Sun. Jan. 15, 2023 – ok, this time for realz…

Cold and damp again, although possibly just “cool” and not “cold.”   It did warm up a bit during the day, and I ended up in long pants and a T shirt to get the lights down.   It was 52F when I went to bed.

I spent Saturday morning at my non-prepping hobby meeting.   Lots of good conversations in one of the best (largest) groups we’ve had in a while.  Next month is our quarterly ‘swap meet’ meeting.  I’ll have some stuff to sell by then, and the stuff I didn’t sell last time.

After my meeting I was supposed to quickly take down the Christmas stuff and head to the BOL.   Of course that didn’t happen because reality smacked me around.   I did get the lights down, and the lit up figures put away.   Got some more stuff cleaned up and sorted for the local auction, and did some planning for the coming week with my wife.   Girl Scout cookie season is only a month away.  Our house will be a cookie depot for a while and needs to be cleaned with a place for all the cookies.  That is mostly me getting my stuff out of the way…

The upshot was delaying my run to the BOL to today.   If everything goes to plan, I’ll have a good night sleep, early start, and head out.  My plan is to tackle some more plumbing and convert either the hall bath, or the laundry to pex.  I should have most of what I need to do either, but the laundry is the least critical if I don’t get it finished.  It’s also got some of the most corroded looking pipes.   I’m going to just play it by ear.  Maybe I’ll do work on the deck or yard.  Hard to tell, but I should at least open the walls and make sure I have what I need.  Which reminds me, I’m out of straight join pex connectors.  Gotta get some on my way up…  It’s always something.

The one critical thing is to deliver the freezer to my neighbor up there.   Weaving my way into the community is a priority.  Meatspace baby.

Also, figuring out what I need to keep the septic system running grid down.   That’s a priority too.  Batteries, solar, and inverters should do it but which ones, and how, and when and where do I get them….

Stack up the stuff you need.  Infrastructure, money, and friends being three of the things!

Thur. Jan. 12, 2023 – hey there short stuff

Warm and damp today, probably clear, but no guarantees.   It did get to be a beautiful spring day yesterday, in the depth of winter.   Had that warm, moist smell and was sunny.   TOO EARLY!  Don’t want to trick the plants.

Did run some errands and do a pickup yesterday.   Decided to pick up my new freezers at the last minute on Friday.   Then I do my non-prepping hobby on Saturday, and head to the BOL afterwards.   We’re supposed to be clear until then, but I’ll put a tarp on the load overnight anyway.   Picked up around the house and did some other home stuff.  Christmas tree is stripped and all the indoor decorations are put away.

Today I’ve got stuff to pick up.  Clothes for D1.  Stuff for the BOL.   Parts for metro shelves for my storage unit.   Funny, but the cheapest place to get them was a couple of miles from my house.  Cheaper than amazon, and much cheaper than ebay.   And they had them for same day in store pickup.   Of course, they only had two shelves worth, but that’s all I needed anyway right now.

Had some more spoiled milk in an unopened container.   Should have still been good for a couple of more days, but was chunky.  There is definitely something going on with milk longevity.

Ordered chinese delivery for dinner and the owner thanked me for being a good and loyal customer.  I told her we decided that if we ever wanted to have local restaurants available, we needed to patronize them now (throughout the pandemic).   It’s good food, but not cheap.   I can buy a lot of on sale meat for what we spent, but we will get another couple of servings out of the leftovers, and we consider it an investment in our community.   That’s also one of the reasons we don’t use an online or mail order pharmacy.  We want one in our community.  We want it to be profitable and successful, and employ our neighbors.

It’s meatspace.   I can ask her how business is, if she’s having supply issues, or other problems.  I can get intel locally that I can use.  You might be surprised what you can learn from just talking to people, especially if they have a bit of time, and you are not a stranger.  I’ve talked about it before, but you really need to get out and about in your community.   You need to talk to store owners, neighbors, craftsmen, service providers, and other random people.  Start building relationships, even if it’s just on the level of being the guy who always says ‘hi’ and asks about something.   Tip well.   Be friendly.  Buy from them.  Don’t rant.  Control your urge to talk, listen more…   Because meatspace counts and it will count for a whole lot more if things get worse.

Stack up some relationships.  And stuff.

Wed. Jan. 11, 2023 – can’t think of a single funny thing to say…

Cool, but not too cool.  Damp.  Maybe still clear later, but also maybe some ‘early morning low clouds’ as they put it in Cali when I lived there.  In any case, I’ll be out in it until the bus gets here.  It did get to be very nice yesterday.   We had a bit of rumble and overcast around dusk, but no actual rain.

