Thur. Jan. 29, 2026 – yada yada yada…

Cold again. Or still. But it did get into at least the mid 50sF yesterday. I took my jacket off but kept my long sleeve shirt on for a while in the afternoon. It would be nice if today got even a little bit warmer, as long as it stays clear. Soon I’ll be wishing I had more cold days to work in the attic…

I spent the morning at the doctor’s office. Details are in yesterday’s comments, but the short story is- more testing. At least with testing we aren’t guessing. Much. Spent the afternoon doing auction stuff. Pickup, sorting, etc. Found a couple of things I didn’t realize I’d moved. Good thing I was too lazy busy to need them during that time.

Dinner was a pork loin roast frozen in 2022. It was tasty, but like most modern pork, too lean. I was careful to get it just barely cooked enough, but it was still a bit dry without the pan juices.

Oh, I captured a mouse in the kitchen too. Saw the little bastage on the counter, trapped him, and got him in a box. Took him outside to meet Mr. Shovel, but he escaped. So I set an electronic trap. I’ve got to do a deep clean now and I still haven’t figured out how he’s getting up to the counter or where he goes. I don’t want vermin in the attic or on the patio or in the garage, but I can’t abide them in the actual house with us. Time to refill all the bait boxes too.

There is always a new thing that needs doing. And I’m the man to do it.

Stack all the things.

Wed. Jan. 28, 2026 – Cold. So cold.

By on January 28th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Stupid school district. It was colder yesterday than the days they canceled school, with actual frost on the ground. But hey, gotta get the butts back in the seats and get paid. Started around 25F and got warmer, all the way into the low 40sF, but then crashed back down. Sunny and clear though. More of the same today.

I didn’t do anything but sleep in the morning. I went back to bed and tried to get 4 more hours. When I got up, I felt ok. 4-6 hours a night is more typical for me, which is probably why I crash out on the weekends when I can. Did my pickup in the afternoon, and will not buy from them again unless the deal is outrageous, because they aren’t nearby or easy to get to. Nor are they near other auctioneers so I can just make a loop or several stops.

I did stop in at the Goodwill Surplus store. It’s a new store and I’ve never been to it. It’s also not close to my house. It’s big, and wasn’t as nasty as they usually are. Still lots of hispanics digging through the bins for clothes and monopolizing carts for the whole day. The store is enforcing the ‘no unattended carts’ rule so they have to have someone stand with the cart. IDK why they just don’t take the cart and cash out when it gets full. They can come back in and fill it again.

I did grab a vintage Peavey guitar amp…

Then it was home to make dinner (canned red beans and rice with added sausage). It’s hearty, and can be eaten cold if needed. It’s my wife’s goto backup girl scout camping meal. I like disaster food that already has the water in it, is cooked, and won’t take a lot of time to prepare. Bulk rice and bulk beans are ok, and I have some, but canned and ready to eat wins for most disasters. Fuel, time, and water are all usually in short supply in a disaster. Canned food cuts the cost of those things dramatically.

Today I have a follow up doctor visit in the morning, and a local pickup in the afternoon. During the rest of the day I’ll work the list.

One fun thing, the dog presented me with a dead mouse yesterday. And he’s going nuts in the kitchen trying to get under the cabinets… so that’s something I’ll need to address. Ah, good times.

Stack some vermin control. You’ll need it.

Tues. Jan. 27, 2026 – school days, school days…

Cold again, but less so. Fern moves on. Nothing really for us. If you were affected, please share any lessons learned either positive or negative. Presumably we’ll all get back to normal winter now.

Did mostly computer stuff yesterday, after a very leisurely start to the day. Did some fiction reading in between too. Snow days = slack off days for me this time around. Now I need to get everything back to its normal state, and maybe do more permanent and appropriate fixes instead of kludges…

I have one pickup today. I didn’t even really try to buy much in the last week’s auctions. Time to do a bit more ‘shopping in my closet’ and assimilating some of the existing stacks. Plus, there is a big list that needs attention and driving around to do pickups was eating a lot of time.

Kids are back in school today and their extra stuff kicks back in too. Still chilly though.

