Thur. Apr. 6, 2023 – the posts are usually irreverent

By on April 6th, 2023 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Cool, 60-ish, and damp.    Weather was crazy yesterday.   The overcast turned to misty drizzle, then the sky opened late morning.   Then it mostly stopped for a couple of hours.   But in the early evening we had a lot of bump and flash, with actual hail for a brief time.  Big hail.   Ping pong ball sized mostly with a few bigger, and some smaller.   Didn’t last long but it got my attention.

Haven’t looked at the truck yet, but I’m sure there are some dings.   Today has light rain in the forecast.

I used the lull in the rain to do my pickups yesterday.   Stuff for the house, and the BOL mostly.   That late start got me home late too.   Did some more sorting, stacking, and moving stuff around.  Cleaned up and did laundry.   The usual domestic bliss.

Broke down and vac sealed the Costco pork ribs.  Three racks to a pack is more than I want to defrost for one meal, so I cut each rack in half, and bagged them two halves in each bag.   That is more like dinner sized…   The rest of the marinaded pork chops got bagged too.

Don’t know if I’ll head to the BOL today or not.   It’s turning into a challenge to get up there to meet the cable/internet guy, and then mostly turn right around and come home.  I have my non-prepping hobby meeting on Saturday morning, and I have good ‘show and tell’ items and don’t want to miss it.  Plus I’ve been volunteered to be a committee chair for our annual meeting, so I should start getting up to speed on that.   There are other family reasons to not be gone Friday as well.    Maybe I can go up during next week.   Change.  Supposedly it does a body good.

Today is the anniversary of one of my wife’s relatives’ unexpected death.   Having married into the family, he knew what I was facing, and was one of the first to make me feel welcome.  I miss him.  I’ve been thinking about old friends lately, and have started picking up the phone.   Don’t wait if you get the feeling you should reach out.   Twice it’s happened that I talked with a friend shortly before his unexpected death.  I feel better for having had the contacts when I did.

I don’t know why the universe works the way it does.   It might just be innate pattern recognition pulling signals from the noise, or inventing signals where there aren’t any.  Or maybe it’s something quantum, or Taoist synchronicity, or God’s voice.   Happens often enough that I’m convinced something real is going on though.

I don’t have a general sense of dread, nor any specific “feeling”, but I do sort of find myself oddly passive, in a sort of ‘learned helplessness’ sense.  Like it’s all kinda pointless to keep working on the problems.   That’s probably just fatigue, and the fact my calendar has far too many absent friends memorialized on the next couple of pages.  There are good anniversaries coming up too, both daughters have birthdays, and I have a wedding anniversary…   and of course I just had my birthday, which may be a contributing factor.  Memento Mori.  Probably worth considering, and then putting aside- like usual.

And like usual, I want you to stack stuff. I’m giving you permission.   Do it.

Not really. It’s nice to hear your daily updates. Plus the forum: the comments are – for me anyway – like sitting in a bar with a group of like-minded friends. Pleasant conversation, sometimes even useful. Very worthwhile, on more than one level…

Thanks Brad, that is the goal.

There is always a bit of navel gazing at some point in the new year, and remember that I’ve often said the post titles were not necessarily related to the content, but whatever struck my fancy when I sat down to write.   It’s actually kinda ‘meta’ as the kids say, because the comments (best part) often have nothing to do with the posts  (so the titles are twice removed from the main discussion).  Today’s title is more a play off of yesterday’s title than anything else, although it’s true enough.

One difference that has developed between my style and Bob’s is that I find it entertaining to sometimes play with words or phrases just for the fun of it.   That is not something that I would have expected, btw.  And I’m at least a couple of orders of magnitude more likely to quote a song lyric, or make a pop culture reference…   not sure I can ever remember Bob doing that.

Most of the time the post is just my idea of a possible conversation starter.  And most of the time, the crew decides the conversation should be about something else!   [insert Ghandi quote about leading…] which is just fine.

    Glad you stick around.

Bob used to post a lot of nuts and bolts bench chemistry like tips and tricks for making standard solutions. And lots of discussion about sourcing chemical materials. You aren’t going to be doing either. That’s ok, you’re writing different stuff, but still a lot of “core RBT”. You’re doin’ fine.

You guys scared me yesterday talking about the adulteration of Looney Tunes. So I got out the canoe and headed to the torrential stream. I found the “Golden Collection” and now have 32G. Someone put together a massive collection of LT, Merry Melodies, and other cartoon classics and movies. 370G and working on it. It’s not like having them in hard copy,, but I’ll probably watch them if they are on my server.

I did the same with ”Song of the South” when that was being wokified. I also found scans etc of the Seuss books to put on the NAS.

You’ve been framed! Life really does mirror art for these people who found their doppelgangers hanging on the wall of a gallery

Great artwork has the power to depict thoughts and feelings that every human can recognise.

But a select few gallery-goers may find the experience altogether too recognisable – if they happen to stumble across their art doppelganger.

Art lovers across the globe have shared photos from the moment they discovered their spitting image in old paintings and statues.

“…We’ll go to the Obamas.’ We’ll go see Michelle. We’ll see Barack.”

Another self important piece of disgusting racist slime scum. What she is doing is racist to the core. I hope the rest of the team gets the invitation, except for her. She has been accused of being a ghetto thug which she denies. I counter with she has just confirmed the claims against her. She is ghetto trash and would only be able to make a living by spreading her legs to make lots of welfare babies if she could not play basketball.

“So I know we’ll have the champions come to the White House, we always do. So, we hope LSU will come but, you know, I’m going to tell Joe [Biden] I think Iowa should come, too, because they played such a good game.”