I spent the afternoon at one of my storage units, the biggest, organizing, sorting, and assembling more shelves.   I really need to get at least one of the other units into this one, and get more stuff out of the house.    I should have about 6-8 bins of stuff going to my auctioneer this week, if he’s in.  Getting some of the stuff out of storage and up to the BOL will help too.

Since I took advantage of the nice weather to work at the storage unit, I didn’t get the Christmas decorations down.   They were a bit damper than I’d have liked after the fog, so maybe if it’s not so wet I can take an hour and get them put away.   The fact is I’m not being as productive as I’d like.   I’ve got to work on that.  Cold and damp weather provides an excuse with all the aches and pains it brings, but that isn’t all of the issue.  I’m tired and looking for excuses.

Identifying the problem is the first step to fixing it, right?   So I better get to it.

Stack some stuff.  Don’t put off to tomorrow what should be done today.  Tomorrow has its own work waiting.

Tues. Jan. 10, 2023 – All the news that’s fit to print.

Cool and damp.   That time of year.  Winter, I think you call it up north.  60F when I went to bed so ‘cool’ not ‘cold.’  It turned into a very nice day yesterday and I’m hoping for the same today.

Got my trailer rental returned.   They had the wrong trailer assigned to me, and that one got returned on time, which left me with a completed reservation, and nothing to turn in.    They got it straightened out.  Didn’t take long.

Hit  the Goodwill on my way home and witnessed a full on scrum over some comic books.   They ended up wrinkling and ripping them as they fought to grab as many as they could.   Savages.   What value there might have been was lost in the fighting.   The one I spot checked was only 99c plus shipping, and after witnessing the fight, the cashiers were not inclined to discounts, so the comics would have been 3/99c.   Not much profit at that rate.   There might have been some valuable books in there, but I didn’t join in.    I did swoop in afterward and pick up a board game that is selling for $65 – 75 and a SCSI adapter in the box that should sell for about the same, maybe a bit less.   I’ll let them fight over pennies.

Came home and did some ‘domestic bliss’ stuff around the house.   More of that today and maybe some plumbing…  or head to my storage unit to take advantage of the clear weather.

Sold one of the freezers to my fisherman buddy.    That leaves the two with more damage to be sold.  Maybe I’ll pick those up today.  Or maybe I’ll do vehicle maintenance.   Or not.   We’ll see.  I’ve got to do a Costco run too.  A whole bunch of stuff I buy is on sale this month so it’s time to add to the stacks.

Had a good conversation with D1 about how the media lies, how they have been lying, and how to look at an article and a picture critically.     She also expressed some concern that with all the illegal invaders, maybe white people (us in particular) would get forced out, or made into the slaves this time around.   I told her that even if we had to die surrounded by piles of spent brass we’d never be slaves.  And to watch for them seizing the guns, because they take the guns when they want to do something to you that you would shoot them for trying…

Conversations are getting interesting.

Stack it high, sporty times will be very difficult to avoid.

Wed. Jan. 4, 2023 – grumble grumble, not feeling great

Supposed to be clear and moderate today and tomorrow… it did clear up yesterday.   Temps were in the 80s according to the weather station, and I believe it.

Did a couple of pickups in the afternoon.   Felt punky all day.   Caught a nap before going out.   I usually try to push through, but didn’t want to drive feeling that out of sorts.  My guts were already churning from WAY too much sugar on Monday.  All told an unpleasant morning, and only marginally better afternoon.  Other than the GI distress, it feels like a cold coming on.  Probably the ‘rona.  Hope not.

Today will likely be more of the same, despite my ever lengthening list.   Just can’t be helped.

Plans.  I’ve got ’em.  And they don’t matter much.

Other than stacking.   That is always appropriate.

Tues. Dec. 3, 2023 – kids back in school today, grumpy grumpy kids…

Warm and damp again.  It stopped raining after a bit yesterday, but stayed wet all day.  No Christmas lights were taken down.  Today should clear, if the national forecast is correct.

I spent the day doing computer stuff and wasting time on the internet with my friends.   Last day of vacation, so a bit languid…  I did get my accounting done for my one client.

Not much else of a useful nature got done.   Some days it be that way.

Today though.   Today I need to start cranking on some of the list.  I know I’ve said that more than once, but ‘this time for sure’!