Lists. I got ’em. Plans. I got ’em. Stacks. I got ’em. And I always seem to get more…

Mon. Jan. 26, 2026 – 01262026 – still cold and snowy…

By on January 26th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

It snowed at the BOL yesterday! Enough to lightly cover the ground and cars. Wow. In Houston it was right around freezing until after dark when it got down to the mid-20sF. Today will probably stay below freezing in Houston, and maybe at the BOL too. For us, it’s definitely not the Snowpocalypse.

I do sincerely hope that it continues to not be a disaster for most people.

—————————————————————————————–

Spent yesterday sitting at my computer. I ended up in hard core work avoidance mode and decided to do a bit of a refresh here. So I spent WAY too long messing with colors to get rid of most of the cyan and vaguely green edge to the blues. I kept the green accents, but might still change them if I find something I like better. Let me know what you think.

There are other things that are suddenly driving me nuts but I think I’ll ignore them. The biggest is the way no two elements line up vertically. Zoom in to a one column view and you’ll see what I mean. Content is more important than looks. And I’ve got a big list of other things to do.

——————————————————————————————-

Today I’ll keep monitoring conditions at the BOL, but as long as there is power, it should be fine. I’m really glad I spent the time and money to put all the pex lines inside insulation. I also built a closet around the water heater and all the plumbing in the garage, so it should be warmer in there than the garage proper. I’m a bit concerned about the irrigation system, and the pump, but I did what I could to drain it a couple of months ago. The whole mess needs to be redone, but that is not at the top of my list.

I think I’ll bid a little harder the next time some pipe warming tape comes up in an auction. I can think of a few places it would be handy.

———————————————————————————————

If I get off my butt, I’ll do some more cleaning and sorting here, or at the shop, or I’ll work on networking stuff here. I’ve got the ubiquiti cloud key to install and configure, and a couple of ubiquiti WAPs that should give me better control over DNS and ad blocking than the ATT router and wifi. I might even get a pi-hole set up. If I can find my razberry pi…

———————————————————————————————

Stacks. Skills. Like minded friends. You need them all….

Sun. Jan. 25, 2026 – so are we all still here??

Cold. Wet. We’ll see about the rest. Yesterday was dreary in Houston but not apocalyptic. Of course my experience isn’t universal. I’m sure winter is giving it to some people good and hard. Like it used to. Guess we’re moving out of the warm period…

Saturday was filled with calm and fairly low key prepping for the storm’s arrival. Check the generators. Check the heat. Bring some stuff to the front of the stacks. Secure the outdoor stuff as needed for a storm. Normal stuff.

We are being manipulated. Pushed. Pulled. Whiplashed. Led. Directed. I’m tired of it. The right memes about NPCs having their ‘outrage of the day’ chip swapped out, but we are subject to it too.

Disengage. Step back. Look for the context, the hidden hand, the manipulation. Leave the emotion behind. Observe, decide, act, but don’t be led to leap off the cliff.

—————

Today we’ll see if the hype was hype or justified and reasonable. My bet is on “No”.

Stack. Prepare. Then there is no need for panic or upset, and you have choices. Choices are good. Panic is not.

Sat. Jan. 24, 2026 – the big freeze is coming!

But it’s off to a slow start. Cool and moist to start anyway, but supposed to drop rapidly at some point. It was about 62F most of yesterday, and dripping wet. Gross. Had to run the defroster in the Ranger to see once the sun went down. It’ll probably be like that until the cold front gets here.

Spent the morning doing domestic bliss, then headed to my pickups. That took a couple hours out of my afternoon. I did stop and get 15 gallons of diesel fuel to run in my diesel heater, if needed. It’ll stay good for a long time if not used. I went by my LP Gas guy, but he had 20+ people in line. I’ll try him today if I feel motivated. I’ve got 4 full bottles here.

I then spent a couple hours at the shop moving stuff, throwing stuff out, and setting up shelves. I also got some sorting done. Then home for takeout with the Wife. Both Daughters had stuff to do. I’m the least social by a large margin.

Today I’ll do a couple more things to get ready for winter. Maybe I will pull a chuck roast out for the crockpot. That’s always good on a blustery day.

I will say, I have a hard time getting excited about a cold front. It’s not going to last 2 weeks, only a couple of days. Hurricanes are a bigger threat, and even strong winds like the ‘derecho’ we got last year are more likely to create lasting issues.

I guess I’ve got a bit of disaster fatigue. And maybe the disasters are not so impressive anymore.

