Sun. Oct. 5, 2025 – 10052025 – the times are getting spicy

Cooler here than in Houston. And still damp. I’ll have to wait for the dew to burn off before mowing, but I’ll find other things to do. Hopefully it won’t be too hot in the afternoon sun.

I spent Saturday afternoon finishing up my front walk project at the house. When I installed the flagstone walk, I used polymeric sand between the stones. It’s sand with glue in it. It stays in place better than plain sand but isn’t a permanent solution. After a few years, it was pretty much gone and the deep empty joints were a tripping hazard. Halloween trick or treating is coming up, and I do not want people tripping on my walk. So I finally got enough mortar mix and took the time. It was only a few hours in total, and looks good. It won’t last forever, but should hold up for a couple more years. 80% solution.

Then I loaded up and headed to the BOL.

Today, the main goal is mowing. But really, I also need to do more organizing and putting away… and with the domestic violence and dissension growing, I need to do an inventory and check supply levels. I will have to move getting a safe and a storage magazine for this place up the list. Which, because of the fractal nature of my tasks means making the room for them, and organizing a trailer, work party, and time to collect them and get them here. Then I’ll have to stock them.

Food, water, medical, and alternative cooking, heating, cooling, and sanitation are mostly in place already. A couple of security things, networks and cameras mainly, need to be installed, as well as some physical security measures. Comms are behind too, but I have the stuff, I just need to move forward on getting it in place and tested. I need a couple of alternative antennas that I can put up without building my tower, and I need to get the radios up here.

I used the sale on kero someone mentioned to get 10 gallons more, which I brought up with me. Lowes online had a great price. I’ll pickup two more 220W solar panels Monday. Now my mojo needs to get some batteries, and I need to find a suitable 36v inverter. Probably time to refill all the propane bottles too.

At home I’ve got generator stuff to do. I’ve been slack about it this year, mainly due to the lack of hurricanes. Time to move that stuff forward too. And I need to sort canned goods and replace losses. Attacks on law enforcement, especially organized ones, while the noose tightens on certain international financiers, will likely increase. Things are getting spicy. I expect some attacks on infrastructure soon.

All this while also living a normal life for my kids.

Stack while you can. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

and with the domestic violence and dissension growing

“Domestic violence”? Presumably that was awkward phrasing and not an indication of trouble at home.

re a safe, would it work better to have several smaller safes that you can move yourself with a dolly? You wouldn’t need to make a production of bringing each in, other people wouldn’t need to know that you have it, and the smaller safes are easier to come by than the larger. Of course, you might have a spare 200 ft^3 safe sitting in your driveway, for all we know.

I got my hearing aids back from the VA. They work. However the earmolds are incorrect. Looks like new hearing aids and new earmolds. And the new earmolds are a problem.

I don’t know what the VA used but the earmolds don’t fit my ears properly. The right ear hurts. I cannot get to the little thingy that is used to remove the hearing aids and I must tug on the wire. The earmolds are slipping out of position. There is also some occasional feedback in the right ear, a chirp every once in a while.

I need to go back to audiology and get these fixed. Which will mean another 10 days without hearing aids.

Chris Dreja Dies: The Yardbirds Founding Rhythm Guitarist Was 79

Dreja co-founded The Yardbirds in 1963, playing rhythm guitar alongside lead axman Tom Topham, singer Keith Relf, drummer Jim McCarthy and bassist Paul Samwell-Smith. The group would go on to feature three of the most celebrated guitarists in rock history in Eric Clapton, who replaced Topham in 1993 [correction: 1963]; Jeff Beck, who took over for Clapton in 1965; and future Led Zeppelin heavyweight Jimmy Page, who joined in 1966, when Samwell-Smith left.

    WHAT!

No you need to use a substitute to sort of get by. Ear buds? Or just enjoy the peace and quiet like I do. 😀

IDK how many ft it is, but it’s about 2x2x6ft on the exterior.  and yeah, it’s sitting in the driveway.   I use fireproof filing cabinets as storage magazines.   I have a 4 drawer horizontal sitting at my buddy’s gub store.  That is too big, I’d recommend multiple 2 drawer verticals as you can just about move them yourself.

By ‘domestic violence’ I meant violence by enemies domestic, rather than foreign.  Although they are certainly sponsored by foreign concerns.

Sunny and low 70s at the BOL.   Looks like a nice day.  Pretty still, and the lake is calm.

Coffee is in the mug, egg sausage and biscuit is headed for ma belly.