I have to say that it’s been a bit melancholy around here.  I’ve been going through files and especially pictures on my computer, sorting, and cleaning up, and I’ve come across several pics of people who have “preceded me in death” as the obituaries put it.   My dad, some family friends, a great co-worker, and while it is nice to see them and remember them, it’s also a bit sad.  It’s the time of year for it, to be sure.  Add frequent commentor here, Pecancorner, to the list, and it’s triggered a little more reflection and introspection than I’d normally engage in.   I don’t think any of them would want anyone to wallow in it, but we’re not quite rational beings, are we?  I’m not anyway.   So I’m indulging myself in a little bit of down, to go with the up of the season.  The grey weather hasn’t helped.

Keeping busy and making progress will help though.  Cleaning helps.   When stressed, I find myself cleaning.  Cleaning is productive and you can see the result immediately.  If you come to my house and it’s clean, if the service hasn’t been here, tread softly. Just sayin’.

Anyway.    Things to do, people to see.   Stuff to buy, sell, and fix.

Stuff to stack too.

Time to get to it.

Mon. Jan. 2, 2023 – 01022023 – a whole new set of numbers without any significance at all….

Warm-ish and damp with possibility of rain… probably just enough that taking down the outdoor decorations will be contra-indicated.   Or maybe not.   I’m in no hurry to take them down.  I love the lights.

I spent the whole of the year so far doing computer maintenance stuff, and not critical stuff at that.  So much for making inroads on the list.   Having extra kids in the house meant any plumbing work was ill-advised and that is the most pressing issue.  Given the extremely late night the kids had, everyone was content to spend the day mostly vegged out, even the dog.

Today though, I’ll have to get started on actual productive stuff.   School starts back up tomorrow, and some kids who have been staying up late will be very grumpy.  I’ll be harassing them today so they don’t sleep in too long.

I did cancel all my ebay listings that I had any question about where the item was, or if I hadn’t seen it while looking for the missing item.  I’ve got to get some new listings up, and I’ve decided to start with higher value things.   I usually just do whatever is close to hand and easy to list.   I’ve been accumulating stuff that is worth more though and I need to sell it, not stack it.  Time to get D1 to start listing the easy and cheap items like calculators, books, and remote controls.   New year and a new broom and other mixed metaphors, and all that.

So let’s get to it.  We’ve all got stuff to do, and stuff to NOT do.   Ready, GO!

Sun. Jan. 1, 2023 – Happy New Year!

Cool and damp to start the new year.  It stayed pretty nice yesterday, and was 59F near midnight.  Not super cold, and certainly not ‘warm’.

So.   Happy New Year!  I am sincerely grateful to everyone who comes by,whether you just read or comment and participate in the discussion; whether you come by every day or just once in a while.  Thank you to Barbara for her continued support, and to Rick for his.   It’s been an interesting and challenging year, personally, generally, and here at the Daynotes Journal.

I’m not much for navel gazing, but I do think it’s important to reflect on what you’ve done and what’s been done to you.   It’s important to learn lessons from that, change what needs to be changed, do more of what needs doing, and to keep making progress toward your goals.   I think it’s important to have goals, and this time of year is a traditional time to set goals, evaluate progress toward them, and to focus on changes.

This past year, I finally started making progress toward one of my major prepping goals- getting somewhere to GO when it’s time to go.  Call it a BOL, a retreat, a ‘country place’, or a lakehouse… it’s somewhere to go when the time comes.  It’s also a lot of work  and a new dimension to my prepping journey.  It has eaten a lot of my ‘excess’ energy and time, which has resulted in much shorter daily posts that previously.   There should be some good blog fodder coming up though.  I’ve got big ideas and goals.

To wit, I want to look hard at water treatment, starting with storing more at the BOL, and getting set up to treat more.  I want some off grid back up energy generation.  Start with a fueled generator, add solar and possibly wind, and include battery storage.  I want to get some wood burning heating set up.  I’ve got two wood burning stoves, I’d like to get at least one of them installed.  THEN I’ll need lots more stored wood… I want to get my radio shack and antennas set up for backup comms.  I want to make more progress learning about harvesting food from the environment, to include fish and other creatures from the lake, deer and pig hunting and processing, and getting a productive garden set up.  I want to get a workshop set up and a full set of tools up there so I can be productive and make or repair what needs to be made or fixed.

On a more day to day level, I need to continue making progress on the repair and remodel of the BOL and all  the grounds and outbuildings.   I also need to get some of the neglected projects here at home finished.  I need to focus on selling stuff and having my business make money this year to pay for all the other stuff that needs doing. I also need to be involved in my kids’ lives and education.   That might mean a lot of volunteering at school, which takes more time.   My other volunteering for the Constables and HPD needs to be increased too.  I made those contacts and started building relationships, but let it go for too long.   Time to re-engage in that community.   Time to start meeting with my fellow hams again too.