Of course Jill Biden and the rest of the clowns in the White House did not help the situation with Jill’s stupid remarks. Any time someone associated with the White House says something they stick their foot in their mouth. Especially Sponge Brain and that fool he married.

    I picked up a partial roll of 12/2 romex…

The UK equivalent of that is 2.5 sq.mm. twin-and-earth, although ours is differently colour-coded – we use  red and black, not black and white.

2.5 sq.mm. is used for power circuits, although our practice is to wire a ring, with multiple outlets (often double) rather than individual spurs. The cable loops throgh the back of all the outlets, and both ends are terminated on the same 30 amp fuse/circuit breaker, despite the cable only being rated at 20 amps. Diverse feed ftw!

Our mains plugs have individual fuses, supposedly selected to suit the power consumption of the device, but nowadays that’s mostly disregarded, and all plugs have 13 amp 20mm QB fuses in them.

We do similar with lighting circuits, except with 1.5 sq.mm. cable, fusing centrally at 15 amps.

    From Space City Weather

    Thursday
The focus for rainfall this morning lies to the northwest of Houston, where a boundary just above the surface has remained more or less stationary. This area, including Austin, Waller, Washington, Brazos, Grimes, and Montgomery counties, will remain the focus for on-and-off shower activity this morning. Much of the Houston metro area may well remain rain-free during daytime hours today.
Later this afternoon and overnight, however, we are likely to see showers and thunderstorms developing closer to the coast, in and south of Houston. Overall accumulations today and tonight for the region are likely between 0.5 and 3 inches of rainfall. I think our Stage 1 flood alert covers things nicely. As always, remain weather aware when heavy rainfall threatens, and check conditions before venturing out.

    Friday
Healthy rain chances continue overnight and into Friday, as a wet airmass remains in place, with the destabilizing presence of a cold front just offshore. This activity should start to wind down on Friday night, or Saturday morning at the latest. All told, most of the region will see an additional 1 to 4 inches of rainfall through Friday night. Please take care in thunderstorms, and do not drive into high water. High temperatures on Friday may only reach the low to mid-60s, with continued mostly cloudy skies. Lows on Friday night will drop into the upper 50s.

“The de-dollarization of the world economy”

         https://bayourenaissanceman.blogspot.com/2023/04/the-de-dollarization-of-world-economy.html

“We’ve spoken before about the danger of the US dollar losing its status as the world’s reserve currency.  Now Tucker Carlson provides the best description I’ve yet heard of the growing danger that this will happen, and not in the long term – soon.  What’s even worse is that it’s happening because of deliberate US government policies.”

“I can only urge my readers to take the time to listen to this excerpt in full.  If de-dollarization happens, it will be a body blow to the US economy, and may have dramatic long-term consequences for all of us that are not predictable as yet.”

A possible look at the future of the USA where the dollar has lost its reserve status is documented in “The Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047” by Lionel Shriver.

        https://www.amazon.com/MANDIBLES-FAMILY-2029-47_PB-171-POCHE/dp/000756077X?tag=ttgnet-20/

From my review which is the top review on Amazon: “The book covers four generations of a family in the near future. The family consists of about twenty people of whom I mostly did not like due to their overall craziness and attitudes about life. If there was anyone who came close, it was Florence Mandible who even as a single mother managed to buy a house in East Flatbush, NYC on a low income salary. But even she makes a lot of bad decisions that lead to a tough life. And I mostly liked Enola Mandible who was a successful author living in Europe but evacuated back to the USA due to supposed discrimination in Paris. Plus I liked Jarred Mandible who managed to get his patriarch grandfather to give him the money to buy a small farm in upper state New York.”

“The conditions leading up to the beginning of the financial apocalypse in the USA in 2029 had their roots in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, basically the Great Society federal and state programs. And in the continual wars and police actions started or participating in by the USA from WWI onward. One might exempt WWII from that list as WWII was supposedly actually good for the economics of the country but I have not researched that accepted fact for truthfulness.”

“In 2029, the rest of the world changes from using the USA Dollar as the world reserve currency to the new Bancor, a basket of world currencies. The USA Treasury Bills, of which there are $40 trillion outstanding, immediately double their interest rates in the next sale. The USA President and Congress pass legislation that holding Bancors is illegal for any USA citizen. Under further financial pressure, the USA repudiates the entire $40 trillion debt and starts seizing all the gold across the country from both citizens and businesses. Even gold wedding rings are seized as China has demanded that their tbills be redeemed immediately with non USA Dollars.”

“The patriarch of the Mandible family is a 97 year man with a fortune inherited from his grandparents who owned a steel mill. The patriarch has his fortune invested in gold stocks, stocks of gold bullion in central repositories, tbills, and the stock market. With the crash of the stock market, seizure of gold, and repudiation of all tbills, he is wiped out and he and his Alzheimer afflicted second wife move in with his son and his wife. And then the entire family ends up moving in with Florence in her tiny three bedroom house. But that quickly goes away also as the remaining family members are soon homeless and living in a park.”

“I can now say with certainty that the collapse is in progress, now. The Western central banks have all pooled their resources to stop cash outflows from different banks around the Western world, to plug holes that appear, and keep the banks solvent. But it’s too much; the dam has too many cracks, too many holes, and there aren’t enough fingers available to stop the leaks.”

“Think about it this way; FTX collapsed, with some $30 billion and cryptocurrencies vaporized. That in turn pulled in Signature Bank, Silvergate and Silicon Valley banks, in classic bank runs. It would appear that regulators are set to limit withdrawals from banks, to prevent future bank runs. In other words, your money is safe in the bank… until you want to withdraw it.”
