Sat. Nov. 15, 2025 – just two more days to work

By on November 15th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Mild. Damp. Chilly last night and chilly to start but generally getting all the way to ‘very nice’ by afternoon. Possibly some clouds.

I didn’t get much done yesterday despite my good intentions. Sometimes it be that way.

Today I’ll sleep in a bit, after waking early to be sure youngest is getting ready for her school thing today. She’s got a competition in a nearby city that will last all day. I’ll go back to sleep after that. Probably. Then it’s working on the list. W and D1 will be home to provide motivation.

I may load the truck and make a run to the BOL late in the day. I’d like to get that stuff out of my way here and re-stocked up there. Keeping two places and the backup offsite location even minimally stocked takes effort. To keep them properly stocked, with layers of fall back, is an undertaking.

Two things I’ve been neglecting is inspecting and organizing existing stock of medical supplies, and food here. Because my storage conditions suck, I’ve got a bunch of stuff that should be thrown out or retired to the “use it for practice” or “give it out so no one else wants more of that crap” pile.

I’ve also been neglecting the generators. I ran the one at the BOL, and had W start it several months ago, but it needs to be exercised again. The gennies here all need to be checked and most need further work/refinement. It’s a big list and it gets bigger.

Stacking is easy. Do some of that if you can’t do anything else.

Fri. Nov. 14, 2025 – half way through November already…

Cool and damp, followed by warm and damp, but the radio said no rain for a few more days. Back to watering the lawn I guess. It’s still very nice in the afternoon.

I did some small things, including trying a new way to cook dinner. I tried a pork roast in the crock pot without all the liquid, going for a slow bake. It worked out better than I expected, although I chickened out and added 1/2 cup water so the new potatoes and onion wedges would have something to cook in. I think it’s a good choice when I have to leave the house and won’t be home when a roast would have to go into the oven. It was well past 150F in 3 1/2 hours on the crock pot’s high setting. I would normally put it in the oven at 320F for about an hour for the 3 pounds. It might take an extra 20 minutes after that.

Packet gravy, and heat and eat bread rounded out the meal.

Today I don’t have any pickups so I can work my list. That’s my plan anyway. Nose to the grindstone, feet to the fire, once more into the breech…

And some sort of stacking is always appropriate.

Thur. Nov. 13, 2025 – Friday the 13th comes on a Thursday this month…

By on November 13th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Cool and damp again, getting very nice later, and maybe staying nice after dark. That’s how Wed. went, with some clouds during the day. I could use a bit more like this before Winter starts in earnest.

I did some of my stuff. Did a pickup. Spent a lot of time chatting with the guy who runs that office, and learned a few things. One of his competitors is closing a branch office. The reselling game is tough. I still expect a wave of big boys to come in and buy out (or force out) the mom and pops like with house flipping and investment properties. I watch new players come and go, and a bunch came in lately. I don’t expect them to last as they don’t seem to be attuned to the business. And everyone is having trouble getting good stuff to resell.

Today I’ve got pickups on the east side of town. I’ve been buying a lot less, and bidding on a whole lot less. I’ve still managed to buy a few things that should improve my situation and increase the stacks.

I’m sure that I have more plumbing in my near future too. But that’s for later. I had a moment of panic when I thought that Christmas was only 12 days away… but I realized it was just a bad waking thought and not reality. The end of the year will come rocketing along soon enough without me losing a whole month.

My subconscious must be getting nervous.

I’ll have to try the Scrouge McDuck therapy and spend some time swimming in my gold coins — I mean counting cans of food.

Stuff gets spoiled, stuff ages out. Adding to the stacks is always a good thing.

Wed. Nov. 12, 2025 – CME inbound, weird lights in the sky and radio issues forecast

By on November 12th, 2025 in astronomy, culture, decline and fall, march to war

Cool and then warmer. Maybe not as cool as yesterday, and a bit warmer in the afternoon. Maybe not. Space weather is the big story today.

Yesterday I did my two pickups. Did some stuff around the house. Made dinner (frozen shrimp sauteed and served with Jack Daniels bacon creme sauce over bow tie pasta. Yum.) Read for a while.

Today I’ll be doing more pickups and more of the work I didn’t do yesterday. My ability to work seems to be “bursty” for lack of a better term. I used to be quick and steady.

The sun apparently spit out some cosmic loogies, and they are headed this way. Now, we’re all gonna die, eventually, except maybe SteveF, but probably not today. There might be communication impacts and might be some auroras visible in places that don’t normally get them. Keep an eye and an ear open, and if you rely on GPS or starlink, maybe make sure it’s not life or death that either keeps working. Otherwise, most of us probably won’t even know it’s happening.

You should be fully stacked to stay home a couple of days anyway, right?

Unless the invading spacecraft missiled our sun during its slingshot… in which case we’re all F’d anyway.

Still, stacks will help if there are issues, at least for a while.

Tues. Nov. 11, 2025 – 11-11 ! make a wish

By on November 11th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Veteran’s Day (US) – remember the day by day sacrifices of all who served and their families on this day.

