. I was involved in the US launch and we kept breaking transmissions. The G Wagon is the ugly square one and is a status symbol more than a vehicle. For the diamond teeth and designer label track suit crowd.
Added – gaggle says the models all start with GL now, maybe trying to steal a little prestige from the G wagon.

I went to lunch at Burger King. When I stopped, I got a notice on the screen that an update was pending. I also got options of when it should update. I chose any day after 1:00 AM. The reason being is that the notice stated the vehicle would not be operable during the update. That would be the update to the engine control computer, and probably most of the other functions. The update is supposed to take 5-6 hours to accomplish.
So sometime tonight my truck will either update properly or self-destruct.
Park the F150 where the tow truck driver can easily access the vehicle In the morning If the worst happens.
Fortunately, unlike the EV trucks, your risk of spontaneous combustion resulting from the update is extremely low.
BTW, I noticed my neighbor’s iD Buzz is once again parked in the garage.
Best wishes and see you on the other side.
When I got home there was another message on the display. The truck will update starting at 1:00 AM tomorrow. Yes, a tow truck can get to it, grab it from the rear, easily. I don’t expect any problems. I knew an update was in the works as there is a recall for some issue with the computer code. Over the air is better than going to a dealer, in most cases.

“And after all of that, what did Republicans negotiate? A deal that funds most of DHS but deliberately carves out Immigration and Customs Enforcement and parts of Customs and Border Protection. No ICE funding. No CBP funding.”
“Senate Majority Leader John Thune is spinning this as a win because Democrats didn’t get their policy reforms. No judicial warrant requirements. No unmasking mandates. He’s technically correct. But let’s be honest about what actually happened here: Schumer got the headline he wanted. ICE and CBP remain defunded through regular appropriations channels while Republicans scramble to backfill through reconciliation — a process that is slower, messier, and far from guaranteed.”
“Now the deal heads to the House, where Republicans are already unenthused — and rightly so. Meanwhile, senators like Eric Schmitt and Roger Marshall are talking about locking in ICE and CBP funding through reconciliation for the next decade. That’s a worthy goal. It’s also a tacit admission that the current legislative fight was lost.”

https://www.zerohedge.com/military/13-us-bases-uninhabitable-pentagon-admits-much-iran-war-overseen-personnel-working
“But then several paragraphs in comes a huge confirmation of what many analysts suspected was the case over the course of the last weeks of expanding war: “Many of the 13 military bases in the region used by American troops are all but uninhabitable, with the ones in Kuwait, which is next door to Iran, suffering perhaps the most damage.” This is based on statements by unnamed US defense officials who admit they’ve had to scramble to find ‘alternative’ housing and office solutions for personnel.”

Weather forecast says 50f tonight and 61 for tomorrow’s high. I crawled under the deck and replaced the skirting I had removed for the insulation guys.
Not a perfect seal. But the crawl space needs to breath. Gaps in skirting or buy louvered vents? I choose gaps. Not exactly pretty with a couple of old rusty looking sheets of corrugated sheet metal. I think the cinder blocks leaning at an angle to hold the metal in place provides an extra touch of redneck trash appeal. Maybe paint the metal and cinder blocks?
One those things like “Raspberry Vinegrette” versus plain vignette.
Even with the gaps, just eyeballing it, a couple of square feet total, it’s better than a couple of 10×2 feet gaps.

Fluidmaster. Turn the water off. Raise the arm and rotate the cap counter clockwise.. There are some detents, press down a little. Clean out the PVC shavings. Sloppy plumber. NOT me. Too late, it looks good but the damage is done.
I went to Hoover’s today. Buy local. I learned how to do something. The guy working that department showed me how. Fluidmaster valves are height adjustable. Because different water tanks are different depths.
Ok, there’s a collar. You unlock that and the actual valve assemble can move on the part that fastens to the bottom of the tank. This is cool! I don’t have to crawl around to replace the entire unit. And deal with any leaks.
Turn the water off. Slip the collar and lift the old valve off and install the new valve on the existing post.
I’ll find out tomorrow.

I did something different today. I bought some pineapple juice. In the little 6 ounce cans.
Use one can, the other five go into the spare fridge.
I don’t know. I read some recipe where you can use apple juice instead of whine. Naw, pineapple juice…
Half a can into a drinking glass. A shot glass, er, 2 ounces, of soy sauce. LaChoy / Chung King. A heaping ounce of Valentina (sp) hot sauce. The version at HEB with the black cap. About a teaspoon of garlic powder.
Out of the freezer, a vac sealed bag of about a pound of boneless chicken thighs. I cut a corner off of the bag and used a funnel to add the marinade. Closed it up with a clothespin. It was about 6 hours sitting in the sink for the chicken to thaw.
Onto the grill for oh, 15 minutes or so. Closer to 20. “Skin side” down at first. Drizzled the excess marinade on the chicken. Turned and moved around the grill a few times.
Um. It’s still resting. I have pulled off a couple of chunks. Tastes OMG great. The dogs agree. They haven’t had any. And won’t. It smells awesome. Penny is pretty chill. Buddy the Beagle is watching the kitchen counter. Something is there and he wants to eat it. And that’s after their supper.
The sugar in the pineapple juice made a sort of BBQ sauce coating. I didn’t expect that.
I’m going to do this again. Maybe I can make pork loin slices edible.

Sat out with a tiny little fire and the kindle. A giant black cat came by for a drink, and the huge orange cat did too. It made my arm hairs stand on end when it stalked into view, and it stalked off, hunting something in the grass. Both cats are bigger than my dog.
It was 74F when I went out, and it’s 72F now. That’s surprisingly chilly when it’s damp and you are sitting still.
Several bursts of gunfire too, and much closer than the usual distant gunfire. The last burst had a weird sound and seemed only a block or two away. I decided to come inside.

Bad enough that I sometimes catch some resentment from the family around my hearing losses. They seem to regard it as a personal failing rather than the disability that it is. It’s not bad enough to be helped by hearing aids, but it is bad enough to have a negative impact on my life. Maybe it’s not resentment exactly but it’s something that doesn’t feel good. It’s certainly not pity, understanding, or compassion. My mom and siblings were the same way with my dad, blaming him for it. My wife and my dad have been beating on me for over ten years about getting hearing aids. And yes, they regard it as a personal failing. Dad’s father was totally deaf by age 83 or 84, he would read lips, kinda. Dad blamed his Dad’s dementia and death at 86 on his hearing loss.