Oh, and a little physical fitness, maybe some martial arts or other self defense classes, particularly with the kids, and more shooting are all “wants” for the new year.   Yep.   Lots to do.  Much of it is just expansion of what I am doing or resumption of what I was doing, but some of it is new, and all of it will be taking place in the context of work and time spent at the BOL.

Nothing like setting some goals 🙂

My outlook for the coming year is the same as it was.   Dumpster fires to continue and worsen.   I expect more economic woes, more political shenanigans as the existing order falls apart.   I am more convinced than ever that we’re already sliding down the slope into what Bob called the long slow economic collapse.   I’m also convinced we’re currently entering one of those times in world history where everything changes.   The world will look very different in a few years.  I can’t even begin to pick a likely scenario, but I’m going to do my best to get through it, and come out the other side.  If bare survival is all I can manage, I’ll take that as a win, but I’m shooting for positioning myself and my family to thrive in whatever comes next.

Part of that positioning is having somewhere to go if we have to leave here.   Part is increasing the stacks NOW while the stuff is available.   IDK what the next ‘toilet paper’ or ‘N95 mask’ will be, but something that is common and cheap now will certainly be in short supply or even unobtainable later this year, and in the coming years.  Part is getting out and networking, meeting and making myself useful to other people.  Who you know is always important, but when things go really pear shaped, who you know and who knows you can make the difference between working or not, getting help or not, being safe or not… Part of it is building skills.   A vague plan to ‘live off the land’ won’t help if you don’t know how to do it, and haven’t the stuff needed to make it possible.  Fishing is turning out to be harder than gardening, and I’ve positively sucked at gardening…

Prepping is a journey.   It’s also fractal in nature, so there is always more to do, learn, or stack.  I’d love it if you all keep hanging around, sharing my journey and taking one of your own.

Here’s to a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year for us all!

Sat. Dec. 31, 2022 – New Year’s Eve

Cool and damp but not raining… if my gut and the forecast can be believed.  If not, well it will be a damp dreary day.   It started to get colder last night, and temps fell until after midnight.

I did get some of my list of things done.  Never did find the ebay item, so I had to cancel the order.  I hate that.   I am going to stop all my listings and only relist the stuff I’ve seen with my own eyes in the new year.   I’ve had too many cancellations. If I make a resolution this year it will be to renew focus on selling.   I can’t just do auctions, as the ‘long tail’ and global reach of ebay make all the difference for some items.   Prices are higher too, commensurate with the increased work and hassle involved.  Much of what I have in storage will really only sell on ebay, so I need to get back to it.

Not sure what today will bring.  I intend to sleep late.  Then I’ll do some things.  Maybe I’ll cook.   We certainly need to figure out what we’re eating for dinner.   We will probably have  a bigger, more elaborate meal tomorrow, even though it’s just us here for the holiday.  It’s nice to mark the beginning of the new year with a bit of ritual.

Rituals, traditions, shared experiences, stories.   These are the ways we pass on our culture.  It’s critical that we do.

Stack up some good times.   And eat some of the things 😉

Fri. Dec. 30, 2022 – the end is nigh! (of the year that is…)

Wet, maybe still raining.   Cool.   Although the national forecast shows clearing weather for the next couple of days, it was raining pretty hard when I went to bed.   We were good all day, until late afternoon, then it came pouring down.   Localized street flooding kind of pouring down…  Stopped for a while but started back up around 11pm.   So it seems likely we’ll still have rain in the morning today.

Did some things yesterday.  The dental appointment in the morning did blow most of the morning, but I didn’t get much done after lunch either.   Fell asleep at the desk from too many carbs at lunch.

Spent some time looking for my ebay sold item and didn’t find it.   There’s one more place to look today if the rain isn’t coming down.  I absolutely HATE not being able to find things that I know I have.  What is the point of having something you can’t put your hands on?   Le sigh.   I’ll either find it or cancel the sale.   I really need to go through all my sale items and organize more than I have.  More things on the list.

I’ve got a couple of pickups to do today, and some other stuff to take care of, if it’s not raining.  If it is, I’ll work the indoor list.   We’ve pretty much decided to stay home for the New Year’s holiday.   Along with the uncertainty of the LP gas situation, I’ve got plenty to do here.   Then next week I’ll pick up the stone veneer and geotextile and take them up to the BOL, and hopefully get the gas situation sorted out.

There is always something more that needs to be done.  And I’ve got less time and energy and desire to do it.  Just keep plugging away at it seems to work.  When I stop, then I’ve got trouble.   So keep plugging away.  And keep stacking the basics.

nick