That’s kinda the idea behind prepping though, and living a prepping lifestyle. You shouldn’t have to do much, other than shifting some stores around, to be ready for most things. Especially something like cold in winter.

Given all the hype and the constant need to give your attention to some hugely important thing, which changes daily, you might think we were being manipulated, and constantly kept off balance. But that would just be a conspiracy theory, right??

Stack. Then calmly live your life.

Fri. Jan. 23, 2026 – Friday again. Huh.

By on January 23rd, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Maybe we’ll start to see some cold coming in… or maybe not. They pushed our forecast back a bit. School district cancelled sports and extracurricular events this weekend, so there won’t be any busloads of students trying to move around on Saturday night. It’s still reasonably warm during the day though. It was grey and misty all day yesterday, and I think today will probably be similar.

I did some stuff around the house in the morning, including working on finding a new meeting place for my non-prepping hobby. Community rooms are kinda pricey and most won’t book recurring events. I might have found something though.

In the afternoon I did a pickup, then took a load from the house to the shop. I really need to spend some time there, and get stuff sorted. With uncertainty over any rain it’s hard to move stuff in my pickup truck. Even yesterday with only threatening skies and heavy mist, stuff was wet by the time I got to the shop.

Today I’ll continue working the list. I’ve got a couple of pickups and I need to go by my secondary. I’ll pick up the natgas heater I have there and bring it home just in case things do get chilly this weekend.

Preps, I’ve got ’em. Stacks too.

Build some resilience and some choices. Stack.

Thur. Jan. 22, 2026 – don’t be a burden

By on January 22nd, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Cool and very damp. Then at some point it will get cold. Cold I say. Freezing cold. Or maybe it won’t. We’ll see when we get there. Everyone here should be just fine with some extreme weather, and even some outages.

Didn’t get anything on my list done. Yep, good intentions, poor follow through. I spent some time in the rabbit hole of Social Security payouts. I spent some time on auction stuff. Spent the rest of the daylight hours getting my natgas gennie hooked up to the house. Not in any real or permanent way, but it’s safe and ok for now. Still a manual switchover if needed, but less messing around with the gasoline powered 26 year old Generac that I normally use if I have to feed the house.

Today, I’ve got some pickups to do. Well, one for sure, maybe two. Anything else will depend on the weather. If it’s not raining, I can get stuff moved around. If there’s moisture from the sky, I’ll find other things to do. Right. Sure I will.

Hard to be motivated even in the face of pretty certain need. I do have an issue with self sabotage and needing external deadlines to motivate me. It’s something to be aware of and to work on…

Easier to stack.

Get busy!

Wed. Jan. 21, 2026 – my bologna has a first name…

By on January 21st, 2026 in culture, decline and fall

Cool, trending toward cold. Maybe even really cold in the next couple of days, but I’m not holding my breath. It was cool and overcast all day yesterday, but still better than winter. And it was 59F when I went to bed, which is warmer than the night before. It’s been all over the place for the past week, so who really knows what’s coming?

I spent the morning doing auction stuff, then the afternoon on a service call for my client. A reboot did the trick. The NVR seemed to be running fine when I got there, but I couldn’t connect remotely, nor could he, so something was wrong. Uptime was about a year, but it’s possible a brown out caused something to get out of whack. Sometimes pulling the tail is really the best solution.

Maybe that is a life lesson too.

Today I’ve got to work the list. If it’s not raining (about 80/20 for rain) I will get a load out of the house and possibly even a load from storage. Otherwise, I’ll be looking for inside stuff to do. There isn’t a shortage of inside stuff…

Do what you can, where you are, with what you have. And stack. That will increase what you have. Learn, that will increase what you know how to do. Practice, that will tie the two together.

Tues. Jan. 20, 2026 – to absent friends…

By on January 20th, 2026 in friends, personal

Today is the anniversary of Robert Bruce Thompson’s death. Is it even possible that it was 8 years ago? So much has changed in our world, and here, yet so much still remains. Being prepared is better than not. We can get through disasters, and life will go on. There is an ‘after’. What you do ‘before’ makes a great deal of difference in what ‘after’ looks like. Community makes everything better.

Raise a glass for our absent friends- gone, but not forgotten. Still present, like the ripples in the pond. They live on through the changes they made in us, the people around them.