—————————————————————–

Cold. Damp. Windy? Probably. High 40sF most likely to start off, but maybe not getting into the 80sF today. Yesterday stayed chilly all day, but the sun was hot. I even ran the furnace briefly. Houston has a season where we run the heat at night and the A/C in the daytime… and we might be in it.

I did get some small things done, and started others. I did a little bit more in the ‘library’/’listening room’ by spraying down half the records with mold/mildew/viricide/odor killer. There was a faint smell of mold. I’ve found that spraying it all with Mold Armor makes a huge improvement. That’s every record jacket, front and back, and edges.

I then started on the pile on the back patio. I need to sort some out in order to re-stack the canned goods and other stored food. That’ll be a chore, and I don’t have trash can space at the moment for what I’m sure will be a lot of ‘breakage’. I can at least go through the stuff that has just piled up there.

[it is currently 11:11 and I’m writing my 11/11 post, fun! Not too long ago my odometer was 171717.7 More fun!]

Then I spent far to long messing with the free inkjet printer to see if I could get the tubes and print head cleaned out for use. The answer is yes, but something else broke and now the printer won’t even try to print. I’ll try clearing the error code and see if that works, but if not, I’m ordering something new.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups to do and I’ll either keep working my list, or work on the list for the truck. I’ll have some domestic bliss in there too, and maybe make some dinner…

All in a day’s work for prepper dad. Somewhere in there I’ll stack something. (probably something from the auction pickups)

Mon. Nov. 10, 2025 – still lots to do

By on November 10th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Forecast has the whole country in a high pressure zone, with clear weather for the next two days. Plenty of cold for everyone too. I expect that’s just what we’ll get. It was still very nice yesterday afternoon in the sun. Temps dropped pretty rapidly with nightfall.

I slept in and then did smaller things all day. I got several longstanding items off the list. They are little things but were for other members of the household, so I’m sure they are glad that I finally got to them. Did some domestic bliss too, and some cleaning and organizing. I need to clear out a space for the Christmas tree, so I need to keep moving with that.

Part of that was setting up IKEA cube storage to get some of my LP records out of crates on the floor. I got about 5 linear feet sorted. I have about two feet for ebay and local auction sale too. Old funk and R&B is bringing some good prices, and it’s not something I have a great desire to listen to. I am keeping some of the early rap and some of the more famous funk though. I’ve got a lot more to sort and shelve.

I even managed to cut the grass in the back yard, and install more anti-bird spikes along the top of the fence. Birds don’t bother me, but I’m trying to discourage the possums from using the fence as a literal highway. It drives the dog into a frenzy, and since the possum freezes, the dog just keeps going nuts until one of us gets him, or moves the possum along with a broom or stick. It’s also not neighborly to let the dog bark.

Today I’ll keep working the list and moving stuff around. I will try to take another load out of the house, either a scrap/trash run or getting more of the sale items out. Then I really need to start on the back patio, which became a dumping ground for too much stuff without other homes. I’ve been neglecting it too long.

I need to work toward clearing a path to get the safe out of the driveway and up to the BOL.

Of course all the usual stuff is going on too, and I’m sure some urgent stuff will pop up, because it always does.

That’s what happens when you are living your life.

Somewhere in there I need to work on the generators and do some other explicitly prepping stuff too. And always, there is stacking.

Sun. Nov. 9, 2025 – at home, hopefully making progress on the list

Cool, but not cold, and certainly as damp as can be. We had morning fog/heavy mist/early morning low clouds Friday, and in some places on Saturday. We might have some again today. After that, it was gorgeous Fall weather.

I did my non-prepping hobby meeting and quarterly swapmeet yesterday morning. I hadn’t had a lot of sleep, and the meeting went long, with a long Board meeting afterwards, mostly related to the web site and regularizing some stuff that had grown organically and was as krufty as 40 year old software. Volunteer organizations are manned by volunteers with different skills, experience, and levels of commitment.

Often, if something works, even if just barely, there is a LOT of momentum and resistance to changing. In this case, it’s been over a year since I moved our web stuff to a modern host and platform, but I hadn’t touched the related IT of payment systems. I’ve been paying for the hosting because it’s easier than just about anything else, and isn’t that expensive. The guy who handles our credit card machine and processing has been doing much the same, even though he’s not the Treasurer. The paypal account is ‘owned’ by a guy who moved across the country, and we can’t change passwords or anything else related to the account because the email addy or phone number for the 2 factor authentication has been long lost. People have been using their personal email accounts for org business, and those Board positions change every year…

I was a bit surprised how resistant people were to the simple idea of having dedicated emails for board positions, that would move when the positions change hands, and could be used as the official point of contact for new paypal and credit processing accounts. It’s a change in the way they are used to managing, and they didn’t want another email addy to check. In the end, we’ll be doing a limited number of new emails, and the Treasurer will establish new Paypal and CC accounts linked to the new emails instead of individuals.