I have done that with the Apple AirPods Pro. I used version 2 in the past, I now have version 3. They work, sort of. They don’t match the frequency curve of the real hearing aids. The AirPods also look like you are not listening to someone when you really are listening. The battery does not last as long in the AirPods as in the hearing aids. Since my original hearing aids had custom fitted earmolds, they fit better than the AirPods. In a pinch the AirPods help but are not a long term solution.

Dang it, it looks like my second apple tree died too.   At home my apple trees still have green leaves, but the one here is brown.   that makes both of them.

    I’m guessing not enough water.

Rescue efforts are under way in the remote Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest where a snowstorm has trapped nearly 1,000 people in campsites on the eastern side of the mountain, according to Chinese state media.

Hundreds of local villagers and rescue teams have been deployed to clear out snow blocking access to the area which sits at an altitude of more than 4,900 metres (16,000 feet).

According to local media about 350 people have been rescued and guided to safety to the small township of Qudang town, the Reuters news agency said.

Heavy snowfall began on Friday evening and has intensified on the eastern slopes of Mount Everest in Tibet, which is an area popular with climbers and hikers. (link

Re the previous discussion of ‘tool tips’ …. it would seem that someone needs to carefully look at the tool tip that is shown for the ‘thumbs up/down’ icons for comments.

I don’t think the intent of those votes are to be an automatic response to the person posting the comment. I fail to see why there would be a ‘disagree’/dislike’ vote on a story about stranded Mt Everest mountain climbers, unless it is a ‘knee-jerk’ reaction to the person commenting, rather than to the content of the comment.

But, I can take the ‘abuse’. I’ve raised teenagers. So, go ahead and also downvote this comment.

Reports that the Chicago PD ordered officers not to respond when federal agents were ambushed over the weekend have been corroborated:

Fox News reviewed the computer-aided dispatch message sent to Chicago police officers by their chief of patrol. The message instructed officers not to respond to a Saturday morning ramming on the southwest side of the city in which an armed woman was shot and agents were boxed in and surrounded.

“PLEASE CHIEF OF PATROL NO UNITS WILL RESPOND TO THIS AS RELATED FROM 04-Oc5-2025/12:34:44…CALLER IS 1 OF APPROX 30 ARMED PATROL AGENTS (ICE) WHO ARE BEING SURROUNDED BY A LARGE CROWD OF PEOPLE REQUESTING CPD,” the dispatch message read.

    https://www.foxnews.com/us/chicago-police-sources-blast-departments-response-after-officers-were-told-not-help-fed-agents-cover-a

and recordings of the radio dispatcher confirm:

I’m old enough to remember two occasions when the federal government threatened to withhold federal highway funds in disputes with states that would not make changes that arguably decreased safety on roads. This is a couple orders of magnitude more serious, and part of the response should be to shut off every nickel of federal funds to the city of Chicago.

And Mike Johnson should look at adding to legislation to 1) make it a federal crime to refuse to assist federal officers, and 2) removing shield laws in those cases so that civil lawsuits can be filed against governments and individuals for wrongful injury or death.

    AoS Saturday Night Joke–Part II:

A young man was crossing a road one day when a frog called out to him and said, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess.”

The man bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.

The frog spoke up again and said, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week.” The young man took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket.

The frog then cried out, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I’ll stay with you for one week and do ANYTHING you want.” Again the young man took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.

Next the frog yells, “Okay okay, If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I’ll stay with you FOREVER and do ANYTHING you want.” Again the young man took the frog out, then he chuckled at it and put it back in his pocket.

Finally, the frog asked, “What is the matter? I’ve told you I’m a beautiful princess, that I’ll stay with you forever, and do anything you want. Why won’t you kiss me?”

The young man said, “Look I’m an engineer. I don’t have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog is cool.”

Nah, it is worse than that.  Not only did he put all five daughters through college, he got most of them to get STEM degrees so they are productive members of society.  And, most of them still talk to him and take him to movies, etc.

  29. OldGuy says:

My comment about the thumbs up/down tooltip was related to the actual tooltip message associated with the thumb up/down icons, not the code/process that is used to display and keep track of the ‘votes’.

I was just looking to share my understanding of the purpose of the vote – which IMHO is a ‘vote’ on the comment, not the commenter.

There appears to be a misunderstanding by some here of the purpose of the thumbs up/down. I use it to express my opinion of the comment, no matter who it came from. Which I believe is the intent of it’s use here.