I think it’s sensible and straightforward, especially as all the online services are moving to 2 factor, and it captures all the email chains for official business. From a business continuity standpoint, it makes more sense too, as we’ve already experienced what happens when someone personally tied to the infrastructure leaves the group. I must have done a poor job of communicating the issues and benefits because it took far longer and more talk to get the changes approved than I expected. Herding cats comes to mind.

Meatspace baby. Interacting with other people definitely has challenges and costs, but the rewards are there too. It’s a bit intimidating that whatever solutions I put in place or cause to happen will probably still be in use a decade from now, just like the current kludge-fest that I want to replace has been.

This place has and had something similar happen when Bob got sick. I don’t think we’d be here today if Bob hadn’t already set up my (and a couple of other peoples’) access, and given us permission to participate on that higher level. It’s been my privilege to do so and to continue to do so.

As this year winds down, take a look at whatever organizations or communities you are involved in, and think about continuity. Maybe make a plan, or let some other people know the things they might need to know. Do the same for your personal life. At a minimum, a list of accounts, passwords, and their relevance to you should be accessible to the right people.

Whatever can’t continue forever, won’t. And that includes us and the things we participate in.

Do some stacking too. Whatever might ease a transition…

Sat. Nov. 8, 2025 – non-prepping hobby day

Cool and damp. Clear and warm later. Heavy dew yesterday morning and I expect the same today. Otherwise, another great Fall day.

I did some auction stuff in the morning, but mostly office stuff. Then I spent too long changing out the diverter handle for the shower in the Master Bath. The old metal one finally failed and the knob broke off in a razor sharp edge. I had 4 different replacement knobs in the stacks. The “universal” one fit after some mods with a saw. Old plumbing is sometimes a real pain to maintain. Especially when the tools you need are at your other house.

Eventually I got out of the house to do two pickups at the same auctioneer, and to see my selling auctioneer after that. He’s not ready for my stuff yet. I did spend some time talking with one of his staff ladies- she was carjacked at gunpoint in her own driveway two months ago. 11pm, she was getting stuff out of the passenger side when two youths came up on her, held her up, and stole her car. The car was recovered within a few hours, but she’s still messed up about it. She has had a hard time leaving the house, especially after dark.

Your zip code won’t protect you. You have to be aware of your surroundings and be able to do something about it if there is a problem. She got lucky and they wanted the car more than they wanted to shoot her. One was only 17 yo. The other, with the gun, had 3 prior arrests for aggravated assault and was still on the street. And he’s back out again, looking for his next victim. There are lots of guys like him out there.

As the world situation deteriorates, personal security will be more and more of an issue. Take steps now. Build good habits now.

————-
Today I’ve got my non-prepping hobby meeting. We’ll be planning the Christmas party and having our quarterly swapmeet/sale. Afterwards, I will probably head to the BOL. Wife and daughters went up last night with the dog, very late. I’ve got a truck load of stuff to get up there, and I’m sure there are a million things for me to do.

There are 1M things here as well. I guess we’ll see how I feel about the driving before I decide.

There is always something.

And always stacking.

Fri. Nov. 7, 2025 – ti-i-i-ime keeps on slippin’, into the future…

By on November 7th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Mildly chilly. Warming later. Fabulous afternoons… although we did have some clouds yesterday afternoon, it was clear and sunny most of the time. And very moderate, high 80sF to low 90sF in the sun. And here I was told it would just get colder until the weekend.

Did some stuff around the house in the morning, mainly office stuff like invoicing my client. That took some cross-referencing with mileage logs, card receipts, and my written notes. I am always slow invoicing him, and it’s not really fair because the result is a big check once a year rather than more manageable checks throughout. I just don’t like invoicing.

Then I did a really big loop to do pickups. Lots of traffic, and my desire to chat slowed me down. I skipped the cheapest one, that I can probably get next week anyway, without a special trip across town. There was an accident and the little freeway to get to that part of town was completely blocked (going into rush hour) and backed up for miles onto the other freeway. With the delays I might have missed it anyway.

Today I’ll do stuff around the house. I might do one pickup and meet with another auctioneer, or I might just work here. Depends on if I can get some momentum going. There is always more to do.

And sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know until you really try. So get started. Stack.

Thur. Nov. 6, 2025 – …shake ya rump…

By on November 6th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

cool, calm, and collected… nah, Cool, damp, and getting warmer later. It may be predictable, but it does make for some fine afternoons. We had another great weather day yesterday.

I did pickups, auction stuff, and even ran a load of stuff to my shop yesterday. I’m not selling or making money, which is unfortunate, but I’m also buying a whole lot less. And I keep stacking the stuff to sell, I just haven’t had the time, motivation, and stuff all in the same place.

There is a big pile of stuff for the BOL too. Wife and kids will head up this weekend, and I’ll join them later. I’ve got my hobby meeting, and we’re doing our quarterly swap, as well as planning the Christmas party. I usually volunteer to bring stuff to the party, and buy some things to dress the room, so I should be there to do that part. I can’t really believe it’s time to plan for Christmas.

Time just keeps marching on.

And the list gets longer. But. I will make some progress this week. In the couple of days I have left. And I’ll work on the stacks too.

Always be working.
